Group interview
--It’s you, interviewing in a group with 4-7 people, and it’s really
just a group of you and other people interviewing for the same
exact job.
【example】Donate money to a charity. Which charity should we choose?
--There is no clear leader, and it’s really up to you to stand up and
say something.
--The type of question is usually very open-ended.
-- They want to hear you arguments, talk, use logic and work
together with the other people in the room.
Stand out in your group interviews
•Be confident
--we should…
--Don’t want to be too confident or appear like you dominanting the group.
--You are willing to hear out other people’s ideas in addition to speaking your own mind.
•Speak out your opinions
--There is no leader. You had to prove yourself.
•Thinking and talking
--Think before you talk.
--Don’t say things for no reason. Have a purpose for what you say.
•Be persuasive
--Use your personality to persuade others to agree with you.
•Be friendly to your partners
•Take notes
--It shows you are paying attention to them.
•Review & comment on others’ words
•Hand in your outline about the discussion
--Everything you write down should be positive.
【questions】
1 When you enter the group interview, there is no leader, so does someone stand up and choose a leader, or do you elect a leader, how does that work?
--Find a way to start talking. Silence is bad.
--It’s great if you are willing to step up and say the first thing.
--Serve yourself and try to be a leader.
2 During your group interview, can you get the people in the back of
the room, the people that are observing you, involved in the
discussion.
--That really depends on whether they want to be involved.
3 At the end of the group interview, should we come to an agreement?
--You should come to an agreement. It’s not good if you aren’t able to work together
--In the interest of teamwork and showing that you are cooperative, someone should compromise.
4 Does the team leader have much more advantages over the others?
--They do have more advantages.
--But if you lead it in a bad direction, it may be bad. But it deserves to risk.
5 Have you ever been a leader during a group interview?
6 Would the leader be the one that finished the communication?
--That is not definite.
7 The one who draws the conclusion will get more attention from the interviewer?
--As long as your conclusion is a good summary of what was said. Condensing and summarizing well, that is great.
8 If one of the people in the group has a different opinion, and I have difficulties to persuade him to the majority view, what I should do?
--I hear what you say and I understand your argument but my point is…
--It’s not your responsibility to make sure that everyone agrees.
Brain teasers force you to be creative with your thinking
[Examples]
--Why are manhole covers round?
1A circle is the only shape that cannot fall in on itself
2Manhole covers are heavy so being able to roll them makes them easier to move
3You don’t have to rotate the cover to make sure it fits over the hole
•Most brainteasers have a ‘twist’which forces you to think
about the problem in a unique way
--Talk through your logic so your interviewer can see your thought process
[Examples]
--There are two rooms, one has three light bulbs, the other room has three light switches,
how can you figure out which light bulb goes with which switch? If you can enter the
room with the switches only once?
1 Turn on one light for 5minutes, turn it off.
2 Turn on the second light switch, when you go back the other room, you can feel the light
bulb that’s hot, and that is the first one, the one that is on is the one you just turned on.
--Sometimes it happens that you get a brainteaser, but you have no
idea what to do, but what they want to see is your trying and
thinking of things.
--It’s not good to say I don’t know or I have no idea.
--Keep talking and say things that are relevant
.
Market sizing
Market sizing questions are intended to test your ability to use
logic to come to a reasonable estimate
[Example]
How many gas stations are there in Beijing?
•Don’t focus on getting the perfect answer
–The purpose of these questions is to see how you think
through difficult problems
–Use round numbers to make the math easier
•Talk your interviewer through your logic for each estimate
–Keep your interviewer engaged by speaking to him and
asking his opinion so that the interviewer won’t feel too bored.
–15,000,000 people in Beijing
–10% have cars
–Fill gas once every 5 days
–300,000 cars need gas each day
– A gas station is open 15 hours per day
–Each gas station has 4 pumps
–One pump can serve 10 cars per hour
–Thus, 600 cars per day per gas station
–300,000 / 600 = 500 gas stations
--Check out your answer based on what you do know.。
