But scientific evidence (证据) does little to support this idea. Going back to America of 1910, we find thatpeople were thinner than today. However, they ate more food. In those dayspeople worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people don’t eat more on average than thinner people. A 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers showed that fat people eat less than slim (苗条的) people.Studies also show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group atStanford University found the following interesting facts:The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat.The more they ran, the greater increase(增加) in food intake. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.Q: Which statement is true according to the passage?A. There is scientific evidence to support that people get fat because they eat toomuch.B. In 1910,Americans were thinner than today because they ate less.C.The person who runs more and eats more would lose more weight.D. Vitamins B in the diet come from some meats and vegetables, Milk, cottage cheese, and whole grains. When a grain is processed (加工), it loses vitamins. For example, there is a big difference between brown and white rice. When rice is processed, the brown outside is lost. The brown outside of rice has important vitamins B than processed rice.Vitamin C keeps the cells of the body together. It helps skin tissue (组织) recover from cuts and burns. Vitamin C in the diet comes from tomatoes, citrus (柑橘) fruits like lemons and oranges, and some vegetables such as cabbage and green peppers.Vitamin D is called “sunshine” Vitamin. When people sit outside, ultraviolet rays (紫外线) from the sun change fat in their skin to vitamin D. Vitamin D is also in cod liver oil and the yellow of eggs. It is sometimes added to milk. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium(钙). It helps build strong bones, and it prevents a disease in children that is called rickets (软骨病). When children have this disease, their bones bend because they do not become hard. Rickets is seldom found in sunny, tropical countries. Rickets is more common in countries that have long winters with little sunshine, in cities that have pollution that keeps the sun out, and in towns surrounded by mountains that keep the sun out.1. I haven’t heard from you for weeks. Is everything Ok with you?Do you still go to the gym every day? I used to go to the gym three times a week, but I don’t work out any more. I know another way to stay slim. Looking good is important to women, isn’t it? Most young women want a slim figure these days, especially here in Canada. I’m trying to lose weight because I’m so ashamed of my body. Since I’m preparing to act in a new TV show, I’m taking weight-loss pills called Fat-Less, which are quite popular among young women here. I hope to lose at least 10 kilograms. I take two pills a day and don’t need to exercise. The pills really work! I’m becoming slimmer and slimmer. I’ve lost 7 kilograms in the last two months. However, sometimes I don’t feel so energetic. My mother, who you met last year, keeps telling me not to take them because they are dangerous. She says health is the most important thing, and I agree, but then I look so slim at the moment.Write soon!Love,AmyDear Zhou ling,Things change so quickly! I’m now in hospital recovering from liver failure. I regret taking those weight-loss pills. They contain a harmful chemical that caused my liver to fail. The pills were going to completely destroy my liver if I continued taking them. My mother insisted on sending me to the hospital, where I received good medical treatment. It was a really painful experience, but I’m feeling better now. I follow my doctor’s advice and exercise for at least half an hour every day (but I seldom go to the gym!), and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. People should look after their bodies. My mother is right: don’t damage your health for a slim and attractive figure. It isn’t worth it. We shouldn’t be ashamed of the way we look, should we?I hope to hear from you soon.Love,AmyDear Amy,My computer was broken so I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today. I’m so sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering. You’re right. We shouldn’t be embarrassed about our weight. I think you look great as you are, and you’re a wonderful person. I know that the pressure to stay slim is a problem, especially for an actress. However, your mother knows best: nothing is more important than health. It’s the same in China--- many people, some of whom are not overweight at all, are always going on a diet or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous. I hope they can learn from your story.Love,Zhou ling。

说课稿英文Reading Dying to be thin…

Good morning everyone. Thank you all for your time. I’m glad to be here today. It’s an honor for me to present my lesson. First I’ll talk about teaching material. The text comes from Unit 3 Module 1 in Oxford Senior High English.【click】The students are expected to do some listening, speaking reading and writing based on the topic: health and beauty in this unit. This text consists of three letters about losing weight. The topic is familiar to the students, and it is a teaching theme not only accorded with time trade but also with practicability. Students must be interested in this topic.Teaching methods include: 1. task-based approach; 2. communicative approach; 3. individual report; 4. cooperative approach etc. different methods can make the class active. Teaching aids include: multimedia equipment; pictures, PPT etc. The students are supposed to get the learning paper before class and they should preview the text before class in order to understand the text better. The learning paper consists of two parts: the preview paper and the guiding paper. The preview paper is designed for the students to preview the text before class, and the guiding paper is designed for the students to study in class. There’re two learning aims in preview paper【click】:1.Students can be familiar with some difficult words and phrases.2. Students can learn something about health and beauty. The preview paper is designed for the students to study by themselves. They should preview the text and then finish the exercises individually with the aid of reference books. The teacher will explain the difficult part or the confusing part when showing the answers on PPT. the preview paper consists of three parts: 【click】1. Learn some difficult words and phrases.2. Translate the following sentences into Chinese.3. Fast reading.Part 1 consists of some new words and phrases. It is designed to help the students to better understand the text when they preview it. I found that the students had difficulties in phrases like: 4. recover from liver failure (Line18) ,6. as you are(Line35), so the answers should be presented like this. 【click】Part 2 includes some difficult sentences in the text. It is designed to check the students’understanding of the long and difficult sentences. I found that some students had difficulties in understanding the sentences. 【click】so the answers should be presented like this. 【click】Part 3 is fast reading. It includes two simple questions. 【click】1. Where does Amy come from? 2. What kind of pills did Amy take? The answers can be found easily in the text. part 3 is designed to lay ground for further reading.Checking answer to the preview paper takes up the first 2-3 minutes in class. The students can get a general understanding of the text by doing the exercises in preview paper. The teacher should explain the difficult or confusing parts in preview paper in detail, then the students are expected to read and recite this part to consolidate.1.That is the preview paper. As for the guiding paper, there’re three learning aims: 1. Students can understand the text better and form a positive attitude towards health and beauty.2.Students can develop an interest in learning English byexpressing their own opinions on the topic ‘looking good, feeling good’.Students can improve their abilities of understanding sentences with ‘however’ or ‘but’. 【click】The students are expected to read the text carefully and finish the corresponding exercises individually. The teacher only explains the difficult parts, as for the easy parts, just show the answers on the PPT for the students to check by themselves. There’re 7 steps in guiding paper: 1. Checking the answers of the preview paper.; 2. Lead-in; 3. Careful reading; 4. Reading strategy: understanding sentences with ‘however’ or ‘but’; 5. Task –based reading; 6. Discussion;7. Homework. The first step is Checking the answers to the preview paper; it takes 5 minutes. The second step is Lead-in; there are some pictures showed to interest the students. 【click】this step takes up 5 minutes. This text consists of three letters, so step 3 Careful reading is divided into A B C three parts, each part corresponds to a letter.Part A is based on the letter from Amy to Zhou Ling. Three tasks are designed to help the students to better understand the first letter. 【click】they are: 1. True or False questions; 2. Multiple Choice; 3. Blank filling about Main idea. The first and the second tasks are detail-finding exercises. The third task is more difficult compared with the previous two tasks. The students can’t find the answer directly from the text, instead, they should understand the letter completely and conclude. The students have 3 minutes to read the first letter silently and then finish the corresponding tasks. The students do the task quite well, so students just give the answer together and the teacher show the answer on PPT for them to check. This step costs 7 minutes.Part B is based on another letter from Amy to Zhou Ling. In order to avoid repetition, the exercise in this part is blank filling. There’re altogether 6 blanks. The students made more mistakes in blank 1, blank 2 and blank 4. as for blank 1, some of the students forgot to double “t” when writing the word “regretted”; as for blank 2. some students just moved the word “failure”from the text and didn’t know to change it to “fail”; as for blank 4. some students leave it undone because they couldn’t find a proper word to fill in the blank. The teacher explain these blanksin detail. as for the rest blanks, they’re quite easy, so the teacher show the answer on PPT for them to check. This part takes up 6 minutes.Part C is based on the letter from Zhou Ling to Amy. There’re three tasks in this part. They’re: 1. answer some questions; 2. blank filling about main idea; 3. discussion. First, the students have 2 minutes to read the third letter silently and finish task1 and task2. I found that the students made more mistakes in blank 2 of task. The teacher helps them find the reason of their mistakes and then gets the correct answer. The third task is discussion. 【click】the student must have much to talk about after reading the three letters. They are supposed to have a discussion in groups of four. After that, the teacher asks 2-3 students to share their ideas before class. The whole careful reading part takes up 20 minutes. The fourth step is reading strategy. 【click】reading strategy in this text is understanding sentences with words “however” or “but”. There’re three tasks in this part: 1. understanding sentences with “however” or “but” in this text. 2.answer the question: What’s the change in meaning between the two sentences before and after ‘however’and ‘but’? this question is quite easy. Most of the students can answer itquickly and directly. Task 3 is blank filling. It is an open exercise. There’s no definite answer here. The teacher can give an example to the student. Step 4 costs 7 minutes.Step 5 is task-based reading. It is designed to consolidate students’ understanding of the text. the students are expected to finish the task without consulting text books. I found that some students made mistakes in blank 4. 【click】the teacher asks two students to write their answers on the blackboard and then check the answer. This step takes up 5 minutes.Step 6 is a discussion on the title: “Dying to be thin”. There’re two meanings in the title. the students are expected to discuss the title in groups of four. Then the teacher asks some students to share their ideas. After that, the teacher present the reference meanings. The last step is homework. 【click】in order to consolidate what they learned in class and to help the students form positive attitude toward health and beauty, and to further understand the usage of “however” and “but”, two tasks are designed in this part. They are: 1, reading comprehension; the topics of reading comprehension are similar to the topics of the text. 2. exercises about “however” and “but”. The students are supposed to finish the homework after class. This is my presentation of the lesson. Any suggestions or criticisms about this lesson are welcome and appreciated. Thank you!Analysis of the teaching materialAnalysis of the studentsTeaching methodsTeaching aims and demandsTeaching aidsTeaching procedureBlackboard designAnd conclusion。
