If you have ever been rock climbing, you will know that it is not a very easy sport. In fact, you probably felt quite defeated when you first tried to do any serious climbing. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing are both extremely hard and require practice to get good at. It is one of the most physically and mentally difficult sports.
Believe it or not, climbing is said to be about 75% legs and only 25% arms. To climb efficiently and successfully, a person needs to have a wonderful technique. One of the major rules of rock climbing is to always have three points touching the wall, whether it is both feet and one hand, or one foot and both hands, as it is much easier to have your weight rest on three points than on two. Another important idea to grasp is that your arms in most cases will do the climbing; they only hold you into the wall so that your legs are actually pushing you upward. Also, the closer you are to the wall, the easier it is to climb.
Rock climbing may sound a bit too challenging for the everyday person, but it is really an amazing practice. Once you get into the sport, and learn how to position your body and you’re your weight, then you can begin to deal with some difficult problems. The great thing about rock climbing is that it is mentally challenging as well. You are constantly analyzing the way your body moves and how to do certain moves on the wall. For anyone who wants to get into shape, rock climbing is a fun and effective way to exercise muscles.

You know eating fruit and vegetables does good. But do you know it can also make you look good? People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found. Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them slightly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers' skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks. Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look more healthy and an extra 3.3 portions could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.
Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素),which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange,it was not known a small increase was perceptible(被觉察)to others—and was seen as appealing.
A camera measured changes to the skin's redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident in three weeks. Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin. There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)—which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red colour—and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach. Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多元酚),found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.
31. What do we know from the research?
A. If you take in a little more fruit and vegetables, you will obviously look more attractive in three weeks.
B. The researchers took the pictures of the 35 people in the research at different stages.
C. Increasing your intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day can greatly improve your health.
D. People who increased their intake of greens by 3.3 portions a day were found the most attractive after six weeks.
32. Which of the following is NOT the function of carotenoids?
A. They can protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays.
B. They can prevent heart disease and cancer.
C. They can prevent age-related diseases.
D. They can keep you in good health.
33. Which of the statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. We've already known eating extreme amounts of carrots can turn skin orange.
B. We knew in the past that eating a few more carrots could make us look appealing.
C. The research showed the improvement in skin is linked with the levels of carotenoids in it.
D. Among hundreds of carotenoids, lycopene is thought to have the most dramatic
34. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. skin's redness, yellowness and lightness make a person look more healthy and attractive
B. carotenoids have the same effect as lycopene
C. it is carotenoids that give tomatoes and red peppers their red colour
D. both beta-carotene and polyphenols affect skin colour by causing blood rush to the skin surface
35. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Eating fruit and vegetables does good.
B. Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids.
C. How to become attractive?
D. Eating fruit and vegetables makes you look good.

People who are taking aspirin regularly to thin their blood and are about to undergo coronary artery bypass surgery (冠状动脉旁路搭桥术) are usually to stop the aspirin a week before the operation –but they could be better off if they keep taking it.
Taking aspirin up to the day coronary artery bypass grafting (移植) is performed seems to speed lung function recovery afterwards, without increasing the risk of bleeding significantly, according to a report from Israel.
Release of a substance called thromboxane (血栓素) is associated with
lung injury after heart bypass grafting, Dr Rabin Gerrah at Assuta Medical Center in Tel Aviv and his colleagues explained in the medical journal Chest. Aspirin is believed to inhibit release of thromboxane, so Gerrah’s g roup theorized that the administration of aspirin until the day of the surgery could improve outcomes.
They therefore followed 14 patients who took 100 milligrams of aspirin daily until the day of the surgery and 18 who stopped taking aspirin at least 7 days before the surgery.
Those who continued with their aspirin had significantly lower thromboxane in fluid around the heart, better oxygen levels in their blood and spent less time on a ventilator(呼吸器) than the group who discontinued taking aspirin.
On the other hand, the need for blood transfusions was no different between the groups, indicating that bleeding complications were no worse with aspirin.
The researchers had excluded patients who had suffered a heart attack and those with heart failure because patients like these have a higher level of thrombaxane. “They will probably benefit even more than its inhibition.”
Based on their findings, Gerrah’s team recommends that aspirin therapy(治疗) not be discontinued before coronary artery bypass surgery.
55. From the passage we know that_______.
A. doctors usually get people who will have coronary artery bypass surgery to stop taking aspirin 7 days before the operation
B. aspirin is believed to increase release of thromboxane
C. taking aspirin up to the day coronary artery bypass grafting is performed seems to slow lung function recovery afterwards
D. patients suffering a heart attack have a lower level of thromboxane
56. The purpose of the passage is to introduce to us that _________.
A. aspirin can make for release of thromboxane
B. aspirin is useful for patients suffering a heart attack
C. different ways turn out to be the same result
D. aspirin may improve recovery after heart bypass
57. According to Dr Rabin Gerrah, patients who will have heart bypass surgery should _______.
A. stop taking aspirin before the surgery
B. take aspirin as much as they like until the day of the surgery
C. be allowed to take 100 milligrams of aspirin daily until the day of the surgery
D. take aspirin after the heart bypass operation
58. What does the underlined word “inhibit” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. to become larger or better than normal
B. to make something happen more slowly than normal
C. to cause to be nervous or embarrassed
D. to improve something in poor condition

“Try and see inside your mind, a wide open blue sky and a vast green plain far away. Breathe in as you circle your hands high above your head, then bend back a little. Breathe out as you circle your arms back down to your sides...”
