Over the years I have been interested to read about studies into the power of touch. A study found that holding hands to comfort a loved one can actually reduce their pain. Through a process that’s not fully understood, if one of them is in pain, the pain appears to reduce.
I’ve seen this so many times when the husband or wife of a patient in discomfort reaches out and holds their hand, and as if by magic, in a few minutes they become less painful. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, as we have known for many years about the importance of touch. It symbolizes safety and love.
The value of touch was proved by a series of experiments on monkeys back in the 1950s
by Harry Harlow, an American scientist. His work showed the unbelievable drive for warmth and intimacy (亲密) that we all have. In his experiments, he gave young monkeys a choice between a “mother” made of wire mesh (铁丝网) that had a ready supply of milk and the other a warm, soft mother that did not provide any food. They chose, to everyone’s surprise, the comfort over food. This was unexpected because it had always been thought that food was the main motivator (动力) for living creatures. Yet this appeared to show that it was not food, but being comforted and intimate, that was the most important thing. He described these experiments as a study of love and they showed for the first time how important the feeling of being loved is to us. And his idea has been supported by countless further scientific studies.
Personally I find this so comforting. For me, this really speaks of the power of love. 19.According to the writer and studies, ________.
A.touch can treat illnesses B.touch by anyone can reduce pain C.touch by a loved one can reduce pain D.we’ve known why touch can reduce pain 20.What can we learn from Harry Harlow’s experiments?
A.Monkeys were not interested in milk at all.
B.Monkeys were different from other living creatures.
C.Monkeys liked being comforted and intimate as well.
D.Monkeys were afraid of the “mother” made of wire mesh.
21.How did people feel about the result of the experiments in the 1950s? A.Disappointed.B.Satisfied.C.Interested.D.Unbelievable. 22.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.The latest study.B.Ways to comfort.C.The power of touch.D.A funny experiment.
Some people might think that young people are too young to know what they want. But people like Lu Kaigang prove them all wrong.
Lu, 23, a fashion model from China, grew up walking the roads in the countryside in Guangxi. Now, he walks on some of the largest fashion catwalks in the world.
________. “I have had a supermodel dream since I was 10 while I was still in primary school. I saw a fashion show on TV and I felt it was so cool to do that on the runway,” Lu said.
Although Lu didn’t have much money or any professional training, that didn’t stop him from chasing his dream. Lu collected pieces of cloth from the factory he worked at and made
So, for the next day, I had to live without a phone: no calls, no texts, no social media. And what I discovered was that I really didn’t miss making phone calls or getting text messages or reading social media posts. It was actually relaxing. For that whole day, I was able to stop living in a “virtual” world and start living in the “real” world.
Smartphones have changed the way we live. They are sources of communication, information and entertainment. All of these things are good, but too much of these things can also be bad. There is a chemical in your brain called dopamine (多巴胺). Activities like watching videos cause your brain to get this chemical. It gives you pleasure. For many people, these feelings of “pleasure” will increase the more they use their smartphones. This explains why you may feel upset when you can’t use yours. You have, in fact, become addicted (上瘾) to dopamine, the “happy hormone”. To treat this increasingly common addiction, some places are experimenting with the idea of “no digital hours”. In the Indian village of Vadgaon, for example, people are being forced to turn off their phones and TVs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every night.
Smartphones are great, but you should be smart about using them. Put them away in your pocket for a while and enjoy the real world... but you should still be careful about getting into taxis.
27.The writer leads in the topic mainly by ________.
A.listing reasons B.comparing facts C.giving an example D.asking a question 28.According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A.The writer lost his phone in the taxi and got very angry.
B.The writer’s work was influenced badly without his phone.
C.The dopamine makes us upset when we can’t use phones.
D.The dopamine caused by using phones makes us happy.
29.Paragraph 3 mainly tells us ________.

A.we should use our smartphones wisely
