Even though the numbers and percentages of immigrants in China are still significantly smaller than the figures which are quoted for European countries, there has already raised an immigration upsurge in China in recent years. These people, mostly from Africa, are drawn to China as a site for an enhanced sense of agency in relation to self-development, recognition of talent and the generation of wealth. Having excellent intellectual skills, possessing valid visas and experiencing high degrees of mobility and status allow these immigrants to acquire well-paying work in China.

Various difficulties need to be faced when people move to a totally unfamiliar environment, and majority of the troubles is associated with language and cultural apsects. Everything that composes our daily life like accommodation, social contact, health care, food or clothes purchasing, children’s schooling all have to be arranged appropriately. And in order to deal with them, the immigrants should continually improve their language skills, deepen their understanding of Chinese society and also extend their awareness of local cultures.

However, whether those immigrants can be integrated into Chinese society depends on not themselves but the attitudes of both sides. There’s no doubt that efforts need to be made by the immigrants for joining in with daily life activities and adapting to life here. But the help of local people and the govermant policy can not be neglected as well. Sometimes they play the role of hindering with cold reaction to immigrants, and sometimes they are kind of catalysts with open arms and hospitality.

It’s said that more money will be spent to improve infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals and roads , that is being put under extra pressure by an upsurge of immigrants. But from a positive perspective, we can also benefit from the presence of immigrants who brought professional skills to our country and opportunity to develop our intercultural knowledge and understanding. Up to now, the foreigners who immigrate to China are mostly people of high education and skills since China insist in carrying out restrictive immigration policies.
