She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. “We’re moving house.” “No space for her any more with the baby coming.” “We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present.” People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning (抛弃) an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.
I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner’s. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.
That’s why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I coul dn’t hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.
By the time I reached the farm. I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies 1 started to feel sympathy towards them. “We didn’t know what had happened to her,” sai d the woman at the door. “I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared.” “She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,” added a boy from behind her.
I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I’ve got Nugget now, and she looks just like her mother. And I’ve learnt a good lesson: not to judge people.

Over a century after the Titanic sank in April 1912, few new stories are discovered about the accident. The history of the Chinese passengers who escaped from the Titanic has nearly been forgotten, even in their homeland.
The average survival rate (存活率) for men in third class was just one in six. But when disaster happened, being a poor sailor with broken English turned into an advantage for the eight Chinese men onboard—and six of them didn’t die.
All eight Chinese men came from southern China. They had worked on cargo ships traveling between China and Europe, and they tried to move to the US to start a new life. They boarded the Titanic in Southampton, England, on a single ticket listing eight names. This was common for third-class passengers at that time. Like other unmarried third-class men, they were housed in windowless cabins (船舱).
When the ship hit an iceberg, the men living in the worst environment saw everything with their own eyes. Freezing water flooded into their living cabins, while passengers in first-class and second-class were told that nothing was serious. But these Chinese sailors didn’t understand the orders in English to stay in their rooms. Depending on their own survival skills, they left the ship quickly,
Five of the six Chinese survivors made it directly onto lifeboats, while the sixth, Fang Lang, was one of the few lucky people picked up by Lifeboat 14, the only boat to return and search for survivors. He was found floating (飘浮) on a door to which he had tied himself. After he was pulled, freezing, he helped row the lifeboat to safety and was praised for his efforts.
The six men’s lucky escape is little-known in China, though the story of the Titanic was quite popular in the nation. ()66. The eight Chinese men boarded the Titanic because they .
