Unit 2 Poems

Few people are aware that Waterloo Bridge, crossed by thousands of daily commuters(通勤者) and celebrated as a London landmark, was mainly built by a female workforce. There are no written or photographic records of the women who built the bridge since the construction company that built it closed in the 1980s and with it went all the records. What’s left is anecdotal evidence, kept alive by the tourist boat captains who have called it the Ladies’Bridge.During the Second World War, with the majority of the active male labor force away at the front, women increasingly took on traditionally male roles. By 1944, 25,000 women were working in the construction industry, carrying out backbreaking tasks. These women were permitted to carry out this exhausting and dangerous work on the basis that it would only be temporary and that their pay would be lower than that of men. So the trend in women working in construction and engineering did not continue after the war.September sees a series of events celebrating the unknown work of the large female workforce. Musician Claudia Molitor has created a 45minute musical entitled “the Singing Bridge”,which runs at Somerset House from 9to 25 September. In late September, the “Light up the Ladies’Bridge”event sees the National Theatre’s fly tower lit up by large scale photographic projections(投影) of female construction workers working in construction during World War Ⅱ.Let’s all celebrate the women who have helped to build the cities in which we live.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 Poems

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons —why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文,讨论了现代建筑是否应该和古老的历史建筑建在一起。

experience the many feelings that music can inspire.Andersson fell in love with music as a child. She sang in school choirs and musicals starting in first grade, began studying piano at age seven, and started posing at age nine.Although her school district had no orchestra, she says,“I bought many recordings of the worl d’s great orchestras and conductors and listened to them for hours on end.”During a concert, the audience sees the back of a conductor and the arm movements she or he uses to lead the orchestra. What audiences do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance—first alone, and then in rehearsals(排练) with the orchestra.Months before a concert,Andersson studies a piece of music by playing it on the piano. She decides how she wants each section to sound.Should it be fast or slow?Loud or soft? She listens to recordings, reads about the poser’s life, and reviewshistorical events that would have influenced the poser. Her goal is to recreate the music as the poser intended. Each instrument contributes unique sounds to a musical performance.Although it is not necessary for conductors to know how to play all of the instruments, they must be familiar with the range and sound of each instrument in the orchestra. To help young musicians understand how to play the music,Andersson might tell them to imagine a ship being tossed(颠簸) by Unit 2 PoemsⅠ.阅读理解(2017·浙江高三五校联考第一次考试)At 27,after serving in World War Ⅱ,I dreamed of owning a piece of land.So I moved from central Illinois to Shelbina,Missouri, and bought 236 acres for $6,000.The plot of land was situated on a dirt road and was half farmland and half trees, with an old house that had no running water or electricity.Obviously,it was not what you’d call prime real estate. But it was mine.I was alone for the first time in my life, and I found it liberating. My days were filled from dawn until dusk with plowing and planting corn.Dinnertime came andwent, and I barely remembered to eat.I wouldn’t say I was a great success at farming in Missouri. However, when I went to the store to buy some plowshares,I met a nice woman named Claudette working behind the counter.I also ran into her at St.Mary’s Catholic Church in Shelbina each week.I found out later that her manager kept asking her about “that tall boy (and eligible bachelor) from Illinois living out in the country in an old house with no water,no electricity and no housekeeper.”Claudette and her sister soon visited my farm and put up some curtains. To show my appreciation,I took Claudette out for a ride in my 2-ton Studebaker truck. We marriedin 1954 and have now been together for more than 62 years!I later sold the Missouri farm for a $3,500 profit and bought 40 acres in Illinois. For many reasons, buying the Missouri farm was a good idea.I will always cherish memories of owning the farm and meeting my beloved.【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文。

七选五From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often:ability, money, and time.1.Money is a topic I’ll save for another day.So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule.1.Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there’s nothing ready to eat.So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook?Do you have the right materials already?2.2.Make your time worth it.When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most ofit and save yourself time later on.Are you making one loaf of bread?3. It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.3.4.

3.C 根据下文“It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something.”

4.A 根据下文“It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes...”

5.F 根据下文“And don’t let a busy schedule...”
