[[高三英语试题]]江苏2009年高考英语任务型阅读精选试题(11-20)

2009年江苏高考任务型阅读精选试题二(11-20)11In the past 100 years Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S. minority. As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming . Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian Culture that promotes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education. Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they form a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social separation. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.12The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illnesses is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 60 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives(添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these additives which cause cancer remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the13Are your children being bullied on the Internet and you don’t kno w what to do about it? You are not alone. One in four children in the United Kingdom was the victim of online bullying in 2007. Cyberbullying(电脑化欺辱)is yet another problem that parents and children are facing in this new Internet age.Cyberbullying involves the use of information and technology such as e-mail, instant messaging, and personal web sites that are used to support conscious, repeated, and hostile(敌对的) behavior by one or more people with the intent to harm others.According to one victim, the difference between being bullied at school and being bullied on the Internet is that you cannot get away from cyberbullying as easily. Cyberbullying follows you, even after you get home from school. There is hope. Here are some tips to help you protect your children against cyberbullying.Make sure your children do not respond to rude and troublesome e-mails, messages, and postings. Keep a record of them in case you need proof. Call law enforcement and inform your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if necessary.Use web sites that translate the lingoes(行话) your children are sending or receiving so that you can understand the words that are being used in e-mails and chat rooms. If your children continue to receive troublesome e-mails, have them delete their current accounts and open a new one. This new e-mail address should only be given to a few people they can trust with it.If your children are receiving troublesome messages through instant messaging, help them make use of the “block” or “ban” feature. This feat ure can be used to block certain individuals from being able to reach your child. If you have found that a cyberbully has set up a web site that is bullying your child, contact your ISP and, if necessary, also inform law enforcement to try to get that web site removed.Get your child’s school involved. Learn what the school’s policy on cyberbullying is, and14If your family is like many in the United States, unloading the week’s groceries includes hauling a case or two of bottled water into your home. On your way to a soccer game or activity, it’s easy to grab a cold one right out of the fridge, right? But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment. In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world, adding 29 billion water bottles a year to the problem. In order to make all these bottles, manufacturers use 17 million barrels of crude oil. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.Imagine a water bottle filled a quarter of the way up with oil. That’s about how much oil was needed to produce the bottle. So why don’t more people drink water straight from the kitchen faucet? Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them than water out of the tap, but that’s not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the faucet is safe. There is also growing concern that chemicals in the bottles themselves may leach into the water.People love the convenience of bottled water. But maybe if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a refillable steel container instead of plastic.Plastic bottle recycling can help—instead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into items like carpeting or cozy fleece clothing.Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as trash onthe land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate.Water is good for you, so keep drinking it. But think about how often you use water bottles, and see if you can make a change.Betty McLaughlin, who runs an organization called the Container Recycling Institute, says we should try using fewer bottles: “If you take one to school in your lunch, don’t throw it away—bring it home and refill it from the tap for the next day. Keep track of how many times you refill a bottle before you recycle it.”And yes, you can make a difference. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.15The Hong Kong government is set to overhaul(革新) its immigration policy with the aim of making it easier for mainland and overseas talents to live and work in the city. This is a welcome step because it will remove what is widely seen as a major hurdle to Hong Kong’s efforts to attract qualified immigrants to help its development. To sustain the growth of the services sector, which accounts for nearly 10 percent of Hong Kong’s GDP, it is necessary to continuously expand the pool of talents in various fields. Efforts to attract mainland and overseas talents to Hong Kong are taking on special urgency not only because of fierce competition from other cities, particularly Singapore, but also the rapidly aging population resulting from years of low or negative birthrates.Hong Kong enjoys certain distinct advantages over many Asian cities in the competition for talents. Beyond its vibrant economy, underlined by a free market environment, Hong Kong has a combination of some of the most distinctive elements of Chinese and Western cultures. Hong Kong is as exciting as many other Asian boomtowns, and yet it is no less efficient than a typical European city with a muchsmaller population. Housing costs are high, but no higher than those in other financial centers. For international banks and multinational corporations, housing costs are a concern only when the opportunity to make money begins to dry up. And this situation is not happening in Hong Kong as the local economy, riding the boom on the mainland, is rapidly expanding. It is within this context that the government takes the lead to revise its immigration policy, which calls for, among other things, the establishment of a one-stop service center to process all applications under various migrant schemes. This means that an applicant will in future need to submit only one form for processing. Other changes to the policy include the removing of the age restrictions and lowering of experience requirements. Under the present scoring system used to vet applicants, those who are older than 50 and those with less than five years of work experience win no points in their respective categories. The details of the proposed changes have not been announced. But according to a government official16Much of our good health depends on the cooperation between substances. When they work together, chemical reactions take place smoothly. Body systems are kept in balance. Some of the most important helpers in the job of good health are the substances we call vitamins.Vitamin A is needed to produce a light-sensitive substance in the eyes. People who do not get enough vitamin A cannot see well in the dark. The best source of vitamin A is fish liver oil. It is also found in the yellow part of eggs. In addition, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A.Vitamin B-1 is also called thiamine. It changes starchy (含淀粉的) foods into energy. It also helps the heart and nervous system work smoothly. Without it, we would be weak and would not grow. Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in other foods. These include beans and peas, nuts and meat and fish.Vitamin B-12 is needed so folic acid can do its work. Together, they help produce red blood cells. Without them, a person suffers from anemia (贫血症). Vitamin B-12 is found naturally in foods such as eggs, meat, fish and milk products.Vitamin C is necessary for strong bones and teeth, and for healthy blood vessels. It also helps wounds heal quickly. The body stores very little vitamin C. So we must get it every day in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked cabbage.17Rising Grain Prices Panic Developing WorldGovernments around the world have taken effective measures in recent weeks to control their countries’ supplies of rice. The price of grains—corn, wheat, and rice—has been rising since 2005 under pressure from farmers who would rather plant crops for biofuels than for food. The sharpest increase has been this year, with the price of Thai rice nearly doubling since January, to $60 per metric ton. Some analysts expect that price to reach $1,000 in the next three months.Tang Min, a former chief economist for the Asian Development Bank, said the price increase is the inevitable consequence of supply and demand. “The world population is increasing, but the increase of the planting of rice has not been as fast,” he sai d. “Without the oil price increasing substantially, the corn price will not increase. Without corn prices increasing quickly, the rice price will not rise.”Despite efforts by governments to increase wages and introduce food subsidies (津贴), price increases and shortages have led to violent clashes along supply lines, in food distribution centers and at supermarkets. To encourage farmers to go back to planting food, China, Indonesia and other countries are increasing their minimum compensation to farmers who grow grains. In China, the government is concerned that the price increase is already leading to upsetting incidents. In August 2007, a supermarket in the inland city of Chengdu decreased the price of eggs from more than 4 yuan to 3.2 yuan—about 46 cents—to cater to shoppers. Thousands of people showed up at the front door, and four were injured during what the domestic media called “scare buying”.In October, a Shanghai-based chain supermarket put five-liter bottles of cooking oil up for sale at the discount price of 30.8 yuan—$4.39, about $2.85 lower than the usual price. Five minutes after the store opened, 19 people were hurt in the rush to buy.The jump in food prices has had a big effect on developing countries because food accounts for a much larger percentage of overall consumption. In China, it is almost 30 percent, while in Vietnam it is 40 percent and in India 50 percent. To calm increasingly concerned Chinese consumers the government has frozen the prices of some grains, meat and eggs. It also has run picture after picture in local newspapers of its “strategic reserves” of frozen meat, sacks of grain and barrels of18Have you ever wondered why there are so many skin colors in the world? Do you know why people living in particular areas usually have a certain color? Biology and history are the two reasons for this.Skin contains something called melanin, which determines a person’s skin color. The more melanin a person has, the darker his or her skin will be. The amount of and production of melanin are controlled by genetics, but can be affected by other things, such as sunlight. If a person lives in a place with strong sunlight, his or her skin will protect itself by producing more melanin, making the skin darker. In a place with less sunlight, a person’s body will produce less melanin, making the skin lighter.Skin color is also affected by another source—vitamin D. Humans all need vitamin D to build bones. People can get it by eating foods such as fish and milk, or from sunlight, which causes vitamin production in the skin. Melanin protects skin by absorbing sunlight, so sunlight absorbed by melanin cannot be used for vitamin D production. Therefore, a dark-skinned person will produce less vitamin D than a light-skinned person when they received the same amount of sunlight. The connection between vitamin D production and skin color is clear when we look at evolution. The earliest humans lived in Africa, their dark skin covered with hair. When they moved to places that had less sunlight, their bodies produced less vitamin D because of their dark skin. As a result, their skin made less melanin, so they could get enough sunlight to produce vitamin D. their skin gradually got lighter and they lost hair. Now, people who live in areas with strong sunlight, like Africa, have darker skin, while people living in other areas have lighter skin. The exception to this is the Inuit, who live in a place with little sunlight, but have dark skin because they eat a lot of fish and have enough vitamin D.Evolution has given us a rainbow of skin colors. Humans have always had melanin to determine our skin color. What has changed through history is the environment where we have lived. This has in turn changed our melanin production, and eventually, skin color.A World of Skin Color19The latest scientific studies show that the sun and the oceans have far more important influences on the world's climate than human activity. The head of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC), Professor Fred Singer, put forward a suggestion to the UN-sponsored(资助) IPCC. He said, “We donated our time and best efforts to produce this report out of concern that the IPCC gave us an incorrect reason for global-warming based on incomplete and faulty science.”“Global-warming news has led to the demand for unrealistic efficiency standards for cars, the construction of uneconomic wind and solar energy stations, the establishment of large production facilities for uneconomic fuels such as ethanol(乙醇) from corn, requirements that electric companies buy expensive power from so-called‘renewable’energy sources, and plans to reduce, at considerable expense, carbon dioxide from power plants.“While it is absolutely nothing wrong to increase energy efficiency, they cannot be regarded as a realistic means to control climate. In addition, policies have been developed that try to hide the huge cost of greenhouse gas controls.“Seeing science clearly misused to shape public policies that have the potential to cause serious economic harm, particularly on low-income groups, we choose to speak up for science at a time when too few people outside the scientific community know what is happening, and too few scientists who know the truth have to speak out against the IPCC.”NIPCC is what its name suggests: an international organization of non- governmental scientists and scholars who have come together to understand the causes and consequences of climate change.“Because we don't believe climate change is caused by human greenhouse gas, we are able to look at evidence the IPCC ignores. Because we do not work for any governments, we can make our research more scientific and fairer.”20Fairview Elementary School, Modesto, California, with some 1,000 students from kindergarten through sixth grade (about 10 percent of them Latino), has long suffered from discipline problems, poor test scores, and a near total lack of parental involvement. The difficulties aren't surprising given that many of the parents --- immigrants who work on farms or in factories --- speak little or no English.Since 2002, Fairview Elementary School has been a First Amendment School, one of 97 developed across the country by the First Amendment Center. The idea behindthe five-year-old program: To keep American strong, children must be trained to respect many points of view, weigh complex issues, and understand the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution(). As students learn good citizenship, the theory goes .They will develop the skills and attitude to do well academically.Fairview students enjoy "freedoms" other kids might envy (they voted not to wear school uniforms, for example). But the children don’t just exercise rights. They also accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class discussions, and keeping the school clean and safe (Fairview is considered the cleanest of 33 schools in its district). In one departure from tradion, there is no hand-raising in class. "Instead," says teacher Deborah Supnet, "we teach them to listen until the other child stops talking." It is called an exercise in respect.Last year, the number of students evaluated advanced in math doubled, from 15% to 30%. And Fairview graduates in their first middle-school mid-term exam averaged B grades ; 96 percent passed all subjects. Particularly encouraging to Principal Rob Williams , the school now has an a ctive parents’ group, Parents with a Voice. One of those parents, Laura Malagon, praises the program for convincing. her to play a more active role in her children’s school life.参考答案11 1. century 2. succeed /achieve 3.Reasons/ Explanations4. graduation /college 5 judgment 6. immediately/quickly7.influenced /affected 8. use 9. help / aid /assistance10. rooted / anchored/involved12 1. Animals Can Sense Natural Disasters (动物能预感到自然灾难)难度:*****词数:268 标准时间:5分钟完成时间:______ 正确数:______Among the dead in South Asia's tsunami① were many tourists at Sri Lanka's national wildlife park at Yala. But very few of the park's animals - elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and wild cats - appear to have died. There are theories that animals can sense natural disasters and flee to safety. First, it's possible that the animals may have heard the quake before the tsunami hit. The underwater rupture likely produced sound waves known as infrasound② or infrasonic sound. Humans can't hear infrasound, but many animals including dogs, elephants, tigers and pigeons can. A second early warning sign the animals might have sensed is ground vibration ③。

The massive quake would have produced vibrational waves known as Rayleigh waves. These vibrations move through the ground like waves move on the surface of the ocean but faster. They travel at ten times the speed of sound. The Rayleigh waves would have reached SriLanka hours before the water hit. Mammals, birds, insects and spiders can sense Rayleigh waves. So the animals at Yale might have felt the Rayleigh waves and then run to higher ground. But what about humans? While we can't hear infrasound, we can feel it, although we don't necessarily know we're feeling it. We also experience Rayleigh waves by special sensors in our joints, which exist just for that purpose. Sadly, it seems we don't pay attention to the information when we get it. Maybe we screen it out because there's so much going on before our eyes and in our ears. Humans have a lot of things on our minds and usually that works out OK.Notes:①tsunami n. 海啸②infrasound n. 次声③vibration n. 振动,颤动Choose the best answers according to the above:() 1. Why did few animals at Yala die when the tsunamis that caused a huge number of human deaths hit?A. Because the animals were staying at a higher place in the park.B. Because the animals were able to run much faster than human beings.C. Because human beings cannot hear the infrasonic sound.D. Because the animals might have picked up the danger signals and ran away.() 2. Which of the statements about "Ravleigh waves" is true?A. Rayleigh waves are massive vibrational waves that usually cause quakes or tsunamis.B. Rayleigh waves move on the ocean surface at a speed ten times that of sound waves.C. Rayleigh waves can be felt both by animals and human beings.D. Rayleigh waves, just like infrasonic sound, can only be felt by animals.() 3. When a tsunami hits, it is possible that ____A. we can't feel the infrasound so we can't be informed of the dangerB. we can feel Rayleigh waves as well as infrasound so we are able to escape the danger like animalsC. we were so busy with things on our minds that we feel neither infrasound nor Rayleigh wavesD. we think nothing of the information of its coming even though we can also get it() 4. What does the underlined word "that" in the last sentence refer to?A. Screening out the information.B. There being so much going on before our eyes and in our ears.C. Having a lot of things on our minds.D. Paying attention to the information.「解析」1. D 细节理解题。

附详解(医学类)(1)Northern Europeans spend a lot of time in their cold and cloudy winters planning their summer holidays. They are proud of their healthy color when they return home after the holiday. But they also know that a certain amount of sunshine is good for their bodies and general health. In ancient Greece people knew about the healing(治疗) powers of the sun, but this knowledge was lost. At the end of the nineteenth century a Danish doctor, Niels Finsen, began to study the effect of sunlight on certain diseases, especially diseases of the skin. He was interested not only in natural sunlight but also in artificially (人造地) produced rays. Sunlight began to play a more important part in curing sick people. A Swiss doctor,Auguste Rollier, made full use of the sun in his hospital at Lysine. Lysine is a small village high up in the Alps. The position is important: the rays of the sun with the greatest healing power are the infra-red (红外线的) and ultra-violet (紫外线的) rays; but ultra-violet rays are too easily lost in fog and the polluted air near industrial towns. Dr. Roller found that sunlight, fresh air and good food cure a great many diseases. He was particularly successful in curing certain forms of tuberculosis with his "sun-cure". There were a large number of children in Dr. Roller's hospital. He decided to start a school where sick children could be cured and at the same time continue to learn. It was not long before his school was full. In winter, wearing only shorts, socks and boots, the children put on their skis after breakfast and left the hospital. They carried small desks and chairs as well as their school books. Their teacher led them over the snow until they reached a slope which faced the sun and was free from cold winds. There they set out their desks and chairs, and school began. Although they wore hardly any clothes, Roller's pupils were very seldom cold. That was because their bodies were full of energy which they got from the sun. But the doctor knew that sunshine can also be dangerous. If,for example, tuberculosis is attacking the lungs, unwise sunbathing may do great harm. Today there is not just one school in the sun. There are several in Switzerland, and since Switzerland is not the only country which has the right conditions, there are similar schools in other places.1. According to the passage, when did sunlight begin to play a more important part in the treatment of disease?A. From ancient times.B. At the end of the nineteenth century.C. Not until this century.D. Only very recently.2. Why are a Danish doctor and a Swiss doctor mentioned in the second and third paragraphs?A. Because they both made use of sunlight to treat illness.B. Because they were the first people who used sunlight for treatment.C. Because they were both famous European doctors.D. Because they used sunlight in very different ways.3. Dr Roller set up a "sun-cure" school probably for the reason that _______.A. most children could stay in his hospitalB. children could study while being treatedC. the school was expected to be full of pupilsD. the school was high up in the mountains4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?A. "Sun-cure" schools are becoming popular everywhere.B. Switzerland is the only country where "sun-cure" schools are popular.C. Proper conditions are necessary for the running of a "sun-cure" school.D. "Sun-cure" schools are found in countries where there is a lot of sunshine.「答案与解析」本文介绍了利用日光治病的历史与发展。

2009年高考英语阅读理解训练50篇(1)1Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hor- mones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etC.In general the person feels excited and ready to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, ―Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.‖Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.1.―Damaging emotion‖ means that _________.A.the emotion is harmless B.the emotion is harmfulC.the feeling is very strong D.the feeling is hard2.What statement is right?A.Were you angry, you would be cancered (得癌症).B.Once you are angry, you must be cancered.C.Angry as you are often, you can't be cancered,D.Anger may cause you a cancer.3.Expressing anger violently _________ repressing it according to some scientists.A.is just the same as B.is more harmful thanC.is no better than D.is much better than4.According to the author, you'd better _________.A.never be angryB.cool it down before you express itC.laugh and laugh when you get angryD.admit you are wrong when you are angry二There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have ever taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities (复杂性) of spelling. If spelling becomes the only focal (焦点的) point of his teacher‘s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That‘s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: ―This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is terrible.‖ It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil‘s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted(省略) to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child‘s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child‘ s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation (动机) to seek improvement.1.Teachers are different in their opinions about _________.A.he difficulties in teaching spellingB.the role of spelling in general language developmentC.the complexities of the basic writing skillsD.the necessity of teaching spelling2.The underlined expression ―play safe‖ probably means ________.A.to write carefullyB.to do as teachers sayC.to use dictionaries frequentlyD.to avoid using words one is not sure of3.Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that ____________.A.students will be able to express their ideas more freelyB.students will have more confidence in writingC.students will have less trouble in correcting mistakesD.students will learn to be independent of teachers4.The author seems to think that the teacher‘s judgment on that sensitive piece of writing is __________.A.unfair B.reasonable C.foolish D.careless三Perhaps the most famous theory, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks--- we are not born with them.A baby has generally informed face features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around--- family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the US looks much alike.New Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that can not be explained by genetics (遗传学). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth are set. For many, this can be wellinto grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us.This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the US, for example, the south is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York States still less. Many southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people in Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less than people in small towns do. 1.Ray Birdwhistell believes that physical appearance ___________.A.has little to do with culture B.has much to do much cultureC.is ever changing D.is different from place to place 2.According to the passage, the final mouth shape is formed _________.A.before birth B.as soon as one‘s teeth are newly setC.some time after new teeth are set D.around 15 years old3.Ray Birdwhistell can tell what area of the US a person is from by _______.A.how much he or she smiles B.how he or she raise his or her eyebrowsC.what he or she likes best D.the way he or she talks4.People who live _________ are more friendly.A.in largely populated areas B.in New York CityC.in the country D.in the North四EFL TEACHERSSummer PostsOnce again we require 10 excellent TEFL Teachers for our summer program. She posted a picture of the president, wrote ―Kill Bush ‖ across the top and drew a sword stabbing his outstretched hand. She later replaced her page after learning in her eighth-grade history class that such threats are a federal offense. It was too late, Federal authorities had found the page and placed Wilson on their checklist. They finally reached her this week in her biology class. The 14—year—old was taken out of class Wednesday and questioned for about 15 minutes by two Secret Service agents. The incident has upset her parents, who said the agents should have included them when questioning their daughter. The teenager said the agents‘ questioning led her to tears. ―I wasn‘t dangerous,‖ said Wilson, an honor student who describes herself as politically enthusiastic. ―I‘m a peace-loving person. I‘m against the war in Iraq. I‘m not going to kill the president.‖Her mother, Kirstie Wilson, said two agents showed up at the family‘s home Wednesday afternoon, questioned her and promised to return once her daughter was home from school. After they left, Kirstie Wilson sent a next message to her daughter‘s call phone, asking her to come straight home and telling her that two men from the secret service wanted to talk with her.But moments later, Kirstie Wilson received a text message from her daughter saying agents had pulled her out of class.Julia Wilson said the agents threatened her, saying she could be sent to court for making the threat. ―They yelled at me a lot,‖ she said. ―They were unnecessarily mean.‖Wilson and her parents said the agents were justified in questioning her over her posting. But they said the agents went too far by not waiting until she was out of school and the agents should have more quickly figured out they weren‘t dealing with a real danger.Assistant Principal Paul Robinon said the agents gave him the impression the girl‘s mother knew they were planning to question her daughter at school. There is no legal requirement that parents be notified.―This has been an on-going problem.‖said Ann Brick, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union in San Francisco.Former governors Pete Wilson and Gray Davis vetoed(否决) bills that would have required that parents give permission or be present when their children are questioned at school by law enforcement officers.1.Julia Wilson was questioned because .A.she wanted to kill President BushB.she set up the website C.the agents thought she might be a threat to the federalD.she was a peace-loving person2.What can we infer from the text?A.Julia Wilson will be put into prison for making a threat.B.Kirtie Wilson thought it wrong to question her daughter in school without them.C.Assistant principal thought there was no need to inform Julia‘s parents when questioningher.D.Ann Brick believes that teenagers should not be politically enthusiastic.3.What does the underlined word ―mean‖ mean in the text?A.cruel and violent B.poisonousC.kind-hearted D.unfair4.The author wrote this story mainly to .A.struggle against the war in Iraq started by the USB.discuss whether parents should be included when children are questionedC.warn teenagers not to post web pages on websitesD.criticize the former governors who vetoed the bill六When Nathan Winograd announced that he was leaving his job as a lawyer in California to run an animal shelter in Tompkins County, New York, his father looked at him for a long minute and then asked, ―What do dogs and cats need a lawyer for?‖The move meant giving up eight weeks‘ vacation, an office with a view of the San Francisco Bay and a big house among the redwoods, and moving to a rural area know for its harsh winters. But Winograd‘s wife, Jennifer, also an animal lover, was all for it. So they packed everything they owned, and with two young children, plus two dogs, and a bunch of cats Winograd had rescued, drove cross—country. On the second day, they had no room for six more puppies they received. They found an old horse trough, filled it with hay and nestled the animals inside. They placed it next to the front desk, and within a day or two, all six had homes, adopted by people who walked into the shelter and couldn‘t resist.Blind dogs, cats with missing limbs—all find homes. ―There is no dog or cat too old, too ugly or too undesirable not to be adopted by someone,‖ says Winograd.Today, Tompkins County is considered the only no-kill county in the United States. Nine out of ten dogs cats that come through the shelter doors are saved. Only animals with incurable injuries or illnesses, and the truly evil, are put down. The national average is half of all dogs and 70 percent of cats, totaling more than four million animals last year alone.Even though he drives an old car that leaks when it rains, and his family lives on a tight budget while his classmates from Stanford Law earn six-figure salaries, Winograd says he‘s doing what he‘d always wanted to do when he grew up; run an animal shelter and save all the animals. As a young district lawyer, he kept his goal in mind, starting when he raised his first animal cruelty case. A man was accused of intentionally setting his brown cat on fire. Winograd made his case, and the abusive owner was sentenced to prison. It was the first of many such cases, and he raised each with vigor. But the senseless violence, neglect and ignorance never failed to shock him. He decided simply, ―I need to get to the other side and start saving these animals.‖Now, Winograd is helping to save thousands, even millions, ―I‘m convinced that a no kill nation is possible, I‘m just here trying to shorten the time until it arrives.‖1.What was his father‘s response when Nathan Winograd left his job as a lawyer in California?A.He was all for it. I have a fairly large collection of short stories; however, if you want to send a story to me, I would appreciated it (this would save me scanning time). Please note three things about this site. One, some of the biographies are not available( the focus of this site is the story, not the biographies). If they are not in the book from which I am scanning the story, I will not go through my collection looking for a bio. Two, I will be focusing on shorter short stories. No Tolstoi or F. Scott Fitzgerald here (unless you are willing to send me the story ready to go online)! Maybe some day I will want to spend an entire day or two on one story, but not at this time. Three, I have no summaries or analyses, so you needn‘t ask. I read short stories often, but only for the enjoyment of doing so. I have very little desire to analyze what I am reading for that deep, hidden meaning.Fewer and fewer people these days read short stories. This is unfortunate-so few will ever experience the joy that reading such fine work can give. The goal of this site is to give a nice cross section of short stories in the hope that these short stories will excite these people into rediscovering this excellent source of entertainment.Happy reading! Such Native images are often used to convey the idea of saving mother earth. People who accept this image find it difficult to bring together what they have seen of some reservations—shabby homes, broken cars, underfed dogs, weeds in winds, and coal strip mines. Those who most romanticize American Indians are the quickest to be disappointed and discover that things are not as good as they have once believed. However, Indians‘ relationship with the land is much more complicated(复杂的) than those two black and white images which appeared in the television.Historically, tribal(部落的) people around the globe have had close ties with the earth. Lakota historian Vine Deloria, Jr., tells the story of the Ponca people who were taken from their range over a century ago and transported against their will to Oklahoma. Otherwise healthy, many Ponca wasted and died from no other clear cause than separation from their home. As Cheryl Crazy Bull says in this issue, ―The land is our relative. Without land, tribal people lose their identity—the land along with language, spiritual beliefs, and social systems distinguishes tribal people from others.‖To many people in the United States, the Indian reservation is an embarrassment. It represents the American version of racial seperation—a prison without walls where the government confined Indians to keep them apart from other Americans. To Indian people the reservation is home, regardless of what it looks like. They have spiritual, emotional, and family ties. Many of their relatives still live there or are buried there, and their creation stories are centered there.Americans tend to pull up roots and separate from their birthplace, moving from city to city many times. Many of us non—Indians have never visited the places where our ancestors are buried or the houses where our parents were born. Western nations use Earth in the same way, as if we can go to another planet when the air and water become too dirty. On the other hand, tribes arevery familiar with the concept of limited resource. They cannot get another reservation if theirs becomes too polluted.1.What does the writer mainly intend to state in this passage?A.American Indians are disappointed with their living environment.B.American Indians lead a miserable life now.C.Television advertisements can have an unexpected effect on people.D.Land is very important to people, especially tribal people.2.The author included the story of the Ponca people in this article mainly to state .A.the close relationship between tribal people and landB.the poverty of the tribal peopleC.the long history of the Ponca peopleD.the great changes of the Ponca peoples life3.Which of the following statements is true according to this passage?A.Americans can use land as they like and then go to another place.B.People in the west don‘t like to travel from city to city.C.Tribal people have the same concept of the resources as the non-Indians.D.The reservations have both positive and negative(负面的)effects on Indian people‘s life. 4.What topic does this article focus on?A.Family life of the Indians.B.People‘s attitude towards land.C.The history of tribal people.D.Environmental pollution nowadays.十The octopus‘s(章鱼)reputation as a human-killer isn‘t simply an exaggeration(夸张)—it is a total myth. The octopus can indeed be a deadly hunter, but only of its natural victims. Some shellfish(壳类动物)and an occasional sick or incautious fish have reason to be frightened of this multi-armed hunter, but a person is much too large to interest even the biggest octopus. Even the largest among octopi is much smaller than most people imagine. Far from being large enough to swallow a ship, as monster octopi in movies have been known to do, the largest octopus, found on the Pacific coast, weighs around 110 pounds and grows to no more than ten feet in width. The hard, parrot-like beak(喙)of an octopus is not used for attacking deep-sea divers, but for cutting open shellfish. Indeed, the octopus possesses such a tiny throat that it cannot swallow large pieces of meat. Instead, it feeds by pouring digestive juices into its victims, and then sucking up the soupy remains. A shellfish that finds itself in the grasp of an octopus has only a short time to live. But human beings are perfectly safe. B.Shellfish. C.Fish. D.The victims. 4.The hard beak of the octopus is used for .A.attacking deep-sea diversB.cutting up large pieces of meatC.cutting open its victimsD.defending itself5.From the passage, we can conclude that .A.the octopus is not dangerous to manB.people often fear creatures that are not dangerous to themC.the octopus only hunts its natural victimsD.things described in movies are not to be believed十一We all hate speed cameras, don‘t we? They‘re not there to slow drivers down and lower the road accidents; they just make money for the government. They trick us, cost us cold hard cash, disturb us from driving properly and are unfair.Well, here‘s a surprising thing: what if there were facts that the boring cameras actually saved lives? It‘s a conclusion difficult to ignore when you look at what‘s happening in France, a country with a historically poor record of road safety. There were 16,617 road deaths in 1972 in France for example, but that dropped to 8412 by 1995 following rules such as compulsory seat belt wearing in 1990 and a lowering of the blood alcohol limit to 0.05 in 1995.Last year, the road deaths dropped below 5,000 for the first time, or 4.9 per cent less than 2004. Comparing road deaths to population in 2005, that‘s about 817 per million people compared with Australia‘s 806.And guess what? Last year the number of speed cameras on French roads reached 1,000 and the government plans to double that within the next three years.Okay, you know the arguments regarding increased traffic safety and cameras-for-income, but it seems in France there‘s been a major cultural change brought on by radars and other laws. A three-hour, wine-soaked lunch with a quick rush back to the office is no longer on.Travelling on the highways, it is rare to see anyone breaking the 130km/h speed limit when once few traveled below it. The speed cameras are clearly signed so drivers know when they are coming. There‘s even an official web site listing fixed and mobile camera locations and it is updated regularly.Maybe it is because of such transparency by government, rather than the concealment too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French can enjoy la joi de vivre thanks to speed cameras.1.Generally, it seems to most people that speed cameras are used to .A.make money for the government。

(一)I remember my math teacher Mr. Young very well. He stood out because the kids made fun of him. He was missing one of his fingers, and always pointed at students with his middle finger.I was not very good at English and math. No matter how hard I tried, I just could not figure out why I did not understand what all the other kids found so easy to learn. One day, I was told that if I got one more E on my report card, I would be taken to the “big prison for kids”.I tried really hard for weeks. I just couldn’t understand how to make different parts of numbers into whole things. The day before report cards were to come out, I knew that Mr Young would give me an E, just like he always did.I went to Mr. Young and told him that the orphanage (孤儿院) was going to send me to the big prison if I got another E on my report card. He told me there was nothing he could do; it would be unfair to the other kids if he gave me a better grade than I had actually earned. I smiled at him and said, “Mr. Young, do you know how the kids make fun of you because you’re missing your finger?”He looked at me, moved his mouth to one side and said nothing.“They shouldn’t do that to you because you can’t help not having a finger, Mr Young. Just like I can’t help not being able to learn numbers and stuff like that,” I said. The next day, when I got my report card, I tucked it into one of my books. While on the school bus, I opened it: Geography, B+; Mechanical Drawing, C-; English, D-; History, C-; Gym, B+; Art, C; Math, D-.That math grade was the most favorite one I ever received. Because I knew that someone in the world finally understood what it was like for me to be missing a finger inside my head.1. From the second paragraph we can infer that the boy is ______ in some subjects.A. mind-blowingB. slow-wittedC. fun-lovingD. badly-behaved2. Where may the boy live according to the passage?A. In an orphanage.B. In a big prison.C. In the school dormitory.D. In his home.3. What grade should the boy have got in the math test this time?A. D-.B.C. C. B+.D.E.4. The underlined word “tucked” in the passage most probably means “________”.A. stuckB. listedC. hidD. copied5. The reason why the boy remembers Mr Young is that ______.A. he missed one of his fingersB. he treated his students very wellC. he understood the boyD. he taught his students in a special way(二)Your cell-phone holds secrets about you. Besides the names and numbers that you’ve programmed into it, traces of your DNA remain on it, according to a new study.DNA is genetic material that appears in every cell. Like your fingerprint, your DNA is unique to you — unless you have an identical twin. Scientists today usually analyze DNA in blood, saliva (唾液), or hair left behind at the scene of a crime. The results often help detectives identify criminals and victims.Meghan J. McFadden, a biologist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, heard about a crime in which the suspect (嫌疑犯) bled onto a cell phone and later dropped it. This made her wonder whether traces of DNA remained on cell phones — even when no blood was involved. To find out, she and a colleague collected flip-style (翻盖式) phones from 10 volunteers. They collected invisible traces of the users from two parts of the phone: the outside, where the user holds it, and the speaker, which is placed at the user’s ear.The scientists cleaned the phones using a liquid mixture made mostly of alcohol. The aim of washing was to remove all detectable traces of DNA. The owners got their phones back for another week. Then they returned the phones and the researchers collected traces on each phone once mo re. They discovered DNA that belonged to the phone’s owner on each of the phones.Surprisingly, DNA was even picked up immediately after the phones were cleaned. That suggests that washing won’t remove all traces of evidence from a criminal’s cell phone. S o cell phones can be added to the list of clues that can settle a crime-scene investigation.6. In a crime-scene investigation, now experts are likely to turn to ______.A. the criminal’s fingerprintB. the DNA analysis of physical itemsC. the detectivesD. the criminal’s cell-phone7. According to the passage, McFadden was inspired by _______.A. the secrets stored in people’s cell phonesB. the special characters of DNAC. a cell phone-involved caseD. the challenging job of detectives8. According to the passage, the potential application of the new study would be ______.A. identifying criminalsB. designing new cell-phonesC. protecting individual privacyD. preventing cell-phone-involved crime9. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. The reason for collecting the phones from volunteers.B. The technique of collecting DNA on the phones.C. The method of removing traces on the phones.D. The discovery on each phone of the owners.【答案与解析】1. B。

He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old.He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and — WHUMP! —it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! SCREECH...!!!! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!" Building up a head of steam, he went on. " That’s my new Jag, that b rick you threw is gonna cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it?""Please, mister, please....I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!" begged the youngster. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop!" tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. "It’s my brother, mister," he said. "He rolled of the curb (路沿) and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up. "Sobbing, the boy asked the businessman," Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? The chimp died on Tuesday night, according to Roger and Deborah Fouts, co-founders of The Chimpanzee and Human Communications Institute in Washington, where she lived. Washoe was born in 1965 in Africa, where she was captured by the Air Force and taken to the US for research use in the space program. In 1966, she left the program and began living with two scientists, Allen and Beatrix Gardner, who led a project to teach the chimp American Sign Language (ASL) in Washoe, Nevada, for which it was named. Washoe had been living on Central Washington University’s Ellensburg Campus since 1980. She had a vocabulary of about 250 words. Also, Washoe taught sign language to three younger chimps: Tatu, 31, Loulis, 29, and Dar, 31Primate (灵长类) researcher Jane Goodall, in Fouts’ book Next of Kin, noted the importance of the work with Washoe. “Roger, t hrough his ongoing conversations withWashoe and her extended family, has opened a window into a chimpanzee’s mind,” Goodall said.Though previous efforts to teach chimps spoken languages had failed, the researchers believed there was a better chance using signs. But Washoe’s language skills were disputed by scientists who believed that language is unique to humans. Among those who doubted that chimps could use language were linguist (语言学家) Noam Chomsky and Harvard scientist Steven Pinker. 2009届高考英语阅读理解专题练习

2009届高考英语阅读理解专题练习

2009届高考英语阅读理解专题练习 (4)(一)Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the s tudy, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is pa rt of the ageing process.”What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells.A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.“This gender difference might just explain why wome n live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.1. The u nderlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “________”.A. healthB. long lifeC. ageingD. effect2. The text mainly talks about ________.A. men’s heart cellsB. women’s ageing process、C. the gender differenceD. hearts and long life3. According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ________.A. women have more cells than men when they are bornB. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beatC. the female heart loses few of the cells with ageD. women never lose their pumping power with age4. If you want to live longer, you should ________.A. enable your heart to beat much fasterB. find out the reason for ageingC. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthyD. prevent your cells from being lost5. We can know from the passage that ________.A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found outB. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cellsC. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater lossD. women over 70 could lose more heart cells than those at the age of 20(二)Wugging, or web use giving, describes the act of giving to charity at no cost to the user. By using , which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK, students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny.Research shows that students are extremely passionate about supporting charity — 88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This age group is often the least likely to have their own income. 19% of 22 to 24 year olds have short-term debts of more than £5,000. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing (有感染力的) or possible.Beth Truman, a 21 year old recent university graduate, has used to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow inpopularity with students. “When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’s sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself,” says Beth. “Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.”Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding. works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can decide which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks. then makes monthly payments to every registered charity. Launched in June 2005, is now the eighth largest search engine and one of the busiest charity websites in the UK.6. 2.

(一)About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old.He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and —WHUMP! " That’s my new Jag, that brick you threw is gonna cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it?""Please, mister, please....I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!" begged the youngster.
