A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away . That’s the finding of an extensive study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day than those who never ate fish .
The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific backing to the long-held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits , particularly to the heart .
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States , with more than 550, 000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year . But researchers previously have noticed that the incidence (发生率)of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do . There are fewer heart disease deaths , for example , among the Eskimos of Greenland , who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day , and among the Japanese , whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces .
For 20 years , the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men , 20 percent of whom ate no fish . At the start of the study , the average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day with more men eating lean (瘦的) fish than fatty fish .
During the next two decades , 78 of the men died from heart disease . The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish , even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or
Eskimos . This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age , high blood pressure , or blood cholesterol (胆固醇) levels .

You may be spending far too many of your present moments in efforts to win the approval of others , or in being concerned with some disapproval that you have encountered . We all enjoy applause , compliments (恭维) and praise , and approval in itself is not unhealthy . Approval —seeking is a misleading zone only when it becomes a need rather than a want .
If you want the approval , you are simply happy to have the recognition of the other people . But if you need it , you are going to break down if you don’t get it . That’s when the self-destructive forces move in . Similarly , when approval—seeking becomes a need , you give up a large part of yourself to the “outside person” whose advocacy(拥护)you must have. If they disapprove , then you are immobilized (使丧失机动性)(even in a small way). In such a case ,
you have chosen to wear your self-worth on your sleeve for someone to rub or not to rub as they see fit . You feel good inside only if they decide to praise you .
The need for approval of another person is bad enough , but the real trouble comes with the need for the approval of everyone for every act . If you carry around such a need , then you are bound for a great deal of misery and frustration in your life . Moreover , you will be incorporating a wish —washy (脆弱无力的)non—person self —image that will result in the kind of self—rejection .
The need for approval must go ! No question makes there . It must be completely got rid of from your life if you are to gain personal fulfillment . Such need is a psychological dead end , with absolutely no benefits to you .
66.Approval—seeking is healthy when .
A.you need the approval
B.you only want the approval
C.you need the approval of everyone for every act
D.you don’t care about the approval
67.The self-destructive forces move in when .
A.you need the approval and you get it
B.you want the approval and you get it
C.you need the approval but you don’t get it
D.you want the approval but you don’t get it
68.What does the sentence “You have chosen to wear your self-worth on your sleeve for someone to rub or not to rub as they see fit.” mean ?
A.You have decided to give up yourself worth in order to get the approval .
B.You have decided to change yourself worth in order to get the approval .
C.You have decided to show yourself worth to others and allow them to make a judgment .
D.You have decided to put yourself worth in other’s hand and allow them to keep it or hurt it as they like .
69.The need for the approval of everyone for every act will eventually result in .
A.self-rejection B.real troubles C.misery D.frustration 70.What can we infer from the passage ?
A.People can benefit from the need of the approval .
B.Both the want and need for approval are unhealthy .
C.The need for the approval is a destructive feeling and people must get rid of it .
D.Since everyone enjoys praise and compliment, approval—seeking is a natural human need .
D
The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of living . People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor . Economists study the causes of
poverty in order to find solutions to the problem .
As the general standard of living in the country rises , the poverty line does , too . Therefore , even with today’s relatively high standard of living, about 10 percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line . However , if these people had stable jobs , they could have an acceptable standard of living . Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs .
For one thing , more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work . Over 40 percent of the poor people are children . By law , children less than 16 yeas old cannot work in many industries A large number of poor people are old . Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old , the normal retirement age .
Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons : they are sick , they do not have any motivation , they have family problems , or they do not believe that they can find a job .
Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one . Many poor adults never went to high school . Therefore , when they look for jobs , they have few skills that they can offer .
At the present time , the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways .
First , if the national economy grows , businesses and industries hire more workers . Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may find employment . Then they will no longer be below the poverty line .
Second , if society invests in the poor , the poor will become more productive . If the government spends money on social programs , education ,and training for poor people , the poor will have the skills to offer . Then it is more likely that they can find jobs .
Finally , if the government distributes society’s income differently , it raises some poor people above the poverty line . The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor . These payments to the poor are called welfare . In 1975 over 18 million people in the United States received welfare .
Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem . However , at the present time , many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living . 71.The author’s main purpose to write this article is .
A.to define what the poverty line is
B.to explain why some people live the poverty line
C.to find solutions to the problem of poverty
D.to show sympathy for those poor people
72.Which of the following is NOT true ?
A.Ten percent of the Americans live a poor life .
B.Poor people are those who live below the poverty line .
C.The poverty line rises as the general standard of living rises .
D.The poverty line tends to be at the same level .
73.More than 40 percent of the poor people are children . This is mainly because .
A.they do not have enough motivation
B.they are so young that they don’t have the right to work
C.they fail to get enough education
D.they are very poor in health
74.Most of the American poor people are not qualified for employment because .
A.they do not have any motivation to work
B.they are not very self-confident
C.they are too young or too old to work
D.they have physical and family problems
75.We may concluded from the passage that .
A.better solutions to the poverty problem are not yet found
B.welfare will enable them to be rich
C.poor people are sure to go out of the poverty line if they have chances to do business
D.employment is the best solution to the poverty problem

In kindergarten your idea of a good friend was the person who let you have the red crayon when all that were left were the ugly black ones .
In third grade your idea of a good friend was the person who shared his or her lunch with you when you forgot yours on the bus .
In eighth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pack up your childhood stuff so that your room would be a “middle school student’s” room , but didn’t laugh at you when you finished and broke out into tears .
In eleventh grade your idea of a good friend was the person who came to comfort you when you broke up with someone .
In twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pick out a university , assured you that you would get into that university and helped you deal with your parents , who were having a hard time to adjust to letting you go .
At graduation your idea of a good friend was the person who was crying on the inside but managed the biggest smile one could give as they congratulated you .
Now , your idea of a good friend is still the person who gives you the better of the two choices ; holds your hand when you’re scared ; thinks of you when you are not there ; reminds you of what you have forgotten ; helps you put the past behind you , but understands when you need to hold on to it a little longer ; stays with you so that you have confidence ; goes out of their way to make time for you ; helps you clear up your mistakes ; helps you deal with pressure from others ; smiles for you when you are sad ; helps you become a better person ; and , loves you !

One possible version :
As is shown in the chart , most of the middle school students only have less than 7 hour s’
sleep each day , some even no more than 6 hours , which is much less than required .
There are several reasons for this . First of all , the students are burdened with too much homework . They have to bury themselves in doing homework all the while . Another important reason is that schools and parents pay much more attention to their grades than health . But , in fact , this will be of great harm to their health .
As we all know , all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy . In order to improve the studen t’s living and studying conditions , measures should be taken without delay . First , give the students less homework . Second, find a better way to teach and learn . Last but not least , to improve the teaching and learning efficiency is the best policy .

W:Oh, my classmate’s going there too . Are you driving ? Maybe you two could ride together .
M:No. I’ve already got my train ticket . I’m visiting a friend I met last summer . Remember I went to a music camp ? I shared a room with Laura and now she’s just moved to a new place .
W:You two probably have a lot to talk about . I’ve never been to New York City before .
Guess what we are going to do on Saturday night .
M:Something to do with music , I bet .
W:Right . We are going to a concert .
M:Wow , I wish I were going with you .

W:It looks like we are going to have a shower any minute now .
M:I think so too . Isn’t it strange that you can sense it ?
W:Look at the clouds in the sky . Whenever they seem dark and low like this , you know it’s going to rain . Or look at the faraway objects. If they seem clear to you , it’s going to
pour .
M:Yes . And everything seems to have a stronger smell to me then.
W:I know , and people often say it’s going to rain when they have aches and pains in certain parts of their body . My mother always says that her knee hurts just before a storm .
M:Yeah , but with all these signs , how come we are n’t carrying an umbrella with us ?
