I knew I was all right now. Nobody else would come a-hunting after me. I got my traps out of the canoe and made me a nice camp in the thick woods. I made a tent out of my blankets to put my things under so the rain couldn't get at them. I caught a catfish and towards sundown I started my camp fire and had supper.
When it was dark I sat by my camp fire, feeling pretty satisfied; but by and by it got sort of lonesome, so I went and sat on the bank and listened to the current crashing along, and counted the stars and drift logs and rafts that came down, and then went to bed; there was no better way to put in time when you are lonesome; you can't stay so, and you soon get it over.
And so for three days and nights. No difference—just the same thing. But the next day I went exploring around the island. I was boss of it; it all belonged to me, and I wanted to know all about it; but mainly I wanted to spend the time. I found plenty of strawberries and green summer grapes; and the green blackberries were just beginning to show.
Well, I went fooling along in the deep woods till I judged I wasn't far from the foot of the island. I had my gun along, but I had shot nothing; it was for protection. About this time I almost stepped on a good-sized snake, and it moved quietly and smoothly through the grass and flowers, and I was after it, trying to get a shot at it. I clipped(疾驰) along, and all of a sudden I bounded(跳) right on to the ashes of a camp fire that was still smoking.
My heart jumped up among my lungs. I never waited to look further, but uncocked my gun and went sneaking back on my tiptoes as fast as I could. Every
now and then I stopped a second among the thick leaves and listened, but my breath came so hard that I couldn't hear anything else. I moved quietly along another piece further, then listened again; and so on, and so on. If I saw a stump(树桩), I took it for a man; if I stepped on a stick and broke it, it made me feel that a person had cut one of my breaths in two and I only got half, and the short half, too.
There was no time to be fooling around. When getting to the camp, I got all my traps into my canoe again to have them out of sight. I put out the fire and threw the ashes around to look like an old last year's camp, and then climbed a tree.
I suppose I was up for two hours; but I didn’t see or hear anything—I only thought I h eard and saw as much as a thousand things. Well, I couldn’t stay up there forever, so at last I got down, but I kept in the thick woods and on the lookout all the time. All I could get to eat was berries and what was left over from breakfast.

Gateway Academy Pre-sessional Courses
Our presessional courses are perfect for students who have a conditional place at a British university, but who need to achieve a certain level of English in order to be accepted. The course aims to provide students with the English language and study skills that they need in order to be successful at university or another academic establishment. It is important to note that completion of the course does not guarantee students' entrance into a university. It is necessary for students to show during the course that they have understood the information and skills that they have been taught, and can apply them to their work.
Presessional students at Gateway Academy will benefit from:
●Small class sizes (no more than 10 students per class)
●Twenty three hours of tuition(上课) per week
●Individual support and tutorials
●Regular guest lecturers
●The use of the Academy's study and recreational facilities, including the Language Library, the computer suite, and the academy's sports facilities(设施).
● A varied social programme including evening entertainments and weekend excursions(远足) to popular tourist attractions and cities such as Stonehenge, Oxford and StratfordonAvon.
The course offers an allaround approach to learning, and covers reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. During the course, students will receive instruction on important techniques such as summarywriting, analysing essay titles, organising writing, note-taking in lectures, giving seminars(讨论) and making presentations. Students will gain experience in working both individually and in groups. As part of the course, all students will work towards a 5000-word project in their own field of study. Students will receive guidance from their tutors on how best to conduct research and write it up effectively. Students will also work towards a presentation on the same subject.
There is no final examination. The attendance, successful completion of assignments and participation in class will be taken into account. Students will be given a full report on their progress at the end of the course. Students need to be aware that the course involves a great deal of coursework, which will require students to manage their time effectively.

Do American children still learn handwriting in school? In the age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out. 90% of teachers say they are required to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. One study published this year found that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. Some teachers are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for ten to fifteen minutes a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for sixty to seventy minutes a day—which really for handwriting is pretty much death.
Many adults remember learning that way—by copying letters over and over again. Today's thinking is that short periods of practice are better. Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught by itself. Instead, they say it should be used as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.
Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility, which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency—writing without having to think about it. Fluency continues to develop up until high school.
But not everyone masters these skills. Teachers commonly report that about one fourth of their kids have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important any more because of computers and voice recognition programs.
But Steve Graham at Vanderbilt says word processing is rarely done in elementary school, especially in the early years. American children traditionally first learn to print, and then to write in cursive(连笔,草书), which connects the letters. But guess what we learned from a spokeswoman for the College Board, which administers the SAT college admission test. More than 75% of students choose to print their essay on the test rather than write in cursive.
68. We can infer from the first paragraph that ________.
A. teachers spend little time in teaching handwriting
B. most teachers are at a loss how to teach handwriting
C. handwriting teaching is not commonly required
D. most teachers attach importance to teaching handwriting
69. Which of the following about traditional handwriting in the USA is NOT true?
A. The students are taught by practicing a long period.
B. Printing is taught in preference to writing in cursive.
C. Handwriting is taught for its own sake.
D. Two skills get involved in handwriting.
70. Some American people consider handwriting not important any more because ______.
A. all the American children learn to print first
B. about 1/4 of the students choose to print their essay on the test
C. it is unnecessary to use handwriting in the age of keyboard
D. computers and voice recognition programs are widely used
71. ________ may serve as the best title for the passage.
A. Handwriting: fascinating in keyboard age
B. Right or wrong: the death of handwriting
C. Two skills involved in handwriting
D. Handwriting lessons on the way out

Restoring the quakehit ecosystems is a question of balancing the interests of the local people and the environment. Rural methane (沼气) projects can reduce the number of locals taking firewood from the mountainsides. The use of straw as food for animals will ensure that vegetation(草木) can grow. In Sihai township and Dazhuangke village, in Beijing, they now have a forestry coverage of 85% or more, compared to the 30% they had 15 years ago. Back then, land was used very inefficiently: one person would use 20 mu of forest just for firewood. With those pressures on the ecosystem, no amount of spending on reforestation will succeed. Then the government relocated the population and paid those who remained to tend the forest and provide coal. This reduced the pressures on the ecosystem and it was able to recover naturally.
When an ecosystem has not been pushed past certain limits, it is able to recover on its own. Human involvement should only play a minor role, including after an earthquake. This is particularly the case for sandy grasslands, grasslands deserts, the mountains of the south and the northern sides of mountains in the north. In these areas soil remains and the water, light, heat and nutrients needed are available. Less human involvement is even more appropriate in areas with a small population, where it can avoid money being wasted on ineffective efforts, such as creating forests in dry areas.
The creation of nature reserves should be a model to allow damaged ecosystems to recover. Funding can start at the national level; centrally-funded nature reserves can enforce environmental protection laws and help to promote the local economy. This will solve the problems of reserves being run to make money. When national reserves are funded, local governments will be able to adopt the same model and provide the funds for nature reserves from their own budgets. The first project should be established in nature reserves hit by the quake; these can then become models for other areas.
72. To restore the quakehit ecosystem, government should ________.
A. forbid locals from taking firewood from the mountainsides
B. encourage local people to feed their animals just with straw
C. spend large amounts of money relocating the population
D. protect the environment without harming locals' interests
73. The forestry coverage in rural Beijing has increased greatly because ________.
A. pressures on land were reduced
B. a large amount of coal is provided
C. no people live in that area
D. locals take good care of the forest
74. According to the passage ________ play(s) a major role in ecosystem recovery.
A. local people
B. nature itself
C. human involvement
D. government's effort
75. According to the last paragraph, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Nature reserves could be helpful to recover the damaged ecosystems.
B. Centrallyfunded nature reserves are beneficial to local economy.
C. Some nature reserves are created for the purpose of making money.
D. The first projects on nature reserves should be set up in quakehit areas.

Being passionate, honest and hardworking, a good student is always listening and learning. Personally speaking, I strongly believe that honesty is of utmost importance among dozens of good qualities.
There is a proverb saying “Honesty is the best policy”,and it seems true. The most important element in human relationships, whether business or personal relationships, is trust.
Here is one of my secrets. I once lied to my parents because of my poor sores. Having known the real fact from teachers, they praised and encouraged me, showing their deep love. Later days, my conscience swallowed me, growing as I told lie after lie in an effort to conceal my original deceit. I gave it up, and chose to be frank. Wows! It is better to stick to the truth!
From then on, I have kept the following in my minds: If it is not true, don't say it. If it is not right, don't do it. Honesty is not only the best policy, but also a principle, which is absolutely essential for the good and happy living of life.。
