Einstein was not only the outstanding scientist of the 20th
century, but also a gifted and enthusiastic musician. He once said that
had he not been a scientist,he would have been a musician. "Life
without playing music is unthinkable for me," he said. "I live my
daydreams in music.I get most joy in life out of music."
Einstein's mother,Pauline, was a talented pianist who brought music to life in the family home.Einstein began to learn the violin at the age of 6.However,he worked hard until discovering the joys of Mozart's sonatas(奏鸣曲)at the age of 13.From that point on,although he had no further lessons, his violin remained his companion(伴侣).
When Einstein moved to Aarau in Switzerland in 1895 to complete his schooling,he seemed to have devoted a good deal of his time to music.Just before his 17th birthday Einstein played at a music examination in the school. The examiner reported that "a student called Einstein shone in a deeply felt performance of one of the Beethoven sonatas".In addition to his great skill in playing the violin,he also played the piano and,in particular, loved to improvise (即兴创作). In later life,Einstein's reputation as a physicist often led to invitations to perform at benefit concerts, which he generally accepted happily. At one such event,a critic — not knowing Einstein's real reputation as a physicist — wrote, "Einstein plays excellently. However, his
worldwide reputation is undeserved. There are many violinists who are just as good." Probably the summary of Einstein the violinist that comes nearest to the mark comes from his friend Janos Plesch, who wrote,"There are many musicians with much better skills, but none,I believe, who ever played with more sincerity or deeper feeling."
4.We learn from Paragraph 1 that Einstein ______ .
A. had a great love for music
B. enjoyed daydreaming in music
C. had stopped playing music for a while
D. preferred to be a musician rather than a scientist
5.After discovering the joys of Mozart's sonatas,Einstein ______ .
A. began to create his own music
B. spent a lot of time playing his violin
C. started learning the piano by himself
D. moved to Switzerland to learn the violin
6.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?______
A. Einstein did excellently in the examination.
B. Einstein's life in Aarau affected his musical taste.
C. Einstein's performance disappointed the examiner.
D. Einstein practiced the Beethoven sonatas for his birthday.
7.By mentioning the critic's words,the author probably wants to show ______ .
A. Einstein didn't live up to his reputation
B. Einstein was also an outstanding violinist
C. Einstein played better than professional violinists
D. Einstein wished there would be more benefit concerts

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level,we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us.Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity.Immigrants bring it wherever they go,and it is a symbol of pride for their
culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available,so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries.Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should embrace our heritage(传统)through our culture's food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food.It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.
8.What's the function of food mentioned in the article?______
A. To help motivate homesickness.
B. To show national identity.
C. To reflect a country's history.
D. To show a community's superiority.
9.What does the underlined "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?______
A. The specific traditional food.
B. The national culture.
C. A traditional expression of food.
D. The old-fashioned taste.
10.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant?______
A. To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B. To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C. To make the dishes popular among customers.
D. To present their own food culture in a new way.
11.What's the author's attitude towards different food cultures?______
A. Negative.
B. Balanced.
C. Unfair.
D. Unchangeable.

It is common for adults to use "baby talk" when interacting with babies. This way of speaking attempts to imitate the sounds babies make when they first try to talk. But is this form of
communication helpful to a child's development?
Several studies have suggested a clear link between parental language methods and a child's early language development.Studies showed that language learning in babies was improved when parents spoke more than a few simple words and used a wider vocabulary.Earlier research found that the style of speech used by parents to communicate with their baby could have an influence on language development.
One such speaking style is known as "parentese".Research has shown that babies react better to this kind of language in the first months of life.Generally, parentese involves adults speaking in a higher voice and at a slower speed. The language is simplified, while sentences are short and often repeated.Studies from the past 30 years have confirmed that babies spoken to in parentese developed larger vocabularies throughout the first three years of life.
A new study on the subject,a project of the University of Washington's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, examined whether parents can be effectively taught methods to improve their parentese skills.
Naj a Ferjan Ramírez, working in the Institute for Learning&Brain Sciences, said that the parents involved in the research were first shown the importance of language input for their baby's development.Parents were then given suggestions on how to use different parentese methods, and then rated on how well they used these methods with their child. She added that the new study is important because there are still a lot of parents with little knowledge about how to use parentese to help their child. This was one reason the researchers included parents from different cultural and economic groupings.
12.How do parents usually talk with their babies?______
A. By speaking in a funny style.
B. By copying babies' sounds.
C. By raising speaking speed.
D. By whispering in babies' ears.
13.What can we learn from the second paragraph?______
A. Babies' language skills are decided by talent.
B. Babies' language is improved by simple words.
C. Parental language style helps improve babies' behavior.
D. Parental language methods affect babies' language development.
14.Where can you find how parents were trained in parentese skills?______
A. In paragraph 2.
B. In paragraph 3.
C. In paragraph 4.
D. In paragraph 5.
15.What can be the best title for the text?______
A. Communicating with babies matters more
B. Parentese is a good way to practice language
C. The more parents help, the better babies learn
D. Speaking parentese helps with babies' language learning
