“Yes,I’ll be ready at nine in the morning. Goodbye, dear, and thanks again.” It had not been an easy telephone call for Mrs Robson to make. Her daughter had been very kind,of course, and had immediately agreed to pick her up and drive her to the station, but Mrs Robson hated to say that she needed help. Since her husband died ten years ago,she had been proud of herself on her independence. She had continued to live in their little house, alone.
That evening, however, she was standing at her living room window, staring out at the SOLD notice in the small front garden. Her feelings were mixed. Of course, she was sad at the thought of leaving the house,as it was full of so many memories. But at the same time she was looking forward to spending her last years near the sea, back in the little seaside town where she had been born and grew up. With the money from the sale of the house, she had bought a little flat there. She turned from the living room window, and looked round at the room. There was a small fish tank, with two goldfish in it. When asked why,her husband used to say,“It’s nice to have something alive in the room.” Sinc e he had passed away, she had always kept some goldfish, and always had “something alive in the room”.The next morning,as her train was pulling out of the station,Mrs Robson called to her daughter,“Kate, you won’t forget to collect the goldfish, will you?The children will love them. If volunteering begins at an early age,it can become part of a child’s life—something he or she may just expect and want to do. It can teach them:
A sense of responsibility. By volunteering, children and teens learn how to be on time for a job,do their best, and be proud of the results. And they also learn that,in the end,we are responsible for the wellbeing of our whole community.
The knowledge that one person can make a difference. A wonderful message for a child is that he or she is important enough to have an effort on someone or something else.
The benefit of sacrifice(奉献的好处).By giving up a toy to a less fortunate child,a child learns that it is good to sacrifice sometimes. Cutting back on playing time to help clean up a street tells kids that there are important things other than ourselves and our needs.
Tolerance(容忍).Working in community service can bring kids and teens in touch with people of different backgrounds, abilities, ages, and education. They will likely find that even the most diverse people can be united by common values.
Job skills. Community service can help young people decide on their future careers. Learning to work as a team member, taking on leadership roles, setting project goals—these are all skills that can be learned by volunteering and will serve a child well in any future career.
How to fill free time wisely. If a child is not interested in traditional afterschool activities, community service can be a wonderful choice.
28.You help a student who can’t go to school because of money. That is about .
A.a sense of responsibility B.job skills C.tolerance D.the benefit of sacrifice
29.If you have to get on with all kinds of classmates—hardworking or lazy, workaholic or playfirst, polite or rude, etc.,what you need most is .

My parents divorced when I was 5,making my mother a single parent. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life,“Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen,I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day,my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said,I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later,I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression(大萧条) occurred,my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the
family. At that moment,I was determined never to be poor again.
My real change occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951.I was angry that the secondclass hotel charged an extra 2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I decided to open a motel(汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mother was one of my strongest supporters. We experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul,I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later,we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.
32.When Kemmons was a little child, what his mother usually told him was .
A.funny B.touching
C.fighting D.encouraging
33.Form the author’s view, who played the most important part in making him walk back to school again? A.Mother. B.Teachers. C.Friends. D.Relatives.
34.According to the passage, what made Kemmons start a motel by himself?
A.His previous business success of various levels.
B.His terrible experience in the hotel.
C.His mom’s support.
D.His wife’s suggestion.
35.In your opinion, which of the following b est describes Kemmons’ mother?

C.Loving, supportive and strong willed. D.Strict, sensitive and supportive.

Four Benefits of Writing by Hand
Today is National Handwriting Day! Although we don’t write like we used to,here are four ways handwriting is still helpful.
It’s better for learning.
36 That’s because putting ink to paper stimulates(刺激) the brain. One study from 2010 found that the brain areas related to learning “lit up” much more when kids were asked to write words like “spaceship” by hand versus just studying the word closely.
37
Many famous authors prefer writing by hand to the use of a typewriter or computer. Writer Susan Sontag once said that she penned her first drafts(草稿) before typing them up for editing later. She said,
“ 38 ” A 2009 study seems to support Sontag’s preference for writing by hand:Elementary school students who wrote essays with a pen not only wrote more than their key board tapping friends, but they also wrote faster and in more complete sentences.
It will prevent you from being distracted(分心).
The computer in front of you is really a distraction. 39 In 2012,scientists even suggested that taking fiveminute breaks to browse Tumblr or BuzzFeed could make you a more productive worker. However, when it’s time to work on that essay, have only a pen and paper in front of you.
It keeps your brain sharp as you get older.
40 According to The Wall Street Journal, some physicians say that the act of writing is good exercise for those who want to keep their minds sharp as they age.
A.It makes you a better writer.
B.Writing is good for your brain.
C.Of course,the Int ernet isn’t all bad.
D.I like the slowness of writing by hand.
E.Try writing by hand at least 20 minutes each day.

G.One of the most effective ways to study is to rewrite your notes by hand.
