21.(6分)“WHAT IS CIVILIZATION?” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ago i n the seminal BBC series on the subject. “I don’t know, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recognize it when I see it, and I’m looking at it now.” And he turned to gesture behind him, at the soaring Gothic towers and flying but tresses of Notre Dame.
It seems inhuman to care more about a building than about people. That the sight of Notre Dame going up in flames has attracted so much more attention than floods in southern Africa which killed over 1,000 arouses understandable feel ings of guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight of the cathedral’s collapsing steeple is in fact profoundly human—and in a particularly 21st-century way.
It is not just the economy that is global today, it is culture too. People wander the world in search not just of jobs and security but also of beauty and history. Familiarity breeds affection. A building on whose sunny steps you have rested, in front of which you have taken a selfie with your loved one, becomes a warm part of your memories and thus of yourself. That helps explain why China is in mourning—WeChat, young China’s principal means of talking to itself, has been throbbing with the story, and Xi Jinping, the country’s president, sent a message of condolence to Emmanuel Macron, his French counterpart—while India was largely indifferent. Tourism from India to the West is a trickle compared with the flood from China.
This visual age has endowed beauty with new power, and social media have turned great works of art into superstars. Only a few, though, have achieved this status. Just as there is only ever a handful of world-famous actors, so the pantheon of globally recognizable cultural symbols is tiny: the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid—and Notre Dame. Disaster, too, is visual. In the 24 hours after the fire started videos on social media of the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter of a billion times.
Yet the emotions the sight aroused were less about the building itself than about what losing it might mean. Notre Dame is an expression of humanity at its collective best. Nobody could look up into that vaulted ceiling without wondering at the cumulative genius of the thousands of anonymous craftsmen who, over a century and a half, realized a vision so grand in its structural ambition and so delicate in its hand-chiselled detail. Its survival through 850 years of political turbulence—through war, revolution and Nazi occupation—binds the present to the past.
The fire also binds people to each other. The outpouring of emotion it has brought forth is proof that, despite the dark forces of division now abroad, we are all in it together. When nationalism is a rising threat, shared sadness makes borders suddenly irrelevant. When politics is polarized, a love of culture has the power to unite. When extremism divides Muslim from Christian and religious people from atheists, those of all faiths and none are mourning together. An edifice built for the glory of God also represents the unity of the human spirit.
And it will be rebuilt. The morning after the fire, the many Parisians who went to the cathedral to mourn its destruction found comfort instead. Although the spire is gone, the towers are still standing and it seems likely that the whole building can be re vived. The effort to rebuild it, like the fire, will bring people together. Within 24 hours, €600m ($677m) had been raised from businesses and rich people, and a rash of crowdfunding campaigns started. A
high-resolution laser scan of the building, carried out recently, should help.
It will never be the same, but that is as it should be. As Victor Hugo wrote in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, a three-volume love-letter to the cathedral: “Great edifices, like great mountains, are the work of centuries. Art is often transformed as it is being made…Time is the architect, the nation is the builder.”
1、What’s the writer’s attitude towards the fact that people care more about a building than floods in Africa? A.indifferent B.critical
C.confused D.understandable
2、Th e underlined word “condolence” in Paragraph 3 means __________.
A.sympathy B.compliment
C.gratitude D.agreement
3、Why was India largely indifferent to the big fire of Notre Dame?
A.Because Indians care more about jobs and security.
B.Because Indians have no access to social media like WeChat.
C.Because Indians have less familiarity with Notre Dame.
D.Because Indians are not fond of travelling.
4、What can we infer from Paragraph 5 and 6?
A.People are more sad about losing the building than about what losing it might mean.
B.Not only does Notre Dame bind the present to the past but also binds people to each other.
C.Owing to the big fire, people around the world will unite forever despite their differences.
D.Unrest existed in history for quite a long time and it still exists now.
5、By saying “it will never be the same”, the writer means that __________.
A.the high-resolution laser scan of the building helps but far from enough
B.it’s impossible to replicate (复制) it for lack of the cumulative genius of craftsmen
C.dark forces, nationalism and extremism are barriers to replicating it
D.time has changed and the rebuilding will change accordingly
6、What might be the best title of the passage?
A.What is civilization? B.Why do people care about Notre Dame?
C.What binds people together? D.How should we rebuild Notre Dame?
22.(8分)Google, one of the world’s outstanding tech companies, was attacked. It wasn’t its search engine that was attacked or its advertising platform or even its social network. Google+. Instead, it was a building.
Two web security experts hacked (侵入) into its Wharf 7 office in Sydney, Australia, through Google’s building management system (BMS). One of them, Billy Rios, says, “My colleague and I have lot of experience in web security, but it is not so mething that people couldn’t learn. Once you understand how the system works, it is very simple.”
They found the system on Shodan, a search engine that lists devices connected to the Internet, and then ran it through their own software to identify who owned the building. In the case of the Google hacking, the researchers had no immoral purpose and just informed Google about what they found.
According to Mr Rios, who runs security company Whitescope, there are 50, 000 buildings currently connected to the Internet, including research institutes, churches and hospitals, and 2, 000 of those are online with password protection, Martyn Thomas, a professor of IT at Gresham College in the UK, says, “It is beyond doubt that attempts to attack building management syst ems are happening all the time.”
Making a building smart generally means connecting the systems that control heating, lighting and security to the Internet and the wider corporate network. There was a strong reason for doing this, said Andrew Kelly, principal security consultant at defence company Qinetiq.
“Energy savings are the biggest factor in connecting building management systems to the corporate network,” he says. “It gives those who run the building better control and offers between 20% to 50% in energy savings,” he adds.
But it also makes them less secure. And if any of these feels like a Hollywood film, think again.
1、How did Billy Rios and his colleague hack Google’s building?
A.They invented a search engine and connected it to Google’s building.
B.They worked for Google and mastered how the building worked.
C.They used Google’s BMS to find out the owner of the building,
D.They connected their own software to the building to run Google.
2、In the case of the Google hacking, the researchers had the intention of ________.
A.analyzing some immoral problems
B.explaining the reasons for energy savings
C.entering Google’s building to save more energy
D.telling Google about the Wharf 7 office’s hidden danger
3、What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.The building management systems of some buildings are in danger.
B.There are many researchers contributing a lot to web security.
C.The attack on building management systems happens all over the world.
D.There are too many buildings connected to the Internet to be managed well.
4、What is the author’s attitude towards the way of the energy savings of some buildings?
A.Ambiguous. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Favorable.
23.(8分)The world’s population is projected to reach 11 billion by the end of the century.
Feeding that many people will be a challenge, and it is further complicated by the impact of climate change on agriculture. That is why some people advocate an unusual way to boost the food supply and feed people sustainably by eating less meat and more insects.
About 2 billion people already eat bugs. Mexicans enjoy chilly-toasted grasshoppers. Thais tuck into cricket
stir-fries and Ghanaians snack on termites. Insects are slowly creeping on to Western menus as novelty items, but most people remain squcamish(拘谨).
Yet there are three reasons why eating insects makes sense.
First, they are healthier than meat. There are nearly 2000 kinds of edible insects, many of them packed with protein, calcium, fiber, iron and zinc. A small serving of grasshoppers can contain about the same amount of protein as a similar sized serving of beef, but has far less fat and far fewer calories.
Second, raising insects is cheap, or free. Little technology or investment is needed to produce them. Harvesting insects could provide li velihoods to some of the world’s poorest people.
Finally, insects are a far more sustainable source of food than livestock. Livestock production accounts for nearly a fifth of all greenhouse-gas emissions, that’s more than transport. By contrast, insects p roduce relatively few greenhouse gases and raising them requires much less land and water. And they eat almost anything.
Despite all this, most Westerners find insects hard to swallow.
One solution is to use protein extracted from bugs in other products such as ready meals and pasta sauces. Not having to look at the bugs and emphasizing the environmental benefits might make the idea of eating insects a bit more palatable.
1、What is the direct reason why some people advocate eating insects?
A.Insufficient food supply B.Climate change
C.The rapid increase of population D.Insects’ high nutrition
2、From the passage, we can infer that .
A.eating insects is healthier than eating beef
B.eating insects is popular among westerners
C.eating insects can help people lose weight
D.eating insects causes less damage to the environment
3、How can we make it more acceptable to eat insects?
A.By closing your eyes when eating insects
B.By eating insects together with other food
C.By putting insects’ nutrients into other food products
D.By considering the environmental benefits of eating insects
24.(8分)I attended a writer’s group to get feedback on my book. But there were so many people there that the discussion was limited. After getting home, my 13-year-old son asked me to read one chapter to him. So I read the chapter about spending my pocket money as a nine-year-old child.
The story took place at a lunch counter, where I dreamed of ordering a banana split. Colorful balloons were hung above the counter and a sign sa id “Pop a balloon and pay 1 cent to 63 cents for a banana split!” As I was given only 50 cents for cleaning the doghouse, I didn’t dare to ask my parents for any more pocket money without doing more work or risk asking anyone else. So I kept my wish to myself.
Frankie listened carefully, as I read the final sentences of the chapter, “I watched as others selected a balloon to pop and dreamed about the opportunity to take my chance. But it never happened.”
The next morning, Frankie led me to the kitchen. I co uldn’t believe my eyes. The table was covered in a pile of balloons. Frankie handed me 50 cents and a fork. “Pop one!” he urged. With tears in my eyes, I broke one. A piece of paper fell out of the balloon.
“What does it say?” Frankie asked. “Fifty cents,” I whispered, too moved to speak loudly. Frankie asked, “Well, do you have 50 cents?” I handed him the money. “OK!” Then Frankie pulled out a banana split from the refrigerator.
I hugged Frankie hard. We took turns popping the other balloons until I finally got the 1-cent balloon. It was a long-time coming, but worth the wait.
It hit me that the first step in making any wish come true is giving it a voice.
1、The author read the chapter to Frankie because .
A.she wanted to get feedback from Frankie
B.Frankie asked the author to read it to him
C.she was used to telling a bedtime story to him
D.Frankie had a strong desire for knowledge
2、What can we infer about the author from the second paragraph?
A.She spent money wisely when she was a kid.
B.She had enough money to do whatever she liked.
C.She earned her pocket money by doing housework.
D.She had no close friends to share her secret wish.
3、Seeing what Frankie did for her, the author felt .
A.comfortable and happy B.puzzled and excited
C.awkward and satisfied D.surprised and grateful
4、The author learned that .
A.it is important to express one’s wishes
B.it is comforting to have a kid around
C.experiences in childhood affect us later in life
D.wishes can come true by just voicing them

Only one couple had a chance to win, and they were a good several yards behind us.
A few feet from the finish line, disaster struck: I tripped and fell. We were 44 enough that my partner could have easily dragged me across the finish line and won. But he didn’t. Instead he stopped, 45 down and helped me up —just at the other couple crossed the finish line. As a result, we received a small red ribbon for coming in second.
I still remember that moment when the young boy decided that helping a friend get on her feet was more important than winning a blue ribbon. And 13 years later, I still have that little ribb on because it’s a 46 that a friend like this boy is one who really 47 .

Reading is good for babies in developing their intelligence and interest. Mom would read to me if I was a baby, that developed my love for reading. As I grew elder and could read by myself, my father often takes me to book-stores and left me there reading.
On my birthdays, the gifts sending by my parents are always books. It is them who let me know benefits of reading.
Personally, I feel strong that reading does us lots of goods. It can broaden our horizons and make us more intelligent. Additionally, it is helpful in our learning, especially in writing about good compositions.
So let's start reading now.
