onalarchitecturalcompetitionfortheaquaticcenterproject.Thewatercubewas speciallydesignedandbuiltbyaconsortiummadeupofPTwarchitects(anaustra lianarchitecturefirm),arupinternationalengineeringgroup,cScEc(chinaState constructionEngineeringcorporation),andccdi(chinaconstructiondesignint ernational)ofShanghai.Thewatercube'sdesignwas initiatedbyateameffort:thechinesepartnersfeltasquarewasmoresymbolictoc hinesecultureanditsrelationshiptotheBird'sneststadium,whiletheSyd neybasedpartnerscameupwiththeideaofcoveringthe'cube'withb ubbles,symbolisingwater.itshouldbenotedthatcontextuallythecubesymboli sesearthwhilstthecircle(representedbythestadium)representsheaven.Hence symbolicallythewatercubereferenceschinesesymbolicarchitecture. comprisingasteelspaceframe,itisthelargestETFEcladstructureintheworldwi thover100,000m2ofETFEpillowsthatareonly0.2mm(1/125ofaninch)intotal thickness[8].TheETFEcladdingallowsmorelightandheatpenetrationthantra ditionalglass,resultingina30%decreaseinenergycosts.
