Recommendation reports are written • to investigate a matter of interest to a company • to recommend action to be taken on the matter
Writing the conclusion section
• Conclusions should be numbered if there are more than one, and their material should be carefully grouped into unified elements or carefully arranged in a logical sequence.
• In a report that presents the results of an investigation, the term “conclusions” means “convictions arrived at on the basis of evidence” rather than merely “the section that consists of an ending.”
Writing practice
You are supposed to write a conclusion and recommendations in response to the list of findings given below.
Findings 1. It was found that the majority of respondents (76%) had bought illegal VCDs at least once. 2. Slightly less than 30% of respondents appeared to know about the existence of copyright laws in Hong Kong and so the majority of respondents appeared to be unaware that they had committed a crime in purchasing illegal VCDs. This level of ignorance is surprising among the members of a well-educated society. 3. More than 80% of respondents reported that they purchased illegal products because of their significantly lower prices. More than half felt that the quality of the product is far less important than its price. 4. Of those respondents who are aware of the existence of copyright laws, only about 8% felt that the government's promotion and enforcement of the laws is satisfactory.
Writing the conclusion section
• Conclusions state how the writer interprets the findings in the report. • When you write your conclusion you should bear in mind that you have already fully described and discussed the data in the findings section of your report. There is therefore no need to repeat this material in the conclusion. • Your task is to sum up the main findings in general terms and draw an overall conclusion which serves as a link to the recommendations section.
Conclusions & recommendations
• The nature of conclusion and recommendation should not be confused. • Conclusion is a term used to identify mere convictions. • Recommendation refers to actions that are called for on the basis of such convictions.

Task 1 The conclusion section of the tourism report is printed below (P99). Look at the notes in the right-hand margin, which explain the moves or steps the writer makes.

The findings clearly indicate that 20s-30s age group is more dissatisfied with the tours, especially on the aspects of hotels, food, itinerary and transportation. In addition, all the three groups are not satisfied with tour guides and excursions. It can be concluded that to attract more holidaymakers we should take into account / we should not neglect different expectations and needs of different people when we make tourist plans.
