Before many teaching buildings in China, there is a statue (雕像) of Zu Chongzhi, a mathematician in ancient China. The cities of Xi'an and Beijing have many monuments (纪念碑) and statues of important persons in the long history of China. All Chinese children know about the Forbidden City where the emperors (皇帝) lived, Tian'anmen Square, the Summer Palace and Tiantan.
Americans have their monuments and statues as well. The most important ones are in the capital city of Washington D. C.
The tallest is the Washington Monument, a very tall building that looks like a spear (矛) or arrow (箭) shooting into the sky. George Washington is called the father of the United States. He was the General who defeated the British army. The people made him the first President of the United States in 1789.
The largest is the Lincoln Memorial (纪念碑), a building where a statue of Abraham Lincoln is sitting in a chair looking toward the Washington Monument. Lincoln was the president during the American Civil War. He set all black slaves free in 1863.
Perhaps the most beautiful monument is the Jefferson Memorial. A statue of Thomas
Jefferson stands on top of it, and he is remembered as a president and as the writer of the Declaration of Independence (《
The Capital Building is the place where laws are made. The White House is where the president lives. The Library of Congress is one of the largest libraries in the world.
If you go to Washington D.C., these are the monuments, statues and buildings you should see to understand American history and culture.
1.Monuments and statues are built________.
A. in order not to forget persons who did a great deal for his country
B. so as to make the city more beautiful
C. so that children gather together here
D. as a part of the city

2.Which of the monuments is the most beautiful in Washington D. C.?
A. Washington Monument.
B. Jefferson Memorial.
C. Lincoln Memorial.
D. The Monuments for the Unknown Heroes (英雄).
答案与解析 B 由原文第五段中的“Perhaps the most beautiful monument is the Jefferson Memorial.”

3.What is the Capital Building?
A. It is where the White House is.
B. It is where the most important monuments are.
C. It is where meetings are held and laws are made.
D. It is where the Library of Congress is.
答案与解析 C 根据原文倒数第二段中“The Capital Building is the place where laws are made.”

4.In order to know well about American history and culture, it is necessary to have a look at ________ in Washington if possible.
A. the parks
B. the library
C. the monuments and statues
D. famous universities
答案与解析 C 根据文章最后一段“If you go to Washington D.C.,these are the monuments, statues and buildings you should see to understand American history and culture.”
