Avi Loeb, a scientist, believes that we are not alone in the universe. The belief fits withLoeb's alien spaceship theory that at least one alien spaceship might be flying over the orbit of Jupiter, which won the international attention last year.
Astronomers inHawaiifound the first known interstellar object in late 2017. It was a bit of light moving so fast past the sun that it could only have come from another star. Almost every astronomer on the planet was trying to figure out how the object, called “Oumuamua” got to our far-away part of the Milky way galaxy. “One possibility is that ‘Oumuamua’ is debris from an advanced technological equipment,” Loeb said. “Technology comes from another solar system just showed up at our door. ”
“‘Oumuamua’ is not an alien spaceship,” Paul Sutter, another scientist wrote. He suggested Loeb was seeking publicity. Most scientists think “Oumuamua” is some sort of rock. They think it could be an icy wandering comet.
Loeb says that “Oumuamua's” behavior means it can't be a block of rock shaped like a long photo. He thinks it's more likely an object that's very long and thin, perhaps like a long pancake or a ship's sail. Loeb says that if someone shows him evidence thatcontradictshis beliefs, he will immediately give in.
Loeb believes himself a truth-teller and risk-taker in an age of very safe, too-quiet scientists. “The worst thing that can happen to me is that I would be relieved of my management duties, and that would give me even more time to focus on science,” Loeb says. He said he wouldn't mind giving up all the titles he had and returning to the Israeli farming village where he grew up.
4. What does Loeb say about “Oumuamua”?
A. It is an icy comet.
B. It looks like a long photo.
C. It is actually some sort of rock.
D. It may come from another alien civilization.
5. What does the underlined word “contradicts” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Goes against.
B. Relies on.
C. Turns to.
D. Searches for.
6. What do you think of Loeb?
A. He is foolish.
B. He is unsatisfied with his titles.
C. He is a firm believer in scientific truth.
D. He is uncertain about his career future.
7. What's the best title for the text?
A. Have Aliens Paid a Visit in Spaceships?
B. Do We Really Know about Space Theory?
C. Scientists Are Working on High Technology
D. Astronomers Are Encouraging Space Travel

Watching what you eat can be easier said than done, but a recent study shows it might not just be about what's on your plate — it could be about how quickly it disappears.
Japanese researchers followed 1,083 adultsfor five years, splitting them into three categories based on how quickly they ate: slow, normal, and fast. They also answered a questionnaire at the beginning of the study, sharing their diet, physical activity, and medical history. In the beginning, none of the volunteers had metabolic syndrome (新陈代谢综合征) - meaning at least three risk factors — which can lead to health problems like heart conditions and diabetes.
When the participants reported back five years later 84 had been diagnosed (诊断) with metabolic syndrome — and their eating speed was a major predictor, according to the results in the journal Circulation. The fast eaters were 89 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome than slow and normal eaters. Just 2.3 percent of slow eaters received the diagnosis, compared to 11.6 percent of fast eaters. But that's not all. Fast eaters also saw more weight gain, larger waistlines, and higher blood sugar levels than slow eaters.
The researchers saygobblingmakes it easier not to take notice of fullness before your body has a chance to signal you to stop. “So when people eat fast they are more likely to overeat,” said Takayuki Yamaji, MD, study author and cardiologist at Hiroshima University in Japan in a statement.
Previous research backs up the weight benefits of slow eating, too. One study of New Zealand women found fast eaters have higher body-mass indexes (指数), and a Chinese study found that both healthy and fat men ate less when told to chew 40 times instead of 15 times before swallowing. Initial research even suggests chewing your food longer could bum more calories - up to about 1,000 extra every month.
8. What are the participants divided by?
A. Medical history.
B. Health condition.
C. Physical activity.
D. Eating speed.
9. Which may be the result of the study?
A. Fast eaters are 4 times more likely to have metabolic syndrome.
B. Normal and slow eaters don’t have metabolic illness.
C. 89% of fast eaters have higher blood pressure.
D. Slow caters are healthier than fast eaters.
10. What does the underlined word “gobbling” in Paragraph 4 best mean?
A. Tasting slowly.
B. Digesting quickly.
C. Eating greedily.
D. Cooking carefully.
11. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. The importance of eating speed.
B. The advantage of eating slowly.
C. The result of a Chinese study.
D. Fast eating and overeating.
D
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has lost 50% of its corals (珊瑚) within 30 years, with climate change a key driver of reef disturbance, a new study has found.
Researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, inQueensland, northeasternAustralia, studied coral communities and theirsize along the length of theGreat Barrier Reefbetween 1995 and 2017, finding all coral populations disappear gradually, they said.
Reefs are important to the health of ocean ecosystems — without them, ecosystems break down and ocean life dies.
Coral population decreases happened in both shallow and deep water coral species, experts found, but branching and table-shaped corals — which provide habitats for fish — were worst affected by mass bleaching (漂白) events in 2016.
Warm ocean temperatures are the main reason of coral bleaching. Bleaching doesn’t kill coral immediately, but if temperatures remain high, eventually the coral will die, destroying a natural habitat for many species of ocean life.
“We used to think the Great Barrier Reef is protected by its huge size — but in fact our results show that even the world’s largest and ly well-protected reef system is increasingly destroyed and in decline,” Terry Hughes, an outstanding professor at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, said.
“There is no time to lose — we must sharply decrease greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible,” the reporter warned in the paper, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society journal.
12. What has mainly influenced the coral populations of theGreat Barrier Reef?
A. Destroyed habitats.
B. Climate change.
C. Lack of seafood.
D. Bleaching events.
13. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many species has been dying out slowly.
B. The size of reefs contributes to their protection.
C. Ocean ecosystems don’t develop without reefs.
D. Bleaching continually disturbs table-shaped corals.
14. What attitude does the reporter hold to the present situation of theGreat Barrier Reef?
A. Worried.
B. Angry.
C. Hopeful.
D. Surprised.
15. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Climate change damages theGreat Barrier Reef
B. The Species of ocean Life Are In Danger
C. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Get Worse
D. Sea Ecosystems Are In Decline

选项中有两项为多余选项Most people admit extreme nervousness at even the thought of giving a speech._______16_______Through speaking, we gain the power to share what we are thinking with others.
Actually, not only do most beginning speakers suffer anxiety at the thought of speaking in public, but even powerful speakers like Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D.Roosevelt were nervous before speaking._______17_______Some people tremble, sweat, and experience shortness of breath and increased heartbeat. As they go through their speech, they may be so preoccupied with themselves that they lose contact with the audience, jump back and forth from point to point, and on occasion forget what they have planned to say._______18_______And they still go on to deliver a strong speech. The secret is not to get rid of all of your feelings but to learn to channel and control your nervousness.
Very few people are so bothered by anxiety that they are unable to proceed with the speech._______19_______Why? Because you must be a little more aroused than usual to do your best. A bit of nervousness gets the adrenaline (肾上腺素) flowing-and that brings you to speaking readiness.
Many speakers worry that others will notice how nervous they are-and that makes them even more self-conscious and nervous. A young woman reported that she broke out at home before each speech. She was amazed when other students said to her, “You seem so calm when you speak.”_______20_______Once you realize that your audience does not perceive your nervousness to the degree that you imagine, you will remove one unnecessary source of anxiety.
The more experience you get in speaking, the better you become at coping with nervousness. As time goes on, you will come to find that having a group of people listening to you alone is a very satisfying experience.
A. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
B. In fact, it would be harmful if you were not nervous.
C. Try getting feedback from your listeners after a speech.
D. The difference in nervousness among people is a matter of degree.
E. Yet you must learn to cope with nervousness because speaking is important.
F. Others, however, may get butterflies in their stomachs and feel weak in the knees.
G. Perhaps the most important time for coping with nervousness is shortly before the speech.

At first glance she looked like any other old woman, plodding along in the snow ,alone, neglected, head bowed.
A young couple, smiling, taking, laughing, arms loaded with Christmas presents, took no notice of the old woman.
A mother with two small children hurried by, on their way to grandmother’s house. Like many others, they took no notice, either. If these people had noticed, they would have seen that the old woman wore no shoes. She walked bare foot in the ice and snow.
With both hands the old woman gathered her worn button-less overcoat at the collar to keep out the wind. She stopped and stood bent and bowed at the bus stop.A red and blue scarf covering her head, she waited for the downtown bus.
A gentleman carrying an Important looking briefcase waited near her,not too closely. After all,she could have something contagious (传染的). A teenage girl also waited for the bus,She glanced repeatedly at the old woman's feet, but said nothing.

"She must have sons or daughters," a lady in a fur coat suggested, “her children should be ashamed of themselves." She felt morally superior, because she took good care of her mother.
A man seated near the middle of the bus steadied the bag of gifts on her lap. "Don't we pay enough taxes to handle situations like this?" he said to a friend seated beside him.
“People have to learn to save their money," a well-dressed young college man added. “If that old woman had saved when she was young, she wouldn't be suffering now. It's her own fault."
And all these vain(虚荣的)people beamed with satisfaction that they had all given such deep analysis, totally ignoring the old woman who badly needed a pair of shoes immediately.
