It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech , every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has
planned.Fortunately , such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners , why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say , they hear only what the speaker does say.If you lose your place for a moment , wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences , or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur , don' t worry about them.Just con ti nue as if nothing happe ned.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech , that doesn' t really matter. If you have ever liste ned to Marti n Luther King ' s famous speech—"I have a dream”,you may no tice that he stumbles over his words twice during the speech. Most likely , however, you don' t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your atte nti on on his message rather tha n on his way of speech-making.People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-mak ing as a ki nd of performa nce rather tha n as an act of com muni cati on. They feel the liste ners are like judges in an ice-skat ing competiti on .But , in fact, the liste ners are not look ing for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker' s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually in crease a speaker' s attract iven ess by making him more huma n.
As you work on your speech , don' t worry about being perfect.Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
29. The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will _________ .
A . be smarter than you
B. do better than you

30. You don' t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because _________ .
A . you find the way of speech-making more important
B. you don ' t fully understand the speech
C . you don' t know what the speaker plans to say
D . your atte nti on is on the content
31 . It can be in ferred from the passage that ________
A . one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
B.giving a speech is like giving a performance
C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be 32.What would be the best title for the passage?
A .How to Be a Perfect Speaker
B.How to Make a Perfect Speech
C.Don't Expect Mistakes in a Speech D.Don' t Expect a Perfect Speech
D
Who knows about sleep ?Astronauts. They have to.Their bodies are cut off from the outside world that reminds us what time it is.But actually ,it 's even worse than that.An astronaut reported in his diary that he was likely to make mistakes on days following an unusually late bedtime.
So NASA started doing some serious research. They quickly realized that we are a slave to the outside world.Without light and darkness ,we are unable to regulate(管理) sleep times.
Because of modern technology ,we are all living more like astronauts now.Light is no longer a function of the sun but of always-on indoor lights ,TV and computer screens.Temperature no longer follows a cycle of cooling at night and warming during the day.Is it any wonder that a third of Americans have sleep problems?
Maybe you think this does not affect you —or at least not much. You are wrong.Research done on non-astronauts has shown the same thing. After two weeks of six hours of sleep a night ,you' re drunk.By the end of two weeks, the six-hour sleepers behaved as badly as those who hadn' t slept for 24 hours.
But what did they say when asked how they felt? “ It's not affecting me. ” So if you are performing poorly because of sleep problems ,you may have no idea. This is a real problem.
So what answers did NASA come up with?
Take an hour to calm down before bed.Yes ,you are busy. But your time is not more valuable than an astronaut' s.
Keep your bedroom dark ,cool and free from noise.Even if you think the light doesn ' t affect you or the noise isn ' t that bad,it can still affect sleep quality.
Another advice: forget the alarm clock in the morning; set an alarm to remind you to go to bed at night. When it goes off ,finish up any work on the computer ,and turn off any unnecessary lights. This prevents you from cheating yourself on sleep and allows you to wake up naturally.
33.What did NASA find about people ' s sleep?
A. It takes a long time to develop regular sleep times.
B. It' s stron gly in flue need by the outside world.
C. It rema ins un touched by outside in flue nces.
D. It' s hard to change one' s sleep habits.
34. The biggest problem of those who have n ' t eno ugh sleep lies in the fact that ________ .
A. they can' t fall asleep without the lights on
B. they don' t know whether they sleep well
C. they refuse to regulate their sleep times
D. they get too drunk to sleep well
35. What' s the advice on the alarm clock?
A . Use it to remind you to sleep.
B. Put it far away from your bed. C . Get up immediately whe n it rin gs. D . Pay no attention to it
when it rings. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
