2. The teacher who changed my life didn't do it by encouraging her students to stand on their desks or by carrying a baseball bat through the halls. She did it by telling me I was good at something.
When I met Ms. Spicer, I had just moved to Florida from Brooklyn. Most of my teachers seemed to look past me. I was one more student among
hundreds. Ms. Spicer, however, took a special interest. "You can write, ', she said. She wanted to move me into the honors English class (英语快班). But because of scheduling problem, I couldn't transfer (转班). So instead, Ms. Spicer told me to ignore everything she wrote on the blackboard for the rest of the year, sit there and do the honors work.
A decade later, when my first novel was published, I went back to Ms. Spicer's classroom handing her a copy of my book. "And I wrote this for you." Ms. Spicer began to
cry. She'd been considering early retirement because she felt she wasn't having enough of an effect on her students. I didn't know how to make Ms. Spicer understand what she'd done for me. It was her belief in me that gave me the confidence to become a writer. I owed her.
Thirteen years later, when I heard that she was finally ready to retire. I wanted to surprise Ms. Spicer at her going﹣away party. Ms. Spicer stood up and delivered a speech that began like this: "For those of you complaining that kids have changed, and that it's harder to teach these days, you're getting old and lazy. These kids haven't changed. You have! Don't give them up!"
Many people also don't use sunscreen properly applying inadequate amounts, failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long. It is sunburn that increases the risk of all skin cancers.
The good news is that combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanomas rates, as shown by American figures from their slip﹣slop﹣slap campaign. So if there is a heat wave this summer, it would be best for us, too, to slip on a shirt, use sunscreen and slap on a hat.
When she finished her speech, the crowd applauded like a thunder. That was the woman I remembered! I realized that night that I was still, and would forever be, her student.
(1)How did Ms. Spicer encourage the writer?________
A By asking him to carry a baseball bat through the hall.
B By telling him he could do well in studies.
C By telling him he was able to write.
D By asking him to stand on desks.
(2)When the writer just moved to the school,________.
A all his classmates paid special attention to him.
B he was famous for his good writing skills.
C most teachers considered him common.
D no one took interest in him.
(3)Why did Ms. Spicer cry when seeing the writer?________
A She was extremely excited to see the writer again.
B She was really touched by the writer.
C No students were affected by her.
D No students visited her for long.
(4)What is the purpose of the text?________
A To honor Ms.
B To surprise Ms.
C To introduce Ms.
D To recall the
writer's past.
3. It is important to protect yourself from harmful rays. But if you think a high﹣factor sunscreen (高倍防晒霜) keeps you safe from harmful rays, you may be wrong. Research shows that while factor 50 reduces the number of melanomas (黑瘤) and delays their occurrence, it can't prevent them. Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers. You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes, or sunburn easily, or if a close relative has had one. Melanomas are more common if you have periodic exposure to the sun. Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long﹣term exposure. There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas ﹣ the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer. A 2011 American study of 1, 612 people found that people who applied sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed. A second study, comparing 1, 167 people with melanomas to 1, 101 who didn't have the cancer, found that using sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection ﹣ not sunscreen ﹣seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives, so it's not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun.
(1)What's people's common expectation of a high﹣factor sunscreen?________
A It will protect them from sunburn.
B It will keep their skin smooth and
fair. C It will work for people of any skin color. D It will delay the occurrence of skin cancer.
(2)What can we learn from the second paragraph?________
A Sunscreen can prevent all kinds of skin cancers.
B The studies are based on direct observation of the subjects.
C The Studies may help people select the most effective sunscreen.
D Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the rate of melanomas.
(3)What does the author suggest in order to reduce melanomas rates?________
A Staying in the shade whenever possible.
B Using covering up instead of sunscreen.
C Using both covering up and sunscreen.
D Applying the right amount of sunscreen.
(4)What is the best title for the text?________
A No Way to Stop Harmful Rays!.
B Does Sunscreen Prevent Skin Cancer?.
C Did You Use Sunscreen in the Right Way?.
D Skin Cancer ﹣ the Biggest Threat to Human Beings!.
4. The future of Australia's solar industry is looking bright after 3.5m﹣panels were installed on rooftops last year, giving the equal output of a medium﹣sized coal﹣fired power station.
