My Dream to Help Orphans
Hi! My name is Emma, and I'm 10 years old. I'm in the 5th grade at Oakwood Elementary School. Today, I want to share with you my big dream – to become a volunteer at the local orphanage, Sunshine Home for Children.
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always felt a special connection with kids who don't have parents or families to call their own. You see, my best friend Sarah lives at Sunshine Home. Her parents passed away in a car accident when she was just a baby. Whenever I visit Sarah there, my heart breaks for all the other children who have to grow up without the love and care of a mommy and daddy.
At school, we often have special guests come and talk to us about different topics. A few months ago, a lady from Sunshine Home came to our class to tell us about the orphanage and the amazing work they do. She explained how they provide a safe, nurturing environment for kids who have nowhere else to go. They make sure the children have food, clothing, shelter, and an education. But most importantly, they try to give them the love and support that every child deserves.
As I listened to the lady speak, I couldn't help but imagine how lonely and scared those kids must feel, especially the really little ones. They've already been through so much sadness and heartbreak in their young lives. That's when I decided that I wanted to do something to help brighten their days and put smiles on their faces.
After the presentation, I raised my hand and asked the lady if kids my age could volunteer at the orphanage. She said that they actually have a special program for young volunteers, and they would love to have me! I was over the moon with excitement!
I went home that day and begged my parents to let me sign up as a volunteer. At first, they weren't sure if I was ready for such a big responsibility. But after seeing how passionate I was about it, they agreed to let me try it out.
The next weekend, my parents took me to Sunshine Home to fill out the paperwork and go through the volunteer orientation. I was so nervous but also really eager to get started. The staff members were incredibly kind and welcoming. They explained that as a junior volunteer, I would be able to help out with various activities and tasks, like:
Reading books and telling stories to the younger kids
Playing games and doing arts and crafts projects with them
Helping to serve meals and snacks
Keeping the playrooms and common areas neat and tidy
Assisting with special events and celebrations
They also told me that the most important thing I could give the children was my time, attention, and affection. Just being there to listen to them, play with them, and show them that they are loved and cared for would mean the world to them.
I couldn't wait for my first volunteer shift! When the day finally came, I was a bundle of nerves and excitement all rolled into one. As soon as I stepped through the doors of Sunshine Home, I was greeted by the smiling faces of so many beautiful children. Their eyes shone with curiosity and hope, and in that moment, I knew that I had made the right decision.
Over the next few months, I volunteered at the orphanage every Saturday morning. It quickly became the highlight of my week. The kids were absolutely amazing – so full of life, energy, and resilience despite the challenges they had faced. They taught me so much about finding joy in the simplest of things and cherishing every moment.
One of my favorite things to do was read stories to the little ones. They would gather around me, their eyes wide with wonder as I brought the tales to life with different voices and sound effects. Seeing their happy, smiling faces as they got lost in the magical worlds of the books filled my heart with pure bliss.
I also loved playing games and doing crafts with the older kids. We would spend hours creating masterpieces out of pipe cleaners, pom-poms, and construction paper. Or we'd have epic battles of Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, or Go Fish. These kids had been through so much, yet they still managed to find so much delight and laughter in the simple pleasures of childhood.
As the months went by, I formed special bonds with many of the children. They started to look up to me as a friend, a mentor, and a trusted confidante. Whenever I walked through the doors, they would come running up to me, eager to share their latest stories, accomplishments, or struggles.
One little girl, named Lily, was particularly shy and withdrawn when I first met her. She had recently been brought to the orphanage after being found abandoned and alone. For weeks, she wouldn't speak to anyone or make eye contact. But slowly, through our time spent reading, coloring, and playing together, she began to open up. The first time she giggled at one of my
silly voices during storytime, I thought my heart might burst with joy.
Another boy, named Jack, had a hard time making friends because of his rambunctious behavior and short attention span. But when we played outside, running around and burning off that boundless energy, he was in his element. He would often seek me out during free time, eager to have me chase him around the playground or teach him new games.
These kids, each with their own unique stories and personalities, became like family to me. And in their own special ways, they taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, gratitude, and the power of love and kindness.
As I look back on my first year as a volunteer at Sunshine Home, I am filled with immense pride and a renewed sense of purpose. What started as a simple dream to help others has blossomed into a life-changing experience that has enriched me in ways I never could have imagined.
I have witnessed firsthand the incredible work that the staff and caregivers at the orphanage do day in and day out. They pour their hearts and souls into nurturing and supporting these children, providing them with the stability, guidance, and unconditional love that every child deserves.
And now, I feel honored to be a small part of that mission. By giving just a few hours of my time each week, I've been able to make a positive impact in the lives of these remarkable kids. I've learned that even the smallest acts of kindness and compassion can make a world of difference to someone in need.
But more than anything, I've realized that in trying to help others, I've ended up helping myself even more. The orphanage has become my second home, and the children there have become like family to me. They have taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, gratitude, and the power of love and kindness that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
