An Indian barber has come up with an unusual technique to give people
haircuts using just a burning candle。

Dasharath Kumar, 28, is now the most demanded barber in his small village in Gulbarga in Karnataka in southern India, with the crazy way of styling people’s hair with a small comb and burning candle instead of a pair of scissors。

Just as any barber would cut hair using scissors,Dasharath combs the hair and carefully runs the flame of the candle on the ends, giving it a unique finish。

Once done, he washes the hair and deep conditions it to let the sharp smell go off. The “cutting—edge” technique has become so popular among men in his village and nearby towns that his salon is always full of customers – both young and old alike. Started with only 20 pence, customers now happily pay him ξ1 for his way of haircut。

While Dasharath had joined his family business when he was 15,the unique idea only clicked him five years ago after power went off at work one day. He says: “Electricity cut was common in our village and we were used to working in dark. But one evening while I was cutting the hair of a customer, power went off and I had to use the light from a candle to finish the haircut. But the flames of the candle that night inspired me to think of using a new technique for cutting hair."
“I had a bunch of regular customers so when I told them about the experiment, they readily agreed。

They happily said they trusted me and my skills and gave a nod for the new technique。

Surprisingly,it came out very well. Since then there is no looking back.”

When Jane Austen (1775—1817)wrote her novels in England, she was writing about a world that most of us would not recognize. But today Austen’s books are in greater demand than ever。

In the last ten years, five of her six novels have been made into Hollywood films, while her books continue to be bestsellers.
Richard Jenkyns,a professor of English at Oxford University, argues that her novels still appeal to people because they focus on issues(话题) that are as relevant today as they were when she wrote them. Her novels are about women tring to find a perfect husband, but also explore issues surrounding marriage, friendship and the family. “The plots are fairly
timeless stories about human interaction(互动)which are familiar to us," Jenkyns says.
The most famous book Austen wrote is Pride and Prejudice,a love story between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy。

At first the two characters do not get on。

They eventually fall in love, but still have to overcome opposition to their relationship from their families.
All if Austen's books are easy to read, making them popular with children and adults, but they work on different levels so people can take what they need from them, author Kate Henry says。

“You can choose to see the politics and feminism(男女平等)in them, but if you don’t want to take on those issues you can turn a blind eye to them,” she says.
Austen is remembered as the greatest romance writer in the English language,so it is surprising that she remained unmarried。

“Maybe she was too much of a romantic, waiting for the perfect man,” Henry says.
24. According to Richard Jenkyns,Jane Austen's books sell best because .

Bamboo is one of the world’s most useful plants。

For thousands of years bamboo has been used in many different ways – from food to medicine to clothing and,in small ways, as a building material. However, bamboo is not often used as a building material in the developed world。

Kent Harries,a professor at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, is trying to change that.
The professor and his students are testing the strength of bamboo。

They are testing its radial load, or how much pressure or weight it can take before breaking. That pressure was too much。

Building codes(规范)everywhere require strict standardization of tests for all materials, such as wood or concrete. But tests for bamboo have not been standardized。

Harries says that testing methods for bamboo need to be the same for all。

They need to be standardized。

“If we standardize it and provide test methods which the engineers can hang their hat on,we will bring the material into the mainstream.” Harries adds。

Harries sees bamboo as a great building material. First,it is strong. The strength of at least three pieces of bamboo is similar to steel。

Besides its strength,Harries says that bamboo has other characteristics that make it a great building material. He says it keeps its shape and strength even under pressure。

Bamboo also grows quickly. Bamboo that is suitable for construction needs much less resources than wood。

Because of the favorable relationship between load—bearing capacity (性能)and weight, bamboo can be used for the construction of scaffoldings(脚手架)even for very tall buildings。

So, should we expect to be living in bamboo houses in the near future? Perhaps a little ambitious, however, the facts do seem to speak for themselves and strongly suggest that bamboo will continue to gain its popularity。

27. Why do Harries and his students test the strength of bamboo?
A。

To change people's idea about growing bamboo.
B. To advocate the concept of using green building materials。

C. To see if bamboo can be widely used as a building material。

D。

To find out how bamboo breaks under great pressure.
28. The difficulty of bringing bamboo into the mainstream of building materials is that .
A。

there is a lack of standardization of tests for bamboo
B。

tests for all building materials differ greatly in standard
C。

the engineers have doubts about Harries' testing methods
D. Harries doesn’t follow building codes in tests for bamboo
29。

According to Harries, what qualities make bamboo a great building material?
A。

Bamboo is pretty and productive. B。

Bamboo is tall and thin。

C. Bamboo is round and smooth。

D。

Bamboo is strong and flexible。

30. What is the author’s attitude towards bamboo houses?
A. Doubtful. B。

Positive. C. Cautious. D。

Disapproving。

第四部分:写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节:应用文写作(满分15分)
假定你是李华.你校将接待一批来自英国的交换生(exchange student),现正在征寻合适的接待家庭。

1.介绍自己的基本情况(姓名、性格、英语水平等);
2.说明能提供接待的家庭条件。

2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。

第二节:概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

The loudest public food fight righe now is about GMOs(转基因生物), or genetically modified organisms. Although GMOs have been in our food supply for 20 years, the argument has moved to center stage. Recent documentaries and experts have fanned the flames。

About 75 percent of consumers say they are concerned about the safety of genetically modified foods, according to New York Times survey. The European Union already requires labeling(标识), and several countries, including France, have banned the planting of genetically modified crops。

So are GMOs safe –or should you avoid them at all costs? Here,a look at the evidence.
In a big red-flag—raising study,French researchers reported last year that rats developed huge tumors(肿瘤)after living on genetically modified corn for two years. “Genetic engineering can have accidental
consequences,” says Bill Freese,a science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety. Artificial genes force plants to produce unnatural proteins (蛋白质),he says, and no one knows how those may affect human health。

But scientists immediately criticized(批评)the French study。

For one thing, the types of rats used in the study were very likely to develop cancer, so it was predictable that some would develop tumors after eating GMOs, notes Nina Fedoroff, a professor of biology and life sciences at Penn State University. She adds,“We've eaten these foods for 20 years and aren’t walking around with giant tumors。

The editors of Scientific American criticized the efforts to label GMO foods, stating that there’s no evidence that GMOs can endanger people’s health. So the fact that scientists can now insert single genes into corn or soybeans shouldn’t raise any new alarms, says Fedoroff。

There doesn’t appear to be a scientific reason to ban GMO foods from your cupboard to protect your health。

But it is healthy to limit your intake of the processed foods that often contain them. And don't assume that GMO-free packaged good is necessarily healthy。

Organic cookies can still contain too much sugar or salt。
