Lesson 9 A cold welcome
课⽂内容：
On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.
本⽂语法：介词与时间搭配
语法归纳：介词on, in, at, by, until/till, during与时间搭配的正确⽤法：
on 多⽤于表⽰某天或节⽇等相对特定的时间前
in 多⽤在年、⽉、季度等⼀段时间前
at 多⽤在具体的点或短暂时间前
by 多⽤于表⽰“在……之前”、“直到……时候”
during 经常表⽰在某⼀特定时间内
until/till 意为“直到”

1.On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall.
在星期三的晚上，我们去了市政厅。

语⾔点 the Town Hall=the City Hall市政厅
hall意为“⼤厅，⼤堂；过道，⾛廊”：school hall礼堂；meeting hall会议厅；exhibition hall展览厅；the Great Hall of the People⼈民⼤会堂
2.It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.
这是⼀年的最后⼀天了，很多⼈都⾃发地聚集在市政厅的钟下。

语⾔点 last的常⽤意义：
1）上⼀个：last year去年；last month上个⽉；last summer去年夏天
2）(=final)最后的：on the last/final day of summer vacaion在暑假的最后⼀天
3.It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time.
再过20分钟，⼤钟将敲响12下。

语⾔点1 "in+⼀段时间"可表⽰“⼀段时间之内”；也可⽤于表⽰“⼀段时间之后”，多⽤于将来时。

1）在……内：The bird covered the distance in 3 minutes.这只鸽⼦只⽤了3分钟就飞越了这段距离。

2）在……之后（多与将来时连⽤）：I will come back in 5 days.我将在5天后回来。

语⾔点2 would在此处表⽰过去将来时。
