2015年河南省高三高考押题测试英语(4)命题人:赵会强2015年5月第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳答案。
ASettling in to life at OxfordWhen you first arrive in Oxford, it may take a little while for you to find your way around. The university is a large organization that is fully integrated into the city and has been evolving for 800 years. Some of the first things our students do when they arrive include finding a bike(most students in Oxford find cycling is the best way to go around), setting up a bank account, getting their computer and mobile phone working, finding their department, getting to know their college and working out the best places to socialize. One of the major events you will experience shortly after “coming up”to Oxford is matriculation. Matriculation is held at the University’s Sheldonian Theatre and is the ceremony at which you are formally admitted to the university.International students are invited to an orientation day at the start of the academic year. Sessions run throughout the day that will give you practical information about living and studying in UK and introduce you to other graduate students from for all over the world who are starting their studies at Oxford at the same time as you, as well as to current Oxford graduate students and staff who will be able to help and advise you. The day covers topics such as studying and learning in the Oxford system, University services, information on living in Britain and culture differences, as well as addressing practical issues such as employment, immigration and visas, health and safety. You can choose which talks to attend and at the end of the day there is a social hour so you can meet fellow students.Another good thing to experience early on is college dining. Most colleges have a tradition of regular formal hall dinners, which consist of three or four courses, and the atmosphere of an evening out in a nicerestaurant. On some of these occasions you can invite people around to your college for dinner and then they may return the favor. In this way, you can get to know people studying your own and other subjects at the same time as visiting many of the historical college grounds and dining halls.Further information on your first few weeks at Oxford is available via the Students Gateway on our website, and you can get first-hand accounts of what life at Oxford is like by watching videos of students talking about their experiences on our Wall of 100 Faces.A. They arrived in Oxford and settled down on campus.B. They received the offer from the admission office.C. They met the staff and took some required courses.D. They experienced the matriculation in the university.22. Which is an orientation important for international students?A. It is a good chance to ask the staff for help.B. It offers practical information about living and studying.C. It helps get students’ computers hooked to the Internet.D. It can help deal with the problem of culture differences.23. “return the favor”in the passage probably means ______________.A. inviting you for dinnerB. visiting your historic college in returnC. sharing favorite videosD. providing you with some good adviceBWhen I was in college, a man named Henry worked as a custodian (看门人) in our student union building. White-haired, with a Pennsylvania Dutch accent, Henry could usually be seen in a baseball cap, a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. He was the custodian, and he was the most respected and most well-known person in the building. Everyone loved Henry, and it was because of all the implicit ways he expressed his love for everyone around him. Henry didn’t have to say, “I love you.” He lived his love.Henry was always excited when he met someone new, and he wanted to know everything about them. He felt it was important to do things for people he valued. And Henry seemed to value everyone he met. He brought in articles or cartoons for certain people, went out of his way to introduce people to each other, kept dozens of names and birthdays in his wallet so he could send cards, and helped students keep in touch with graduates who had written to him. He even assisted students who didn’t have enough money to buy their books.Henry taught me --- and many others he supported --- how to live life tothe fullest. Not by skydiving or exploring some foreign countries, but by appreciating where you are in life and valuing those around you.The funny thing is that despite all he did and taught us, Henry truly believed that he was the lucky one --- that he was the one who was gaining so much by getting to know us. But all of us who remember Henry know that we were the ones who were truly blessed. We will never forget the man who taught us that best way to say “I love you” often has little to do with the words.24. What does the word “implicit” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. silentB. properC. attractiveD. unbelievable25. According to the passage, working as a custodian in a college, Henry ______.A. made international travels to live a full lifeB. was a role model of how to be a caring personC. was busy organizing former students’ reunionsD. gathered plenty information about the needy students26. Henry was always excited to meet new people because ______.A. it would make people think highly of himB. he was the most popular person in the collegeC. it was part of his responsibility as a custodianD. he treasured everything around him in his life27. Which of the following word cannot be used to describe Henry?A. kind.B. adventurous.C. supportive.D. sympathetic.CWhen a big boat, like a cruise ship, goes through the ocean, it often creates waves. This happens when the large engines on the back of the cruise ship cause the water on the ocean’s surface move up and down violently. These waves move out from the boat in both directions. If you are captaining a smaller boat, you’d better steer clear of a ship’s wake, so that your boat is not surfing on the waves, causing it to overturn.A wave is a pattern of motion. When you look at a wave, it may appear as simply water moving across the surface of the ocean. In fact, this is false. The water is actually not moving in the same direction as the wave. While the wave itself -- the pattern of motion – is moving across the surface of the ocean, the water is actually moving in a circular motion, which brings the water molecules back to their original position. The water merely gives the appearance of moving forward. If this is confusing, think of the kind of wave you do at a baseball stadium. Viewed from a distance, the wave is clearly moving across the stadium. But the thing that makes up the wave – the people – are not moving across the stadium, they’re just moving up and down in their seats. This isjust like the water in an ocean wave. A lot of water is moving up and down, which gives water the appearance of moving along with the wave.Surfers pay a lot of attention to waves. If you’re not in an area where the waves are suitable for surfing, then you can’t surf. Usually, surfers gather in areas known for big waves – waves that rise high off the ocean’s surface. If the wave is bigger, then the surfer is often able to surf for longer distances and perform more tricks. The height of a wave is known as its amplitude ( 振幅,幅度,波幅) . If you could make a wave freeze, then you could measure the wave’s amplitude by running a tape measure from the ocean’s surface to the very peak of the wave. All waves can be measured using amplitude and wavelength. While the waves created by a boat have very small amplitude – sometimes as small as a few centimeters – the wavelength can be very short, as lots of waves are being generated. By contrast, a tsunami has very high amplitude, sometimes more than 100 feet, but a relatively long wavelength, as it’s a high wave.Waves generated in the same way can have great differences in amplitude and wavelength. For example, think back to the cruise ship. While each ship creates waves caused by the movement of the boat, the properties of each of the waves may be very different. For example, a larger cruise ship, with powerful engines, may create a wave that has high amplitude and a short wavelength. However, if the ship’s engines slow down, they may then start creating less powerful waves at a slower rate. This would cause the waves’amplitude to decrease, but its wavelength to increase.28. What does the phrase “steer clear of a cruise ship’s wake” in the 1st paragraph mean?A. keep awake while steering a shipB. get a clear view of what is aheadC. keep away from the cruise shipD. follow the cruise ship very closely29. The author gives an example of wave people do in the stadium in order to _____________.A. describe how excited people are in a basketball stadiumB. clear the confusion over measuring the wave’s amplitudeC. demonstrate how to make waves in a basketball stadiumD. explain why the water appears to move along the waves30. The last paragraph gives us the impression that ________________.A. the wave’s amplitude may vary, but its wavelength remain the sameB. the more powerful the ships engines are, the higher the waves they generateC. the amplitude of a wave depends on the direction the water moves forwardD. measuring the amplitude and wavelength of waves is not quite easy31. What is this passage mainly about?A. How waves are created and measured.B. What makes the sea water move forwards.C. Why people create waves in the stadium.D. How to steer a cruise ship in the rough sea.DAre you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn outfor the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probablyare enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love. But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That’s bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists have suspected all along. It’s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have an alternative plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution, like “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says, “Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.32. What’s the passage mainly about?A. The benefits of defensive pessimism.B. A book that has recentlybeen published.C. The dangers of being too optimistic.D. How to become successful in life.33. The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” (Para. 4) means __________.A. there is no real proofB. it is quite simple to understandC. the cost is not so highD. it’s not a dangerous thing to do34. Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?A. Whatever will be, will be.B. The glass is half full not half empty.C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.D. Every cloud has a silver lining.35. A1A report from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' Commission reveals that, due to a job market which disproportionately rewards graduates in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, more and more students are seeking degrees in business and hard-science subjects. Some institutions have responded by cutting budgets in the arts and humanities and directing those funds elsewhere. That's the wrong thing to do. The humanities study of languages, literature, history, philosophy, religion, ethics, etc.-and the arts are vital to our future. We should be investing more funds, more time and more expertise, not less, into these endeavors. What detractors(诋毁者)of the "soft" subjects miss is that the arts and humanities provide an essential framework and context for understanding the wider world. Studying the humanities strengthens the ability to communicate and work with others. It allows students to develop broad intellectual and cultural understanding; it nurtures creativity and deepens participation in public discourse and modem democracy. The commission's report points out that "at the very moment when China is seeking to adopt our model of broad education in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences as a stimulus to invention, the United States is instead narrowing our focus and abandoning our sense of what education has been and should continue to be our sense of what makes America great."These are the telling statistics: First, federal funding for helping American students include international training in their education has been cut 41 percent in four years. Second, the National Assessment of Educational Progress test shows that only less than a quarter of eighth- and 12th-grade US students are proficient in reading, writing and civics. How can we possibly equip the US for its leadership role in an increasingly connected world if we are not adequately teaching students to communicate and helping them understand and encounter diverse perspectives? If we fail to invest in the arts and humanities, our country's future leaders will not have the ability to connect on an emotional level with others. This ability is developed by studying the humanities, and in the global community this skill is not optional - it's essential. In a word, we must enthusiastically support and fund the study of the arts and humanities. For anyone concerned with how this translates into a sound economy and a sound financial future, simply recall what Steve Jobs told graduates of Stanford University in 2005: One of the most influential experiences in his brief time at Reed College was his exposure to the fine art of calligraphy(书法).It taught him the important lesson of the relationship between discipline andcreativity.1. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Business and hard-science subjects are based upon the arts and humanities.B. At present too much emphasis and investment are put on science in America.C. More students will learn the arts and humanities instead of science in the USA.D. China has spent more money in the humanities and social sciences than the USA.2. The author mentions Steve Jobs in the last paragraph to prove that _____.A. science has a close relationship with the arts and humanitiesB. investment in the arts and humanities promotes economic developmentC. calligraphy plays a determining role in Steve Jobs' accomplishmentD. Reed College supports and funds the study of the arts and humanities3. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?A. Significance of arts and humanitiesB. Key qualities of future leadersC. Decline of arts and humanitiesD. Rise and fall of hard sciences答案:1.B 2.B 3.A解析:1.B,推断题,根据第一段最后一句话:more and more students are seeking degrees in business and hard-science subjects.越来越多的学生学习理科和商业说明现在国家把重点和投资投在了这些方面。

As celebrations spread westward, fireworkslit up the night sky in towns and cities around the world, as celebrators partied on the streets. In some parts of the world, the New Year’s celebrations were, lets say, rather unusual. Inmany European countries as well as in Coney Island, New York, swimmers braved freezingwater temperatures for a dip in the ocean or lake on January 1. In Rome, Italy, divers jumpedoff the 59-foot-high Cavour bridge into the TiberRiver. Londoners rang in the New Year with amassive fireworks display with dozens of rockets lighting up the night sky. The Scots’celebration of New Year is also called “Hogmanay”. A torchlight procession led by mendressed as Vikings kicks off four days of Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland. Theprocession ends with the burning of a Viking long ship. Hogmanay is the Scottish word for thelast day of the year. Street festivals are held on each day culminating in a fireworks display. In New York, hundreds of thousands gathered to witness a huge ball with more than 30,000 lights descend at midnight. 考试时间120分钟第I卷第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)(略)第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,满分30分)AChange is everything in the case of mobile phones.Recent research indicates that the mobile phone is changing not only our culture, but our very bodies as well.First, let’s talk about culture. The difference between the mobile phone and its parent, the fixed-line phone,is that a mobile number corresponds to a person, while a landline goes to a place. If you call my mobile, you get me.If you call my fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it.This has several implications(含义).The most common one, however, and perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever,is the“meeting”influence.People no longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet.Twenty years ago,a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now,however,a night out can be arranged on the run.It is no longer“see you there at8”,but“text me around8and we’ll see where we all are.”Texting changes people as well.In their paper,“Insights into the Social and Psychological Effects of SMS(Short Message Service)Text Messaging",two British researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users:the“talkers”and the“texters”-those who prefer voice to text messages and those who prefer text to voice. They found that the mobile phone’s individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality.Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts. This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well.Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobiles have brought to body language. There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone. There is the“speakeasy”:the head is held high,in a self-confident way, chatting away. And there is the“spacemaker”:these people focus on themselves and keep out other people.Who can blame them?Phone meetings get cancelled or reformed and camera-phones intrude (侵入)on people’s privacy. So,it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous. But perhaps you needn’t worry so much. After all,it is good to talk.1.The“meeting”influence of a mobile phone refers to the fact that________.A.people can arrange their meeting place and time more flexiblyB.people have to make a firm plan about when and where to meetC.people are able to meet someone at any place and any timeD.people have to attend phone meetings than ever before22.According to the two British researchers, the Social and Psychological Effects are most likelyto be seen on________.A.talkersB.the“speakeasy”C.the“spacemaker”D.texters23.We can infer from the passage that the texts sent by texters are_________.A.showing or making knownB.well writtenC.unacceptable by othersD.shocking to others24.According to the passage, who is afraid of being heard while talking on the mobile?A.talkersB.the“speakeasy”C.the“spacemaker”D.textersBTop Four Ways to Build a Wonderful Life1.Live Below Your MeansThere will always be temptation to give up the future for immediate pleasure. We all want to buy that new piece of technology, treat ourselves to an expensive night on the town,or take out a loan for the flashy car we can’t afford. It might feel great at the time but unwise spending hurts a lot later on.Enjoy life’s simple pleasures and save as much as you can.Expensive things don’t create lasting happiness and security.Careful spending will bring you greater leisure and enjoyment in the long run.2.Put Your Money to WorkSaving is great, but to make the most of your money you need to put it to work.Good investments can be the difference between retiring in your40’s or in your60’s.A post today at The Simple Dollar really got me thinking.According to Trent’s estimates,if a person in their early20’s invests 20%of their income in an S&P index fund, the interest they earn will equal their current salary when they reach their early40’s.They could retire without a drop in income!Wise investing is the surest path to financial independence and it’s something everyone can work on.It’s definitely an area I’ll be devoting more attention to in my personal life.cate YourselfTo be happy we need continuous growth. The best way to grow is life-long education. This doesn’t mean you need to pursue a doctorate or spend2hours reading every day.Self-education can be anything that takes you out of your comfort zone. The important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and cation builds over time.It might feel like the bits of wisdom you acquire don’t mean much, but over the years they add up to form a wiser, kinder, more interesting person.4.Develop Lasting Personal RelationshipsSuppose you had everything you wanted.Would you be happy without anyone to share it with? The personal relationships we develop with friends and family members are the greatest source of happiness in our lives.Don’t forget about them.Taking the time to cultivate and enjoy personal relationships is essential to long-term happiness.Without the people you care about you’ll probably be miserable,no matter how successful you become.25.According to the passage,in order to achieve financial independence after retirement,we’dbetter________.A.get along well with our family and friendsB.bring ourselves leisure as well as enjoymentC.invest our money wisely when we are youngD.learn some new skills and try to find a new job26.From the passage we can infer that some people try to________.A.gain happiness by buying themselves expensive thingsB.save everything they can to help those in needC.devote more attention to their personal lifeD.take out a loan to promote technology27.The author of the passage may agree that the key to self-education is________.A.gaining as many degrees as possibleB.being open to new ideas and viewsC.only focusing on very big eventsD.creating long-term happiness28.The above passage is written in order to________.A.explain what true happiness is aboutB.offer ways to achieve a happy and successful lifeC.introduce different definitions about D.persuade readers to find out the meaning of lifeCIn the countries of South and Southeast Asia, the elephant has been an important part of the culture, economy and religion for centuries. And nowhere more so than in Thailand.Unlike its African cousin, the Asian elephant is easily domesticated(驯化).The rare so-called white elephants have actually lent the power of royalty to its rulers, and until the1920s the national flag was a white elephant on a red background. To the early Western visitors, the country's romantic name was“Land of the White Elephant".Today, however, the story is very different.Out of work and out of land, the Thai elephant struggles for survival in a nation that no longer needs it.The elephant has found itself more or less deserted by previous owners who have moved on to a different economic world and a society in the western part. And while the elephant's problems began many years ago,now it has a very low national advantage. How does the national symbol turn into ignored animals? It is a story of worse environment and the changing lives of the Thais themselves.According to Richard Lair,Thailand's expert on the Asian elephant and author of the report Gone Astray,at the turn of the last century, there may well have been as many as100,000national elephants in the country. In the north of Thailand alone,it was estimated(估计)that more than20,000elephants were employed in transport,1,000of them alone on the road between the cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Saen. This was at a time when90percent of Thailand was still forest---a habitat that not only supported the animals but also made them necessary to carry goods and people.Nothing ploughs through thick forest better than lots of sure-footed elephants.By1950the elephant population had dropped, but still to the number of13,397.However, today there are probably no more than3,800,with another l,350wandering free in the national parks. But now,Thailand's forest covers only20percent of the land. This deforestation(采伐森林)is the central point of the elephant's difficult situation, for it has effectively put the animals out of work. This century,as the road network grew, the elephant's role as a beast of burden decreased.29.What can we know about African elephants from the passage?A.It is of little value to domesticate them.B.It is hard to domesticate them.C.They are living a better life than Asian elephants.D.Their fate is quite similar to that of Asian elephants.30.Thailand was once called"Land of the White Elephant"because________.A.white elephant was a national symbol until the1920sB.white elephant is rarely seen and thus very specialC.white elephant has helped kings to gain the ruling authorityD.this name was so romantic that it was popular among visitors31.Why is the Thai elephant"out of work",according to the author?A.Because there are too many elephants but too few jobs.B.Because the elephants can't do labor work any longer.C.Because the government pays little attention to the problem.D.Because the elephants are no longer useful to their owners.32.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the elephant population at various times?A.There were100,000domesticated elephants at the turn of the last century.B.20,000elephants were employed in transport in Thailand at the turn of the century.C.By1950the elephant population in Thailand has been quite small.D.Today the elephant population is estimated at5,150.DWhen I heard the piano,I walked to Mrs.Windsor’s house and waited outside as I always did. That meant she was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell.I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing.“Almost anything”,I sighed dejectedly.I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it.It didn’t come to me naturally.I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends, cutting up old clothes to make dresses that performers wear in plays, and building scenery out of old things we found. But Mrs.Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free,so I felt my duty to try.The door opened and Wendy Barton came out.I walked in,sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music.“Hello,”I heard a voice behind me say softly.I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me,eating an apple. But before I could make any response,Mrs.Windsor walked into the room in her usual urgent manner and announced,“Jennifer, this is my niece,Pasha.Pasha, this is Jennifer.Pasha will be giving you your lesson today.I’m up to my ears in something else!”she then exited to the kitchen.Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench.“What piece do you like best?”she asked.“What do you mean?”I asked.“They’re all the same to me.I don’t know.“You mean you don’t have a favorite?”“No,not really.”Pasha looked at me,rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play.I arranged my fingers on the keys and studied the notes on the page for a moment. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements.I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist. After about a page or two,Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause.“What are you hearing in the music?”I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant.“Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?”“I guess I’ve never thought about it before.I don’t know.”“Here, let me try and you listen,”Pasha advised. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play.“See,it begins here beside some kind of river.Hear the water flowing beside you?”Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys.“Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.”A carefree, happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers.“Oh,but she slips!”The music changed.“And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream.Quickly, the princess’s horse sees her plight(困境),”Pasha continued, and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and swears she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirt from now on.”Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.“Aren’t you the girl who tells the stories?”she asked.“I guess.I do tell a lot of stories.”“Oh,yes! All the kids talk about them.I’ve heard about you.Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music. That’s all there is to it.”“I’ve never thought it that way.”“Let’s try another one, shall we?”Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.33.The underlined word“dejectedly”in Paragraph1is closest in meaning to_______.A.nervouslyB.desperatelyC.impatientlyD.unhappily34.Jennifer got lost in thought when she________.A.played the piano with Pasha for the first timeB.listened to Pasha tell her story about the princessC.remembered happier times of writing stories and acting them outD.discovered that Mrs.Windsor’s niece would be giving the piano lesson35.By describing herself as a mechanical pianist, the author showed______.A.she could remember the notes in a short timeB.she was playing the piano without thinkingC.Pasha was showing off her skillsD.it had been a long time since she played last time第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

ACopycat ElephantsYou may have seen a talking parrot on a TV show, in a movie, or even in someone’s home. The parrot has learned to copy sounds that people make. Birds are not the only animals that can copy the noises they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list of copycats.Dr. Joyce Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises made by Mlaika after sunset. Mlaika was a 10-year-old African elephant.Mlaika lived near a highway. Dr. Poole says, “I could not tell t he difference between Mlaika’s call and the distant truck noise.” She and other scientists studied Mlaika’s sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by. Why would Mlaika copy trucks that she heard going by on the highway? Animals that are able to copy sounds may enjoy practicing new sounds. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant would copy the sound of a truck.“Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant,” Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian elephants make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Poole says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, “They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in contact.”Parrots, dolphins, humans, and elephants show that being a copycat is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.21. According to the passage, what does Mlaika copy?A. The sound of people.B. The sound of trucks.C. The sound of Calimero.D. The sound of birds.22. Why is Calimero mentioned in the passage?A. To clarify the meaning of copycat elephants.B. To show the cleverness of African elephants.C. To add another example of copycat elephants.D. To introduce a special life skill of Asian elephants.23. From paragraph 4, we can know ________.A. how long it takes for an elephant to learn a new soundB. why the African elephant can make chirping soundsC. why the Asian elephants make noises after sunsetD. how Asian and African elephants are alike24. According to the passage, why do some animals like to be copycats?A. To keep in touch with nature.B. To please people and other animals.C. To make new friends and keep old ones.D. To avoid the danger from the outside world.BMatthew Henson—Arctic ExplorerIn 1880, fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson loved to hear sailors tell tales of their exciting lives at sea. The travel, the adventure, the danger, and the steady pay were all attracting young Henson. One day, he found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. With the help of the ship’s captain and other members of the crew, Henson learned mathematics, navigation, history, geography, and many other subjects. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well educated and had become an excellent seaman.Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him. The shop owner knew about hi s young employee’s skills and experience on ocean journeys, so he introduced Peary to Henson.Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and smart seaman. Peary soon made Henson his assistant, and they became close friends. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true. Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time. The cold, wind, and ice were worse than either of them had ever imagined. In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship in the arctic cold had made them suffer a lot. This would be their last chance. With four Inuitguides, they made a mad rush straight across the ice toward the pole. Peary’s feet were injured and he had to be pulled on a dogsled. In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the snow.In later years, Robert Peary and Henson were greatly honored for their achievements. Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in heroes’ graves not far apart in the Arlington National Cemetery.25. In paragraph1, the author shows how Henson became ________.A. a skilled seamanB. a highly educated captainC. employed in a restaurantD. interested in helping others26. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us ________.A. how Matthew Henson met Robert PearyB. why Matthew Henson went to the hat shopC. why Matthew Henson stopped working on the Katie HindsD. how Robert Peary knew that Matthew Henson had sea experience27. On their trip to the North Pole, Henson and Peary could best be compared to ________.A. treasure hunters seeking big fortunesB. generals seeking power over another countryC. soldiers going to war to fight for their freedomD. fighters performing a task in an unknown land28. The information presented in this passage is mainly organized ________.A. by cause and effectB. by comparing and contrastingC. in the order that the events happenedD. with main ideas and supporting examplesCHuman beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片). It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronicbrain. Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will do everything for us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?29. From paragraph 1, we can know ________.A. why early human beings cut skin from dead animalsB. how early human beings discovered the toolsC. what early human beings used the tools forD. what food early human beings stored30. The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it ________.A. was very important to the development of mankindB. led to the invention of machines in the early timeC. developed cooking abilities of mankindD. was one of the first tools of mankind31. The silicon chip is mentioned in the passage to ________.A. show the changes of toolsB. introduce a new kind of toolC. give an example of using toolsD. compare the effects of two kinds of tools32. At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is ________.A. out of orderB. less colorfulC. hard to predictD. full of meaningsDNo one should be forced to wear a uniform under any circumstance. Uniforms are controlling the human spirit and totally unnecessary in a democratic(民主的) society. Uniforms tell the world that the person who wears one has no value as an individual but only lives to function as a part of the whole. The individual in a uniform loses all self-worth.There are those who say that wearing a uniform gives a person a sense of identification with a larger, more important concept. What could be more important than the individual himself? If an organization is so weak that it must rely on cloth and buttons to inspire its members, that organization has no right to continue its existence.Others say that the practice of making persons wear uniforms, say in school, gets rid of all envy and competition in a matter of dress, such that a poor person who cannot afford good-quality clothing is not to be looked down upon by a wealthyperson who wears expensive clothing. Those persons ignore the concepts as freedom of choice, motivation, and individuality. If all persons were to wear the same clothing, why would anyone struggle to be better? It is only a short step from forcing everyone to drive the same car, have the same type of food. When this happens, all motivation to improve one’s life is removed. Why would parents bother to work hard so that their children could have a better life than they had when they know that their children are going to be forced to have exactly the same life as they had?Uniforms also hurt the economy(经济). Right now, billions of dollars are spent on the fashion industry yearly. Thousands of people are employed in designing, creating, and marketing different types of clothing. If everyone were forced to wear uniforms, artistic personnel would be unnecessary. Salesmen would be extra as well. Why bother to sell the only items that are available? The wearing of uniforms would destroy the fashion industry which in turn would have a wave effect on such industries as advertising and sales promotion. Without advertising, newspapers, magazines, and television would not be able to remain in business. Our entire information and entertainment industries would collapse.33. Why does the author discuss forcing everyone to buy the same car or eat the same food?A. To show that freedom of choice is absolute in modern society.B. To suggest what would happen if uniforms became compulsory.C. To predict the way the society will be in the next few generations.D. To show that the government has too much control over people’s lives.34. The last word of the passage “collapse” probably means ________.A. failB. riseC. disappearD. struggle35 The author’s primary purpose in writing this passage was to ________.A. show that uniforms are not possible in a democratic societyB. advise the government to change the rules of wearing uniformsC. advocate stronger governmental controls on the wearing of uniformsD. convince the reader that uniforms have more disadvantages than advantages第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

2015年高考押题英语卷2第一部分阅读理解第一节阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在题卡上将该项涂黑。
AExercise seems to be good for the human brain, with many recent studies suggesting that regular exercise improves memory and thinking skills. But an interesting new study asks whether the apparent cognitive benefits from exercise are real or just a placebo effect —that is, if we think we will be “smarter” after exercise, do our brains respond accordingly? The answer has significant implications for any of us hoping to use exercise to keep our minds sharp throughout our lives. While many studies suggest that exercise may have cognitive benefits, recently some scientists have begun to question whether the apparently beneficial effects of exercise on thinking might be a placebo effect. So researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign decided to focus on expectations, on what people anticipate that exerci se will do for thinking. If people’s expectations jibe (吻合) closely with the actual benefits, then at least some of those improvements are probably a result of the placebo effect and not of exercise. For the new study, which was published last month in PLOS One, the researchers recruited 171 people through an online survey system, they asked half of these volunteers to estimate by how much a stretching and toning regimens (拉伸运动) performed three times a week might improve various measures of thinking. The other volunteers were asked the same questions, but about a regular walking program. In actual experiments, stretching and toning program generally have little if any impact on people’s cognitive skills. Walking, on the other hand, seems to substantially improve thinking ability. But the survey respondents believed the opposite, estimating that the stretching and toning program would be more beneficial for the mind than walking. The estimates of benefits from walking were lower. These data, while they do not involve any actual exercise, are good news for people who do exercise. “The results from our study suggest that the benefits of aerobic exercise are not a placebo effect,” said Cary Stothart, a graduate student in cognitive psychology at Florida State University, who led the study. If expectations had been driving the improvements in cognition seen in studies after exercise, Mr. Stothart said, then people should have expected walking to be more beneficial for thinking than stretching. They didn’t, implying that the changes in the brain and thinking after exercise are physiologically genuine. The findings are strong enough to suggest that exercise really does change the brain and may, in the process, improve thinking, Mr. Stothart said. That conclusion should encourage scientists to look even more closely into how, at a molecular level, exercise remodels the human brain, he said. It also should encourage the rest of us to move, since the benefits are, it seems, not imaginary, even if they are in our head.1. Why did the researchers at the two universities conduct the research?A. To discover the placebo effect in the exercise.B. To prove the previous studies have a big drawback.C. To test whether exercise can really improve cognition.D. To encourage more scientists to get involved in the research.2. What can we know about the research Cary Stothart and his team carried out?A. They employed 171 people to take part in the actual exercise.B. The result of the research removed the recent doubt of some scientists.C. The participants thought walking had a greater impact on thinking ability.D. Their conclusion drives scientists to do research on the placebo effect.3. What might be the best title for the passage?A. Is it necessary for us to take exercise?B. How should people exercise properly?C. What makes us smarter during exercise?D. Does exercise really make us smarter?BThe current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people, including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Ebola is a deadly virus —about 60 percent of people infected with it have died. How is Ebola doing its harm? When a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus damages the body’s immune (免疫的) cells, which defend against infection, said a researcher at Lancaster University. But if a person’s immune system can stand up to this attack, then he is more likely to survive the disease. The patients that survive it best are those who don’t get such a bad disadvantage in immune system. But if the body isn’t able to get rid of this attack, then the immune system becomes less able to regulate (调节) itself. This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control, leading to a drop in blood pressure, multi-organ failure and eventually death. What are the common symptoms of the disease?Fever. Headache. Joint and muscle aches. Weakness. Diarrhea. V omiting. Stomach pain. Lack of appetite. Chills. Rash. Redness in the eyes. Hiccups. Cough. Sore throat. Chest pain. Difficult breathing or swallowing. Bleeding inside and outside of the body. How to prevent the spread of Ebola?Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and fluids of an infected patient. We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing, bedding, and needles used by them. Avoid areas where infections have been reported. For now, the disease has only been confirmed in central and West Africa, four cases in America and Europe. Avoid eating wild-caught bush meat. Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via animals, probably through the meat of primates(灵长类). If you’re in an area where the disease has been reported, avoid purchasing, eating, or handling wild game to stay on the safe side.Wear protective medical clothing if you’re around infected patients. Extreme caution is necessary. Hospital workers must use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be worn at all times if y ou’re around infected patients. How Do People Survive Ebola?Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. Although in the minority, some people do recover from infection. Our suggestions include:Maintain your electrolytes (电解质) and body liquid. Sports drinks can be used. Monitor your blood pressure and control it if necessary. Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign of infection. Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment. Quickly address any symptoms o f infection. Be honest about when and where you’re feeling pain.4. Ebola causes the death of a human being by ________.A. attacking him with high feverB. regulating his immune systemC. damaging his immune cellsD. harming all his organs directly5. What is NOT mentioned as the symptom of Ebola?A. Fever and chills.B. Swallowing difficulty.C. Loss of blood.D. High blood pressure.6. In order not to be infected by Ebola, we should _________.A. have the clothing of the infected cleanedB. avoid eating wild animals like monkeysC. not travel to Africa, America or EuropeD. stay at home without going anywhere7. It is true that ________.A. a certain number of people survive EbolaB. human has found a special cure for EbolaC. oxygen can save infected people’s livesD. low blood pressure is surely caused by EbolaCThe term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was the production of goods with machines like steam engines, which was followed by the second industrial revolution that introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution —the use of electronics and IT in production.Industry 4.0 is a high-tech project, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing (制造业). The basic principle of Industry 4.0 is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems, we are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that can control each other automatically. The goal is the Smart Factory, which adapts well and uses resources efficiently as well as linking customers and business partners with great intelligence. Technological basis are the Internet systems and advanced factories. Experts believe that Industry 4.0 could be a reality in about 10 to 20 years. So, what effects does this change have on the classic manufacturing? According to an expert, “it is highly likely that the world of production will become more and more networked until everything is connected with ev erything else.” Networks and processes have so far been limited to one factory. But in the time of Industry 4.0, the boundaries (界限) of individual factories will most likely no longer exist. Instead, they will be lifted in order to inter-connect multiple factories or even geographical regions. How is an Industry 4.0 factory different from a today’s factory? In current industry environment, providing high-end quality service or product with the least cost is the key to success. Factories are trying to increase their profit as much as possible. In the time of Industry 4.0, various data sources are available to provide worthwhile information about different aspects of the factory. Using data for understanding the current condition and checking faults and failures is a natural thing. The sharing of information around the clock and around the globe will enable these connected systems to manage themselves independently, work more efficiently and identify any errors quickly. The good news is that Europe is much better prepared for the Industry 4.0 revolution than one might think. Europe will position itself as a pioneer in the fourth revolution. Industry 4.0 is a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government. Meanwhile, in the U.S., some companies are also working hard on it. But the success of industry depends on whether business and politics can work together. It’s not only politics that needs to help open the door for Industry 4.0. Every company is advised to seize the new digital opportunities.8. What marks the coming of Industry 4.0?A. Steam engines.B. Mass production.C. Use of electronics.D. Intelligent networks.9. Industry 4.0 will probably result in ________ in the world of manufacturing.A. production limited to an individual factoryB. everything connected with everything elseC. networks and processes no longer existingD. classic factories stopping their competition10What’s the meaning of the underlined part in Para. 4?A. Popular book picks have been Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird,Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying, and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.“One City One Book” programs take the idea of a localized book discussion club and expand it to cover a whole city. The first such program was “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” in 1998,started by Nancy Pearl atSeattle Public Library’s Washington Center for the Book. The book chosen for the program was The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, written in 1991.Other cities copied the idea, and the Library of Congress listed 404 programs occurring in 2007.Each city’s program has its own goals; These typically include building a sense of community and promoting literacy. Nancy Pearl warns against expecting too much from a program:“Keep in mind that this i s a library program,it’s not an exercise in civics, and that it’s not intended to have literature cure the racial divide. This is about a work of literature.”Programs typically involve more than having everyone read the same book. Some other activities that have been included are:book discussion sessions, scholarly lectures on the book or related topics,a visit by the author, exhibits, related arts programming (especially showing a movie of the book if there is one),and integration into school curricula. In Boston the “One City One Story” program used shorter stories and distributed tens of thousands of free copies of the story over the course of a month.American Library Association puts out a detailed step-by-step guide on how to organize a local program, including the critical step of picking the one book. The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress tracks all known programs and the books they have used.12.“One City One Book” programs________.A.ask everyone in a city to donate one book B.can rid a city of racial divide through readingC.choose short stories for people to read D.encourage everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book 13.We know from the second paragraph that “One City One Book” programs________.A.became popular very quickly B.have been held more than 400 times in SeattleC.were sponsored by the Library of Congress D.reached its peak in 200714.We can infer from the third paragraph that Nancy Pearl________.A.expects much from the programs B.doesn’t expect that the programs would run so wellC.has a practical attitude towards the programs Dbelieves the programs will push forward community building 15.What kind of role does American Library Association play in the programs?A.It picks out the city which runs the programs well. B.It gives free books to the host city.C.It gives a practical guide to the programs. D.It keeps a record of all known programs.第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

For anyone concerned with how this translates into a sound economy and a sound financial future, simply recall what Steve Jobs told graduates of Stanford University in 2005: One of the most influential experiences inhis brief time at Reed College was his exposure to the fine art of calligraphy(书法).It taught him the important lesson of the relationship between discipline and creativity.1. Rise and fall of hard sciencesA2Fuel Cell Technology for CarsFill her up with hydrogen? That's what someCalifornia motorists may be saying soon, as car makers tryto speed up production of zero emission(零排放)cars tomeet state requirements in the near future.Beneath the skin of this ordinary looking HondasFCX Concept Vehicle sits an electro-chemical reactor: ahand built, astronomically expensive power plant knownas a fuel cell. It's expected to be running ordinary family cars on California's roads within three years. So what exactly is a fuel cell, anyway? Why are governments, private businesses and academic institutions cooperating to develop and produce them? A fuel cell, very simply described, is a power generator, making electricity through the combination of hydrogen and oxygen. Fuel cells generate electrical power quietly and efficiently, without pollution, unlike power sources that use fossil fuels, the only by-products from an operating fuel cell are heat and water. To be more technical about it, a hydrogen atom with its one electron, attempts to pass through a fuel cell membrane(膜)to unite with an oxygen atom. The membrane allows only the hydrogen proton(质子)to pass through, forcing its electron to run around the membrane to catch up with the proton on the other side. This creates electricity, water, and heat, but no exhaust emissions. If the fuel cell is powered with pure hydrogen, it has the potential to be up to 80-percent efficient, That is, it turns 80 percent of the energy content of the hydrogen into electrical energy. However, we still need to turn the electrical energy into mechanical work. This is accomplished by the electric motor. A reasonable number for the efficiency of the motor is about 80 percent. So we have 80-percent efficiency in generating electricity, and 80-percent efficiency turning it into mechanical power. That gives an overall efficiency ofabout64 percent. Honda's FCX concept vehicle reportedly has 60-percent energy efficiency, which is twice or even three times more efficient than usual cars. But in spite of all the advantages described above, experts say, "We still have technical challenges getting this extremely complex system to work properly, the way customers expect it to work. There are challenges in using new fuels, and providing the new fuel basic facilities. And before fuel cell vehicles hit the road, there will have to be a network of hydrogen stations that will allow drivers to fill up with the flammable gas, under 36-hundred pounds of pressure."4. What can be inferred from California's "zero emissions policy"?A. New cars with fuel cell technology will surely become much cheaper.B. By carrying out the policy, traffic will not be so busy as it is now.C. The quality of life in California will improve once this policy is in effect.D. With facilities of new kinds, more local employment will be created.5. What does the phrase "power plant" refer to?A. A power device generating electricity.B. A power station providing electricity.C. A power component consuming electricity.D. A power engine using electricity.6. One of the reasons why fuel cell powered vehicles are superior is that . .A. they give out almost no water or heatB. they run faster and more smoothlyC. they give out almost no noiseD. they turn 64% of the energy into electricity7. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Customers will not think it a good idea to develop fuel cell technology.B. It is still not very easy to speed up production of zero emission cars.C. We can't ignore the financial problems to build a network of hydrogen stations.D. We still have much difficulty turning all the chains of the business into reality.A3When DeKalb Walcott III was just 8 years old, his father, a Chicago fire chief, let him tag along on a call. DeKalb says a lot of kids idolized basketball player Michael Jordan when he was growing up in Chicago in the 1990s. Not him."I wanted to be like DeKalb Walcott Jr.," he says of his father. So when his dad asked if he wanted to go on that call with him when he was 8, DeKalb was excited. "I'm jumping up and down, saying, "Mom, can I go? Can I go?' "The experience changed DeKalb’s life, he tells his dad on a visit to Story Corps. "My eyes got big from the moment the alarm went o ff." the younger DeKalb says. “This is the life that I want to live someday.”Now 27, the younger DeKalb is living that life. He became a firefighter at 21 and went to work alongside his dad at the Chicago Fire Department. Before his father retired, the pair even went out on a call together — father supervising(监督)son."You know, it's everything for me to watch you grow," his father says. But he also recalls worrying about one particular fire that his son faced."I received a phone call that night. And they said, 'Well, your son was at this fire.' I said, 'OK, which way is this conversation going to go?' “DeKalb Walcott Jr. recalls."And they said, 'but he's OK. And he put it out all by himself. Everybody here was proud of him.'"And the word went around, 'Who was out there managing that fire? Oh, that's Walcott! That's Walcottup there!' So, you know, moments like that, it's heaven on Earth for a dad."DeKalb Walcott Jr. retired in 2009. The younger DeKalb says he's proud of being a second-generation firefighter. "You know, it makes me look forward to fatherhood as well, because I'm definitely looking forward to passing that torch down to my son."8. DeKalb Walcott Jr is proud to be a second-generation firefighter.B. DeKalb Walcott III wants his son to become a firefighter too.C. DeKalb Walcott Jr wants to pass the torch to DeKalb Walcott III.D. DeKalb Walcott III is proud that his son has become an excellent firefighter.A4Engineers should embrace(接受)the arts, Sir John O'Reilly, a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, argued in a lecture.About 59% of engineering companies in the IET's 2014 survey feared skill shortages could threaten(威胁)business."There is nothing as creative as engineering," Sir John told the reporter. He says science, technology, engineering and mathematics - often known as "Stem" subjects, are vital for a modern knowledge economy. But there is a massive shortfall in the number of recruits(招聘)- with a recent study by the Royal Academy of Engineering saying the UK needs to increase by as much as 50% the number of Stem graduates it produces.Delivering this year's Mountbatten Lecture at the Royal Institution, Sir John argued that engineers should recognise the role of the arts in their work - among other benefits; this could attract more people into the profession. The lecture, Full Steam Ahead for Growth, advocated a wider adoption -- Steam, or science, technology, engineering, arts and maths. Engineers should embrace the arts as being key to creativity and an important component of innovation(创新), crucial to creating new products and boosting future competitiveness, he argued. "Engineering and technology is an increasingly diverse and creative field," said Sir John. Some university engineering departments already cooperated with art schools to develop understanding, he told the reporter. In particular he mentioned Cranfield University's Centre for Creative CompetitiveDesign and Imperial College's work with the Royal College of Art. The two sets of people could work well together and more emphasis on the creative side of engineering could improve the success of products, he said."Aesthetics(美学) is part of it," he told the reporter, adding that Apple's iPod was not the first digital media player, nor the only one that worked - but it came to dominate the market "because it was nice to have".Sir John said he was not suggesting universities started requiring A-level art from engineering applicants - the key subjects for admission would continue to be maths and the sciences. But an emphasis on creative skills would help "broaden the pool and attract more people in".12. According to the lecture Full Steam Ahead for Growth, _______.A. engineers should cooperate with arts majorsB. Accepting the arts could attract more people into engineeringC. engineers should realize arts play the most important part in their workD. engineering and technology is as diverse and creative as before13. By giving the example of Apple's iPod, Sir John intends to _______.A. stress the importance of artsB. stress the importance of marketingC. stress the importance of communicationD. stress the importance of science and technology14. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. More university students should study arts instead of engineering.B. Engineering and technology is increasingly different and unrelated fields.C. The IET's skills survey raised concerns about the number of recruits to engineering.D. Students from some university engineering departments have already transferred to art schools15. What is the passage mainly about?A. Lack of creativity makes it difficult for the engineering major to find a satisfactory job.B. The key subjects for engineering majors remain to be maths and the sciences rather than arts.C. University engineering departments should cooperate with art schools to improve the success of products.D. Engineering needs to emphasize its creative side to encourage more young people to choose it as a career.B1Exercise seems to be good for the human brain, with many recent studies suggesting that regular exercise improves memory and thinking skills. But an interesting new study asks whether the apparent cognitive benefits from exercise are real or just a placebo effect — th at is, if we think we will be “smarter” after exercise, do our brains respond accordingly? The answer has significant implications for any of us hoping to use exercise to keep our minds sharp throughout our lives. While many studies suggest that exercise may have cognitive benefits, recently some scientists have begun to question whether the apparently beneficial effects of exercise on thinking might be a placebo effect. So researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigndecided to focus on expectations, on what people anticipate that exercise will do for thinking. In actual experiments, stretching and toning program generally have little if an y impact on people’s cognitive skills. Does exercise really make us smarter?B2The current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people, including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Hospital workers must use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be worn at all times if you’re around infected patients. Quickly address any symptoms of infection. It is true that ________.A. a certain number of people survive EbolaB. human has found a special cure for EbolaC. oxygen can save infected people’s livesD. low blood pressure is surely caused by EbolaB3The term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution. The first such program was “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” in 1998,started by Nancy Pearl at Seattle Public Library’s Washington Center for the Book. The book chosen for the program was The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, written in 1991.Other cities copied the idea, and the Library of Congress listed 404 programs occurring in 2007.Each city’s program has its own goals; These typically include building a sense of community and promoting literacy. Nancy Pearl warns against expecting too much from a program:“Keep in mind that this is a library program,it’s not an exercise in civics, and that it’s not intended to have literature cure the racial divide. The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress tracks all known programs and the books they have used.12.“One City One Book” p rograms________.A.ask everyone in a city to donate one bookB.can rid a city of racial divide through readingC.choose short stories for people to readD.encourage everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book13.We know from the second p aragraph that “One City One Book” programs________.A.became popular very quicklyB.have been held more than 400 times in SeattleC.were sponsored by the Library of CongressD.reached its peak in 200714.We can infer from the third paragraph that Nancy Pearl________.A.expects much from the programsB.doesn’t expect that the programs would run so wellC.has a practical attitude towards the programsD.believes the programs will push forward community building15.What kind of role does American Library Association play in the programs?A.It picks out the city which runs the programs well.B.It gives free books to the host city.C.It gives a practical guide to the programs.D.It keeps a record of all known programs.第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

A(山东省青岛市20XX届高三下学期第二次模拟考试)I was sure that I was to be killed.I became terribly nervous. I fumbled(摸索) in my pockets to see if there were any cigarettes, which had escapedtheir search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches, they had taken those. I looked through the bars at the guard. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him “Have you got a light?” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes unconsciously locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don’t know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness, perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hardnot to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn’t want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and caused a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.I kept smiling at him, now thinking of him as a person and not just a guard. "Do you have kids?" he asked. “Yes, here, here.”I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes filled with tears. I said that I feared that I’d never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the prison, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.21. What had happened to the man before?A. He had been badly treated.B. He had killed someone.C. He had been searched.D. He had been forbidden to get in touch with anyone.22. Why did the man want to smoke cigarettes?A. Because he was sure he was to be killed.B. Because he wanted to ease his nervousness.C. Because he wanted to talk to the guard.D. Because he was used to smoking cigarettes.23. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. The man was a heavy smoker.B. The man smiled to please the guard.C. The guard set the man free with permission.D. The man hadn’t thought the guard would set him free.24. What do you think finally saved the man’s life?A. The smile.B. The cigarette.C. The tears.D. The wallet.BSome people think if you are happy, you are blind to reality. But when we research it, happiness actually raises every single business and educational outcome for the brain. How did we missthis? Why do we have these social misunderstandings about happiness? Because we assumed you were average. When we study people, scientists are often interested in what the average is.Many people think happiness is genetic. That’s only half the story, because the average person does not fight their genes. When we stop studying the average and begin researching positive outliers —people who are above average for a positive aspect like optimism or intelligence—a wildly different picture appears. Our daily decisions and habits have a huge impact upon both our levels of happiness and success.Scientifically, happiness is a choice. It is a choice about where your single processor brain will devote its limited resources as you process the world. If you scan for the negative first, your brain really has no resources left over to see the things you are grateful for or the meaning embedded(嵌入) in your work. But if you scan the world for the positive, you start to acquire an amazing advantage.I wrote the cover story for the Harvard Business Review magazine on “Happiness Leads to Profits.” Based on my article called “Positive Intelligence” and my research in The Happiness Advantage, I summarized our researched conclusion: the single greatest advantage in the modern economy is a happy and busy workforce.A decade of research in the business world proves that happiness raises nearly every business and educational outcome: increasing sales by 37%, productivity by 31%, and accuracy on tasks by 19%, as well as a number of health and quality-of-life improvements.25. The underlined word “this” in the first paragraph refers to.A. the fact that people are happyB. the connection between happiness and educational outcomeC. the fact that people often misunderstand happinessD. the fact that most people are average26. What can we learn from the passage?A. Scientists are only interested in what the average is.B. You can choose to be happy or not.C. The average are not happy at all.D. Our decisions and habits have nothing to do with happiness.27. Why does the writer mention his articles and research?A. To advertise himself.B. To arouse the readers’ interest.C. To support his point about happiness.D. To attract the readers to read his articles.28. What is the author’s purpose of writing this article?A. To explain what is happiness.B. To describe the misunderstandings about happiness.C. To show people the importance of happiness.C(河南省洛阳市20XX届高三第二次统一考试)It is 7 am and the alarm is going off. You know you have to be out of bed to catch thebus. But the urge to bury yourself in the bed is ever so strong. Sounds familiar? Why is it thatteens find it difficult to get themselves out of bed in time every morning or stay sharp andfocused during the first couple of hours of school?During adolescence, the body goes through many changes and this includes a shift in sleeppatterns. Researchers from MIT have been tracking the body’s need for sleep in teenagers. They found that though adolescents need as much as 9.5 hours of sleep a day, they get to bedlater and later with each passing year. In fact, the sleep cycle shifts later by as much as 12 to18 minutes each year between the ages of 10 and 20! So by the time a 10-year-old who sleepsat 8 pmgrows to be 17 or 18, their body naturally wants to stay up till 10:30 or 11 pm.According to researchers, this is because of a hormone called melatonin(褪黑激素)that is secreted(分泌)by the pineal gland - a tiny structure deep inside the brain. Melatonin regulates the body’s natural day-night rhythms. It causes a person to become sleepy by lowering theirbody’s core temperature. In teens, melatonin is secreted much later in the evening andcontinues to increase throughout the night. This makes it difficult for teens to fall asleep earlieras they did in their younger years. Likewise, the effect of melatonin continues until much laterin the morning, making it hard for them to wake up early.A study found that at least one in four teens is tired and falls asleep in school at least oncea week. During sleep, important body functions and brain activities happen. So how can teenagers get their sleep enough? The American Association of Pediatrics(AAP)recommends that middle and high schools should start later - not before 8:30 am. This should give teens some more time to sleep at night.29. From paragraph 2, we can learn that if you sleep late, the next day you should ________.A. stay sharpB. skip breakfastC. get up lateD. stay up late30. What d oes the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?A. The students want to stay up.B. The shifts of sleeping cycle.C. The pineal gland secrets melatonin.D. The adolescents sleep late.31. The teens go to sleep later than before because ________.A. melatonin is secreted much laterB. melatonin regulates the sleep timeC. they sleep a lot in the daytimeD. they need to finish their homework32. According to AAP’s recommendation, middle and high schools should _________.A. let teens sleep in the dayB. let the students be activeC. delay the start timeD. start later at 8:00 amD(河南省洛阳市20XX届高三第二次统一考试)Common Sense Media is a non-profit group in the United States that studies child ren’s use of media and technology. And almost 60% said it has hurt their writing skills. Many teachers think it has negatively affectedstudents’ ideas about boys and girls’ relationship. Many also think it en courages aggression andanti-social behavior. Teachers who describe themselves-as uncomfortable with new technologieswere more likely than other teachers to see destructive effects of media use on socialdevelopment. But not all effects of media use were seen as bad. Almost two thirds of teachers said it alsohelped the students’ability to find information quickly and efficiently. And one third said using entertainment media has helped their students to multitask (执行多任务)effectively. Only 25% said it just has hurt them. Teachers who consider themselves as tech savvy(懂行的人)were more likely than others to see an advantage to students’ creativity from the use ofentertainment media.

Conflicts with others are common in everyday life.【思路点拨】(1)本题为半开放作文,要求学生介绍事情经过、冲突原因以及避免冲突的做法。
(3)内容要点:碰撞(bump into) 争执(quarrel)关系紧张(tense relationship) 过错(fault) 该受到责备(be to blame)过分关注输赢(care too much about winning and losing)避免冲突(avoid conflicts) 设身处地为他人着想(put ourselves in others place )【参考范文】Conflicts with others are common in everyday life. During the basketball game yesterday afternoon, Su Hua and Li Jiang bumped into each other, trying to catch the ball. Then they started shouting and yelling, and it turned into a horrible quarrel. To be honest, it was Su’s fault but Li was also to blame—they were not calm enough and both said some really mean things. They cared too much about winning and losing. As a matter of fact, blocking, pushing and bumping are just part of a tough game.To avoid such conflicts, we should be kind to one another, which is essential to enjoying a harmonious life. It is also a virtue to forgive and forget, especially in such a competitive andstressful society. Instead of blaming each other, we should communicate more and put ourselves in others place. Don’t be self-centered and try to be considerate. We must learn to handle conflicts calmly and wisely.Text 3 议论文(2011•江西卷)假设你是星光中学的李华,将参加主题为“Let’s Ride Bicycles”的英语演讲比赛。
