After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was
dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.

Walk through the Amazon rainforest today and you will find it is steamy, warm, damp and thick. But if you had been around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold, dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.
Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global wanning. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year: equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2 ?
Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past. Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. To study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen, kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments (沉淀物)which requires specialized equipment
and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled (未取样).So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.
12.What does the underlined phrase "mopping up" in the second paragraph mean?
A.Giving up.
B. Giving out.
C. Wiping out.
D. Taking in.
13.How will the Amazon rainforest react to future climate change?
A.Ifll get drier and continue to remove CO2.
B.There is no exact answer up to present.
C.It'll get warmer and then colder and drier.
D.Ifll remain steamy, warm, damp and thick.
14.Whafs the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Ifs important to drill deep down into lake sediments to collect information.
B.Ifs impossible to prove how climate changes in the Amazon rainforest.
C.It's hard to collect information for studies of the past climate in the Amazon rainforest.
D.It's necessary to have specialized equipment and machinery to study the past climate.
15.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Studies of the Rainforests
B.Climates of the Amazon
C.Secrets of the Ice Age
D.Changes of the Rainforests
【答案】12.D 13. B 14. C 15. A
Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2each year:”可知,目前,亚马逊的树木每年吸收5亿吨二氧化碳,此处是说像亚马逊这样的热带雨林对吸收大气中的二氧化碳和缓解全球变暖非常重要,由此可知画线词词义为“吸收”,故D项正确。
根据第一段中的"For more 由an 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold, dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying
answer."可知,科学家们对亚马逊雨林如何应对气候变化这一问题到目前为止还没有得出确切的答案,故B 项正确。
【14题详解】
段落大意题。
根据最后一段内容,特别是根据“Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult."

Kids* health: Four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. 16 Some ways of dealing with stress 一like screaming or hitting someone — don't solve (解决)much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
(1 )Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. 17 They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
(2)Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.
18
(3)Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. 19 Even if you can't solve all of it, you can solve a piece of it.
(4)Be positive. Most stress is temporary (暂时的).Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time,
you'll help yourself feel better even faster. 20
A.Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B.Notice your friends* feelings and find a way to help them.
C.Different people feel stress in different ways.
D.Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E.You need to figure out what the problem is.
F.And don't forget about your friends.
G.Then, find a way to calm down.
C 17. F 18.A 19. E 20. D
C根据下文的Some ways of...和But other ways...
