Impression to the old man and the sea

Impression to the old man and the sea

Impression to the Old Man and the SeaThe novel the Old Man and the Sea is one of the masterpieces of Ernest Miller Hemingway, an American writer has been widely known all over the world for decades. Ernest Hemingway born in Oak Park Illinois started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas at the age of seventeen, is without dispute a giant of modern literature among the twentieth-century American fiction writers and also is a representative of the lost generation writers in the United States. His outstanding short stories brought him great fame and made him famous. Hemingway’s four major novels—The Sun Also Rises (1926),A Farewell to Arms (1929),For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940),and The Old Man and the Sea (1952)comprise a great contribution to modern fiction. Hemingway’s style, with its consistent use of short, concrete, direct prose and of scenes consisting exclusively of dialogue, gives his novels and short stories a distinctive accessibility that is immediately identifiable with the author. The Old Man and the Sea tells the story about an old, weathered fisherman, named Santiago, lived in a small fishing village in Cuba, struggling to catch a big fish without flinching. Santiago has just gone 84 days without catching a fish, which made the people around him look down upon him, and even his follower, a loyal boy, Manolin, was forced to leave him by Manolin’s parents and to fish on a more lucrative fishing boat. However, Manolin dose not want to leave Santiago, therefore, he keeps touch with him in secret and makes sure that the old man is always safe, fed and healthy. Santiago, meanwhile, decides to head out on the Gulf Stream alone. He feels the 85th day will be lucky to him. He set out on his old, rickety skiff. Alone the sea, Santiago sets up his fishing lines with the utmost precision, a skill that other fisherman lacked. Finally, he catches a huge Marlin, which has found Santiago’s bait and sets off a very long struggle between the two. The Marlin is so huge that causes the struggle taking its toll on Santiago. His hands become badly cramped and he iscut and bruised from the force of the fish. They are attached to each other physically, and in Santiago’s case, emotionally. He respects and loves the Marlin and admires its beauty and greatness. Despite this, he has to kill it. He fells brave, like his hero Joe DiMaggio, who accomplished great feats despite obstacles, injuries or adversities. After enjoying a few moments of pride, a pack of sharks detects the blood in the water and follow the trail to Santiago’s skiff. Each shark takes a huge bite out of the Marlin, but the old man fends them off, himself now bruised, but alive. He sails back to shore with the carcass of his Marlin.I admire the old fisherman's will very much, he lets me understand that a person must have unremitting spirit, and he could then succeed. Seeing back to the reality of ourselves, once confronted with some little difficulties, all of us complain bitterly. I admire that kind of spirit of the old man, though know rival's strength is very strong, but he has not shrunk back at all, challenging the difficulty. It is for this kind of spirit that the old fisherman has eventually obtained the victory. On the other aspect, I am subdued by old man's optimistic spirit when the “rare loot” is being carved up by the sharks. In our lives, some losses are unavoidable; we should treat the optimistic attitude. Old fisherman's spirit of making great efforts to struggle fearless of danger and difficulty that the novel has been extolled, should be followed by people even in modern society, and do not be satisfied with the current situation but to be unremitting to do anything, more important, we must not give up halfway when meeting the difficulty. Only in this way, we could obtain greater success and victory. As the novel tells “a man can be destroyed, but not defeated”, human beings are extremely strong in spirits. And it is the spirit that makes human beings different and unbeatable.。

Impression of The Old Man and the SeaThe Old Man and the Sea is one of Ernest Hemingway’s most famous works of fiction. It was written in Cuba in 1951 and was published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. Hemingway is one of the most famous American novelists of modern times. He is also an international literary celebrity in the world. His father was a prominent doctor, and also good at fishing and hunting. The influence of his dad made him full of love with fishing and hunting. His life was active and adventurous, but it was full of pains. He had once joined the army and had injured in Italy, and he suffered much that was brought about by the war deeply. He was disappointed with the world and the pessimistic about the fate of the man. In order to save the desperate situation, Hemingway wrote a work, the Old Man and the Sea, that he firmly believes to be the best works in his life. The critics praised that the novel was Hemingw ay’s last ma jor work of fiction and he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea. In 1954, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. During his later life, Hemingway suffered from increasing physical and mental problems. In July 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself. Hemingw ay’s distinctive writing style was characterized by economy and understatement and had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. After World War II, Hemingway moved to Cuba, met old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway by a ship in the storm, Fuentes rescued Hemingway. Since then, Hemingway and Fuentes forged a profound friendship, and often went fishing. In 1936, Fuentes was far out to sea to catch a big fish and many things happened and The Old Man and the Sea was based on the true story. When I was a middle school student, I’ve finished this book in Chinese. At that time, I thought it was a boring story. I couldn’t understand why the writer used so many words to descr ibe an old man’s fishing experience. But wh en I read it in English, I really gain something new both in the way of expressions and the spirits it showed to me. Maybe different ages to read the same book will learn different things from it. Now, I would like to review some information about this book. Such as the background, major characters as well as the topic. This novel written by Hemingway told us a story about an old fisherman who lived alone in sea fishing, the old man called Santiago made a living by fishing. He experienced a lot of difficult things and suffered a lot of pains. With the loss of time, he was left many traces on his body. He often went out to do some fishing on the sea on his own, but down on his luck, he hadn’t caught any fish for 84 d ays and he would soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. However, he never gave up. He went far out into the sea and the next day he caught a huge marlin which was bigger than his boat and he had never seen and heard of the fish. The fish was at least two feet longer than his boat. It was very large and dragged the boat drifted for two days and nights, the elderly was in a never suffered through a difficult test in these two days and two nights. Finally the fish was stabbed and tied to the bow. However, when he was on the way home, it was unfortunately that the smells of blood of the marlin draw a lot of sharks’ attention and they suddenly turned up in return to fight for it. In order to protect the marlin and him, the old man tried his best to have a desperate struggle and fought with them. After a cruel fight, he won it and came back home tiredly. But the giant marlin was almost eaten up by sharks. Although he only got a skeleton of the giant marlin and almost dead with exhaustion at last, he was als o a great hero in many people’s heart. This book gave me a deep impression especially the description about the man’sbraveness and persistence. Different aspects could be seen from Santiago: such as brave, persistent, pride, optimistic, lonely and intelli gent. He didn’t catch a single fish for eight-four days. What’s worse? The child who had caught fish with him also forced to leave him. Lonesome was his only friend as well as enemy. But he still kept on trying without being despaired. He went far out into the sea and caught a huge marlin after three days’ patient struggle. When a person waited for something so hard and when he had an opportunity to get it, he would cherish the chance carefully and made his mind to realize it. From fighting with the huge marlin to driving away the fierce shark, it is only when the condition was so bad that can show a person’s skill of braveness and persistence. Even thought he was so tired, he brought the big skeleton of the fish back to the bank. Maybe Santiago got nothing, but he had tasted the victory in fighting process. The tough guy image of the old fisherman was more obvious and outstanding. It represented a spirit that was struggle, pride, confident and never given up. When reading the big fish’s smell of blood was sm elled by one crowd of shark fish, struggled swims snatches the food. Old person’s left hand happened to in the convulsions. He could only use the right hand, with wooden stick.I also appreciate the relationship between the old man and the boy. The old man was in bad luck and the boy had got good fishes after he left the old man. Santiago didn’t feel jealous but happy for him. When talking with the boy who was not wi lling to leave, the man said, “I know you did not leave me because you do ubted” and he felt it was quite normal, though he would be lonely without the boy. When the boy asked if he could offer the old man a beer on the terrace and then took the stuff home, the old man said, “why not”. Between fishermen, all these details showed that Santiago was reasonable, sensible, kind with open mind. The old man’s grace lie d in his gender feeling. Some details in how the old man woke the boy: he took hold of one foot gently and held it until the boy woke up. When the boy was still sleepy, the old man put his arm a cross his shoulders and said, “I am sorry”. Just like someone said, heartlessness doesn’t make a hero; pity for children makes more the man. With confident attitude towards life, the old man took thing philosophically. In fact the boy could come back to him and he needed the boy, but when the boy wanted to be back, the old man refused because it was the boy’s parents who made him leave and he could not make the boy awkward and unlucky with him. The boy also cared much about the old man. He looked after the man and accompanied with him. They had a great time when they get together. Although his parents forced him to another fish boat, he still continued take the old man as his mentor. Some people said that Santiago ended up with failure, because he got nothing except the fish bone at the end, though he got through the fierce fight. However, in some people’s eyes, Santiago was successful, because he showed a kind of spirit that made people excited and encouraged. In fact, Santiago got tired, but he also got more experience and skill from this catching fish. In real life, we need a kind of spirit to achieve our goals and dreams. In my opinion, he was both successful and failed. He was successful, because he did everything carefully and positively, and he always kept strong will and he never gave up. He was failed because he only shared the process, while he didn’t care about the result so that he got nothing finally. However, in real life, no matter what our work is, we need to the good result to prove our ability. If we only care about the process of work, not the results, perhaps we cannot get others’ admission. Nowadays, many companies just care about the results, not the process. So, in the future, when we work, we should keep strong will and never give up. Of course, we should share the process, and do everything positively and carefully. In the life, some losses are inevitable. We should treat by the optimistic manner. This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties. And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and nevergiving up. While it is certainly true that Santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end. Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how horrible his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. The glory and honor Santiago acquires comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight. Generally speaking, Santiago was an old man, but he was an admirable person, because we can learn a lot of spirit from him. When he got nothing except the bone, he didn’t feel disappointed, because he believed that he would catch fishes on some day. No matter how difficult the thing was, he never gave up. He always kept clam heart to solve these problems. In a word, a man can be destroyed but not defeated. We cannot be defeated by any difficulty.I’m impressed by the sentence which is “We can be destroyed, but we can’t be beat.” I think everyone should do it no matter what happen in our life. This book makes me know something I didn’t know in the past. The book and the old man have a great influence in my life.。

the appreciation of the old man and the sea

the appreciation of the old man and the sea

The appreciation of The Old Man And The Sea The writer of the old man and the sea is Ernest Hemingway who was a great American writer. He used hunted and explored in the African jungles and fished on the Cuban seas. Then the first world war broke out. In the period he served as an ambulance driver in Italy. In world warⅡ, he first took part in the US navy and then worked as a report with the british air force. All this experiences became his literary subjects and themes later. Especially his journalistic experience enabled him to pursue brief, vivid and vigorous diction.Hemingway was known for his economy of expression and colloquial style, forming the unique Hemingway theme and hero. The Hemingway hero exercised the Hemingway theme: he lived in a dark, hopeless environment and knew that he was ultimately doomed however hard he struggled, but his “despairing courage” enabled him to behave as a true man and fight for his dignity in adversity. In The Old Man and the Sea, the protagonist is Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman. He had not caught any fish for 84 days. Because of it he was laughed by around fisherman. For dignity he decided to set out to the sea further. This time he was lucky and found a great marlin. Through a hard fighting, he eventually killed the marlin andshowed his pride. But unfortunately, groups of sharks came to his trophy by tracing its scent. Santiago fought them desperately in order to defend the marlin’s pride and to prove himself still being a proud, undefeated old fisherman. Through three trouble days he finally retreated all sharks and returned home, exhausted. After all fishermen knew his experience, he won the respects that he wanted. Meanwhile, he also strengthened his friendship with the boy whom he missed a lot on the sea.In a word, Santiago proved the spirit of the dignified and tragic Hemingway hero, stubbornly fighting a predetermined losin g battle:” But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”The novel has a full plot. It is made of beginning, rising action, climax and resolution. The beginning is that the old fisherman, Santiago, did not have any gains in 84 days in a row and it made him laughed by other fishermen around villages. Then Santiago decided to set out to the further seas to catch some fishes for proving his pride. In this journey he hooked a big marlin, struggled painstakingly with it, and killed it eventually. This section is the rising action. In next, hungry sharks followed the track of the unlucky fisherman by the marlin’s blood. Santiago fought threegroups of sharks in succession for protecting the marlin. The section is the climax. Through three days tough fights, Santiago finally retreated all sharks and returned home. He got respects all fishermen for this journey. This section is the falling action. The plot is full, simple, clear and rigorous, but thrilling. The writer in the novel is just the narrator. Hemingway told the story through the third person’s point of view. The novel is vivid and visual, especially the climax. In this section Hemingway mainly told three things in detail. The first is what state of the old fisherman’s mental, physical and equipments. The second thing is what state of sharks’ physical and equipments. The third thing is the process that how the old and tired fisherman fought intelligently with evil and hungry sharks. For vivid describing, Hemingway used some figurative language. In the first time fight, the old fisherman fought with Mako shark. “he was a very big Mako shark built to swim as fast as the fastest fish in the sea and everything about him was beautiful except his jaws.” By the word we can know the shark fast and equipped well. The writer used the fastest fish in the sea to compare with the Mako shark. In addition, the writer called the Mako shark “he”. we can easily image the shark like a person who can think and know how to equip himself well, even able use right strategies to hunt. So the old fisherman’s enemy was cunning andevil. “They were shaped like a man’s fingers when they are crisped like claws.” This word described the Mako shark’s teeth which were compared to man’s fingers. It can proved the shark’s teeth sharp and long. The Old Man and the Sea may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. Certainly, the qualities of Ernest Hemingway's short novel are those which we associate with many great stories of the past: near perfection of form within the limitations of its subject matter, restraint of treatment, regard for the unities of time and place, and evocative simplicity of style. Also, like most great stories, it can be read on more than one level of meaning. On one it is an exciting but tragic adventure story. Sustained by the pride of his calling, the only pride he has left, a broken old fisherman ventures far out into the Gulf Stream and there hooks the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. Then, alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he is forced into a losing battle with marauding sharks; they leave him nothing but the skeleton of his catch. On another level the book is a fable of the unconquerable spirit of man, a creature capable of snatching spiritual victory from circumstances of disaster and material defeat. On still another it is a parable of religious significance, its theme supported by the writer's unobtrusivehandling of Christian symbols and metaphors. Like Coleridge's Ancient Mariner, Hemingway's Cuban fisherman is a character allowing the imagination of his creator to operate simultaneously in two different worlds of meaning and value, the one real and dramatic, the other moral and devotionally symbolic. From first paragraph we already know that Hemingway’s experience had a great influence on his literary theme. This novel is also not in addition. His fisherman and war experience shaped Hemingway hero. So what is Hemingway hero? Maybe we can know it through the old Cuban fisherman. After finishing the novel, a respect occupied my mind. What a tough, strong-minded man he is. In such a tough environment, the old fisherman still defeated all the sharks. I think there were three facts resulting in it.First, in a so hard time he still never lost his fight courage. The sharks were so equipped well, strong and cunning. While he was so tired and weak, almost lost all his weapons, hurt serious and suffered from lonely. However, finally the old fisherman just defeated all sharks.Second, he has a clear, noble destination, or we can call it a powerful opponent, the great purple fish. In the story, the old man regarded the fish as the most "beautiful", "noble", "calm" thing . Ashe had said:"I love you and respect you very much, But I will kill you dead until this day end."It is generally known that in every circumstance, destination is always the most important step in one's journey. One can never do his utmost until he realized how lofty his goal is.Third, he was enough optimistic and hopeful. Seeing the gain which he took so much time and efforts to catch was ate by the scumbags. He felt angry, but he still kept optimistic. as he once said, "Think about something cheerful, every minute you are closer to home, you sail lighter for the loss of 40 pounds." Sometimes we'll find our success or opportunity vanishing bit by bit, but if we get into desperation instead of trying to save what is remained, we would be defeated to the core.In the novel I know what Hemingway hero is. Maybe it can be told by a word, “But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.。

BookReviewofTheOldManAndTheSea(老人与海读书报告英文)

BookReviewofTheOldManAndTheSea(老人与海读书报告英文)Book Review of The Old Man And The Sea“Man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Said the old man, when he was confronted with a life-and-death fight. I was totally shocked and impressed by his persistence and courage. The old experienced fisherman, Santiago, had set sail in vain for 84 days without catching a single fish. He was regarded as a total loser by other fisherman, so the boy whom he was with at first left him, following his parents’ order. The old fisherman was then all alone floating in the vast ocean. But he wasn’t defeated by the disappointment and misfortune. On the contrary, He still believed firmly in himself that his bad luck would soon come to an end. On the very next day, the huge marlin showed up like it was meant to be, with its extreme strength, dragging the old man’s boat round and round against the old man’s pulling. Exhausted but determined, the code hero never gave up and finally win the marlin. However, on his way home, a group of sharks followed the smell of blood and chased after him. Soon a fierce fight putting up between the man and sharks, he had sworn to stop until he pilled the last drop of his blood, using up everything he could reach to defend. Though only the skeleton of the big marlin arrived at the harbour with him, he was admired as a hero by those who had teased at him.Nowhere has the significance of a strong will been so vividly and accurately enlightened as in The Old Man And The Sea. So constantly did the difficulty appeared in his life, but he never blamed fate for his misfortune, instead, we can always findoptimism in the character. No matter what impossible task he was facing, he sticks to his principle: never submit to life. He might be weak in body, but he was mentally strong, which remind me of the quote of Romain Rolland,” There is only one heroism in the world: to see the world as it is and to love it.”He who didn’t ma ke it to bring the whole marlin back shows us the true meaning of success doesn’t necessarily lies in the result but more importantly in one’s spirit. He was admired as a true hero for his perseverance and the power of his strong will.He got nothing in the end, but he conquered the sea that he had used to relied on for living. Life is like the sea in the story, full of ups and downs, and sometimes even downs and downs, from another perspective, this is the only way to a strong spirit, like the saying goes,”what doesn’t kills me makes me stronger.” In my point of view, the images in the novel has many profound symbolic meanings. The marlin represents for the things that we eager to achieve, the sharks are the obstacles lies on the way to accomplish our goals, only with a confident mind to meet the challenges bravely can we obtain moral victory.Undoubtedly, The Old Man And The Sea is Hemingway’s most immortal work. The old man’s precious quality and virtue was revealed perfectly by his description. And the work encourages people around the world to live up and never give up in the face of difficulties.。

Book review of The Old Man And The SeaThe famous novel--The Old Man And The Sea is a book that I have always wanted to read in my high school. It tells a story about an old, experienced fishermannamed Santiago who had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish and wasconsidered salao, the worst form of unlucky. On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago set outalone, confident that his unlucky streak was near its end.[1]By the moon of the day, an exceptionally huge marlintook his bait・which was 2 feet longer than his skiff. But the vigor of the big fish was so strong that it dragged the boat drifting for two daysand two nights.Meanwhile, the old man held the line and bore the great tension fromit without a break. Despite the injury and pain from the struggleSantiago stillappreciated his rival and always regarded the marlin as his brother. Finally Santiagogathered all the strength he has left in him and managed to stab the marlin with aharpoon, ending the bitterly tough fight, which lasted for nearly two days.[2] On his way back, crowds of sharks were attracted by the blood scent of the big marlin. Unwilling to lose his trophy which he thought was beautiful, noble, calm andof great dignity, the old man kept fighting with the sharks though there was no hopeto win. During the fight, he killed several sharks but lost almost all the tools that couldbe used as a weapon. Finally the sharks have almost devoured the marlin's entirecarcass,[3]only leaving the old man a huge skeleton. The old man continued hisjourneySantiago is a real man and will never give up even when there is little hope. He likes challengesand will spare no effort to achieve it. He has played the hand gamewith the great negro from Cienfuegoswho was the strongest man on the docks. Theyhad gone one day and one night with their elbows on a chalk line on the stable anddidn`t stop even blood came out from the fingernails of both his and the negro`s hands. Finally he unleashed his effort and forced the hand of the negro down and down untilit rested on the wood.[5]I still remember the scene: when the marlin fish was attacked by a group of sharks, ^Fight them, ̄ He said. ^I`ll fight them until I die. ̄[6] The old man is a symbol of the perfect person: strong, generous, kind and full of love, which Hemingway admires most. Even failed in thearena of life, in faced with irreversible fate, he is mentally strong and always tough. Although they didn`t succeed, they owned the dignity and courage as a manand the poise of a winner. The brave Santiago is also an image to reflect the authorhimself. To some extent we regard it as an autobiography of Hemingway. World War ・has left him with 237 scars on his body and the nightmarish memories of war. After the war, he insisted on writing every day and created many famous books. And in1954,the novel The Old Man and The Sea brought him the Nobel Prize inliterature. He has a special writing habit: when he was writing, he always stood. But inhis later years, Hemingway was in great sickness and deeply addicted toalcoholwithout creating any influential work.In 1961, Hemingway ended his life withhis gun.Hemingway has always been regarded as a Dauntless Man in literature, justlike the old Santiago. They represent a kind of man, who has full energy to overcomeany obstacles, brave spirit to respond to any challenge and a strong will never to giveup. His suicide shocked all the people.Maybe we can get an answer from Nietzsche`spoint which he advocated--Timely and die. Die in the peaks of happiness is the mostglorious. He said in The Old Man and The Sea that a man can be destroyed but not defeated. Maybe he was worried himself to be defeated, so he destroyed himself. He gave up his life to defend his dignity and nobleness. Our life is like a long journey from birth to death. It will be full ofendless difficulties and obstacles, just like the marlin and the shark. Sometimes they will prevent us from getting what we want and sometimes they will take away what we cherish most. Only those who have no fear of everything and never give up can win the long battle. I will always remember what Santiago said, man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.[7]Reference1.2.3.4.Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and The Sea.5.Ernest Hemingway. Review of the old man and sea 老人与海

Review of the old man and sea 老人与海

Review of "The old manand The sea"Written byThis story is talking about a bad luck for a elderly man.It is a the indomitable fishing story. He was an old man named Santiago who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eight-four days without taking a fish.A boy named Manolin once companied him after 40 days ,his parents told him to get away from the unlucky man.The boy adored the old man so much that saw after him at very tum.Once the man wanted to try against the so-called bad luck to catch a very big fish to prove that they were wrong and he was strong. Except for the courage and confidence,he had plenty of fishing techniques, He set out on the eighty-fifth day.He could row steadily and it was no effort for him since he kept within his speed and the surface of the ocean was flat except for the occasional swirls of he current. He was a good fisherman, he wanted to go to the place where was far away from the coast leaving from other people.Firstly he caught a small tuna, bullet shaped, and he was very excited because of a good bait was caught. With the time passing by,he could not see the green of the shore now but only the tops of the blue hills that showed white. He would never be afraid ,on the other way around, heplayed with the dolphins , birds , flyfish... The old man thought of theocean as feminine and as somethingthat gave or withheld great favours. He could master of everything. After a while ,he saw one of the projecting green sticks dip sharply among his lines. He felt the weight of the marlin and thought that this far out it must be huge in this month. After it bite the bait ,the old man planned to kill the huge fish and come off with flying colors. However, when he struck hard with both hands, nothing happened. The fish moved steadily and the traveled slowly on the calm water until no land was visible and the sun set. With years of experience, elderly man had confidence to defeat it.At this time ,the old man was much more hope for the boy. With the fish he caught and a bottle of water, the old man actually felt sorry for the fish, not himself. He said to himself that I must convince it though my left hand was still cramping . He was alone and his fate was fast to the biggest fish that he had ever seen and bigger than he had ever heard of.He believed himself that he would kill it .He believed that he could beat anyone if he wanted to badly enough. But the old man was too weak and was sleepy. He felt faint but he held on the great fish all the strain that he could. He tried many many times but never say "give up".He forgot all his pain and what was left of his strength and his long gone pride and he putit against the fish's agony. After hepull the fish to his side ,he lifted theharpoon as high as he could anddrove it down with all his strength, and more strength he had just summoned ,into the marlin's side just behind the great chest fin.He won!He lashed it alongside due to its huge shape weighed more than fifteen hundred pounds and its length was about eighteen feet. The shark was not an accident. After an hour,a huge Mako shark hit him and take away forty pounds and the harpoon and all the ropes which were used to kill the repellant guy. When he was not out of sad , two Galanos attacked him for a second time.Luckily ,he killed them with the oar with the knife lashed to it.He was so brave and calm.Nevertheless he felt distressed about a quarter of the fish ,which was the best meat. The next shark was a single shovel-nose.He killed it sophisticated with the experience of the previous two times. The next two galanos were the same fate so was the marlin. The booty was only half of its original appearance when he saw the light coming from the coast.Unfortunately, sharks came in a pack, attacking a old man without a weapon in the dark with his looted booty. One after one,the man strongly protest it,but finally, there was only the carcass.Until then, the old man paid no attention to the sharks followed except steering.Good things are so short-lived.He came back, with his boat andthe skeleton. All the people weresurprised and inspired by the oldman. He said to the boy that he was beaten now finally .But the boy said,"They didn't beat you.Not the fish."Finally the old man decided to go fishing again with the boy and dreamed of the lions again .Yes,as the boy said, the old man was not beaten! The ocean stands for the real life;Marlin stands for the goal;shark stands forthe tragic elements of ;The boy stands for the next generation who is full of energy;lion stands for the vitality .In the face of difficulties, the old man is always full of confidence ,never to bow his head.He struggles for his dream and is brave in accepting the awful challenge. He is not a poor ,elderly man,he is a winner,a real winner. And he will always be by the reason of great courage and strong willpower. He is a rich man who is positive and optimistic ;He is a good fisherman who is patient and experienced .He is courageous and indomitable and never admit defeat, never give up.I admire the old fisherman fear no hardship and his optimism and positive attitude toward life.We all should live in hope no matter what happen. We should smile when facing adverse conditions. I learned a lot from this book, the paragraph below left the deepest impression on me.I would like to share it with you:It was too good to last ,hethought .I wish it had been a dreamnow and that I had never hooked thefish and was alone in bed on the newspapers."But man is not made for defeat ," he said ."A man can be destroyed but not defeated."。

Impression of “The Old Man and the Sea”when I read“The Old Man and the Sea” ,I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. The Old Man and the Sea is based on the true story. After World War II, Hemingway moved to Cuba, met old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway by a ship in the storm, Fuentes rescued Hemingway. Since then, Hemingway and Fuentes forged a profound friendship, and often with fishing. In 1936, Fuentes was far out to sea to catch a big fish and many things happened. This is a book about the old fisherman who lived alone in sea fishing. After the 84 days with nothing,he caught a huge marlin. It had never been seen and heard of for the old man. The fish was at least two feet longer than his boat. The fish was very large, and dragging the boat drifted for two days and nights, the elderly was in a never suffered through a difficult test in these two days and two nights. Finally the fish was stabbed and tied to the bow. However, it was unfortunate that some sharks suddenly turned up in returning, the elderly and the Shark had a desperate struggle. Finally, the giant marlin was eaten up by sharks. After some bitter, the old people dragged home only a bare and a skeleton of the injury, but he still be appreciated. The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. It is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. Indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. Santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found “the great negro of Cienfuegos” worthy. HSantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. Rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny. It is certainly true that Santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear outhis skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway doesnot condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiagostands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, andbecause his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence ofdefeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or morelikely, it would have been abandoned before the end.Santiago was poor.he had nothing except a little boat and harpoon. But hesaid “Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what youcan do with what there is.”Santiago was alone. Mandolin can not go to seawith him because of his parents. He catches fishes alone. He fights withsharks alone. He can talk to nobody except himself. No one will help him.Buteven though he faced hungry, weary and difficulty alone, he does not giveup. The old man is a great man.Although he failed for many times in hislife,he never gave up. He is a steel-willing man whoinsisted his dream and work hard. You can destory him,but you can’t beathim.Whatever he faced to, he would never yield to the difficult, which shows a strong spir In our lives, I think we should learn something from the old man which will make us have。

My thoughts on the old man and the sea,a man is not made for defeat,a man can be destroyed but not defeated。

This sentence has lingered in my mind since I finished the book" The Old Man and the Sea". In the face of fighting with this huge marlin, the old man did not release the fishing line in his hands for three days and nights, and the old man did not flinch when confronted with attack of sharks, but decided to pick up the wooden stick in the hands to defend their own harvest.Such a tough guy image suddenly highlighted in front of me, which made me admire him and cheer for his strong mind. Challenge is of course nowhere in the present life。

We need to learn from the old man who with a brave heart, in the face of challenges clenched his fist, rather than yield, avoid, and give up. In the boundless sea, the old man was sitting alone in the small sailing boat, and seemed so small under the setting sun in the distance, extraordinarily slim. But the old man hadn’t caught one fish since 84 days ago。

The feelings towards the old man and the sea after reading

The feelings towards the old man and the sea after reading

The feelings towards the old man and the sea after reading The story of the old man and the sea is very simple, it tells us that a Cuban old fish man Santiago’s fishing experience. He nearly achieved nothing after 84 days fishing, but he didn’t give up and continue to his work. Fortunately he fished a big Salmon in 84 days, however, the Salmon is too big to drag on the boat. After his calculation, he tied it on the side of the boat. To his surprise, on his way back to the shore, he was attacked by the sharks, and when he returned the shore, there were only fish tail and a pine left. After finished reading, I was deeply impressed by the protagonist—Santiago. In this fiction, I can read some spirits from Santiago. Firstly, it’s about his optimism. Before starting fishing, he made some idle talk with the little boy. At this moment, his face was filled with smile and talked happily with the boy, I can’t read any failure expressions from it. Secondly, he is a very kind and compassionate man. When faced with his opponent—Salmon, he nearly called it “friend”even wanted to feed it in person .In the process of fighting, he stroked and talked with the tiny birds which rested on the boat. Thirdly, it’s about his perseverance. He got nothing in the successive of 84 days fishing, he never give up. When faced with bad luck, loneliness, poverty, especially the malicious sharks, he still continues to his work. His strong willpower encouraged and supported him to defeat all of them.In most people’s eyes, Santiago is a failure, because he got nothing in the successive of 84 days fishing, he just got the fish tail and a spine. And the same is true of the fact. I also show my deep sympathy for the old man, his struggle is in vain, it exchanges for him nothing but pain, tired and exhausted. However, in his eyes, he admits being beaten but refused to admit defeat.“A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. From this fiction, I really understand that the physical parts can accept the torture, but the mental willpower is holy which can’t be destroyed by everything.。

Impression of “The Old Man and the Sea”When I was a middle school student, I’ve finished this book in Chinese. But when I read it in English,I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.May be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it.At least, for my part, that is true.Firstly,I would like to review some information about this book.Such as the background, major characters and the topic of it.The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.[1]The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribner's, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.This book gives me a deep impression especially the description about the man’s braveness and persistence. In this book, i n order to suggest the profundity of the old man’s sacrifice and the glory that derives from it, Hemingway purposefully likens Santiago to Christ, who, according to Christian theology, gave his life for the greater glory of humankind. Crucifixion imagery is the most noticeable way in which Hemingway creates the symbolic parallel between Santiago and Christ. When Santiago’s palms are first cut by his fishing line, the reader cannot help but think of Christ suffering his stigmata. Later, when the sharks arrive, Hemingway portrays the old man as a crucified martyr, saying that he makes a noise similar to that of a man having nails driven through his hands. Furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across his shoulders recalls Christ’s march toward Calvary. Even the position in whichSantiago collapses on his bed—face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up—brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life. The major characters in this book are also vivid and lively.Santiago ,t he old man of the novella’s title, Santiago is a Cuban fisherman who has had an extended run of bad luck. Despite his expertise, he has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four days. He is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride in his abilities. His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance. The marlin ,Santiago hooks the marlin, which we learn at the end of the novella measures eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his fishing expedition. Manolin ,a boy presumably in his adolescence, Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. Due to Santiago’s recent bad luck, Manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.Joe DiMaggio, although DiMaggio never appears in the novel, he plays a significant role nonetheless. Santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Perico ,Perico, the reader as sumes, owns the bodega in Santiago’s village. He never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fisherman’s life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. This act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging Santiago.Martin,l ike Perico, Martin, a café owner in Santiago’s village, does not appear in the story. The reader learns of him through Manolin, who often goes to Martin for Santiago’s supper. As the old man says, Martin is a man of frequent kindness w ho deserves to be repaid. From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish—he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. Almost as a reminder of Sa ntiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat.” But the old man refuses defeat at every turn: he resolves to sail out beyond the other fishermen to where the biggest fish promise to be. He lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless.Because Santiago is pitted against the creatures of the sea, some readers choose to view the tal e as a chronicle of man’s battle against the natural world, but the novella is, more accurately, the story of man’s place within nature. Both Santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed. As Santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitable struggle that will lead to its death. Santiago lives according to his own observation: “man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In Hemingway’s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. Accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old man’s trophy catch. Santiago’s struggle doe s not enable him to change man’s place in the world. Rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that ba ttle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. The glory and honor Santiago accrues comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight.Santiago dreams his pleasant dream of the lions at play on the beaches of Africa three times. The first time is the night before he departs on his three-day fishing expedition, the second occurs when he sleeps on the boat for a few hours in the middle of his struggle with the marlin, and the third takes place at the very end of the book. In fact, the sober promise of the triumph and regeneration with which the novella closes is supported by the final image of the lions. Because Santiago associates the lions with his youth, the dream suggests the circular nature of life. Additionally, because Santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forces—life and death, love and hate, destruction and regeneration—of nature. This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .。

A Review of The Old Man and The Sea(老人与海读后感)

A Review of The Old Man and The Sea(老人与海读后感)

A Review of “The Old Man and The Sea”“The Old Man and The Sea”was written by Ernest Hemingway, in which tells us a story of a bravery fishing old man. He had no fish lasting for 84 days, but from the 85th days he finally captured a marlin. However, the marlin was so big that the old man struggles with it for three days. When the old man went back to his town, the fish suffered from the attack of several sharks. After he arrived at the land, there was only marlin’s head, tail and chine. I deeply have an impression on this novel, for the trait of the old man is greatest, that motivates me more bravery, courage, endurance. At first day, the old man came back without fish, and the boy helped him carry the sail. Although the sail was furled, it was similar to the flag of permanent defeat. This reflects that the old man never lack hope and confidence. He loves fishing and be willing to try to do it once again in spite of coming back lonely every time. Next, when the old man and the boy talked about the cast net. In fact, the cast net was sold, but they still repeat this fiction every day. On one hand, the old man does not admit he has abjection, as a result it is quite important to be pride for himself. On the other hand, the boy loves the old man very much and would not like to hurt him. Afterward, the old manfell asleep. When he closed his eyes, there was no life in his face. Here, the old man suffers from too many troubles in fishing. It seems that he slept at this moment until death, he felt very tired. However, he could not give up and lives bravely. At second day, the old man set out to fishing. He chose the different direction from the other fisherman for hope. And he captured a big fish---marlin. At first he does not know how size the fish is, he just says marlin to bite in his heart, for he thinks that if you said a good thing it might not happen. In this point, what is to indicate is that excitement and hope of the old man, and kind of his religion belief. At the last part of the second day, he was exhausted and thought that he should not have been a fisherman. Since everything has been a foregone conclusion, it might not to be changed. So the old man wants to make efforts for his life. This is the meaning of the life. Overall the second day, one is the old man’s artistry in fishing. He is an artist and can read the sky, bird and fish. He regards bird, fish as his friends and brothers. This indicates he loves them. In the wide sea, he is alone and needs someone instead of the boy. Two is that, if there is no his revolution, optimistic and endurance, all we call the “spiritual support”, it is big possible to die for the old man.At third day, the old man was very painful but fortunately he got the marlin. The marlin, the stronger and larger, means the old man, the greater and more unyielding. In this struggle, the old man is a true hero because of his self-confident and steadfastness. I think the old man loves the marlin, he regards it as his brother. Similarly, they own the same strength and power. Whatever the pain is means more hope for the old man.At fourth day, the shark attacked the marlin. This is critical strike for the old man. But he said “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. Here, it restates the meaning of the life, not whether success or failure, but whether to struggle for himself. For the old man, shark is inevitable such as the plight of the life. However, he does not have any complain to it and can be calm and keep the belief all the time. Or it is a kind of rebirth. After the old man struggles with the sharks, what he gets is that some meaning of rebirth. At fifth day, the old man went back the town. The boy saw the old man with the exhaust and just wished him to rest. This is the love.In whole novel, what equally important role is the boy. After the old man goes fishing, he encounters the plight then he says “I need the boy”. And the boy cares about everything of the oldman. From here it can be seen that the old man and the boy love each other such as teacher and student, or parent and child, or friends. They are dependent and believable on each other. This is the faith and harmony, no war and agony.I think one of the most primary skills in this novel is the symbolism. Marlin means personal dream and life seeking. Shark means unavoidable tragic fortune. Sea means changeable human society. Lions means bravery, strong and anti-wicked. The old man means the representative of struggling with vicious power. In other words, under the background of shadow force in a turbulent society, one person wants to change his miserable fortune even pursue his ideal unless be provided with bravery, strengthen, endurance. Thus, the old man often thought of the lions in Africa when he was young. That symbols the strong vitality and hope.。

对海明威的⽼⼈与海的评价英⽂版篇⼀ The Old Man and the Sea was written by an American writer named Ernest Hemingway. It has been translated into tens of languages, and the writer was so proud of his work. Santiago, the hero of the story, had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish back. At first, a boy named Manolion had been with him, but Santiago couldn’t catch even one fish. The boy had gone at his parents’ orders in a lucky boat which caught three good fish the first week, and the couple thought that it was definitely and finally bad to let their boy stay with the old fisherman. On Santiago’s eighty-fifth day of fishing, he went out alone, leaving the smell of the land behind and rowing out into the clean early morning smell of ocean. To his surprise, he caught a tuna which he had never seen before and it was hard to believe that the tuna was bigger than his boat. Later, the blood from the tuna left a trail for all sharks as wide as a highway, so fighting against sharks was unavoidable. The result was that sharks ate up all the meat of the tuna and Santiago only brought the tuna skeleton back. He was so tired that he slept deeply as soon as he got home, dreaming of lions. In this story, Santiago was an old and poor widow though he was good at fishing and had so much valuable experience. He only lived on fishing all his life. At long last, he just brought the skeleton back, you may think such a fisherman should be a loser, but this result didn’t mean failing. On the contrary, Hemingway used the skeleton which was the pillar of spirit to strengthen the meaning of the old man’s life. Santiago was described as a perfect person who never gave up. The boy named Manolion appeared in the beginning and at the end. Even during Santiago’s voyage, he always came to the poor old man’s mind. He was the only person who cared Santiago sincerely, trust Santiago absolutely, and the young boy wanted to be an inheritor of Santiago’s career. Hemingway not only told us the experience of fishing should be spread from generation to generation, but also expected us to admire, to learn from and to carry on the spirit of Santiago. The appearance of Manilion was not by chance, which was arranged by Hemingway. During Santiago’s long voyage, how much he wished the boy could have been with him to drive his loneliness away. Youth is the symbol of energy and hope. Even an old man can be young inside. Lions appeared several times in Santiago’s dreams for they were living in his heart, which showed the spirit of Santiago would never be low. The coming of the sharks could not be avoided. They can be thought as attack which can swallow your success and happiness. The story tells me to face the problems happened in my life with a heart as wide as ocean. Though the old man was lonely, he was a traveler who walked on the road of realizing his ideals. But he was not alone at the moment, for his will was so firm. The Old Man and the Sea has won the Nobel Prize at last, which is a comfort to the writer. 对海明威的⽼⼈与海的评价英⽂版篇⼆ the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre. My first impression of this story was from screen. It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the he-ro-in-e,though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot. I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven't read thewhole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didn't understand the story at that time. I didn't know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice. I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time. "Vessel crossed the end of the world, into the unknown sea, hanging on the side of the bow while wind and rain erosion-stricken still incomparably beautiful flag, banner, brandishing a Yunlong general words glittering - beyond the limit "This is the author of Hemingway's evaluation of his work" The Old Man and the Sea ". Life itself is an endless pursuit. It's a long road, difficult and full of bumpy, but as long as their indomitable courage and self-confidence to a heart to meet the challenge, he will always be a real winner! 对海明威的⽼⼈与海的评价英⽂版篇三 This book gives me a deep impression especially the description about the man’s braveness and persistence. When I was a high school student, I’ve finished this book in Chinese. But when I read it in English, I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us. May be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it. At least, for my part, that is true. Firstly, I would like to review some information about this book. Such as the background, major characters and the topic of it. The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribner's, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. The old man Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea is a character seen in many perspectives, as a hero, an ordinary fisherman, an unlucky old man, and a wise man. Throughout the novella he is made out as a person of motivation, passion, and hope. Despite what others do or do not think he is a man of action, and not one consumed by regret. The young and old villagers’ view of Santiago is an important one, but not a differentiating one. The villagers are split into two groups. The older fishermen that respect Santiago and wish him luck, and the younger fishermen that see him as little more than bad luck. While neither group is particularly important to the plot, each of their views sets an ambiance of Santiago forthcoming adventure. Without their views Santiago would be little more than a lucky old fisherman. Santiago has a resolute grip upon reality and lives by it. He sees himself as a man with little direction but enough determination and experience to live. He chose not to see what others thought but instead lived by how he perceived the world. His constant struggles and his persistent resolve to overcome the marlin and himself show his earnest desires to live and fish. The boy is a crucial element to Santiago world. Mandolin is always at the edge of Santiago mind when he thinks of convenience. At times with the fish, Santiago thinks to the boy and then to his own lack of ability. He may deny it,but at times it is his relationship with the boy that both makes him realize he needs help, and compels him to go on. Christian imagery and concepts are important assets to the old fisherman personality. He is seen as a kind man, and although expresses his frustration towards certain points, only conveys his anger towards the evil representation of the sharks. His kind, infinite eyes, and he carrying his mast like Jesus and his cross only augment his Christ-like personage. His loneliness and greatness are both shown as Mandolin is assigned a new boat after 40 days with Santiago, the same length of time as Christ spent in the wilderness. Santiago change at the end of the novella turns him into almost a universal hero. By being at sea, his ventures were never limited and the events of the story just seemed to happen. After he rebukes himselffor his arrogance with the marlin, Santiago goes home and dreams of the lions playing in Africa, signaling a cycle of a child-like rebirth through Mandolin. Throughout the story many aspects can be found about Santiago personality merely by the content of his 3-day fight with the marlin. The ideology that encompasses the story is only consumed by Santiago pure will to persevere. Certainly Santiago is a man of many themes and personality traits.。

Impression of the old man and the sea
I wanted to write a passage about another book called life of pi, but that book is a little weird. Then I chose this o ne, which I’ve just finished the second time.
This novel is so good that I read it twice. I believe that most people have read it before, so I’ll omit the summary.
It is not important whether Santiago (the fisherman) brings back the marlin at last, but the process is valuable. Remember that famous sentence? “Man is not made for defeat...A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. The sea is both kind and cruel, but Santiago cannot be defeated by whatever misfortunes befall him. Just like we are in this feminine and masculine world, right? We are really tired of the dark and boring competition, but we have to prove that we can be a better person if we are brave. We cannot withdraw when facing something bad, the best thing is to try hard to change it no matter how awful it is. Then you are satisfied, for you’ve done what you could do.
Nowadays, we youngsters are so weak. once we meet with a small problem, we want to escape. Actually, there are no big dills if we are strong enough to face it and challenge it! Sometimes we need to be obstinate to fulfill our goals and dreams.
Well, that is the faultily impression of the old man and the sea.
