Write an essay in about 100–120 words based on your discussion in Optional Classroom Activities. You can take either of the following titles:1) I like to study on my own2) I like to study in a group2. If you didn’t do Task 3 in Optional Classroom Activities you can write an essay of around 120 words on the following topic.College Is Not an Ivory Tower▆Sample Essays for Task 1:I like to study on my ownMany of my classmates like to study together. However, I always like to study on my own, with good reasons. First, I feel that I can concentrate better when I study alone. When I have to work together with other people, I often get distracted and more often than not, I end up chatting with them without completing the task at hand. Second, when I study on my own, I can work at my own pace, choosing to spend more time on certain difficult sections and less time on less challenging parts. I can also check my class notes or reference books whenever I feel the need to. One final good advantage of studying alone is that unlike group work, self study is not restricted by time and space. In other words, if I feel like studying, I can do so at any time and anywhere.(146 words)I like to study in a groupAccording to a recent study, students who study together by discussing homework and problems usually score higher than those who work on their own.I am happy to hear that because I like to study in a group. I think we can reinforce our understanding of what we have learned in class by asking each other questions. Besides, it is always enjoyable working with someone else. A discussion on questions we don’t understand very well will help clear up any possible confusion. Last but not least, we should not ignore the importance of cooperation in our society. Working with others helps develop our team spirit, which has become essential in this modern world of ours. After all, two heads are always better than one.(125 words)▆ Sample Essay for Task 2:College Is Not an Ivory TowerPeople often say that college is an ivory tower and life on campus is cut off from the harsh realities of the real world. College may have been an ivory tower before, but it is not so any more. We college students are under various kinds of pressure. First of all, most of us are burdened with a heavy tuition fee, which keeps on increasing every year. So some of us have to work over ten hours every week. Life for those who can get financial help from their parents is not easyeither, as they very often have to follow their parents’ advice and take a major they don’t like. Finally those who are about to graduate suffer from a different kind of pressure: hunting for a job. It is no longer easy for a college student to get a decently paid job these days.(134 words)。

My family could barely get by on my small income from driving a cab. One late night I responded to a call for a cab ride. To my surprise, when I arrived at the address, I found it was a frail old lay who was awaiting me. After she got into the cab, I engaged her in conversation. I learnt that she was going to the hospice. Her doctor said she didn’t have very long. The old lady told me to drive through the downtown area. She pointed at some old buildings, telling me those were the places where she used to work or live. When the cab finally pulled up in front of the hospice, I didn’t accept her fare. In the rest of the day, I was lost in thought. Though I had to make a living, I lived not for the sole purpose of surviving. When circumstances looked gloomy, the small favour I had done could be acandle light. However faint the light was, it managed to warm up a soul and ennobled me as well. I did take pride in that small favour.Theme-Related Writing▆Do one of the following writing tasks after class.1) Suppose you were Frannie, the head waitress, in Text A. Write a short story about Stevie from your perspective.2)Read the following newspaper clipping and writea short essay on the question:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the Bus during Rush Hours?▆Sample Essay for Task 1:We all knew Stevie was mentally handicapped, so everyone, especially our boss himself, doubted whether he would be a capable busboy in the truck-stop restaurant where I worked as the head waitress. However, our worries were gradually removed one week later. Smiling and hard-working, Stevie won over all our trucker regulars as well as us employees.Later we learnt that Stevie badly needed the job because the money he earned made it possible for his mother and him to live together; otherwise he would be sent to a group home. So you can imagine how worried Stevie was when he had to take sick leave for heart surgery. He was afraid that he would lose his job. After the operation, in the week before he returned, he called 10 times to make sure that he could still have the job back. At that time, what concerned me most was how Stevie could handle the huge medical bills. But something happened which completely caught me unawares. Our regular customers, those warm-hearted truckers, were so generous that they, together with their companies, contributed over $10,000 for Stevie. That Thanksgiving Day was a big day when Stevie was back to work and when the money was presented to Stevie as a surprise gift. I cried a bit while people were cheering for the occasion. Now, Stevie is still working here. Our boss thinks that Stevie is the best worker he has ever hired.▆Sample Essay for Task 2:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the BusDuring Rush Hours?I am amazed to read what a blogger says about offering bus seats to the elderly. He claims that “it’s the young who need it more”because they go to work early in the morning and feel exhausted after a day’s work. The blogger also argues that it is unfair to offer seats to the elderly since they already enjoy free rides, and further suggests that during rush hours senior citizens be denied such treatment.I could never bring myself to agree with the blogger. Taking good care of the elderly is a universally accepted standard of conduct. In my opinion, offering seats to our elders is not just an indication of good manners; it is a moral issue. I always consider it my moral obligation to help others. Yes, you may feel comfortable for a while by remaining in your seat, but you will lose your character and moral values in the long run.Respecting the elderly is also our social convention. It is precisely out of our love and respect for the elderly that such special benefits asfree rides are offered to them. No one can deprive senior citizens of their right to go out by bus at any time they like, and what’s more, we should make sure that they get special care when the bus is fully packed with passengers.Caring for the elderly and being taken care of can be a mutually satisfying experience for everyone involved. It is through performing such small acts as offering seats to the needy that we learn to contribute to the building of a harmonious society.。

In other words, if I feel like studying, I can do so at any time and anywhere. (146 words)I like to study in a groupAccording to a recent study, students who study together by discussing homework and problems usually score higher than those who work on their own. I am happy to hear that because I like to study in a group. After all, two heads are always better than one.(125 words)▆Sample Essay for Task 2:College Is Not an Ivory TowerPeople often say that college is an ivory tower and life on campus is cut off from the harsh realities of the real world. College may have been an ivory tower before, but it is not so any more. We college students are under various kinds of pressure. First of all, most of us are burdened with a heavy tuition fee, which keeps on increasing every year. So some of us have to work over ten hours every week. Life for those who can get financial help from their parents is not easy either, as they very often have to follow their parents’ advice and take a major they don’t like. Finally those who are abo ut to graduate suffer from a different kind of pressure: hunting for a job. It is no longer easy for a college student to get a decently paid job these days.(134 words)。

Under such circumstances, names are no longer important.3) What can we learn about the silent woman from Para. 5?The silent woman always sits up front and never responds to others’ greetings. Talking is hard for her.9) What do you know about the silent woman’s family life? She is a single mother with a disabled son who is receiving special care away from home. She lives alone and feels lonely and misses her son very much. The Sunday-morning bus ride is the best thing she does all week, and an occasional visit to the fish restaurant is almost as good as the second best thing. She rides the Sunday-morning bus simply for the companionship of the driver whose name she doesn't know, but who appreciates the hot coffee she brings.10) How did the author and his wife feel about the dinner with the silent woman? They all had a wonderful time. For the silent woman, an occasional visit to the fish restaurant was a pleasant experience and this time it was even better with the companionship of the author and his wife. The author and his wife also enjoyed the dinner and they felt thatthe fish had never tasted better. When they left the restaurant, they were already friends with each other. And they shared their names.2 Read the following statements and then decide whether each of them is true or false based on the information contained in Text B. Literacy rates in the United States are also more highly correlated to 17 than IQ. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices. Click on the best choice. (20 points)Passage OneSign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that sign languages are unique — a speech of the hand. They offer anew way to probe how the brain generates and understands language, and throw new light on an old scientific controversy: whether language, complete with grammar, is something that we are born with, or whether it is a learned behavior. The current interest in sign language has roots in the pioneering work of one rebel teacher at Gallaudet University in Washington, D. C., the world's only liberal arts university for deaf people. When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something odd: among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher.Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural code, each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language (ASL) was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English (混杂英语). But Stokoe believed the "hand talk" his students used looked richer. He wondered: Might deaf people actually have a genuine language? And could that language be unlike any other on Earth? It was 1955, when even deaf people dismissed their signing as "substandard". Stokoe's idea was academic heresy (异端邪说).It is 37 years later. Stokoe — now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture — is having lunch at a café near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a revolution. For decades educators fought his idea that sign languages are natural languages like English, French and Japanese. They assumed language must be based on speech, the modulation (调节) of sound. But sign language is based on the movement of hands, the modulation of space. "What I said," Stokoe explains, "is that language is not mouth stuff — it's brain stuff."21. The study of sign language is thought to be _______.A. a new way to look at the learning of languageB. a challenge to traditional views on the nature of languageC. an approach to simplifying the grammatical structure of a languageD. an attempt to clarify misunderstanding about the origin of language22. The present growing interest in sign language was stimulated by _______.A. a famous scholar in the study of the human brainB. a leading specialist in the study of liberal artsC. an English teacher in a university for the deafD. some senior experts in American Sign Language23. According to Stokoe, sign language is _____.A. a substandard languageB. a genuine languageC. an artificial languageD. an international language24. Most educators objected to Stokoe's idea because they thought _____.A. sign language was not extensively used even by deaf peopleB. sign language was too artificial to be widely acceptedC. a language should be easy to use and understandD. a language could only exist in the form of speech sounds25. Stokoe's argument is based on his belief that _____.A. sign language is as efficient as any other languageB. sign language is derived from natural languageC. language is a system of meaningful codesD. language is a product of the brainPassage TwoA great majority of our nine million college students are in school not because they want to be or because they want to learn. They are there because it has become the thing to do or because college is a pleasant place to be in; because it's the only way they can get parents or tax-payers to support them without working at a job they don't like; because mothers want them to do so, or for some other reason entirely not related to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized. Some of the professors and administrators estimate that no more than 25 per cent of their students are interested in class work. For the rest, college is at best a social center or a place where time can be killed, and at worst a young people's home or even a prison that keeps them out of the way of economic life for a few more years.I no longer accept the idea that college is the best place for all high-school graduates. Just as the United States was the first nation to make great efforts to teach every small child to read and write, so during the 1950s, we became the first and the only great nation to offer higher education to all. During the 60's we built great state university systems as fast as we could. And adults — parents, employers, high school teachers began to push the youth to getan education. By 1970, colleges and universities were spending more than 30 billion dollars yearly. But still only half our high-school graduates were going on.Now the babies have graduated from college, the rate of growth of the student population has begun to increase. To keep their universities financially supported many institutions have begun to attract students by using whatever means they can. They sell college like soap, promoting features they think students want: creative programs, an environment helpful to meaningful personal relationships, and an education so free that it doesn't sound like college at all.26. The reason for most U. S. college students to go to school is NOT that ____.A. mothers want them to goB. college is a pleasant placeC. they want to continue their educationD. it's the only way to get financial support27. According to this passage, most of the college students _____.A. do not like to studyB. like to make friends at collegeC. find their universities as comfortable as their homesD. complain that a college is like a prison28. In order to get financial support, many institutions have begun to ______.A. sell soap to high-school graduatesB. spend more than 30 billion dollars yearlyC. make every effort to increase the student populationD. offer their students a large number of practical courses30. My family could barely get by on my small income from driving a cab. One late night I responded to a call for a cab ride. T o my surprise, when I arrived at the address, I found it was a frail old lay who was awaiting me. After she got into the cab, I engaged her in conversation. I learnt that she was going to the hospice. Her doctor said she didn’t have very long. The old lady told me to drive through the downtown area. She pointed at some old buildings, telling me those were theplaces where she used to work or live. When the cab finally pulled up in front of the hospice, I didn’t accept her fare. In the rest of the day, I was lost in thought. Though I had to make a living, I lived not for the sole purpose of surviving. When circumstances looked gloomy, the small favour I had done could be a candle light. However faint the light was, it managed to warm up a soul and ennobled me as well. I did take pride in that small favour.Theme-Related Writing▆Do one of the following writing tasks after class.1) Suppose you were Frannie, the head waitress, in Text A. Write a short story about Stevie from your perspective.2)Read the following newspaper clipping and write a short essay on the question:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the Bus during Rush Hours?▆Sample Essay for Task 1:We all knew Stevie was mentallyhandicapped, so everyone, especially our boss himself, doubted whether he would be a capable busboy in the truck-stop restaurant where I worked as the head waitress. Our regular customers, those warm-hearted truckers, were so generous that they, together with their companies, contributed over $10,000 forStevie. That Thanksgiving Day was a big day when Stevie was back to work and when the money was presented to Stevie as a surprise gift. I cried a bit while people were cheering for the occasion. Now, Stevie is still working here. Our boss thinks that Stevie is the best worker he has ever hired.▆Sample Essay for Task 2:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the Bus During Rush Hours?I am amazed to read what a blogger says about offering bus seats to the elderly. T aking good care of the elderly isa universally accepted standard of conduct. It is precisely out of our love and respect for the elderly that such special benefits as free rides are offered to them.

As society develops, m an’s transformation of nature has severely polluted his living environment. Deforestation leads to changes in rainfall patterns, causing devastating floods, droughts and sandstorms. The discharge of chemical pollutants endangers our health and the lives of other beings. And mass production has resulted in the shortage of irreplaceable natural resources such as coal and oil. If we take no immediate and effective steps to protect our environment, human beings may be the next species to become extinct. We should do our best to protect our environment by planting more trees, taking care of wildlife, reducing industrial wastes, using renewable energy, and imposing heavy fines on environmentally-unfriendly activities,so as to preserve the environment for future generations.(167 words)。

However, our worries were gradually removed one week later. Smiling and hard-working, Stevie won over all our trucker regulars as well as us employees.Later we learnt that Stevie badly needed the job because the money he earned made it possible for his mother and him tolive together; otherwise he would be sent to a group home. Our regular customers, those warm-hearted truckers, were so generous that they, together withtheir companies, contributed over $10,000 for Stevie. That Thanksgiving Day was a big day when Stevie was back to work and when the money was presented to Stevie as a surprise gift. He claims that “it’s the young who need it more” because they go to work early in the morning and feel exhausted after a day’s work. The blogger also argues that it is unfair to offer seats to the elderly since they already enjoy free rides, and further suggests that during rush hours senior citizens be denied such treatment.I could never bring myself to agree with the blogger. Taking good care of the elderly is a universally accepted standardof conduct. It is precisely out of our love and respect for the elderly that such special benefits as free rides are offered to them. No one can deprive senior citizens of their right to go out by busat any time they like, and what’s more, we should make sure that they get special care when the bus is fully packed with passengers.Caring for the elderly and being taken care of can be a mutually satisfying experience for everyone involved. It is through performing such small acts as offering seats to the needy that we learn to contribute to the building of a harmonious society.。
