Two 5-year-
old girls, best friends, held hands in Tolson’s office at Van Ne
ss Elementary School in Washington, D.C., one saying she di dn’t feel well. Tolson, the school nurse, asked, “How long has your stomach been hurting?”“It just started,” she said.
The other one said her head hurt last night, too. Tolson knew she had a history of fevers, so she checked her temperature a nd asked her what she ate, whether she went to the bathroom , and whether her head still hurt. It could be that these two littl e girls that went to Tolson’s office were fine. Or maybe they h ad mental problems. And that is what school nurses have to j udge every day.
School nurses generally get very little training when it comes t o mental health. Mazyck said she herself was astounded whe n she was a school nurse. She saw upset, anxiety, sadness a nd students who didn’t even know what to do to calm themsel ves down. She never expected these. So Mazyck went back t o school for a graduate degree in counseling (咨
询) and now she focuses on getting nurses more training in m ental health.
Sharon Stephan, who co-
directs the National Center for School Mental Health at the Un iversity of Maryland, tells nurses there are two simple questio ns to ask themselves to see if a child needs help:
Is the student acting or behaving differently than he/she was b
efore?
Is the student somehow far outside the norm (标
准) of what you would expect?
The only time everyone pays attention is when there’s a trage dy(悲
剧), like a school shooting. However, we actually can catch th e students who might harm others and recognize the students who might want to kill themselves.
Mental health is ranked one of the top problems all school nur ses deal with, and school nurses need to be better at it.

Tips of Avoiding the Computer or Internet Addiction
The Internet has been widely used in recent years. It is a conv enient way to share information, do business and contact othe rs. 36. Getting rid of the addiction requires discipline and com mitment. Here are some steps that may help your kids to over come the Internet addiction.
First, you should try to find out just how much time your kids a re spending online. Track the information for a few weeks and try to separate time spent on homework or research and time spent playing. Compare this to the amount of time spent with friends, at clubs, in activities and for hobbies. 37.
38. In my house, the family computer sits in the living room. A t no time is someone allowed to be “behind closed doors” with a computer. Not only does this help honest people stay hone st, but it helps to connect to your teens when they are online. Besides, it is easier to monitor your teens’ time online.
39. Don’t speak of the fact that they are online all the time, but try to get to the root cause. Often someone gets online becau se he/she feels safe there. Talk to your teens about what is g oing on in their life. If they will not talk to you, then find a way t o connect your teens to the people they contact in real life. Lastly, remember that if an Internet addiction is growing, your kids need help. In many cases, the Internet is a safe place for people with poor self-esteem, negative self-
image, or for people who have been hurt. 40.
If there is a problem, and a person needs help, these sympto ms will continue to worsen until they get help.
A. If things are out of balance, try to correct them.
B. There are some disadvantages of getting online.
C. Second, move computers out of your children’s rooms.

E. Also, if your kids spend too much time online, talk to them.

ernet.

Nowadays, cheating in exams is popular among some studen ts. There are various reasons for this. Some students are lazy and don’t work hard at their lessons. Some want to get higher marks so that they can be praised or even admired. Others c heat in order to win a scholarship or enter a key school.
However, this phenomenon will have a very bad effect on mid dle school students’ habit of study. Those who usually cheat i n exams will never treat study seriously again because they b elieve they will always get good marks without working hard. Those who never cheat in exams will consider it’s unfair for th em, thinking studying hard is no more necessary.
In order to get rid of the bad effects, the school authority shoul d take effective measures to help the students know how imp ortant honesty is. Meanwhile, a strict discipline for exams sho uld be carried out. Whoever cheats should be severely punish ed.
