If the symbol of Rome is the Colosseum, then Paris’s symbol is without doubt the Eiffel Tower: both are monuments unique in planning and construction, both stir admiration by their extraordinary dimensions, and both bear witness to man’s inborn will to bui ld something capable of demonstrating the measure of his genius. The tower was erected on the occasion of the World Fair in 1889. These were the years of the Industrial Revolution, of progress and of scientific conquests. The attempt was made to adapt every art to the new direction which life had taken and to make every human activity correspond to the new sensibility created by the rapidly changing times. Architecture also underwent radical changes: glass, iron and steel were the new construction materials, the most suitable ones to make buildings lighter, more dynamic and more modern. The engineer, in short, had taken the place of the architect. And indeed it was an engineer, Gustave Eiffel, who drew --- not on paper but on the surface of the sky itself --- these extraordinary lines of metal, which soar above the Parisian skyline and seem to triumph over all the older monuments of the city. While the older buildings symbolize the past, the Eiffel Tower anticipates the future and the conquests which man will achieve. Altogether 320 m. (1050 ft.) high, the Eiffel Tower is an extremely light, interlaced structure in which no less than 15,000 pieces of metal are welded together. Its extraordinary weight of 7000 tons rests on four enormous pylons with cement bases. It has three floors: the first at 57 m. (187 ft.), the second at 115 m. (377 ft.) and the third at 274 m. (899 ft.). On each of the floors there are bars and restaurants, allowing the tourist to pause there and enjoy the unique panoramic view: at times, on days when the visibility is perfect, one can see almost 45 miles. Beneath the Eiffel Tower is the green area of the Champs-de-Mars, a military field at one time but later transformed into a garden.
