Three writing effective paragraphs

Three writing effective paragraphs

Workshop Three: Writing Effective Paragraphs.au/tldinfo/writingskills/documents/ 3_effective_paras09.pdfAs a paragraph is the basic unit of an essay, an awareness of paragraph structure willfacilitate your understanding of essay organisation.What is a paragraph?A paragraph is a group of related sentences that develops one main idea. It has threemajor structural parts: (1) a topic sentence, (2) supporting sentences, and (3) aconcluding sentence. The writer may add a final comment after the conclusion.Let us have a look at an example of such a paragraph:River RaftingRiver rafting is a challenging sport with important requirements. First ofall, planning your trip carefully ensures your safety at all times. Therefore,the river-rafting company you choose should have a good safety record.You can select a river-rafting trip from level I (no experience) to level VI(the most experience). At level I, the river moves slowly and does nothave many dangerous rocks and boulders, so you can actually enjoy the scenery. At each level up the scale, there is an increasing number of powerful waves and dangerous rocks. When the river is high from melting snow, the current is fast, and the ride is rough. Therefore, it is only forthe most experienced river runner. In addition, river rafting requiresspecial equipment. You ride an inflatable rubber boat with an expertlytrained guide and a group of six to eight people. Everyone must wear alife jacket and a helmet and be able to use a paddle at the most difficult levels. Finally, you must be alert at all times. You must stay safely in theraft as it makes its way down the raging river. The guide will shout instructions, and the passengers must obey instantly and work as a teamto avoid disaster. The chances of falling overboard are great. When someone does, the passengers will try to grab and pull him or her aboard. Because river conditions can be dangerous at the higher levels of difficulty, the wild, exciting adventure is only for the courageous and experienced.In short, if you are fearless and in good physical condition and can react quickly, river rafting is the ideal outdoor sport for you.In the paragraph titled ‘River Rafting’, the first sentence is the topic sentence. It tells the reader what the paragraph is about: 'requirements for river rafting'. The fifteen supporting sentences that follow supply the details about riverrafting. The seventeenth , or next to last sentence, is the concluding sentence. It makes a final statement about the topic and tells the reader that the paragraph is finished. The very last sentence is the writer’s comment about the subject.2Now, let’s study each part of the paragraph in detail.The Topic SentenceA topic sentence is the most important sentence in a paragraph as it indicates what the paragraph is going to discuss. For this reason, the topic sentence is a helpful guide both to the writer and the reader: The writer can see what information to include. The reader can see what the paragraph is going to be about and is, therefore, better prepared to understand it. It is a complete sentence and is usually (but not always) the first sentence in the paragraph. Determining the subject of a topic sentence is a process of narrowing down an idea from general to specific. If you are given a specific writing assignment, such as an essay question in an examination, then what you can write about is limited. But, when your instructor suggests a very general topic, such as environment, education, or nuclear power, then you must narrow the subject to a particular aspect that can bediscussed in one paragraph.For example, suppose you are interested in writing about sports. It would be impossible to cover such a big topic in one paragraph, so you narrow the subject toperhaps water sports, if that is your interest. Water sports is still, however, too broada topic for a paragraph, so you might even further narrow the topic to a type of watersports, such as river rafting. The point is, you must narrow the subject of yourparagraph to a specific focus so that you can write about it clearly, completelyand effectively.The diagram below illustrates the process of narrowing down a general topic to aspecific one.generalS P O R T SW a t e r s p o r t son a riverdangerousriver raftingspecific (adapted from Oshima and Hogue, Writing Academic English, p. 4)。

Use active voice more frequently than passive voice. NOT: The child was bitten by a snake. BUT: A snake bit the child. Use figurative language for creative sentences. NOT: She ran home as quickly as she could. BUT: She blew in the door like the wind.
Exclamatory sentences in the English language are the sentences that attempt to powerful feelings, or emotions;
I'm leaving! I can not wait to graduate! I love you so much! We beat that other team good! I can't believe how tall giraffes really are! I can't believe this, I am so upset! (Refer to the textbook p40)
Interrogative sentences in the English language are the sentences that form a question.
What do you think I should wear the pink shoes or the white sneakers? What did the teacher say to you yesterday? Did you go to the movies yesterday?
Writing Effective Sentences (1)
IDENTIFYING SENTENCES WITH PURPOSE AND THE TYPES OF SENTENCES
Effective sentence writing is not done just by putting together subjects and predicates. They are also put together by knowing what they will be used to perform. In other words, the purpose of the sentence can establish its effectiveness. For example, there are sentences that declare, give a command, ask questions, and show emotion. These sentences are declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory.
Sentences may be classified according to their structure as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. A simple sentence has only one subject and one predicate (either or both of which may be compound): Jack started a coin collection. [SUBJECT-VERBOBJECT] A compound sentence consists of at least two main clauses: Jack started a coin collection, and his wife bought an album of rare stamps. [MAIN CLAUSE, and MAIN CLAUSE]
Vary sentence beginnings. If every sentence begins with a subject followed by a verb, you create monotony. Instead, begin sentences with these common variations: • After dinner last night.... (prepositional phrase) • Walking home alone.... (participial phrase) • To put her best foot forward.... (infinitive phrase) • After we ate dinner last night.... (adverb clause) • Yes.... (introductory word) • Thus.... (transitional word) • No matter the results.... (transitional phrase)se characteristics
Accurately exhibit one of four structures: simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. Use strong words, including specific nouns and verbs. Include variety in their beginnings, structure, and length. Use parallel structures for parallel ideas. Put the main idea in the main clause and subordinate ideas in subordinate clauses. Place the most important idea at the end, the second most important idea at the beginning, and tuck other information in the middle. Follow the rules of grammar, mechanics, and usage.
STEP 2: Choosing Strong Words
Any sentence structure is strengthened by strong words. Consider these suggestions: Use strong nouns and verbs in order to eliminate wordy adjectives and adverbs. NOT:The young boy walked slowly across the yard. BUT:The toddler inched his way across the yard. Use more action verbs than linking verbs. NOT:He was tall and handsome. BUT:The tall, handsome man caught her eye.
STEP 3: Varying Sentences
Repeated sentence structures, no matter how good, bore your reader. Variety, as the cliche goes, is the spice of life; so spice up your writing accordingly. Follow these suggestions:
Imperative sentences in the English language are the sentences that make a command or request;
Get me some water. Leave that cat alone. Go to the store for me. Bring me some ice.
