Course Overview
• • • Basic requirements for teaching: The integration of theory learning and case study is adopted in the classroom teaching. The teaching process is mainly focused on theocratic practicability, case discussion and etc. By taking this course, firstly students gain the knowledge of the basic theories of intercultural communication, then the student ‗s awareness of intercultural communication is trained, and students are required to integrate the theories with practice. By making comparison and contrast between Chinese culture and foreign ones, students may have a better understanding of foreign cultures and at the same time have a deep reflection of their own culture, which result in a further understanding of their native culture. Finally it helps to improve the student intercultural skills and the ability of inclusiveness and understanding of other cultures.

Edward T. Hall (1914-2009)
• Anthropologist Edward T. Hall received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1942 and did fieldwork on intercultural relations with the Navajo, Hopi, Spanish-Americans, and the Trukese. During the crucial years of the foreign aid program in the 1950s he was Director of the State Department‘s Point IV Training Program. From 1959 to 1963 he directed a communications research project at the Washington School of Psychiatry where he studied nonverbal communication. He taught at the University of Denver,. Bennington College, the Harvard Business School, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Northwestern University Dr. Hall was a Fellow of the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Applied Anthropology, and a member of the Building Research Advisory Board of the National Academy of Sciences. Best known for his work in intercultural relations and communication, he consulted with businesses and government agencies.

• The course of ―Study of Intercultural Communication‖ is designed to be one of the elective courses for graduate students (undergraduate international students) whose fields are either in Foreign Languages or Business English and etc. Purposes of the course: Theories in the field of Intercultural Communication are adopted to discuss and analyze cases regarding intercultural communication in order to help students to understand the theories and its application better, to improve the student abilities of analyzing and solving problems and upgrade their communicative skills in the context of intercultural communication. Meanwhile,the students could have a better understanding of their own native cultures.
