阅读理解
A
When we first moved into our present home, the houses only had a chainlink fence (钢丝网围栏) between them. People behind us were older; their children were in their late teens, and we didn't see them or hear from them much.
Time passed and a younger family moved in. While at first we thought this would be fun for the kids, it quickly became a pain. If one of our children had a birthday party, the neighbors would line up their children along the back fence to watch. We would have invited their children if they had been of the same age. While our older children had parties the neighbor's little kids would shout through the fence the entire time; we knew it was time to get a new fence.
When we built our fence next to the old one, they not only paid nothing for it, but watched us have it built. After we built our fence the mother of the house would call over and ask who was jumping on our trampoline (蹦床). She could only see the tops of their heads but couldn't figure out who it was. Good people, just too much interest in us. Years later they rebuilt their houses and built a pretty fence between the houses next to the old one. They were not surprised that we didn't want to pay for it. I have to admit their fence is much prettier than our wooden one.
Our yard is next to four other homes; each of the families has had his own home with a strong fence. We have left ours in place. While we love all our neighbors we are glad we have fences between each of us. Only in this way can we protect our little privacy (隐私), as fences certainly do make good neighbors.

I live in New York City, and my neighbors are people I don't know. My city, neighborhood and block are filled with people who don't know me, don't care to know me, and don't talk to me. I find that it's pretty hard to love people you don't even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan's story recently and was moved.
One day, Brendan, a young man in New York, was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for
money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered “no”. The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, “I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I will take you out for Chinese food.”
Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and difficult times together, over a period of eight years. When Brendan's heater broke, Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bringing him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back.
Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it,_Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her to Target, and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment.
May Brendan's story encourage us to find a new way to honor, serve and love the people around us.

Once again, I was at a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That was where the similarities ended.
I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to say no. Actually, no one had invited me to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest fashions, wanted to invite me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a tworo om place. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies —which was my next surprise. I would have thought she had outgrown (因长大而不适用……) them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walkin cupboa rd laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations.
We had a great time that afternoon. She showed me her outfits, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it sometimes used her as a model for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.
Paris charmed (吸引) the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free pieces. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses and spent every free moment together. I let my hair grow out and learned to love being tall.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through my tough teenage years and taught me an amazing thing about making friends: Your “worst enemy” can turn out to be your best friend.
