Jichang Garden
Jichang Garden(1)寄畅园的概况(A briefing about Jichang Garden)Here we are at the Jichang Garden. Let‘s get off the bus here. The Jichang Garden is one of China‘s most exquisite gardens. First built in Ming dynasty (1368 – 1644), it has a history of nearly 500 years. The garden was first created by a native of Wuxi called Qin Jin, a retired high-ranking official of the Ming Dynasty. He bought the abode for monks of Huishan Monastery. Mr. Qin Jin‘s style was Feng Shan, literally meaning ‗Phoenix Hill‘. So he gave his alternative dwelling a humble name ‗Temporary Dwelling (Lodging) in Phoenix Valley‘.It was not until the third master of the garden Qin Yao (秦耀), great-grand nephew of Qin Jin, inherited the property, did the garden undergo fundamental transformation from a virtually (practically) untouched natural landscape into an ingeniously designed (laid out) and elaborately wrought garden.Qin Yao was also a high-ranking official in the imperial court in Beijing. He was framed up and dismissed from office. (Qin Yao was pushed out of the imperial bureaucracy by a rival political faction.) Shamed and tired of treachery and backstabbing of political life and thrown into disgrace (and utter disappointment at the sinister officialdom), he decided to return to Wuxi, his hometown and devoted his energies to creating a comfy home. Thus, he found desirable ways to express his feelings, in mountains and waters, flowers and trees, which were mentally and philosophically fulfilling.Today, this garden is on the ‗Cultural Heritage Protecting List‘ of the State Council of the Central Government of China.Ladies and gentlemen, presumably you are wondering why this garden is protected by the central government? Besides its long history, the garden‘s artistic features played a decisive role in the government‘s decision to have it protected. It has four outstanding artistic features:1. Borrowing scenes (借外景)The beautiful scenes of neighboring Xishan and Huishan are borrowed into the garden.2. Flow of water (置水体)A tail of the Brocade Convergence Ripples is screened off by an arcade bridge拱桥at the northeast corner, making people feel puzzled to think where the water has gone, thereby adding a limitless depth to it. And with the Seven-star Bridge making a severance断绝of it,the stretch of the water appears no longer tedious and monotonous.3. Rockeries (堆假山)The rockeries and artificial hills have been textured to resemble Huishan Mountain in magnificence and so people say ―though they are man-made yet look like things wrought by nature.‖The use of Taihu Rocks in building rockeries is another characteristic of Chinese garden architecture.4. Conducting spring water (引泉水)The water in the Eight-tone Brooklet is drawn from the Second Best Spring under Heaven. As the spring water goes down the brooklet it produces a rhythmical ding dong sound as if striking a metal-piece, leather-piece, wood-strip, string-cord, stone, bamboo, gourd and earthen musical instruments, a total of (as many as) eight musical tones playing in unison. It produces an effect of resonance as if (though) it were in a natural deep valley. Believe me or not, let‘s go and have a look. Seeing is believing (to see is to believe).(2) 入园讲解(Entering the garden and starting to conduct the visit/tour)Now let‘s get into the garden.在前花园(At the front courtyard)This is the front courtyard. These two bigger trees are acacia trees. (Because last summer was too hot and too dry, the bad weather delayed their blossoming last autumn). Do you have any idea about this kind of tree? It is an ever-green bearing tiny fragrant flowers in silver or golden colors. The blossom season is around mid-September. Local people always try to collect these tiny flowers and preserve them in sugar or honey. The preserved flowers are used to be added into rice wine and rice (cakes) puddings as a scent.During the Qing dynasty, two emperors, Kangxi and Qianlong visited the garden on several occasions and they were so impressed by it. Although most buildings and structures of the garden were destroyed, then restored or rebuilt time and again in history, the garden‘s basic layout has been beautifully preserved and still retains its classical style and atmosphere(氛围).This is a presentation of this garden in Chinese, but I‘m sure you can read this number (what year this is), can‘t you? (Pointing at the year in Roman numeral). This presentation tells the condensed history of this garden, just like the preface of a book. This garden used to be part of a monastery. It became the private garden of a defense minister in Ming Dynasty (1368 –1644). During its heyday, the garden was honored by 13 visits by twoemperors in the Qing Dynasty during their inspection tours to the south of Yangtze River. The exquisite(高雅,细腻)layout of the garden and its atmosphere never failed to arouse the appreciation and admiration of the emperors. They wrote poems, drawing paintings, writing epigraph for the garden owner. Emperor Qianlong appreciate d the garden architecture(建筑学,建筑)of this garden so much that he could not help ordering his men to build a replica (copy) in the Summer Palace in Beijing by the name ‗Garden of Harmonious Interests‘(谐趣园). That garden is still in good condition today. In ancient times many men of letters and retired high-ranking officials tended to give their residences humble names just like this one. The four characters up over there on the plaque mean ―the Phoenix Nest in A Valley‖. Phoenix happened to be the title of the original owner of the garden. Now let‘s take a look at t he sitting room. A sitting room like this was for male guests only in the feudal times. The furniture is made of intricately-carved mahogany in Qing style, which gives you a feeling of weightyness. Today they appear overly detailed and ponderous (cumbersome, unwieldly, clumsy). You can always find four things in a typical classic Chinese garden: pool or lake, bridge, pavilion and rockery. Of course deciduous trees and evergreen trees are often grown. Most deciduous trees are flowering trees, such as Chinese magnolia, peach, plum, etc. To make the lake look brimming over with life, people often raise gold carp, lotus and lilies in it. It is not uncommon that covered walkways are built to link up pavilions, towers, kiosks and homestead. Thus, the owner occupants and their guests could be sheltered from the sun or the rain when they took a stroll in the garden. Nowadays, we tend to ignore a basic fact that in ancient times, all the shoes were made of cloth or other materials in China, which were not waterproof at all. They get wet easily if the floor or ground is wet with rainwater. A dry and paved footpath in a private garden was desirable to the owner in the past and was as important and luxurious as a freeway to modern day folks. This garden has them all. Please step this way. These two characters are ‗ai yue‘ in Chinese.Literally meaning: ‗blocking the moon light‘.N ow here we are at the ‗garden in side the ga rden‘. That house is called the ―Hall of propriety‖ where female guests and their children were to kill time and have fun.It is widely believed that most feudalistic rulers and scholars in ancient China followed the doctrines of Confucius and Mencius. One of the morals they commonly believed in was: ‗仁者乐山智者乐水‘Meaning: ‗The benevolent seeks sensuous pleasure in mountains and the wise pursues gratification in waterfalls and flowing streams. It is a way of appreciating the beauty of the natural scenery. The above statement can also be expressed the other way round:‗The mountains seduce the benevolent, while the fountains and the waterfalls captivate the wise.‘This idea was compatible with the Taoist creed that ‗human beings are an integral part of nature‘. I believe that this idea is to be easily ac cepted by today‘s Green Peace Organization. This is a man-made hill piled up with the dirt dug out in the construction of that lake. All the rocks were moved here. Those grayish rocks are limestone. Their arrangement looks like a herd of lions performing lion dance on stage. This is a man made grotto. It has a very poetic name --八音涧in Chinese. In English it means an eight-tone grotto. Because when a stream of water flows downstream, it gives off different sounds at each turn and each dropping. And you can hear the melodious(音调优美的)sound made by the spring water running (flowing) downstream through the rockeries. This is not a real hillock. It was piled up with the dirt from digging of the lake. If you look from this direction, the man-made hill is very low in altitude. But when we walk to the ‗Knowing Fish Pavilion‘ and look back, this man-made hill really looks like an extension of that mountain range. From the layout of the garden you can tell that the owner followed the Taoist doctrines. Taoists regard themselves as part of nature. The owner of the garden wanted to live harmoniously with nature. If the scenery is beautiful, people would tend to regard themselves as part of the natural picture while visitors would relax themselves more than ever before.Let‘s make a photo stop here. This is the best spot to enjoy the view of the garden. This garden is only one hectare in size. But it looks much larger to you than its real size. How isthis? It is because the garden artistically ―borrows‖ the landscape from outside to add to its own. You see, the wall is hidden in the ancient trees. When you look from this side, you can‘t see the boundary of the garden at all. But you can see Xishan Hill with a pagoda atop it. Then you get the impression that that hill is part of this garden, and this garden must be very large though the garden is tucked in a hilly retreat. As this garden is quite small in size so the designer tried every means to make the garden look seemingly big (spacious). The brid ge was built so low deliberately. It‘s just above the water surface like stepping stones. If it was an arch bridge, the garden view would get spoiled as you step on the hump of the bridge. Since an arch bridge is much higher, it would cut the small lake into two separate smaller parts. (With an arch bridge spanning over there, you can‘t see the edge of the lake.) A visitor would think the water makes a turn there and the lake‘s boundary is somewhere fa rther away. The highlight to visit the garden is to have a stroll around this lake—‗Brocade Convergence Lake‘锦汇漪. So named because it is an ornamental lake with a variety / an assortment of sights around it. As a visitor roams around the lake, he is able to enjoy Kaleidoscopic(万花筒般的,五花八门的)views with a changing backdrop and its intriguing image (its colorful reflections) in the lake water. This pavilion is called ―Knowing Fish Pavilion‖. It derived its name from a conversation between two ancient great philosophers, Mr. Zhuangzi and Mr. Huizi. One day, when they were watching fish swimmi ng in a brook Zhuangzi claimed, ―Look, how happy the fish are.‖ Huizi retorted: ―You are not a fish, how do you know they are happy?‖ Zhuangzi talked back: ―You‘re not me, how do you know I don‘t know?‖ The dialogue indicates that the garden owner Qin Y ao‘s sympathy was with Zhuangzi who held that human beings and other lives could know each other. Zhuangzi was an influential figure in Taoism School in ancient China and they advocated that human beings should coexist with other lives in nature in harmony. This slab is called ―Sad Chessboard‖. The slab itself has nothing special to talk about, but it witnessed a few interesting stories. One of the stories goes like this: Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty liked playing chess very much. When the emperor was in the court, nobody dared (had the courage) to match him, because his personal dignity allowed no challenges. One day disguised as a civilian, the emperor came here and played chess on this slab with a monk. The monk didn‘t know who he was and defe ated him. The emperorwas extremely disheartened at this incident. He named this slab ―Sad Chessboard‖. Of course, this is only one of many ideas about the origin of the name of the stone table. Just like nowadays that we can read a lot of features about big stars and dignitaries on internet and tabloids if they make a stopover at some place. Let alone the emperor. Here I have a story somewhat opposite to the aforesaid one. It goes like this:Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty was fond of tours everywhere. Once when he made an inspection tour to the south he had a game of chess with the monk of Huishan Temple under an arbor in Jichang Garden. Though the monk could play better than Qianlong he dared not to win, so he feigned a poor move. Though the emperor won the game he felt displeased and remained in sulk after it. And according to this the latecomers named the arbor ‗yu pan‘ to mean an ―Unpleasant Game of Chess‖.However, the fact doesn‘t go absolutely like these two stories. Acc ording to the notes of Jichang Garden jotted down under the reign of Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty, ―… going along the bridge to the south we see here a corridor covered with old wisteria and trees in green, which is as long as Yupan Corridor…‖ That i s to say, the long corridor in the east of the garden is canopied by old trees, old wisteria and vines in verdure, and therefore it was called ―Yupan‖. Yupan consists of two Chinese characters. Yu can mean sad, sulk, or exuberant and flourish. Pan means a table, a plate.Which is true and which‘s false? Perhaps they are all far-fetched analogy (类似,类推) or mere hearsays. Anyhow, nobody could tell it for certain. Better let you people (visitors) to make your (their) judgment of it / decide yourselves.(音调优美的)sound made by the spring water flowing downstream through the rockeries.。

Although I loved reading, I found it quite difficult. My mum had an American friend who bought me this book because she knew how much I struggled with spelling, and she thought it would make me laugh. It really did. And it stuck in my memory a lot. Even now, it’s one of those books that never seems to age. I love the drawings—they planted a seed in my head somewhere that pictures and words go together and can be really funny.Silly Verse for Kids by Spike MilliganThis book is so tiny and thin, but I loved that it had all these silly poems inside with rich attractive drawings—and it made me want to write rhymes, and to have a go at drawing. After buying this in a local bookshop, I started reading it. And after finishing reading it, I started writing my own poetry. I’m always including silly poems in my books and I think that’s definitely down to the influence of this book.Jaws by Peter BenchleyThis book has a particular meaning for me. In school, I h ad a teacher who didn’t have a television. It made me think when I had to come up with a story for my homework, I could just change the plot of Jaws a little and he’d never know. Good grades are a result of multiple factors, everything from the child’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major, mostly ignored, influencing factor is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exerc ise can improve a child’s cognitive abilities, health, and academic performance significantly.According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training did not have the same result on the brain. The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety. It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day.In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted. Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable option but as an important educational concern. 6.What factor is often forgotten when it comes to good grades?A.Child’s High IQ.B.A good environment.C.Physical health. D.The hours spent on learning.7.Which of the following exercises is best for learning and memory?A.Regular aerobic exercise. B.Balance exerciseC.Muscle exercise. D.Resistance training8.How does exercise influence thinking indirectly?A.By releasing growth factors in large numbers.B.By influencing the growth of new blood vessels.C.By affecting the survival of new brain cells.D.By improving a person’s mood and sleep q uality.9.What does the underlined word “dispensable”mean in the last paragraph?A.Unique. B.Universal. C.Unusual. D.Unnecessary. 10.What is the passage mainly about?A.Mental health should never be ignored.B.Physical education class is really a good option.C.Exercise may bring about good academic grades.D.Different exercises have different results on the brain.Since Zhao Hongshan’s dermal filler injection (皮肤填充注射) four years ago—he has spent around 80,000 yuan on his face. “Getting plastic surgeri es is just as normal as body building. But a newcomer will soon be running after them at their heels. 16 It is more than ten years since they did better than America to become the most productive car-makers in the world. China is producing the best cars in the world, and on the way to controlling car production. 17China has gradually built its car-making capabilities during different periods. 18 And then its state-owned companies reached arrangements with western makers like General Motors in the 1980s. This produced cars that were far better designed, and soon China’s roads were becoming busy with western clones.19 It still pays relatively low wages and has millions of skilled workers. Skilled workers are important to reduce the costs because they make vehicles that need fewer rebuilds. Some Chinese vehicles in the past ten years haven’t had the design expected by western buyers, so haven’t sold in enough cars in Europe to worry the western makers.20 Chinese-designed and built vehicles are not far behind in their design, and starting to enter European markets. Xpeng is one Chinese start-up that only produces electric vehicles. Having sold well in China, it is making its first moves into Europe via Norway with its G3 model. The next revolution in car industry is replacing petrol vehicles with electric. Then on April 22 that year, Earth Day was created to celebrate our planet, tell people about environmental problems, and encourage them to take action. Now Earth Day is celebrated all around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate(气候)change, plastic pollution, and deforestation(毁林). But we can make a difference. 薛非英语二作文
薛非英语二作文Xue's Non-English Writing Experience。
As a non-native English speaker, writing in English can be a daunting task. However, with practice and perseverance, it is possible to improve and even excel in writing in a language that is not your mother tongue. My own experience with writing in English started whenI was in high school. At that time, my English skills were limited to basic grammar and vocabulary, and I had never written anything more than a short paragraph in English. However, I was determined to improve my English writing skills, as I knew it would be essential for my futurestudies and career.I started by reading extensively in English, bothfiction and non-fiction. This helped me to improve my vocabulary and get a better understanding of sentence structure and grammar. I also started writing short essaysand journal entries in English, and asked my English teacher to provide feedback on my writing. One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning to express my ideas clearly and concisely in English. In my native language, I was used to using more words to convey my thoughts, but in English, I had to learn to be more precise and economical with my words. I also had to learn to use idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs, which are often used in English but are not commonly used in my native language.Over time, my English writing skills improved, and I became more confident in my ability to express myself in English. I continued to read extensively in English, and also took courses in academic writing and creative writing to further improve my skills. One of the most important lessons I learned in my journey to improve my English writing skills is the importance of practice and persistence. Writing in a non-native language can be challenging, but with regularpractice and a willingness to learn from mistakes, it is possible to become a proficient writer in English. In conclusion, my experience with writing in English as a non-native speaker has been both challenging and rewarding. It has taught me the importance of perseverance, practice, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. With these qualities, anyone can improve their English writing skills and become a proficient writer in a language that is not their mother tongue.。

A Briefing on Wuxi
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen:
Welcome to Wuxi. On behalf of Wuxi China Travel Service (CTS), I’d like to extend our warmest possible welcome to you all. My name is Wang Weimin. Wang is my family name and Weimin is my given name. As far as I know, westerners may have difficulties in making out our Chinese names, so you may call me Jerry, my English name. I’m a tour guide with Wuxi CTS. Our driver is Mr. Yang. Both of us will be at your service (disposal) during your stay in Wuxi. We will do our best to make your trip to Wuxi a very pleasant and comfortable one, even though it’s a very short one. If there is anything we can do for you please just let us know without hesitation.
Now our bus is heading for the hotel. The name of the hotel is called Hubin Hotel that is located on Lake Taihu. It takes about 15 minutes to get there if the traffic is smooth. Now please allow me to give you a brief presentation about my hometown, Wuxi, not [wuksi] as you might call it.
Wuxi is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, on the southern part of Jiangsu Province. It lies in the middle of Shanghai-Nanjing Railway; with shanghai 128 km to its southeast, Nanjing 183 km to its northwest. The city proper of Wuxi is astride the Grand Canal that runs from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south with a total length of 1,794 km, roughly 1,200 miles. Since tomorrow you are going to have a boat excursion on the canal, I’ll give you a detailed presentation about it tomorrow morni ng.
Wuxi covers an area of 4,650 sq. km, including Wuxi city proper, Jiangyin and Yixing. Its combined population is 5.12 million, of whom 1.5 million live in the city proper. You can tell Wuxi is a densely populated area. Although China is slightly bigger in size than the United States, most of China’s 1.3 billion people live compactly in a 1,500-kilometer strip along the eastern and southern coasts. To help you Americans understand the density of population in this area, I have to round up the entire UA population into the area east of the Mississippi River and then multiply it by four. So you just imagine.
People here speak Wuxi dialect that is similar to that of Shanghai’s. In this part of the country, nearly every city or country has its own dialect. People in neighbouring cities or countries can understand each other pretty well, but not farther away. This is why our
government advocates speaking mandarin. In spoken Chinese, some of the dialects can be so different from mandarin to a Chinese as it is to a foreigner. Fortunately, Chinese dialects do follow the same written system by and large. A Cantonese speaker grows up reading the same textbooks and newspapers as a Mandarin speaker does.
Wuxi enjoys a mild climate and four clear-cut seasons. The annual mean temperature is 15.5℃and it has approximately 1,200 mm precipitation (rainfall) a year. The best season in this area is spring. Not like Beijing, the fall is the best one. Summer is hot and humid. Fall is like that in North America. Winter is cold. We have snow here, wet snow usually. The lowest temperature is -8℃. In the past decade or so, winter has become warmer and shorter due to the green house effect. As one of the cradles of China’s national industry and commerce in the past, Wuxi today is one of the fifteen economic centers in China. Its main industries are electronics, cotton textile, silk, pharmaceutical, metallurgical, machine building, chemical, ceramic and other industries. The gross domestic product (GDP) in Wuxi reached RMB 150 billion yuan last year, ranking 9th in China. Due to its highly developed industry and commerce, Wuxi is also nicknamed “little Shanghai”. Wuxi today is not only an industrial city, but also a famous tourist destination. We have picturesque scenery around Lake Taihu and many other beautiful parks and gardens, such as Xihui Park, Turtle Head Park, Liyuan Garden, Plum Garden to name a few (and so on). We have a number of specialties that are famous nation wide. Some of them are even renowned internationally, such as Wuxi rice, white bait from Lake Taihu, honey and juicy peach, Huishan clay figurine, Yixing terra cotta teapot, cultivated freshwater pearl, etc. Therefore Wuxi has long been called a land of fish and rice, in your word “a land of milk and honey”.。
