It was very hard for the Queen to choose the best one. One evening, she disguised herself and went to where the three sheiks were having their evening meal. She asked them to give her something to eat. The first sheik gave her some stale (不新鲜的)food left over from the day before. The second sheik gave her a tough piece of old earners tail. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort. This attitude toward manual (体力的)labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地)furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on tabla and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education. 11. From paragraph 1, we know that in America .A.people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manB.people can always rise to the top through their won effortsC.college professors win great respect from common workersD.people feel painful to mention their fathers as laborsAccording to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because . A. servants in American are hard to getB.she takes pride in what she can do herselfC.she can hardly afford servantsD.it is easy to prepare a meal with canned foodThe expression “wait on table“ in the second paragraph means "A. work in fl furniture shopB. keep accounts for a barC. wait to lay the tableD. serve customers in a restaurantThe author's attitude towards manual (体力的)labor is .A. positiveB. negativeC. humorousD. criticalWhich of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?A. A Respectable Self—made Family.B.American Attitude toward Manual Labor.C.Characteristics of American Culture.D.The Development of Manual Labor.第三局部:词汇与结构(共5小题,每题2分,总分值1()分)此局部共有5个未完成的句子,针对每个句子中未完成的局部有4个选项,请从A, B, C, D四个选项中选出正确选项。

But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company(剧团),usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and successwithout this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!6. From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession_________.A .sought after by too manyB. too difficult for young peopleC. for slim people onlyD. one can go into without special training7. For someone who feels he must act, it is very likely that ______________.A. he will become a film star at long lastB. he will become a stage managerC. he will be well paidD .he will end up without any success8. The film producer found Connie Pratt one morning when she was __________.A. at work in a bicycle factoryB. driving past him in her carC. going to a film studioD .waiting for a bus9. A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself ________________.A. the most famous actress of the worldB. playing the leading female role in a playC. as famous as the greatest actor of the worldD. no less famous than the leading actor of the day10. The concluding sentence "chances like this happen once in a blue moon" means______________.A. this is something which happens once in a whileB. this is a highly profitable chanceC. this is something highly possibleD .this is a very rare chancePassage 2Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives something different about it. Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush-hour traffic jam at the crossing. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children. For perception is the mind's explanation of whatthe senses --- in this case, our eyes --- tell us. Many psychologists today are working to try to decide just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific method, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. By measuring and charting the results of many experiments, they are trying to find out what makes different people perceive totally different things about the same scene.11. Seeing and perceiving are ____________.A. the same actionB. two actions carried on entirely by the eyesC. two separate actionsD. several actions that take place at different time12. Perceiving is an action that takes place ______________.A. in our eyesB. only when we think very hard about somethingC. only under the direction of a psychologistD. in every person's mind13.
1. Excuse me,would you lend me a hand?A. Certainly, what can I do for you? C. It’s nothing.B. Please don’t mention it. D. Yes, I have a hand.2. May I use your new dictionary?A. Yes, I’d love to.B. Sure, Here you are.C. Yes, give you.D. I’m not sure.3. I wonder if I can ask you some questions about grammar.A. Oh, thank youB. I don’t know either. C .What is it? D. Yes, of course.
答语的规律之一是“礼貌原则”:(1)当你接受帮助时,要用“No, thank you.”、“That’s OK. I can mange.”等回答;(2)当别人向你道歉时,要用“You’re welcome.”、“It’s a pleasure.”、“Not at all.”等回答;(3)当别人向你道歉时用“That’s all right.”、“Don’t worry about that.”等回答;(4)当听到不幸的消息时一定要表示同情,要用“I’m sorry to hear that”回答;(5)当对方用“Do/Would you mind if I…?”提出请求时,回答往往用“No, of course not.”、“No, not all right.”
1. A. Excuse me, how far is the airport from here?B. It’s about thirty miles.2. A. I’m sorry. Now what were we talking about?B. You were saying that you used to be a physical therapist.
1. Hello, could I speak to Mary please?A. Who are you?B. Hello, who are you looking for?C. Are you Jane?D. Yes, speaking.
或“Who’s speaking?”;如果所找的人不在场,可使用“I’m afraid he/she is not in.”或“Can I take a message?”
2. You have n’t finished reading that novel, have you?A. Yes, I haven’t.B. No, I haveC. No, I haven’t.D. Yes, I did it.
