They invest i n anti-vi rus software on the desktops, servers and email gateways and even put i n place procedures to ensure thei r anti-vi rus i s up-to-date wi th the very l atest detecti on routines.2 It sounds like companies have put in place adequate defenses to protect against vi ruses. B ut have they?3 Anti-vi rus software detects most of the viruses your users are likel y to encounter —often without the user even knowi ng. However, the software must be updated regularl y, preferably daily i n any large company. Even then, a very new vi rus can i nfect your users. Wi th the rapi d transmi ssi on of fil es through networks and the Internet, a vi rus can spread a considerable di stance before it can be i denti fied and protected against. Fortunately, onl y a few vi ruses ever do thi s but the li kes of Melissa and the Love Bug can infli ct serious damage before thei r progress i s stopped. Whil st employees become suddenly aware during the ensuing medi a excitement, they soon forget about the vi rus threat as the stories di sappear from the news headlines.4 Thi s i s the danger. Compl acency can set i n when there i s no percei ved "acti on" on the vi rus front wi th no global cri si s, and the importance of bei ng vigilant about viruses recedes i n your users' minds. They forget what the big deal was i n the fi rst place —after all, the anti-vi rus software deal s wi th the viruses, doesn't it? And i sn't i t the IT department's job to look after thi s sort of thing?5 Before you know i t your users are opening unsoli cited attachments once more, downl oading unauthorized software, and putting your company's data and credi bility at ri sk. All because the users think that they are worki ng in a safe environment. Employees see anti-virus software, fi rewalls and IT departments as guarantees that thei r computers will work and will be safe. Of course, there aren't any guarantees. Anti-vi rus software plays one, al bei t i mportant, part i n the defense of your company from mali cious attack but the securi ty of your computer system i s only as strong as the weakest li nk. A nd that, more often than not, i s the human factor.6 No empl oyer wants to come across as a killjoy or an ogre. Most will willingly accept that the happiest employees are those who feel that they are respected and trusted by thei r employer. Many companies accept that empl oyees will send and recei ve a certain amount of personal email and make the odd personal telephone call.7 However, the worry comes when employees start ri ski ng company securi ty i n pursuit of personal amusement. It i s vitally i mportant that empl oyees be educated about the vi rus threat but thi s cannot be a one-off event. The potentialthreat should al ways be i n the back of an empl oyee's mi nd and precautionary measures should be taken as a matter of course. There i s no harm i n reminding people about what could happen i f they let thei r guard down. In the end, educati on i s the key to a virus-free envi ronment and thi s i s a conti nual process. It may not be the most exci ting thi ng on the agenda but i t works.21. [T] [F] Empl oyees should be constantl y warned about vi rus threats to ensure the normal functi oning of the company's computer system.22. [T] [F] It can be concl uded that computer viruses can be avoided for good wi th good anti-virus software.23. [T] [F] Empl oyers are likely to allow their empl oyees to make some personal telephone call s or send and receivepersonal email s at work.24. [T] [F] Employee’s education about the potential vi rus threat i s not so important as the updati ng of the anti-vi russoftware.25. [T] [F] Compani es are tending to i nvest more on anti-virus software si nce they come to realize i ts seri ous i mpact onthei r operations.Passage 2Dir ections: Read the following passage and complete the five statements accor ding to the information you’ve obtained fr om the passage. Write your answer on the answer sheet.1. William (Bill) H. Gates i s chai rman and chief software archi tect of Mi crosoft Corporation, the worl dwi de leader i n software, servi ces and Internet technologies for personal and business computi ng. Mi crosoft had revenues of $25.3 billion for the fi scal year ending June 2001, and employs more than 40,000 people in 60 countries.2. Born on October 28, 1955, Gates and hi s two si sters grew up i n Seattle. Thei r father, William H. Gates II, i s a Seattl e attorney. Thei r late mother, Mary Gates, was a school teacher, U niversity of W ashington regent, and chai rwoman of United Way International.3. In 1973, Gates entered H arvard Uni versi ty as a freshman, but in hi s j uni or year, Gates left Harvard to devote hi s energi es to Mi crosoft, a company he had begun i n 1975 wi th hi s childhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer woul d be a val uable tool on every offi ce desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Gates' foresight and hi s vi si on for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry.4. U nder Gates' l eadership, Mi crosoft's missi on has been to continually advance and improve software technol ogy, and to make i t easier, more cost-effecti ve and more enj oyable for people to use computers. The company i s committed to a long-term view, reflected i n i ts investment of more than $4 billion on research and development i n the current fi scal year.5. In 1999, Gates wrote Business @ the Speed of Thought, a book that shows how computer technology can sol ve busi ness problems in fundamentally new ways. The book was published i n 25 l anguages and i s available i n more than 60 countri es. The book has received wide cri ti cal accl aim, and was li sted on the best-seller li sts of the New Y ork Ti mes, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and A . Gates has donated the proceeds of the book to non-profi t organizations that support the use of technol ogy i n educati on and skill s development.6. In additi on to hi s love of computers and software, Gates i s i nterested i n bi otechnol ogy. He sits on the board of ICOS,a company that speci alizes in protein-based and small-molecule therapeuti cs, and he i s an i nvestor i n a number of other biotechnology companies. Gates al so founded Corbi s, whi ch i s developing one of the worl d's largest resources of vi sual information — a comprehensive digi tal archive of art and photography from publi c and private coll ections around theglobe.7. Philanthropy i s al so i mportant to Gates. H e and hi s wi fe, Melinda, have endowed a foundati on wi th more than $21 billion to support philanthropi c i nitiati ves in the areas of global heal th and learning, with the hope that as we move into the 21st century, advances in these cri ti cal areas will be available for all people.8. Gates was marri ed on Jan. 1, 1994, to Melinda French Gates. The couple has two children: a daughter, Jenni fer Katharine Gates, born in 1996; and a son, Rory John Gates, born in 1999. Gates i s an avid reader, and enj oys pl ayi ng gol f and bridge.26.The word “late” i n the second paragraph means ____________________________________.27.The key to the success of Mi crosoft i s ____________________________________________.28.The more i mportant bestseller li sts i n the USA incl ude those of __________, __________ and __________.29.In additi on to hi s l ove of computers and software, Bill Gates i s al so i nterested i n __________, _________ and__________.30.“These criti cal areas” in Paragraph 7 refer to ___________.Passage 3Directions:Read the following passage carefully and then answer the followed questions according to the passage.1. In 1979 Mary Fasano enrolled in Spani sh, her first course at the Harvard Extension School. Since she al ready knew a little Italian, she thought learning Spani sh woul d be a good way to start her undergraduate education. Eighteen years and 43 courses i n Spani sh, Italian, fine arts, hi story, philosophy, classi cal civilizati ons, and creative wri ti ng later, Mary i s earni ng her Bachel or of Liberal Arts degree thi s June. The fact that Mary stayed true to her academi c goal every year for 18 years i s noteworthy, and the fact that she was 71 years ol d when she started and i s 89 years old now i s remarkable.2. Mary was born in Nati ck, Rhode Island, on May 12, 1908, of Italian immigrant parents. A bri ght and talented student who l oved l earning, she left school at 14 to work in a cotton mill to help support her struggli ng family. "I made a promi se to mysel f that I would go back to school someday," she said. She tri ed to go back to school several times once her fi ve children were grown and the family busi ness, Fasano Diner and Catering, i n Braintree, Massachusetts, was i n the black, but the demands of restaurant li fe competed with the demands of academi c li fe. Finally, after 60 years i n the workforce, Mary deci ded to reti re. She sol d the diner, her chil dren took over the catering busi ness, and she went back to school. The fi rst thing she did wi th her newfound free ti me was to earn her hi gh school equival ency diploma at Braintree High School.3. Then she came to Harvard. "I was nervous, but I thought I would give it a try," she recalled. "Starti ng a busi ness was a ri sky thi ng to do, but we made it, and now they call us the Cadillac of caterers. I knew I coul d give Harvard a try." Starting college at 71 demonstrates that Mary still accepted ri sks in pursuit of her dreams; staying the course for 18 years testifi es to her determi nation to fulfill a promi se she made to herself 75 years before; and earni ng honors grades i n math, foreign languages, philosophy, and literature in her late 80s proves her academi c commi tment. For all these reasons, Mary i s the "Cadillac" of ALB graduates.4. Mary's dramati c academi c journey symbolizes the mi ssion of the Undergraduate Degree Program at the H arvard Extension School: giving academi cally talented men and women a second chance at ful filling thei r educati onal goal s, whether they are 29 or 89 years ol d.31.What made Mary drop out of the school when she was young?32.Could you guess on why Mary knew a little Italian?33.Why Mary could not go back school until she was 71?34.Could you briefly evaluate Harvard Extension School according to Mary’s case?35.What do you learn from Mary’s experience?Passage 4Directions:Read the following passage carefully and then choose the best answer for each question accor ding to the passage.1. A t the Uni versi ty of Cali fornia at Berkel ey, academi c research files al so began to fill with worthless data and at Stanford Research Institute; several computer-based projects are now in danger. One project that will now likely have to be scrapped i s a mul timillion dollar program being developed to test Defense Department software.3. The vi rus i s a program di sgui sed (掩盖) as a message. Once i n the computer, i t takes over and gi ves the computer new i nstructions. It i s believed the vi rus was entered i nto the computer network some time ago and was programmed to cause it to work late W ednesday.4. At the Nasa A mes Research Center in Mountai n V iew, Cali fornia, the vi rus was noti ced late W ednesday night when it began to overtake (超过) the CPU , or central processi ng unit, of mai n system. The vi rus then occupied the computer’s central brains, preventing them from doing the tasks they should have been doi ng.5. The Pentagon says some of i ts i nformati on systems have shown evi dence of tampering, al so, but the virus did not reach any classi fied or weapon system files. There was once an ant that was very thirsty. It ran here and there looking for some water but could not find any. Then suddenly, when the ant was almost ready to die of thirst, a large drop of water fell on it.The ant drank the water, which saved its life. The water was actually a tear from a young girl who was crying. Because of her sadness, the tear had magical qualities and suddenly the ant could speak the language of human beings. The ant looked up and saw the young girl sitting in front of a huge pile of seeds."Why are you sad?" asked the ant."I'm the prisoner of a giant." the girl told the ant. "He won't let me go until I've made three separate heaps of grain, barley(大麦)and rye(黑麦)out of this huge pile of seeds in which they are all mixed together.""That will take you a month!" the ant said, looking at the huge pile of seeds."I know," the girl cried, "and if I can’t finish by tomorrow, the giant will eat me for his supper!""Don't cry," the ant said, "my friends and I will help you."Soon thousands of ants were at work, separating the three kinds of seeds. The next morning, when the giant saw that the work had been done, he let the girl go.Thus it was one of her tears that saved her life. Although the United States is a big country, it is not the largest in the world. In 2000, its population was over 222 million. When this land first became a nation, after winning its independence from England, it had thirteen states. Each of the states was represented on the American flag by a star. All these states were in the eastern part of the continent. As the nation grew toward the west, new states were added and new stars appeared on the flag. For a long time, there were 48 stars. In 1959, however, two more stars were added to the flag, representing the new states of Alaska and Hawaii.Indians were the first people of the land which is now the United States. There are still many thousands of Indians now living in all parts of the country. Sometimes it is said that the Indians are “the only real Americans”. Most Americans come from all over the world. Those who came first in greatest numbers to make their homes on the eastern coast of North America were mostly from England. It is for that reason that the language of the United States is English and that its culture and customs are more like those of England than those of any other country in the world. (10 分)(1). 10Chinese calligraphy is a unique art and the unique art treasure in the world. The formation and development of the Chinese calligraphy is closely related to the emergence and evolution of Chinese characters. In this long evolutionary process, Chinese characters have not only played an important role in exchanging ideas and transmitting culture but also developed into a unique art form. Calligraphic works well reflect calligraphers' personal feelings, knowledge, self-cultivation, personality, and so forth, thus there is an expression that "seeing the calligrapher's handwriting is like seeing the person". As one of the treasures of Chinese culture, Chinese calligraphy shines splendidly in the world's treasure house of culture and art.补充翻译:Although many students seem allergic to English and always get lost in English learning, they still feel obliged to learn it well. Then how can teachers make students’ journey of English learning enjoyable? Effective, precise, and beneficial communication depends upon grammar and a good vocabulary. Thus, for the students with language deficit and should learn from scratch, it does make sense to teach them the essential framework of language, accurate grammar and proper vocabulary. Learning grammar and a good vocabulary is just like driving with a road map in a well-conditioned car. One should often study the road map (check grammar) and tune up the car engine (adjust vocabulary). Equipped with these two essential assets, students will surely become attached to English and have excellent control in their journey of English learning.Text B2 1.D 2.A 3.C 4.A 5.C 6.B 7.C D4 1.mysterious 2.desperate 3.devise 4.negotiate 5.recalled 6.specifically 7.depict 8.ignorance 9.expand 10.confusion5 1.apply to 2.in a bid to 3.end up 4.Speaking of 5.get hold of 6.appealed to7.Leaving… behind 8.focus on8 1.essential framework 2.proper vocabulary 3.excellent control nguage deficit 5.high standards nguage proficiency 7.acquire knowledge petent communication 9.overcome deficiencies 10.sketch thoughts 11.effective communication 12.advanced vocabularyText A3 1.promotes 2.accelerate 3.mystery 4.insight 5.boost 6.analysis 7.calculate 8.barriers 9.destruction 10.protest5 1.excess 2.bearing 3.objective 4.intensify 5.execute 6.promising 7.exclude 8. identity 9. offend 10.housing6 1.C 2. We encourage all students to volunteer for at least one community activity before they graduate. A new community program called "One On One" helps elementary students who've fallen behind. Your education majors might be especially interested in it because it offers the opportunity to do some teaching, that is, tutoring in math and English. You'd have to volunteer two hours a week for one semester. You can choose to help a child with math, English, or both. Half-hour lessons are fine, so you could do a half hour of each subject two days a week.Professor Dodge will act as a mentor to the tutors---he'll be available to help you with lesson plans or to offersuggestions for activities. He has office hours every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. You can sign up for the program with him and begin the tutoring next week.I'm sure you'll enjoy this community service…and you'll gain valuable experience at the same time. It looks good on your resume, too, showing that you've had experience with children and that you care about your community. If you'd like to sign up, or if you have any questions, stop by Professor Dodge's office this week.6.What is the purpose of the talk? ____________ BA:To explain a new requirement for graduation.B:To interest students in a new community program.C:To discuss the problems of elementary school students.D:To recruit elementary school teachers for a special program.7.What is the purpose of the program that the dean describes? __________ CA:To find jobs for graduating students.B:To help education majors prepare for final exams.C:To offer tutorials to elementary school students.D:To provide funding for a community service project.8.What does Professor Dodge do? ____________ AA:He advises students to participate in the special program.B:He teaches part-time in an elementary school.C:He observes elementary school students in the classroomD:He helps students prepare their resumes.9.What should students interested in the tutorials do? __________ DA:Contact the elementary school.B:Sign up for a special class.C:Submit a resume to the dean.D:Talk to Professor Dodge.10.Whom do you think the speaker addresses to? _________ BA:FacultyB:StudentsC:FreshmanD:Graduating students of the university.Passage TwoAll over the world people enjoy sports. Paper was not made in southern Europe until the year 1100. Scandinavia—which now makes a great deal of the world’s paper—did not begin to makes it until 1500. Most paper is made from wood. Paper-making is an important British industry and paper from Britain is sold to many countries such as Australia and South Africa. Some of the wood used in the British paper making industry comes from trees grown in Britain, but wood is also bought from other countries such as Norway. One tree is needed for every four hundred copies of a forty-page newspaper. If half the adults in Britain buy one daily paper, this uses up over a thousand trees a day. All over the world, trees are being cut down faster than they are being planted, so there may be a serious need for paper at the beginning of next century. When we think of paper, we think of newspaper, books, letters and writing paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of paper is used for books and newspaper, etc. Paper is very good for keeping you warm. Each year, more and more things are made of paper. Now we hear that chairs, tables ,and even beds can be made of paper. But the latest in paper making seems to be paper houses.16. Where was paper invented AA. In China.B. In southern EuropeC. This need or desire to achieve a certain goal can make the difference between success and failure. Motivation can come from two sources: from inside of you or from outside of you. In the first case, motivation comes from your hopes and expectations, from your desire to do something or to be someone. Study purposes that result from personal inner desires are individual, and various. If you have not already done so, you should think carefully about what you hope to gain from your studies, and why. You should set a goal and direct all your study efforts toward reaching it. A goal of this kind is important because it will determine the direction and degree of your motivation for study. Not everyone is highly motivated from within and on one is continuously motivated from within. Fortunately there is another source of motivation: from outside. In education the most obvious kind of outside motivation is grades. For many students, course grades are an immediate, short-range motivation for study. This is one of the reasons for examinations and grades, but they must not become a goal in themselves. Grades help to motivate you from day to day, but they are only small, artificial steps to your ultimate goal. It would be wrong to set grades as your only ambition.A textbook like this cannot provide you with motivation; that must come fromyourself. But as an encouragement, it is useful to know that good study habits depend upon good motivation. And good study habits are important because they help you get more done in less time. It is not a matter of how much you study; more important is how well you study.21.Inside motivation comes from_______D_________.A.your need and desireB. your hopes and expectationsB.your desire to do something or to be someone D. both B and C22.Study purposes_________A___.A.are different from person to personB. are personal inner desiresB.share some common points D. should be carefully made23.If you haven’t set a goal in your studies,__________C_______.A.you will most probably become a failureB. you will never be a good studentmay lose direction and lack motivation D. you won’t have good study habits24. According to the passage, why are examinations and grades necessary in educationBA.Because they can make the difference between success and failure.B.Because they can motivate many students to study harder.C.Because they can check what you have gained from your studies.D.Because they are small, artificial steps to an ultimate goal.you want to be an efficient learner, you must__________D____.A.Have clear study purposesB. be always motivated from both inside and outsideC. set grades as your ambitionD. have good study habits三、词汇和语法结构(每题2分,共30分)26. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answersmarked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:What makes it rain? Rain falls from clouds for the same rea son anything falls to Earth. The Earth’s gravity pulls it. But every cloud is made of water droplets or ice crystals. Why doesn’t rain or snow fall constantly from all clouds? The droplets or ice crystals in clouds are exceedingly small. The effect of gravity on them is minute. Air currents move and lift droplets so that the net downward displacement is zero, even though the droplets are in constant motion.Droplets and ice crystals behave somewhat like dust in the air made visible in a shaft of sunlight. To the casual observer, dust seems to act in a totally random fashion, moving about chaotically(混乱地)without fixed direction. But in fact dust particles are much larger than water droplets and they finally fall. The cloud droplet of average size is only 1/5,000 inch in diameter. It is so small that it would take sixteen hours to fall half a mile in perfectly still air, and it does not fall out of moving air at all. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 1/125 inch or larger can it fall from the cloud. The average raindrop contains a million times as much water as a tiny cloud droplet. The growth of a cloud droplet to a size large enough to fall out is the cause of rain and other forms of precipitation(降水). This important growth process is called “coalescence”.1. What is the main topic of the passage?A. The mechanics of rain.B. The climate of North AmericaC. How gravity affects ice crystals.D. Types of clouds.2. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country’s imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit (贸易逆差)is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import raw materials or manufactured goods. One effect of a trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S. industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.6. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. Some worldwide economic problems.B. The cause and consequences of trade deficit.C. Lack of resources in underdeveloped countries.D. High labor and material costs in developed countries7. Lack of natural resources.D. An undeveloped industrial base.10. It can be inferred from this passage that American industries ________.A. do not pay their workers sufficientlyB. are hurt by a trade imbalanceC. imported labor and material from abroadD. are able to prevent a trade deficitQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Newspapers, along with reporting the news, instruct, entertain, and give opinion. An important way for reading a large, big-city newspaper is knowing how to take it apart. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, classified ads? Does your paper have other sections?News stories give facts, not the autho r’s opinions. Editorials do the opposite: you can expect an editorial to take sides. Some newspaper editorials have a by-line with the author’s name, but many newspapers have unsigned editorials. These reflect the opinions of the publisher or editor.Y ou can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to omit unnecessary words. Y ou can expect to find the most important facts in the lead paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. Y ou can expect important news items to be on the front page. Y ou can expect less important items to be on the inside pages. Most of all, the more you know about the current news, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way for reading newspapers is reading one frequently.11. Unit 7Text A翻译(黑体字是课后填空题)What Animals Really Think动物到底想些什么Eugene Linden尤金·林登1 Over the years, I have written extensively about animal-intelligence experiments and the controversy that surrounds them. Do animals really have thoughts, what we call consciousness? Wondering whether there might be better ways to explore animal intelligence than experiments designed to teach human signs, I realized what now seems obvious: if animals can think, they will probably do their best thinking when it serves their own purposes, not when scientists ask them to.

2 And so I started talking to vets, animal researchers, zoo keepers. Most do not study animal intelligence, but they encounter it, and the lack of it, every day. The stories they tell us reveal what I'm convinced is a new window on animal intelligence: the kind of mental feats animals perform when dealing with captivity and the dominant species on the planet —humans.于是我开始与兽医、动物研究人员以及动物园饲养员交谈。
