When the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris (巴黎圣母院) was on fire, it seemed
as if the nation had lost a piece of its soul. A similar tragedy took place in 19th
century Russia. And the rebuilding effort of the Russians might offer some
inspiration for the French.
Standing in the heart of the Russian capital, with 60,000 square meters of floor
space and 1,500 rooms, the Winter Palace was among the world’s grandest building.
On Dec. 17, 1837, a fire broke out at the Winter Palace. By the morning of Dec.19,
only the structure’s framework remained.
For the czar (沙皇) , the fire presented a political challenge. Fearing that Russia's enemies would cast the fire as a blow to the czarist orders, the czar’s supporters quickly worked together to shape the description of the fire in Russia and abroad. They wanted the country to appear united. And they certainly didn't want despair to become the story.
The first full account of the fire was written in French by the poet Petr Viazemskii. A Russian translation appeared two months later. That text and others painted a highly idealized picture of the response to the tragedy. The accounts noted that the czar forcefully directed the fire’s containment. Soldiers were selfless to save the palace. The Russian people felt the loss just as deeply as the czar.
To erase the shame of the fire, the czar set a nearly impossible goal: rebuild the palace within 15 months, and he ordered that rebuilt palace look exactly as it had before.Thousands of workers labored on the construction site. They made rapid progress. On Match 25, 1839, the czar celebrated the rebirth of the Winter Palace.
Outwardly identical to the old version, the new palace featured more iron and brick in its structures---and less wood. It was far less fire-prone than the original.
Notre Dame hasn’t experienced the same level of destruction as the Winter Palace, if the Russian phoenix of 1839 is any indication, there is hope that a renewed Notre Dame will once again grace the banks of the Seine.
24.What do we know about the fire in the Winter Palace?
A. It burnt down 60,000 rooms
B. It lasted more than 24 hours
C. It was set by Russia’s enemies
D. It completely destroyed the palace
25.Why did the czar decide to rebuild the palace in a short time?
A. To secure his power
B. To challenge his enemies
C. To unite French people
D. To celebrate his birthday
26.What did Viazemskii and others stress in their accounts?
A. The scene of the fire
B. The selflessness of the czar
C. The Russians’ joint effort to fight the fire
D. The ideal result
achieved by the Russians.
27.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To describe a fire at the Winter Palace
B. To praise the renewal of the Winter Palace
C. We express sympathy for the Notre Dame
D. To inspire confidence in rebuilding the Notre Dame.

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just
an avatar that appears on the student’s desktop, or smartphone screen,
when ordered to come.
The autonomous animation platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach Vector’s “Be sustainable with energy”— a free program for Auckland elementary schools.
Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal cues. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way interaction not only helps attract the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their engagement, and make changes if needed.
Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver cost-effective, rich, educational experience in the future.”
The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “ What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really
captured their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon.
28.What was special for some elementary school students in Auckland?
A. A digital teacher taught them.
B. They first saw something digital.
C. This was the start of a new school year.
D. They could get close to smartphone screen.
29.What is the benefit of this two-way interaction?
A. It can smile back.
B. It can use microphone.
C. It can talk any topic for free.
D. It can change if necessary.
30.What’s Ravishankar’s attitude to Will’s replacing Human educators soon?
A. Optimistic.
B. Doubtful.
C. Unclear.
D. Disapproving.
31.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. New High-tech Contributes to Education
B. The World’s First Digital Teacher Appears in Classroom.
C. The World’s First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students
D. New Zealand Will Replace Teachers in Classrooms
D
If maths is the language of the universe, bees may have just uttered their first words. New research suggests these busybodies of the insect world are capable of addition and subtraction (减法)—using colors in the place of plus and minus symbols.
In the animal kingdom, the ability to count—or at least distinguish between differing quantities—isn’t unusual: It has been seen in frogs, spiders, and even fish. But solving equations (方程式) using symbols is rare, so far only achieved by famously brainy animals such as chimpanzees and African grey parrots.
Building on previous research that says the social insects can count to four and understand the concept of zero, researchers wanted to test the limits of what their tiny brains can do.
Scientists trained 14 bees to link the colors blue and yellow to addition and
subtraction, respectively. They placed the bees at the entrance of a Y-shaped maze (迷宫), where they were shown several shapes in either yellow or blue. If the shapes were blue, bees got a reward if they went to the end of the maze with one more blue shape (the other end had one less blue shape); if the shapes were yellow, they got a reward if they went to the end of the maze with one less yellow shape.
The testing worked the same way: Bees that “subtracted” one shape when they saw yellow, or “added” one shape when they saw blue were considered to have aced the test. The bees got the right answer 63% to 72% of the time, depending on the type of equation and the direction of the right answer—much better than random guesses would allow—the researchers report today in Science Advances.
Though the results came from just 14 bees, researchers say the advance is exciting. If a brain about 20,000 times smaller than ours can perform maths using symbols, it could pave the way to novel approaches in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Just don’t ask the bees to do your homework anytime soon.
32.Why do the scientists conduct the research?
A. To teach them maths.
B. To test the power of tiny brains.
C. To explain the meaning of colors.
D. To get access to machine learning.
33.What does the underlined word “aced” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Given up.
B. Entered for.
C. Got through.
D. Checked over.
34.What might the research make contributions to?
A. Language acquisition.
B. Arithmetic learning.
C. Protection of animals.
D. Development of AI.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A. Bees “Like” Counting
B. Bees “Tell” Colors Apart
C. Bees “Perform” Maths Using Shapes
D. Bees “Get” Addition and Subtraction

第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)
第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
The information I 61.(collect) over the last few years leads me to believe that speed reading may be less 62.(use) than most people think. The claim that you can read and comprehend over 30,000 words per minute is overstated. One researcher proved this in a study where irrelevant and illogical sentences were added to a text. The “speed readers” 63. were tested didn’t notice the irrelevant lines — the non-speed readers spotted them immediately.
I’ve interviewed people who have attended the introductory sessions 64. (offer) by some speed reading courses. 65. (them) stories indicate that improper methods are sometimes used to sell the courses. Here’s how: First, you’re asked to read a passage from a book 66. which most persons would be unfamiliar. Your reading speed and comprehension are tested during this exercise. Then, after about half 67. hour of instruction, another reading test is given. But this time the reading is one most educated Americans know well — such as Huckleberry Finn. Not 68. (surprising), persons attending these introductory sessions find that their “exit” speed and comprehension are better than their “entry”69. (perform).
I’m one of the fiction readers who appreciate the beauty in good writing. Occasionally I’ll read a passage or sentence over and over just 70. (let) the beauty of its construction soak(参透) in. Good writing must be read carefully and thoughtfully to be fully appreciated.

Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English. Which is good, to study in Britain or in your own country?
The benefits of going to Britain seems obvious. You will listen to the language all the time, surround completely by the language wherever you would go and have to speak English if you are with the local people. In China, there is always possible to speak Chinese in class and the learning is slower. Besides, there are also advantage of studying at home. You don’t have make big changes to your life. And of course, it’s much cheaper than going to Britain.
In my view, for most people without enough money, being at home is their only choice.
A most important thing to do in this situation is make good use of your opportunities —speaking only English in class and using English whenever possibly outside the class.
