赢家每天大叫：「Surprise！」输家永远在说：「Sorry……」史丹佛第一年结束后的暑假，我在洛杉矶的葛雷广告公司（Grey Advertising）找到暑期工作。
我把所有的家当塞进小车，花了6个小时，从旧金山开到洛杉矶。
到洛杉矶时已经下午5点，晚上要睡哪里呢？灵机一动，跑到UCLA的校园，查看学生布告栏上的便宜公寓。
看了4、5家，最后租下某个人家后院一间独立的客房。
当晚12点，我把车开进后院时，撞碎了左边的后照镜。
第二天去换200块美金！我心想：嗯……好的开始是成功的一半！葛雷是当时美国最大的独立广告公司（不属于任何集团），洛杉矶分公司有200多人。
我被分配到研究部门，负责他们最大的客户－－「幸运超级市场」（Lucky Stores）的顾客研究计划。
3个月下来，我把在史丹佛学的统计学运用得炉火纯青，也对超级市场各项商品的利润了如指掌。
但我学到最多、后来影响我工作和写作最深的，是4个字：「专业精神」。
专业精神表现在很多层次。
最基本的不外乎是服装、礼仪、准时、守信等。
进一步是娴熟和正确地把工作做好，不浪费其他和你有交集的同事和客户的时间。
「幸运超市」的顾客研究计划，是由我们雇用的研究公司进行电话采访，然后把采访结果交给我们分析。
我的工作，是把今年的结果和过去几年的结果比较，抓出异常的趋势，供研究部门的主管进一步诠释。
好比说，针对「你平均在幸运超市里购物的时间」这一题，若是今年的时间和过去几年比起来有明显减少的趋势，我必须要举起红旗。
好几次，在我没有举红旗的题目中，研究主管凭记忆判断今年的数字跟前几年有差别。
他调出过去资料一看，果然如此。
我的大意或无能，使得他必须多花10分钟看原始资料。
