Do dogs understand us?
Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.
A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its
word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot〔鹦鹉〕or chimpanzee〔黑猩猩〕.
In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog c ouldn’t see anyone to get clues〔线索〕, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.
The correct object was chosen in seven out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination〔排除法〕. A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.
Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed〔品种〕known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.
It’s hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can’t talk back. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!
56. The author wrote the first paragraph with the purpose of ____________.
A. reminding you to speak in a low voice around your dog
B. warning you to keep your secret before your dog
C. showing that dogs are cleverer than you think
D. attracting your attention to the following part of the passage
57. The reason why Rico is able to choose the item it has never seen before is that ______.
A. the dog can use the sense of smell
B. the dog can use its thinking properly
C. the item is different from the others in shape
D. the item is a bit similar to the others
58. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Rico must have had a long-term training.
B. Rico has as much intelligence as a 3-year-old child.
C. The author thinks it silly to have a word with your dog.
D. The author thinks it unhealthful to be kissed by a dog.
59. From the passage we can infer that _____________.
A. The owner of Rico wants to gain fame through the experiments
B. Every dog understand the meanings of human words
C. Dogs of different breeds may have different levels of mental abilities
D. Animal training shouldn’t be encouraged

Early every morning, a shepherd took his flock 〔一群〕of sheep out in the fields to graze〔放牧〕. He would sit by watching as the sheep lazily munched on fresh grass. After they had eaten, he would round them up and walk back home. Sometimes while watching his flock, he would lie in a quiet corner and go to sleep.
One day, the shepherd caught a wolf which had strayed〔走失〕into the field, eyeing his sheep. However, it was some distance away and it made no effort to come nearer. The shepherd at first stood on guard against the wolf, as against an enemy, and kept a strict watch over its movements.
But the wolf did not do anything. When the shepherd grazed the sheep and headed home with his flock, the wolf quietly followed them at a distance.
This continued for a while. The shepherd would find the wolf waiting at the edge of the field every morning. But it made not the slightest effort to seize the sheep and would just watch. So, by and by, the shepherd let down his guard a bit. A few days later, he began to actually look forward to the wolf’s presence.
The wolf, who generally sat on a large piece of rock, looked like a big sheep dog from a great distance. The shepherd thought that other wild animals would be scared of the wolf’s presence and not harm his flock while it was around.
Now, he began to look upon the wolf as a guardian of his flock. One day, in the middle of grazing his sheep, the shepherd was called back home urgently. Leaving the sheep entirely in the charge of the wolf, he left.
When he came back, he found that the wolf had killed most of his flock, with only a few sheep wandering about. Bodies of the dead sheep lay around, everywhere.
The shepherd sat down in shock and whispered to himself, “ Why did I trust my sheep to a wolf ?〞
60. Which of the following best shows the meaning of the passage?
A. The death of the wolves, the safety of the sheep.
B. The wolf may lose his teeth, but never his nature.

D. Never wake a sleeping wolf.
61. The underlined word “ munched〞( in Paragraph 1 ) means “___________〞.

A. it wanted the shepherd to trust it
B. it was far away from the sheep
C. it had enough food to eat
D. it wanted to be the guardian of the sheep
63. After several days, the shepherd expected the wolf to _________________.
A. kill other animals
B. help to guard his sheep
C. follow him back home
D. round his sheep up
C
Play is the basic business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest childhood, every child needs the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. The main function of toys is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this, they must be good toys, which children will play with often and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development.
In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities is largely determined in the first three years of his life. A baby who is encouraged, talked to, shown things and played with has the best chance of growing up successfully.
In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toys should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability.
At the third stage of play development -from five to seven or eight years old -the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child enjoys most.
Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books become the main source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, which lead up to new hobbies, but their significance has changed -to a child of nine or ten years old, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun.
64. What toys can be considered good toys?
A. Ones that can arouse children’s lasting interest.
B. Ones that can develop children’s curiosity.
C. Ones that can be used to be shared with others.
D. Ones that can provide games for relaxation and fun.
65. What does the un derlined part “Curiosity knows no bounds 〞in the third paragraph mean ?
A. Children are curious about everything.
B. Nothing can arouse children’s interest.
C. Children’s curiosity is limited for lack of toys.
D. Curiosity plays an important part in childhood.
66. After a child has mastered reading, _______________.
A. play is still the best way of learning for him
B. he mainly depends on books to learn
C. he is no longer interested in toys
D. he expects more advanced toys
67. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. How to choose suitable toys for children
B. The importance of pre-school education
C. The role of toys in a child’s development
D. Parents’ attitude towards toys
D
Seema and Reema were highly excited. Their uncle was coming today. It wasn’t the actual arrival that excited them, but it was the thought of the gifts he would bring for them. There would certainly be gifts, of which they were sure. But there was nothing they could do but wait.

Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we carried out on whether it is necessary for middle school students to have mobile phones.
The majority of the students think that students should have mobile phones because they think that it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have mobile phones. Beside s, they can send messages and take pictures with mobile phones. And what’s more, it’s a fashion.
However, most teachers don’t think so. They think that middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. With mobile phones, students may play games, send messages or take photos, which is a waste of time and affects their studies. Besides, it is reported that mobile phones can produce radiation, which does harm to their health.
In my opinion, as middle school students, we should not follow the fashion. Instead, we should put all our heart into our studies.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
