Want to stay away from colds?Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful
and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according
to a new study. It's possible that being happy helps the body
fight illness, said the researchers from New York
University.
“It seems that positive(积极的)feelings may reduce the danger of illness,”said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study,Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often.People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study,Cohen's interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks.During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day. After the two weeks, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.

When most high school students complain about having to wake up extra early, they're usually referring to a swim practice before class or the lastminute study before a test. But that was never the case for Corey Patrick, who woke up at 4:30 every morning last year in order to arrive on time at Tarrant High School in Alabama.
Patrick had attended Tarrant City Schools since his fourth grade, but things got difficult when his family moved to a town 14 miles away.Even though his family didn't have any forms of transportation,Patrick didn't want to miss out on his senior year with friends,so he woke up at 4:30 every morning in order to make it to a 5:41 a.m.bus that would help him get to Tarrant on time. And just as he had done every other school day of the year,Patrick got up one morning to start the journey from his home to his high school; the only obvious difference that morning was that he was wearing his graduation gown (毕业礼服),which made that day's bus driver,DeJuanna Beasley, take some photos of him.She then shared them online with these words,“You tell me this isn't determination. He got on my bus to go to his graduation, and no one was with him.Sometimes it's all in what you want out of life.I was so proud of this young man.”

I was the youngest of the five boys and also had four sisters who had to pull together and take care of each other.Dad wasn't around,so I never knew him well.He killed himself when I was three years old, leaving Mom with the job of raising and providing for nine kids. She was a very hard worker, and in order to make ends meet, she hardly ever rested. With my mom as my example,I learned that hard work is the best way to get what you want.
Even as a little boy,I knew I was going to be successful.Of course,I dreamed about what I wanted to be when I grew up.But regardless of what I chose,I wanted to make my brothers, sisters and mom proud of me—not only by being successful in what I chose to do, but also a person who could be looked up to for the right reasons.

Many British people like to travel to Spain,Italy and other warm countries for their holidays. They want to live in the sun for a few weeks and many of them like to take their cars on holiday with them. Then they can travel round the warm countries and see many places in a short time.
But there is a problem. It is only twentytwo miles from Dover in England to Calais in France, but between the two towns there is the English Channel. It is necessary to take the cars across the sea,and this is not easy.
Some passengers put their cars on a plane and fly across with them, but that is expensive.Others drive their cars onto large ferries(渡船).This is cheap, but the boats are slow and sometimes the sea is rough. There are days when more and more people choose to travel by hovercraft(气垫船).

When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper,a special picture touched me.It gave the clothing sizes of each family member.I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves.I said to my sevenyearold twins,Brad and Brett, and threeyearold Meghan,“We have so mu ch,and these poor people now have nothing. We'll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this,I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things.Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away.A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy, her muchloved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys.“Oh,dear,”I said.“You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so mu ch.”Meghan said,“Lucy makes me happy,Mummy.Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too.”

In the 1940s, Lena Horne was the first AfricanAmerican in Hollywood to sign a longterm contract with a major movie studio. Her deal with MGM stated that she would never play the role of a servant.During this period, AfricanAmerican actors were mostly limited to playing servants or African natives.
But this refusal also limited her movie career.Horne was generally only offered the role of a nightclub singer. Her characters did not interact with white characters in these movies. This way, her part could be cut from the version of the movie that played in Southern States.
Lena Horne later wrote that the movie producers did not make her into a servant, but they did not make her into anything else, either.Lena Horne once said that World War Ⅱhelped make her a star. She was popular with both black and white servicemen. She sang on army radio programs and traveled to perform for the troops.During one event, she noted that German prisoners of war were permitted to sit closer to the stage than black soldiers. These experiences led to Lena Horne's work in the Civil Rights Movement.

I took the bus to school every day when I was in grade school.Alvin, our bus driver, came by every morning at 8:00 to pick us up.
We were lowerincome families. My parents barely made ends meet for them and five of us kids.Alvin picked up around twenty kids in our area and dropped us off after school.About once a month he would make a stop at the local drivein.Someone would come out and ask each of us if we wanted an ice cream or a drink.Alvin would pay for the whole bus out of his own pocket. The kindness that he showed was amazing. We didn't get treats like that too often and they are fondly remembered.
I remember him picking us up at the end of the school year and taking us to his home for a barn dance (谷仓舞).He would provide drinks and chips for everyone.

My husband and I recently went to Disney World with our children and grandchildren. Our grandchildren were excited about the attraction where they can drive the cars.Since our party was uneven in numbers and two people fit in each car,I sat out that one and headed down to take pictures of them.
As I waited for them to drive by,I noticed a car with a father and his son who looked to be about 7.They rolled down the hill, and then as they neared where I sat,the car shook a few times and then stopped.
The young driver looked frightened,“I can't do it.”
His father quietly said,“Yes,you can.”
“No.I can't!”
“Yes,you can.”
The little boy was almost in tears,“I CAN'T!”
