“There’s a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talk about a kit she received.” the nurse told me. “Something about it made her cry.”
I’ve been a child-life specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital since 2000. I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child. Tough talks with parents are part of the job, it still makes me feel nervous.
The kits the nurse was talking about were something I had recently introduced to the hospital: Comfort Kits from Guideposts. They were supposed to make a child’s experience here easier, not upsetting.
When I came across the kits at a conference, I fell in love with them. A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain kids, but to comfort and inspire them. There’s a coloring book, a stress ball, a CD of relaxing music, a hairy star named Sparkle, a journal and much more. I really believed these kits would help kids. I wished I hadn’t been mistaken.
At the patient’s room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly, surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother’s. The kit was open on her lap a nd tears were running down her cheeks.
“I’m Shannon. I manage the Child Life Department.” I said. “I’m sorry if the kit upset you. It’s a new item…”
The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life. I felt so scared and alone. The n I was handed this box. I know it’s for my daughter, but it’s just the comfort I needed. I wanted to say thank you.”
With that I knew Comfort Kits belonged here. We’ve been using them for almost three years now. Each child who’s admitted to the hospital r eceives one. Every day I see kids
coloring, journaling, playing with Sparkle.
But as this mom showed me Comfort Kits aren’t just for kids. The hope they bring, which can be in short supply in hospitals sometimes, is felt by the whole family.
4.The author introduced Comfort Kits to the hospital to_________.

B.Kits are in great need in hospitals.

D.Medical supplies are not enough in hospitals.

C.Nervous. D.Confident.
My 23-year-old car was unsafe and I decided it was time to trade it for a less old one.
I found myself then at a local used car lot looking at a 12-year-old car. There was no way for me to afford a new car, but this one seemed in fine shape. I made the deal and drove it home.
It wasn’t long, however, before I noticed a squealing (振鸣声). I made an appointment at a local repair factory. The heat of the day made me turn on the air conditioner but no cold air came out. This made me worry more. I wondered if I’d made a big mistake.
When I arrived at the repair factory, I sat in the waiting room. The warmth and beauty of the day was too good to ignore. I walked outside. Walking around the parked cars, I noticed some beautiful flowers. As I looked down at them, a single white butterfly flew down and landed on them. Butterflies had for years held a special place in my heart. They always reminded me of my mother and her love for me. I smiled when I saw this one and felt in my heart peace and joy I hadn’t felt for a long time. I realized then that while the repairers were making a few minor repairs on my car, God was making a few minor repairs on my soul.
Life is too short to allow fear and worry to rule our days. We’re here on earth to love each
other and we’re reminded of this in countless ways every day. My “new” car is running now and I’m doing my best to keep my soul doing the same. May you always keep your own soul open to whatever minor repairs you meet with in life.
8.Why was the author worried?
A.He was unable to afford a new car.
B.His “new” car couldn’t be used again.
C.Repairing would cost him much money.
D.Something was wrong with his “new” car.
9.What made the author walk out of the waiting room?
A.The long and boring wait. B.The white butterfly.
C.The good weather. D.Beautiful flowers.
10.The author began to feel good when___________.
A.he got much closer to nature B.he felt the warmth of the day
C.he thought of his mother’s love D.his “new” car was repaired
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.A few minor repairs B.The power of nature
C.The way to repair your soul D.Happy memories of my mom
Parents have worked hard to teach the most important life lessons to their babies. They remind kids to eat with a knife and fork, and not to make noises in public. But there’s one important lesson that parents might forget, and it can’t be covered in a sim ple conversation. In fact, they’d better teach kids by example.
According to a study, babies receive more than genes(基因)from their parents. They can also absorb good qualities, such as persistence, by watching how adults behave. Researchers at MIT said that babies who watched an adult struggling with and then succeeding in something were more likely to show persistence when given a new task.
The team at MIT studied 262 babies between the ages of 13 and 18 months. They were divided into three groups. In the first group, the lead researcher struggled with two different toys’ problems before solving them, letting the babies watch when she did so. In the second group, the researcher solved the problems but did not struggle with them. And for the third group, she did not do anything.
After that, the researcher left the children playing with a small musical toy. She showed
the babies that it could play music but did not teach them how to turn it on. The babies in the first group discovered and pressed the toy’s but ton many more times than those in the last two groups. In other words, the babies did not copy what they had watched; they learned not to give up, instead.
Now researchers are interested in exploring which ways influence babies most. They wonder if the results can work in the real world, and whether the lesson of persistence might last into adulthood. After all, persistence is one of the most important qualities of the successful people.
12.What does the underlined part “one important lesson” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A.Behaving politely in public. B.Setting an example to kids.
C.Using a knife and fork properly. D.Teaching kids necessary life skills. 13.How did the team at MIT mainly carry out the study?
A.By doing a research. B.By playing with kids.
C.By analyzing some facts. D.By interviewing babies.
14.What can be learned from the study?
A.Kids in the first group turned on the musical toy.
B.Kids could copy the same behavior of the researcher.
C.The first group kids tried more times to turn on the toy.
D.Kids in the last two groups had the same performance.
15.Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.Parents should spend more time with babies.
B.Parents should pay attention to their behavior.
C.Persistence is an important quality for parents.
D.Babies should be taught social skills from birth.
