Passage4
When we can see well, we don’t think about our eyes very often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.
People who are nearsighted can only se e things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.
People who are farsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy
because of cataracts(白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
When night falls, colures become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the sides of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you can see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can’t see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye
after dark.
51. We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ___.
A. we think about our eyes
B. we cannot see clearly
C. we wear glasses
D. we have to do much reading
52. According to the passage, a _________ is more likely to be nearsighted than the average person.
A. tailor
B. doctor
C. guard
D. driver
53. Those who suffer from cataracts _________.
A. will become blind
B. can’t be cured
C. may be cured
D. must move to other places
54. People who are farsighted _________.
A. cannot do a lot of close work without glasses
B. can only see things that are very close to their eyes
C. have difficulty reading a book if they hold it at arm’s length
D. have the same problem as the nearsighted people
55. To see a small thing at night, it is better to look _________.

Sadness and happiness are often talked about by people in their spare time. Most people want themselves to be happy forever, but few people know how to find happiness. Others say if we own lots of money and success, we will be happy. However, money
and success do not bring lasting happiness.
A famous Greek thinker, Aristotle said, “Happiness depends on ourselves.” That’s to say, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help us be happier.(73)The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. We spend so much time t hinking about the future, such as getting into college or getting a good job, and we fail to enjoy the present. We should enjoy life’s simple pleasure, such as reading a good book, listening to our favorite music, or spending time with close friends. (74)People who have several close friends often live a happier and healthier life.
Another secret to live a happy life is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports.People can forget their problems and only think about the activities. (75)Finally, many people find happiness from helping others . Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If we want to feel happier, do more good things for someone. We can help a friend with his or her studies, goshopping or help out with some things for elderly persons.
If we do above, we will be happy.

Our views towards life change over the time. When I was around five years old, I was in a car accident. At that time, I did not realize the seriousness of it and how lucky I was to still be alive. As I look back to think what happened on that night, I now realize how lucky my family members and I were to not have gotten serious injuries. The day of the accident started out great. My brother, Troy, and I had
spent the night before at JoAnn’s house, with Heather, and JoAnn’s husband Gary. The next day we spent playing inside the house, because it was cold, windy and rainy outside. At night, JoAnn told us we were going out and that where we were going was a surprise. The five of us climbed into an old car, and we set off for our surprise. It was still cold, windy, and raining cats and dogs outside when we left. Troy, Heather and I sat in the backseat together happily. The next thing I knew was that everything was chaos(混乱)! The road was so slick(滑的) that the car lost control. Glass was flying everywhere, and it sounded like there was noise all around us. Then i t was totally quiet, except for the sound of the rain and wind. Troy, Heather and I were all lying on top of one another. The three of us were crying, not knowing what had happened. JoAnn and Gary were trying to calm(使平静) us down and kept asking us if we were all right. Luckily, none of us was injured, just a few cuts. After that I only remember sitting there in the cold, dark night waiting for Gary to get back with people to help us. We never got to the surprise that night. But at least we were able to go home in one piece.
After my brother and I got home that night, I remember my parents let us stay up as long as we wanted to. I guess my parents were realizing just how close they came to losing us that night. As I think of the tragedy(悲剧) that could have happened on that night, I realize how precious(宝贵) life is. I treasure my family and friends, and hope that we will share a loving, caring, and rewarding lifetime together. Things seldom go the way I plan them to, but I take a deep breath, try to laugh, and make the best of it.
86. Did the accident happen at night?
87. What was the weather like when the accident happened?
88. How did the accident happen?
89. What was the writer doing when Gary asked for help?
90. What is the passage mainly about?

Smog is a big problem in many Chinese cities. Chai Jing, a former news hostess with CCTV, discussed it in her documentary Under the Dome (穹顶之下).
The 103-minute film was published on websites on Feb 28, 2015. In the film, Chai visits polluted places and talks to officials and scientists. She concludes that burning too much coal and oil is the main cause of PM2.5 and smog.
To make things worse, according to Chai, the coal and oil we are burning is of poor qualit y and don’t meet the standards for environmental protection. Therefore they have produced more harmful gas and particles (颗粒) to pollute the air.
To solve the problem, Chai suggests that factories should clean our coal and
oil, or replace them with cleaner energy.
In her film, Chai also thought that ordinary people can do something to help control smog too. For example, we can live a greener life by using more public transportation. Or if we see something that could harm the environment, we can try to stop it.
What can we do to help beat the smog?
Take public transportation.
Call the hotline 12369 for complaints about environmental problems.
Clean the cooking area regularly to avoid extra harmful gas.
Take a picture of any pollutant source and post it on your social media accounts.
Remember to add “@local environmental departments” on weibo.
Don’t buy products made from facto ries that pollute the environment.
Chen Jining, the new minister of environmental protection, praised Chai. He said, “This film encourages us to care more about the environment. This is what we need

Learn to Smile
I remember a song by Westl ife, the first sentence of it is "Just a smile and the rain is gone." Do you like smiling? I think you should learn to smile .
First, learn to smile at yourself when something unpleasant happens in your life. If you fail an exam or you are misunderstood by your friends, don't be sad. Just smile at yourself . Smiling at yourself brings back your confidence . Sometimes the one who beats you is not others, but yourself. And smile can also keep you healthy.
Second, learn to smile at others. It will make you communicate better with people. Smiling at others makes yourself happy as well.
In a word, smile is a kind of language belonging to everyone. It passes love and friendship and helps shorten the distance between you and other people. Living with a smile, every day will be shiny.。
