In our case, Preeta is like an elder sister to Zarreen and that’s the most important,” says Ashan Sabri from London, whose daughter Zarreen, 18, is having tuition in biology and chemistry in preparation for A-levels this summer. In fact, Preeta Datta is only six years older than her pupil and she is happy to provide extra tuition through mobile phone. “Zarreen will call me two or three times a week with a question about biology or chemistry, and that’s fine with me,” says Datta. The real question is:does tutoring do any good?“It’s not the magic bullet,”says educator Judith Ireson. “It’s still up to the child to do the learning. If he or she isn’t interested, then sending them to a private tutor won’t do any good.”In this case, it’s time to break open the Champagne? “Not necessarily,” says Elaine Tyrrell, head of a private school.“While we recommend private tutoring for children whose first language isn’t English, we don’t encourage it for the others,” says Tyrrell. “With the level of education they get here, children really ought to be able to pass the entrance exams. 2017_2018学年高中英语阶段仿真检测一新人教版选修1
阶段仿真检测(一)A卷学业水平达标【说明】本试卷满分120分,考试时间100分钟Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AResearchers believe that the insect is better at managing congestion (拥挤) than humans.Ants are the most numerous type of animal on Earth with brains that contain about 250,000 cells — the largest among insects. Now collective intelligence expert Dr.Dirk Helbing says understanding more about ants could help solve one of the headaches of modern life —road congestion. His team set up an “ant motorway” with two routes of different widths from the nest to some sugar syrup (糖浆). Soon the narrower route became congested. But when an ant returning along the congested route to the nest collided with another ant just starting out, the returning ant pushed the newcomer onto the other path. However, if the returning ant had enjoye d a troublefree journey it did not redirect the newcomer. The result was that just before the shortest route became clogged the ants were diverted (转移) to another route and traffic jams never formed. The researchers also created a computer model of more complex ant networks with routes of different lengths. The team found that even though ants being rerouted sometimes took a longer route, they still got to the food quickly and efficiently.Dr.Helbing, of the Dresden University of Technology in Germany, said that while you cannot allow cars to collide with vehicles coming in the opposite direction as a form of traffic control, you could do the next best thing and allow them to communicate. His plan is to force cars traveling in one direction to tell oncoming vehicles what traffic conditions they are about to encounter —so they can take evasive (回避的) action if necessary.1.The first paragraph implies that________.A.ants are clever and good at dealing with traffic jams because of developed brain functionB.ants have a special way to manage congestionC.insects are similar to animals in dealing with traffic jams because of developed brain functionD.insects have more advantages than humans解析:选A 在昆虫中蚂蚁大脑的细胞最多,所以比较聪明,擅长处理交通问题。

Hiring private tutors for our childrenis now widespread. And this year, as always, the Easterholidays will be peak time for tutor demand.“My husband and I tried to tutor her at home, but we foundall our knowledge was out of date and we were only confusing Zarreen. We also tried a group revision course but all the children were sitting exams for different boards (入学考试the money. In our case, Preeta is like an elder sister to Zarreen and that’s the most important,” says Ashan Sabri from London, whose daughter Zarreen, 18, is having tu ition in biology and chemistry in preparation for Alevels this summer. In fact, Preeta Datta is only six years older than her pupil and she is happy to provide extra tuition through mobile phone. “Zarreen will call me two or three times a week with a question about biology or chemistry, and that’s fine with me,” says Datta. The real question is:does tutoring do any good?“It’s not the magic bullet,” says educator Judith Ireson. BLearning an instrument can help children improve their linguistic (语言的) skills, and may even help people recover from memory loss after brain injury, researchers have found. These are the findings of a study by psychologists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the journal Neuropsychology. The study found that children who undergo music training have better recall ofwords than those who have none. And the longer their period of music training, the more words they recall.Led by psychologist, Dr Agnes Chan, the team studied a group of 90 schoolboys, aged 6 to 15, half of whom received music training in their school’s orchestra (乐队) for between one and five years. The other half had no training. The boys were all tested for verbal memory by reading them a list of words and asking them to remember as many as possible 10 minutes after the test, and the 30 minutes after. They were then shown a series of images, and asked to recall these. Each student was tested three times. The team found that students with music training recalled more words than the untrained students. After 30 minutes, they still keep more words in mind than the control group. In addition, there was a positive connection between the length of time the students had been learning and how well they remembered words:the longer they had been in training, the more words they recalled. But there were no differences between the two groups in recalling images. How does music help a child to remember words? Chan believes that learning music encourages the development of the part of the brain which is responsible for verbal memory. When it comes to music training, it is not the instrument or the type of music but the actual process of learning that helps verbal training, said Chan. She believes the finding could be the basis of a new approach to helping people with memory loss following brain injury.5.According to the study, the students who have learned an instrument for ________ years can remember more words.A.one B.twoC.four D.five解析:选D 细节判断题。
