Chinese New Year is approaching and preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.
London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London's Chinatown is a perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics(杂技), martial arts (武术), dance and opera nearby.San Francisco
San Francisco's Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bangkok
With an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital's Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.
Mauritius
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation's rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional Lion dances through the streets.

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. "It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone."Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young
3
people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, the Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. "The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person," said the 30-year-old man.Richardson describes traveling alone like "a shot in the arm", which "makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything." He said, "The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. "I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try."
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, "Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness."
8. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?
A. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
9. Traveling alone is challenging because.
A. it will finally build your character
B. you have to make things on your own
C. it is hard for you to prove yourself to others
D. you can only depend on yourself whatever happens
10.What can we infer about Chris Richardson ?
A. He started traveling alone at an early age.
B. He was once shot in the arm.
C. He used to work as a salesman.
D. His website inspires others a lot.
11.The best title for the passage is .
A. Travel Abroad

D. Travel Wide and Far

D
Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence(智力)developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied circumstances. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(随机地)from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical(完全相同的)twins they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.
12. Which of these sentences best describes the writer's point in Para.1?
A. To some extent, intelligence is given at birth.
B. Intelligence is developed by the environment.
C. Some people are born clever and others born stupid.
D. Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.
13. It is suggested in this passage that.
A. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligence
B. close relations usually have similar intelligence
5
C. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely
to be in intelligence
D. people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar
degrees of intelligence
14. In Para.1, the word "circumstances" means.
A. intelligence
B. life
C. housing
D. environments
15. The best title for this article would be.
A. On Intelligence
B. What Intelligence Means
C. We are Born with Intelligence
D. Environment Plays a Part in Developing Intelligence
