Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times. Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. In many cultures white is often associated with something positive. A white-collar job, for instance, is the kind of job many people look for, working with your brain and not your hands.
White has a clean and pure image. That is why doctors, dentists, and nurses usually wear white uniforms. Babies are dressed in white at baptisms(洗礼)and brides wear white wedding gowns at weddings. White in these cases is the symbol of innocence or purity.
Sometimes white is used in expressions that are not good. “Whitewash” is one such expression. At fir st, “whitewash” meant to paint over something with white paint to make it look better. However, it means something
different today: to hide or to cover up mistakes or failures.
A “white elephant” is another example of white used in a negative way. In ancie nt Thailand, a white elephant was regarded as a sacred(神圣的)animal, but it was very expensive to keep. The kings of those days presented a white elephant to the people they wanted to ruin. Once they received this holy, royal animal as a gift, they were not allowed to sell or kill it. Today, a “white elephant” means something that is big, useless, and unwanted. In America, when people want to get rid of their furniture or clothes, they often have a “white elephant sale”.

Grandma Moses is among the most famous twentieth –century painters of the United States, yet she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said of herself:“I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could ha ve had a more productive old age.
She,Anna Mary Robertson, was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until, at twenty-seven, she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. Bridge. She had ten children , of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery(刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore(杂货店) and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted . Three of the pictures exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures: detailed and lively portrayals(描绘) of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it.”she said. 66.According to the passage, Grandma Moses began to paint because she wanted to ________.

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful(有压力的)conditions.Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems.People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.Social support cushions stress in a number of ways.First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us.Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and
difficulties.Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them.Third, we typically find social companionship supportive.Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移注意力)us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support —money aid, material resources, and needed services —that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.
71.Interpersonal relationships are important because they can _______.

第四部分写作(满分45分)
第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,然后用英语简洁回答文后所给的五个问题。
[1]Intense physical exercise is not the only way to better health. Studies show that walking several times a week can lower the risk of many diseases. They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss, arthritis (关节炎), and depression. Walking also can help you lose weight.
[2]Fast walking is good for the heart. It lowers the blood pressure. It raises the amount of good cholesterol(胆固醇) in the blood. Researchers say walking can sharply reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack.
[3]Studies have also shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can delay and possibly prevent the development of diabetes. People who are overweight have an especially high risk to develop this disease.
[4]Walking strengthens the muscles and builds up the bones that they are attached to. Studies show that walking could decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis (骨质疏松症). Walking can also help ease the pain of arthritis in areas where bones are joined. This is because walking strengthens the muscles around the bones.
[5]Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for people who are starting an exercise program for the first time and for older people.
[6]A walking program is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and good shoes. There are shoes that are designed especially for lots of walking.
[7]How fast should you walk? For the best effect, doctors say you should walk fast enough to cause you to breathe hard. Yet you should still be able to talk. Let your arms move freely while ________.
[8]There are no rules to starting a walking program. You might walk short distances. Or you might walk up hills to strengthen your leg muscles. Health experts say you can gain the most from walking if you walk at about five kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day. You should do this about five times a week.
