摘要

双关语是用一个词表达两层不同的含义，它不仅能使语言简练、丰富、一箭双雕,而且可喻指很多道理。

双关语具有多重修辞效果, 大大增强了语言感染力和生动性，也可以使文字富有讽刺的效果。本文从双关语的定义出发，拓展到双关语的词的分类，透析它的语用功能和修辞效果，对激发读者的阅读兴趣，陶冶读者的思想情操，培养读者的鉴赏能力和审美能力有一定的借鉴意义。

Abstract

Pun uses a word to convey two different meanings,. It can not only make the language succinct, rich, and kill two birds with one stone, but also explain many truths.

English pun bears multi-function rhetorical effects, which makes the language more vivid, humorous, ironic and implicit. This paper bases on the constitution on of puns, expands into classification of puns, and then reflects its pragmatic function and rhetorical effect. This paper can stimulate the reader's interest in the reading, and edify the readers' moral sentiments, which have a certain significance to improve readers‟ esthetic ability and appreciation levels.

引言

作为一个常见的修辞格,双关语有着历史悠久的英语语言基础,并被广泛用于文学。双关语的关键在于它富有表现力的幽默,使得文章生动形象。

双关语通常被用来描述人们的内心感受和表达上下文的丰富内涵。本文分为三部分。第一部分是双关语的定义,第二部分是双关语的语用功能,第三部分描述了双关语的修辞效果,这是旨在激发读者的阅读兴趣,培养读者的鉴赏能力和审美能力。

双关语的介绍

1.1双关语的定义

在英语中,双关语也被称为“paronomasia”或“”play on words。在过去的20

年里,人们已经对双关语有了彻底的讨论，但到目前为止在学术圈里仍然没有共

识定义的英语双关语。在Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English双关语是

“an amusing use of a word or phrase that has two meanings, or of words with the same sound but different meanings.”

双关语是定义在Webster‟s New World Dictionary为“the humorous use of a

word or words which are formed or sound alike but have different meanings, in such

a way as to play on two or more of the possible applications; a play on words.”

然而,《牛津英语词典》有着自己的看法,双关语:一个单词的用法,而这种方

式表明两个或更多含义或不同的关联,或使用两个或更多的单词相同或几乎相

同的声音与不同的含义,使其产生一个幽默的效果。它的定义表达了事实,双关语

依赖于相同或相似的虚假的单词甚至同一个词和不同的意义符合特定效果产生

的双关语。

1.2双关语的分类

双关语分为四类即谐音双关、词义双关、语法双关、引申双关。

1.2.1谐音双关

谐音双关是相同的声音的词语或近发音相同，但是意义不同。在英语中,有

很多词语具有同样的发音,但是含义不同,它为双关语制造了机会。例如：“M ine

is a long and sad tale!” said the mouse, turning the Alice and sighing.

“I t‟s a long tail, certainly”, said Alice, looking down with wonder at the mouse‟s

tail, but why do you call it sad?

在这个对话框,“tale”和“tail”有相同的声音,和老鼠所说的话是“tale”爱

丽丝把“tale”误认为“tail”,这故事是一个悲剧。然而,由于这个词的“tail”,

赋予了故事的幽默效果。

词义双关是在特定的上下文中相关的词汇拼写相似但有不同的含义。例如: To English will I steal and there I‟ll steal.
