第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A
In some large American city schools, as many as 20 to 40 percent of the students are absent each day. There are two major reasons for such absences: one is sickness, and the other is truancy, that is, staying away from school without permission. Since school officials can’t do much about illness, they are concentrating on reducing the number of truants. One of the most promising ways has been tried in Florida. The pupils there with good attendance have been given free hamburgers, toys and T-shirts. Classes are told that if they show improved rates of attendance, they can win additional gifts. At the same time, teachers are being encouraged to inspire their students to come
to school regularly. When those teachers are successful, they are also rewarded. “We have been punishing truants for years, but that ha sn’t brought them back to school”, one school principal(校长)said. “Now we are trying the positive approach, not only do you learn by showing up everyday, but you earn.” In San Francisco, the board of education has had a somewhat similar idea. Schools that show a decrease in deliberate(故意)destruction of property can receive the amount of money that would’ve been spent on repairs and replacements. For example, 12,000 dollars had been set aside for a school’s property damages every year. Since repair expenses of damaged property required only 4,000 dollars, the remaining 8,000 dollars was turned over to the student activities fund. “Our democracy(民主)operates on hope and encouragement”, said a school board member. Why not provide some positive goals for students and teachers to enact?

In a country that defines itself by ideals, not by shared blood, who should be allowed to come, work and live here? In the wake of the Sept.11 attacks these questions have never seemed more pressing.
On December. 11, 2001, as part of the effort to increase homeland security, federal and local governments in 14 states staged “Operation Safe Travel” — raids(突然搜捕)on airports to arrest employees with false identification(身份证明). In Salt Lake City there were 69 arrests. But those people were not terrorists, most of them are illegal immigrants from Central or South America. Governments said the workers’ illegal status made them open to blackmail(讹诈))by terrorists. Many immigrants in Salt Lake City were angered by the arrests and said they felt as if they were being treated like disposable(任意的)goods.
I think those feelings are justified to a certain extent. We’re saying we want you to work in these places, we’re going to look the other way in terms of what our laws are, and then when it’s convenient for us, or when we can try to make a point in terms of national security, especially after Sept.11, then you’re disp osable. There are whole families being destroyed for all of the wrong reasons.
If Sept.11 had never happened, the airport workers would not have been arrested and could have gone on quietly living in America. Ana Castro, a manager at a Ben & Jerry’s ice cr eam shop at the airport, had been working 10 years with the same false Social Security card when she was arrested in the airport in December raid. Now she and her family are living under the threat of deportation(驱逐出境). Castro’s case is waiting to be settl ed. While she waits for the result, the government has granted her permission to work here and she has returned to her job at Ben & Jerry’s.
64. According to the author, the United States claims to be a nation ____________.
A. made up of people having different values
B. encouraging individual dreams
C. sharing common interests
D. founded on shared ideals
65. How did the immigrants in Salt Lake City feel about “Operation Safe Travel”?
A. Guilty.
B. Offended.
C. Disappointed.
D. Discouraged.
66. Wo rkers with false identification became the target of “Operation Safe Travel” because
__________.
A. evidence was found that they were potential terrorists
B. most of them worked at airports under threat of terrorists
C. terrorists might take advantage of their illegal status
D. they were reportedly helping hide terrorists around the airport.
67. By saying “...we’re going to look the other way in terms of what our laws are” (Para.3) the
author means ________________.
A. we will turn a blind eye to your illegal status
B. we will examine the laws in a different way
C. there are other ways of carrying out the law
D. the existing laws must not be ignored
68. What do we learn about Ana Castro from the last paragraph?
A. she will be deported sooner or later.
B. She is allowed to stay in the USA for ever.
C. Her case has been dropped
D. Her fate remains uncertain.
D
Today, many developed countries are facing the highest possibility of obesity(肥胖), diseases and injury than ever before in recorded history. Even worse we are experiencing this ill health in spite of the fact that we have the greatest number of medical doctors using some of the most advanced medical technology than ever before. Knowing this, if there are things we can do for ourselves, we best get moving now!
There are a few factors that can be correlated with our declining health, but I am only going to address the point in this article: Lack of exercise!
While many of you could, and probably do, have many reasons why you don’t participate in a regular exercise program, none of you can honestly say that you don’t have time to walk! The human body is not only designed for daily movement, it is essential for satisfying physical function, which contributes to health and well-being. To demonstrate my point, consider the following benefits of walking:
Walking is one of the most main movement patterns known to man. Because walking was essential to our survival during our developmental years, our bodies have developed so that walking and movement are essential to health; as it has been said, form follows function.
Walking requires the use of our arms, legs, body and so on. Hundreds of calorie-burning muscles(肌肉)are exercised simply by walking. Walking actively on a daily basis not only results in calorie burning, it increases enzyme(酶)and metabolism(新陈代谢)that may result in increased calorie burning for up to 12 hours after walking as little as 2 miles. The more deconditioned you are, the greater the metabolic effect of walking.
Increased metabolism means more than simply burning calories, it means that your body will be more likely to draw in nutrients from your food and supplements. It also means that your desire to drink more water will increase, which will support all your body systems of elimination(排泄)and will improve digestion.
69. According to the passage, walking can NOT make _______.
A. your body burn more calories
B. your body take in more nutrients from food
C. your digestion be better
D. you feel tired for a very short time
70. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Greatest number of doctors and advanced medical technology don’t always mean health.
B. Many parts of our body are exercised when we walk.
C. Walking is the most effective way to increase metabolism.
D. A person may not say he doesn’t have time to walk as a excuse.
71. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. High risk of diseases
B. Lack of exercise
C. Do more exercise
D. The power of walking
72. Which of the following can we infer about the author?
A. He does little exercises in his spare time.
B. He may be a person in a developed country.
C. He often falls ill.
D. He often complaints he doesn’t have time to do exercises.
第二节:阅读文章后,根据各小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。

本节共三个小题,每小题2分,满分6分。

Stem cells (干细胞), genetic engineering and therapeutic (治疗) cloning are being used in the relatively new field of anti-ageing medicine.
Goldman said a calendar with pictures of actress Sophia Loren at the age of 71 wearing only a pair of earrings showed how opinion of age had changed. “If somebody told you 14 years ago that they were going to have a former sex symbol pose in earrings only, you would not have accepted it or you would have closed your eyes,” he said. “Today she looks great at the age of 71.”
Stem cell therapy will allow people to regain lost hair, remove wrinkles by renewing skins, and grow new nerves for patients who can’t move, Michael Klentze, director of the Klentze Institute of Anti-aging in Munich, Germany, said.
Stem cells have the ability to act as a repair system for the body, because they can divide, copying other cells as long as the host organism is alive.
“T hey can hope in the next months they’ve got new hair, not strange hair, but their own hair,” he said. He said a new treatment called proteomic diagnostics could detect prostate(前列腺) cancer through a urine (尿) test years before regular scans discovered it.
“We can stop the progress of a prostate cancer and we don’t need a biopsy (活组织检查) or anything else. No operation, no nothing.”
He said people had different risk factors depending on gene mutations (变异) passed from their ancestors and if these factors were identified and measured correctly, people could expect to live longer and healthier lives. “If you measure these very exactly, then you know very early you should change you r lifestyle. But it is very important not to start this when you’re 85 years, but start at 40 or 45,” he said.
73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “therapy”.
74. What will happen if stem cell treatment is used in medicine? (回答词数不超过8个)
75. What is the best time to change your lifestyle? (回答词数不超过6个)

American scientists say rising temperatures on e arth’s surface are forcing animals and plants to move to cooler areas and make other changes. Their studies found that warmer weather is causing many kinds of wildlife to leave their native environments. They also found that such natural events as tree flowering and long-distance travel by birds are now happening earlier in the year. Nature magazine reported the findings.
The scientists say the result of these changes could be environmental damage and local losses of wildlife. They also warn that some creatures could disappear completely.
Plants and animals have always had to react to changing environments. However, the climate is now changing faster than ever before. Many scientists blame heat-trapping industrial gases for the warmer weather.
Camille Parmesan is a biologist at the University of Texas at Austin. She organized one of the studies with economist Gary Yohe of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. They
examined other studies that followed the movements of about one-thousand-seven-hundred kinds of wildlife over many years. They used mathematical programs to make sure that only the best information was studied.
Their most detailed effort involved ninety-nine kinds of birds, insects and plants in North America and Europe. They found that the area where these plants and animals live has moved north by an average of six kilometers every ten years. In Europe, some butterflies now live as much as one-hundred kilometers to the north because of changes linked to higher temperatures.
Professors Parmesan and Yohe used similar methods to examine one-hundred-seventy-two kinds of wildlife. They examined the timing of events in spring, such as the appearance of flowers and the reproduction (繁殖) of animals. They found that these events happened an average of two days earlier than normal every ten years.

Composition:
Chinese socialist new rural construction has brought Chinese countryside many changes. The following four aspects are especially typical. Firstly, farmers grow grain more actively than before because agriculture tax has been canceled. Secondly, farmers’ children can all share compulsory education for 9 years, so they pay little money for their primary and junior middle school. What is more, when they are ill, they do not need to spend much money seeing a doctor because of the new rural cooperate medical care system. And at last, many goods and materials from which farmers can get really benefit are having been transported to the countryside to help with rural construction.
Such are some changes in Chinese countryside. I think with the right lead of the party, they will live a happier, richer and more colorful life.。
