We may not be faced with a 23where our wisdom will 24 us from a death, but our sense of humor and the 25of laughing at things can keep us healthy and 26our life.Norman Cousins, in his book Anatomy of an Illness, wrote about how he 27himself of cancer by laughing a good part of each day. He 28films of comedies (喜剧) from the shop and in the room of the hospital he would 29them for hours. These comedies could make him happy and he had 30to lose since he’d been 31the serious illness. His “experiment” turned out to be a go od 32of the great power of laughter. If it 33 for Cousins with a dangerous illness, it can work for us to improve and protect our good health. So we should 34laugh heartily. It’s good to make us happy and strong. What’s more, it is very 35for us to take life seriously.16. A. angry B. excited C. lucky D. clever17. A. paid B. believed C. trained D. served18. A. test B. right C. love D. plan19. I was the waitress who got to take his order and serve him his food. The customer was difficult. He was quite openly upset with how his food was prepared. He sent his order back twice. When it at last arrived to his liking, he needed a cup of coffee. At this point, I had stayed 45 minutes past closing time. I didn’t even want to sit down because I knew my knees would pain and it would hurt terribly to get back up. I knew he would probably not give a tip. Then from across the street someone came walking. It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound while walking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of about fifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the smooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard. She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). She pushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and the light fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.61. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high. There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing —very, very slowly —as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock. Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that :have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.69. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling. The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right moneyfor a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “reality programmes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry. Yours faithfully,Chris Daniels73. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.C. To express his appreciation of the programme.D. To have his story told on the programme.74. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to .A. describe how painful his early experience wasB. draw a direct response from Alison BurnhamC. show how the programme made him thinkD. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson75. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .A. he hadn’t got a return ticketB. he had lost his bus ticketC. he didn’t like big crowdsD. he missed the bus home76. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?A. He should have told the conductor then.B. He should have been well treated.C. He regrets going to school alone.D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.ET-shirts out; uniforms inSchool uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.” First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (个性). They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. Wh ile they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.77. In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means .A. tasksB. messagesC. differencesD. advantages78. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .A. prevent the wearers from being laughed atB. help the wearers keep their duties in mindC. are seen as a symbol of powerD. help to create social barriers79. Some people are against school uniforms because .A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniformsB. they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC. the y don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD. they think that school uniforms are too popular80. The author would probably agree that .A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or notB. students’ individuality may not c ome from school educationC. students’ creativity is related to the clothes they chooseD. school uniforms help to create equality among students第二卷( 共45分)第四部分:单词拼写 10’81. A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(声称)as its own.Only he and hisfamily are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome.Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you,you might shout.Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.If so,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him.A bird does the same thing. But he expects no outsiders almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird's song, and it is usually enough tokeep an outsider away.Birds sing loudest in the spring whenthey are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.41.Some scientists believe that most of the time birds' singing is actually________.活页裁切线A.an expression of happinessB.a way of warningC.an expression of angerD.a way of greeting42.What is a bird's “territory”?A.A place where families of other species are accepted.B.A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.C.An area for which birds fight against each other.D.An area which a bird considers to be its own.43.Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?A.Because they want to invite morefriends.B.Because their singing helps frighten outsidersaway.C.Because they want to find outsiders around.D.Becausetheir singing helps get rid of their fears.44.How does thewriter explain birds' singing?A.By comparing birds with human beings.B.By reporting experiment results.C.By descri birds' daily life.D.By telling a bird's story.45.Where will you probably find the passage?A.A textbook. B.A newspaper.C.A science report. D.A an dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home?People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight.A recent research has found a new recipe of success.According to the study,if the cat is adopted before the dog,and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats,a year for dogs),it is highly probable that the two pets will get alongswimmingly.Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However,it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”,and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected.Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the samewater bowl and in some cases groom(梳理)each other. The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.46.The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to________.A.early B.sweetlyC.quicklyD.smoothly47.Some cats and dogs may fight when________.A.they are cold to each otherB.they look away from each otherC.they misunderstood each other's signalsD.they are introduced at an early age48.What is found surprising about cats anddogs?A.They eat and sleep each other.B.They observe eachother's behaviors.C.They learn to speak each other's language.D.They know something from each other's voices.49.It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs________.A.have common interestsB.are less different than was thoughtC.have a common body languageD.are less intelligent than wasexpected50.What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?A.We should learn to live in harmony.B.We should know more about animals.C.We should live in peace with animals.D.We should learn more body languages.Part Ⅲ Writing (45marks)Section A(10 marks)(2012•湖南师大附中高一段考)While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.Try physical activity. When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.Take care of yourself. You should make every effortto eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.Make time for yourself.Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don't forget, play can bejust as important to you overall wellbeing as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go windowshopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.Make alist of the things you need to do.Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there's so much to do, and not enough time. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time. Abbreviations such as “GDP” (gross domestic product), “WTO” (World Trade Organization) and “CPI” (consumer price index)will also be substituted(代替) with their Chinese pronunciations, it said. The move comes after a growing numberof national legislators(立法委员) and political advisorscalled for preventive measures to preserve(储存) the purity of the Chinese language.“If we don't pay attention and don'ttake measures to stop mixing Chinese with English, the Chinese language won't remain pure in a couple of years,” said Huang Youyi, editorinchief of the China International Publishing Group and secretarygeneral of the Translators' Associationof China. The restricted use of English abbreviations onChinese television programs has provoked a debate among scholars.“It makes no sense to introduce a regulation toprevent the use of English in the Chinese language in the faceof globalization(全球化),” Liu Yaoying, a professor at the Communication University of China, said on Tuesday. “It is cultural conservatism(守旧主义).”“If Western countries can accept some Chinglish words, why can't the Chinese language be mixed with English?”61.What does the government tell TVstations to do in the notice? Fees range from 6,132 pounds per term for day pupils to 7,665 pounds per term for boarders (寄宿生).“We are introducing classes on happiness,”said Anthony Seldon, master of Welling ton College. “We have been focusing too much on academics (学术) and missing something far more im portant.”A psychologist (心理学家) will be in charge of a pilot project teaching “happiness lessons” from the start of the next academic year. Pupils aged 14 to 16 will be given one lesson a week, learning skills such as how to manage relationships, physical and mental health, negative emotions and how to achieve one’s goals. The college’s religious education staff (成员) will teach the course as a complement (辅助) to, rather than a substitute (替代) for, usual religious education classes, said Seldon, who is also a political critic and writer.“To me, the most important job of any school is to turn out young men and women who are happy and secure (可靠的).” explained Seldon. “Celebrity, money and possessions are too often the touchstones for teenagers and yet these are not where happiness lies. Our children need to know that as societies become richer, theyd on’t become happier— a fact regularly shown by social science resear ch.”36. Wellington school is to offer students classes on happiness because ______.A. students want to learn more about materialism and celebrity obsessionB. students have poor knowledge about materialism and celebrity obsessionC. students are often unhappy about the courses taught at schoolD. the school wants to smooth away the bad effects caused by materialism and celebrity obsession37. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. Wellington College has been focusing much attention on happiness lessons.B. Science research shows that the richer people are, the happier they will become.C. British teenagers often judge things by celebrity, money and possessions.D. Happiness lessons will take the place of religious education classes in college.38. In happiness lessons, students learn the following except ______.A. how to get along with othersB. how to become rich and famousC. how to get rid of negative emotionD. how to keep healthy both in physical and mental waysB“I’m seventy years old,” says the gra y-haired lady proudly to the entertainer (演艺人员) at her Community Club dinner.“Did you hea r that, everyone?” says the entertainer. “This lovely lady is just seventy years young! And she doe sn’t look a day over fifty.”He has been careful not to use the word “old”. In a society where youth is so admired, old age is often seen as something sad, something to fight against. Ame ricans prefer not to say “old” people. They use the express ion “senior citizens”. They do not talk about “old people’s” homes, but “retirement” homes. In fact, the entertainer is not so wrong. Seventy is not very old these days. People in the US are living longer and longer. In1980, 12 percent of Americans were over sixty-five years old. By 2030, 21 percent will be over sixty-five. One reason for this is that families are getting smaller. The average couple now has only 1.8 children. At the same time, improved medical care means that people are living longer. This change in the age of Americans is going to have serious results. For one thing, medical costs are rising. The government is unable to pay the e lderly people’s medical bills that have gone up very much. Some old people have to leave hospital “sicker and quicker” than they sh ould, before they are really better.More fortunate senior citizens, though, who still have good health, want new laws to be passed to allow them to stay at work. In the past, the retirement age was sixty-five, but that is changing now. Older people are stronger and more energetic than ever before. Many of them refuse to stop working just because they have reached a certain age. There is a change, too, in the way in which elderly people see themselves. Many are no longer happy to accept the gray hair, bald (秃的) heads, and boring clothes of their own parents. They like to wear younger-looking clothes and bright makeup. American women spend millions of dollars a year on operations to lift their faces and make those ugly wrinkles (皱纹) disappear. Men are prepared to spend even more on operations to plant new hair on their bald spots. It’s worth any money to look younger.39. In America people try to avoid u sing the word “old” because ______.A. the old age is seen as some thing that isn’t admiredB. it is now believed to bring bad luck to elderly peopleC. the standard (标准) of getting old has changedD. the change in the age has caused a health problem40. According to the passage, which of the following does NOT describe the American society correctly?A. People live longer because of improved medical care.B. The government finds it difficult to afford the medical bills of the elderly.C. People use polite expressions when talking about old age.D. The old patient s’ time in hospital is stric tly limited.41. This passage is most probably taken from ______.A. a travel bookletB. a magazineC. an advertisementD.a medical reportCAfter an absence of thirty years, I decided to visit my old school again. I had expected to find changes, but not a completely different building. As I walked up the school drive, I wondered for a moment if I had come to the right address. The dirty red brick houses had been swept away. In its place stood a bright, modern block. A huge expanse of glass extended (延展) across the face of the building, and in front, there was a well-kept lawn (草坪) where previously there had been “an untidy gravel (沙石) yard”.I was pleased to find that it was bread time and that the children were all in the playground. This would enable me to meet some members of staff. On entering the building, I was surprised to hear loud laughter coming from what appeared to be the masters’ c ommon room. I could not help remembering the teachers in my time, all dressed in black gowns (长袍) and high collars (领子). And above all, I recalled Mr Garston whom we had n icknamed “Mr Ghastly”, the headmast er who had iron discipline on staff and pupils alike. I knocked at the common room door and was welcomed by a smiling young man who introduced himself to me as the headmaster. He was dressed casually in a sports jacket, and his cheerful manner, quickly dispelled (驱散) the image of Mr Ghastly. After I had explained who I was, the headmaster presented me to the teachers all of whom were a little younger than himself, and said he would take me round the school. Here the biggest surprise of all was in store for me. Gone were the heavy desks of old with their deeply carved names; gone too, were the dark classrooms with their ink stained, dark brown walls, and their raised platforms for the teachers. The rooms now were painted in bright colors, and the children, far from sitting straightin their places, seemed almost free to do as they liked. I looked with envy as I remembered how, as a child, I had looked at the blackboard hardly daring to whisper to my neighbor.42. The writer ______.A. had no difficulty in recognizing his old schoolB. found it difficult to recognize his old schoolC. noticed that the building was still unfinishedD. was surprised to see an untidy gravel yard43. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. He had expected that the school had completely changed.B. In the writer’s time, all the teachers were dressed in black gowns and high collars.C. An untidy gravel yard had disappeared.44. “Mr Ghastly” must be ______.A. th e writer’s t eacherB. a serious old manC. the strict headmasterD. a naughty boy45.
