AWild animals are our friends, but many of them are getting fewer and fewer. We should try to protect them. The four animals below are now in danger.Tibe AntetanlopseTibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) are medium-sized animals. They mainly feed on grass. They are usually found in groups of about 20. They are killed for their wool, which is warm, soft and fine and can be made into expensive clothes. Although people can get the wool without killing the animals, people simply kill them before taking the wool. The number of them is dropping year by year. There are less than 75,000 Tibetan antelopes left in the world, down from a million 50 years ago.Golden MonkeysGolden monkeys are mainly found in Sichuan, Gansu, Shanxi provinces and Shengnongjia mountainous area of Hubei Province. Golden monkeys have golden-orange fur. They move around in the daytime, usually in groups of as many as 100 to 200 heads, or 20 to 30 heads. They feed on fruits and young leaves of bamboos. But people are destroying the environment where they live. Trees and bamboos are disappearing, so goldenmonkeys have less and less to eat.ElephantsElephants are very big and strong . They are bigger than any other animals on land. They are grey and have long trunks and tusks. They have poor eyesight, but very good hearing and smell. They can lift heavy things and break down branches with their trunks. Elephants are very friendly towards each other and towards their neighbors. Normally, they live in a group for many years. Young male elephants do not leave the group until they are about 12 years old. Now, there are very few elephants in the world. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller because their living areas are used for farming. Also, people hunt them for their tusks.WolvesWolves are not very big. They have grey fur. Wolves have very good eyesight, hearing and smell. Wolves' food is various. They eat animals, insects and snails. They are friendly to each other and never attack people. They do not kill for fun. Wolves are in danger, too. They are losing their living areas because people cut down forests. Soon they will have no home or food.1. The first and earliest paper cutting was found in China 1,500 years ago. But this traditional art is at risk of disappearing now. Luckily, Voyo Woo, a Chinese immigrant(移民)in America, is trying to bring this art back to life. One Saturday in 2014, Ms Woo held a paper cutting show at a shopping center near Washington. She got much fun and peace doing it. She hoped more people would enjoy it. Ms Woo began to study the art of paper cutting as a 14-year-old girl in her hometown in China. She said all the students at school had to learn paper cutting. But she had a deep love for it. So her teacher spent more time teaching her after class. Later, she won the second prize in a national painting and art competition. Ms Woo went to America after she finished collage in 2008. Soon after that, she took part in an activity to promote(宣传)Chinese paper cutting. And then she was invited to show the artin many important activities.“It is important to promote th is art to Americans or anyone who is int erested in it. Maybe it will make this art more popular.” Woo said. From the art of paper cutting, people can know about Chinese cultural values, history and stories of people’s life. A team gets better. A kid practices more and swims a personal best or learns a new moveon the basketball court. In 2006, two things happened that got me thinking about change—in sports and in life. One of them is tennis champion Andre Agassi, who retired in 2006. Agassi was a terrific player who won 60 titles, including eight major championships(冠军称号). But his greatest accomplishment(成就)might have been how much he changed during his career. When he was young, Agassi was a show off who seemed to care only about himself. He didn't train very hard, but he won matches because of his tremendous(极大的)talent. Eventually, though, injuries and his bad attitude caught up with him. He fell from No.1 in the world ranking to No.141. So Agassi changed. He trained harder and became a world-class player again. More importantly, he changed as a person. He was nicer to fans and opponents(对手). He stopped thinking just about himself and started thinking about others. Through his Andre Agassi CharitableFoundation, he raised more than $60 million to help disadvantaged kids around his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. He even started a school, the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, for at-risk kids.At the start of a new year, lots of people promise themselves they will change. They might vow to get in good physical shape, do better in school or be nicer to others. Changes such as those can be difficult. But they do happen. Just remember Andre Agassi: It wasn't easy, but he changed, and changed for the better.8. According to the writer, which of the following may be the greatest achievement for Agassi?A. Another thing happened in life that got the writer thinking about change.D. Some assessments(评价) about Agassi from different people.DLaptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere theywant. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to "speak" with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees----anywhere at all!Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, "Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything."12. BACAB第四部分:阅读理解AThere are many idioms in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word. The following are some of them.As the crow fliesWhen a bird flies from place to place, it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance "as the crow flies", they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads. As Dan and his mum drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side, Dan asked "How far is it to the beach?""It's only about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies" his mother said.Blow hot and coldIn one of Aesop's Fables, a man blow on his fingers to warm them up and then blow on his soup to cool it down. In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite, we say that the person is blowing hot and cold."Is Felicia going to try out for the soccer team this year?" Stacy asked."I don't know," Tricia replied." Last week she was saying yes,but this week she's saying no. She's really blowing hot and cold."Break the iceNowadays people use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation. It was the first day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds in silence. None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying" Hey, where's everybody from?"Bury the hatchetIn native American culture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.Colin could not excuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said,"Colin, can't we bury the hatchet?"56.What does "as the crow flies" mean?A. In the smoothest wayB. By planeC. In a straight lineD. At top speed.57."Blow hot and cold " can be used to talk about someone's ______.A. poor healthB. bad mannerC. communication skillsD. changing attitudes58. When the four girls were making their beds in silence, they probably felt _____.A. shyB. disappointedC. excitedD. Curious59. It can be inferred that Colin's sister hoped that Colin would ______.A. buy a new tennis racketB. forgive her mistakeC. stay away from herD. make an apology to her60. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. It’s difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom by each word.B. What Felicia thought was different from what he saidC. Dan and his mother need drive a quarter of a mile to the beach.D. “Bury the hatchet” is an idiom from Aesop’s Fables.Keys:56-60. CDABABA couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water. For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water —two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface.I caught them with my hands.”About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn’t stand up. So the captain carried them onto his boat and took them to Costa Rica. Their two months at sea was over.61. CBDBDC.Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are drivingfaster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.66. The passage mainly discusses __________.A. a new way of highway speed controlB. a new method of training driveC. a new pattern for painting highwaysD. a new type of optical illusion67. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ________.A. they should avoid speed-related dangers.B. they are driving in the wrong laneC. they should slow down their speedD. they are reaching the speed limit68. Compared to horizontal bars, the advantage of chevrons is that ________.A. it can keep drivers awakeB. it will have a longer effect on driversC. can cut road accidents in halfD. will look more attractive69.The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to________.A. try out the Japanese method in certain areasB. change the road signs across the countryC. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevronsD. repeat the Japanese road patterns70. What of the following is true about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?A. They are suitable only on broad roads.B. They are falling out of use in the United States.C. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles.D. They are ignored in a long period of time.Keys:66-70. ACBADDSherlock Holmes is considered by many people as the greatest detective in fictional literature. He is, in fact, more famous than his own creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the popular series of stories, Holmes is described as “tall and l ean, pope-smoking, always in his cape and speaks in a splendid manner”. Doyle gave Holmes’ address as 221-B BakerStreet, London, and to this day some visitors to London still go to Baker Street to search for 221-B. Of course, there never was really any su ch address. Holmes’ flat was supposed to be shared by the lovable, but sometimes clumsy Doctor Watson who went around with Holmes trying to solve crimes before Holmes did. Poor Dr Watson lost out to Holmes every time.Doyle gave Holmes a masterly skill of deduction---the ability to come up with interesting conclusion from the simplest clues found at the scene of a crime. Doyle said that the description of Holmes was modeled on one of his lecturers at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. That man was Dr Joseph Bell. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet published in 1887. Holmes was so loved by all that when his author killed him off in one of his stories, readers wrote in anger to complain. They refused to allow Holmes to die! Satellite (卫星) pictures show large wooded areas have been cleared from central Mexico. The forests are the winter home for millions of monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The butterflies travel there each year to reproduce (繁殖).Each year, more than two hundred thousand people travel to Mexico to see the butterflies. From November to March, millions of butterflies can be seen in the trees and the sky. Mexican officials hope that by protecting the forests, they can increase the number of visitors. These satellite pictures show the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. About four hundred forty-five hectares (公顷) have been cleared illegally (非法地) since 2004. Scientists say that, if the clearing continues, monarch butterflies will not use the reserve as their winter home. For thousands of years, the butterflies have been flying to the same forests. Their trip goes along Canada and the northeastern United States. It is about four thousand eight hundred kilometers. The insects fly about eighty kilometers a day. They reach central Mexico after about sixty days.No one is sure why the brightly-colored orange and black butterflies choose these forests. However, dark rooftops hold in more than eighty percent of the energy from sunlight. This is why there are white-and-light-colored buildings in many warm areas of the world.Researchers have estimated(评估) the effects that white roofs could have on the planet. Their study considers painting sixty-three percent of rooftops white in one hundred large cities in warm areas around the world. The scientists estimate this would have the same climate result as taking all cars in the world off the road for ten years. It would also save money on indoor air cooling costs.A writer has some ideas for families which are planning to travel on vacation by car. Many people ask their friends or doctors: how can I lose weight? And many of them are often told: if you exercise, you will lose weight; ﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣which is one of the most widely accepted ideas in our culture. As a doctor, I exercise all the time, but I still have got fat that hangs over my belt when I sit. Why isn't all the exercise getting rid of it?It's another question many of us may ask. More than 35 million Americans now belong to a health club, up from 23 million in 1993. We spend some ﹩19 billion a year on gym memberships. Of course, some people join and never go. Still, as one major study ﹣ the Minnesota Heart Survey ﹣ found, more of us at least say we exercise regularly. And yet obesity figures have risen sharply in the same period: a third of Americans are obese, and another third count as overweight by the Federal Government's definition. Yes, it's entirely possible that those of us who regularly go to the gym would weigh even more if we exercised less. But like many other people, I get hungry after I exercise, so I often eat more on the days I work out than on the days I don't. Could exercise actually be keeping me from losing weight? The popular belief that exercise is essential for weight control is actually fairly new. As recently as the 1960s, doctors routinely advised against too much exercise, particularly for older adults who could injure themselves. Today doctors encourage even their oldest patients to exercise, which is sound advice for many reasons: People who regularly exercise are at significantly lower risk for all manner of diseases ﹣ those of the heart in particular. They less often develop cancer and many other illnesses. But the past few years of obesity research show that the role of exercise in weight loss has been wildly over﹣evaluated."In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless, " says Eric Ravussin, exercise researcher at Louisiana State University. Many recent studies have found that exercise isn't as important in helping people lose weight as you hear so regularly in gym advertisements or on shows like The Biggest Loser ﹣ or from magazines like this one.(1)Which title is the most suitable one for this article?________A Overweight Is Not Good for YouB Exercise Won't Make You ThinC Gym Is Part of American LifestyleD A Health Problem in America.(2)Which statement is correct?________A Some Americans join a health club but never take exercise thereB The number ofoverweight people has doubled since 1993 in US C More than 35 million Americans now go to the gym regularly D Most Americans waste too much money each year on sports.(3)From the passage, we know that exercise________.A has long been believed to be good for older adultsB is not properly advertised as a way to lose weightC was never recognized as an effective way to lose weightD is not useful at all.(4)According to the passage, why do people gain weight?________A Because they have the habit of going to the gym regularlyB Because they eat the same food when they do not exerciseC Because they exercise less than required by doctorsD Because they eat more after they exercise.(5)What can be inferred from the passage?________A Most Americans are overweight.B Very few people in America are overweight.C The author takes exercise all the time so he is very slimnow. D The author takes exercise all the time but it doesn't make him lose weight.23. The tanker lay in the bay for four days, a few hundred meters from the shore. In this tideless water she lay as still and secure as if fastened to a wall. In a way, she was, for the sandy bottom held her in its grip. Twice the harbor master's boat went out to her; the second time it brought off a number of the crew. It never occurred to the watchers on shore that the ship was in danger, she looked so calm and seaworthy. From time to time there was activity on board: when a land wind rose in the evenings, the tanker's engines came to life. Then the vessel shook herself and strained fiercely, but none of it did her any good. She just stayed where she was in the bay.The July sun blazed down on her flat decks. Occasionally a seaman , stripped to the waist, came out on to the deck with the movements of someone performing a complicated dance, stepping lightly, never resting on that burning metal. Once or twice he kept close to the ship's rail, with an arm raised against the sunlight, staring at the people on the beach. Throughout the day the air rose in visible waves from the tanker's decks. When a sea wind blew, it brought with it the heavy smell of oil. At night the ship lay in total darkness. On the fifth morning a thick bank of sea mist filled the bay. It seemed that the tanker had got away in the night and gone into harbor. But this was an illusion. Slowly, as the fog cleared a little, she came into view again but farther out. Soon two figures could be seen at work on her deck. There was the sound of hammering, of metal on metal, and then of something heavy falling on to the deck. At once the watchers on shore were half blinded by a flash of yellow light that enveloped the ship from end to end. The explosion that followed the flash was like a single crack from a giant whip. In a moment the ship, except for a dark line at water level, was lost to sight behind the flames. Two bodies were washed ashore in the bay. They were stripped to the waist, bare﹣footed and black with flash burns. The right arm of one body was raised to the forehead as if shielding the eyes from some bright light. The other man wore a gold chain round his neck. The tanker burned for nine days and nights.(1)What prevented the tanker from sailing into harbor?________A She was waiting for a suitable tide.B Most of her crew had goneashore. C She had run aground on sand. D Her engines had broken down..(2)The people who were watching from the beach________.A realized the trouble but could do nothing about itB offered to help without knowing what to doC did not know there was anything wrong with the shipD did not want to put themselves in any danger.(3)Why did the seaman keep moving about?________A Because the deck was uncomfortable to stand on.B Because that was the best way to keep his balance.C Because he was practicing some kind of dance.D Because he had to pretend he was working..(4)How did the mist affect the situation?________A It forced the ship to move farther from the shore.B It made the seamen's work harder.C It allowed the ship to move into the harbor.D For a time it hid the ship from sight..(5)The explosion occurred on the tanker when________.A she was unloading her oilB the fog began to clearC the two seamen were workingD she was struck by lightning.(6)What happened to the two seamen?________A They were blown off the ship and swam ashore.B They were killed in the explosion.C They survived but were badly burned.D They died shortly after reaching the beach.24. I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful. I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2﹣to 3﹣week﹣old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.I examined the chick and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree. The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down. Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! Thehomeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all ﹣ LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.(1)What is unavoidable in the author's rescue work according to paragraph 1?________A Efforts made in vain.B Getting injured in his work.C Feeling uncertain about his future.D Creatures forced out of their homes..(2)What made the chick calm down?________A A new nest.B Some food.C A recording.D Its parents..(3)How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?________A It's unexpected.B It's beautiful.C It's humorous.D It's discouraging.25. You're sitting on the train home and the person opposite you yawns. Suddenly, you're yawning with him, though you're not tired. This phenomenon confused scientists for years until a recent study found that people tend to sympathize with fellow humans. Supporting this claim was the discovery that those children who were unable to form normal emotional ties with others did not experience contagious yawning, which showed that humans communicate regularly without words.Hugo Critchley, a neuroscientist, has conducted an experiment recently, which will prove that happiness and sadness can spread like the common cold. According to Critechley, our mind and body are in constant exchange about how we're feeling. "Emotions are closely linked with states of internal responses, " he explained. "There are also more visible changes in our gestures and facial expression. When we're in a group, these signals can spread to another person. For example, there's the obvious tendency to smile when smiled at and there are less obvious changes that reflect emotions of surprise, anger or sadness such as a change in our heart rate and blood pressure.Hugo Critchley further explained, "Our bodies ________ and when we like the other person, we ever copy his behavior. Next time you chat with a friend, take note of howyou're sitting﹣ it's pretty likely that you will be the same. Scientists believe it's our way of telling each other that we're partners. Through body language, humans give each other very subtle but clear signals that show emotions."So, what lessons can we learn from this? "Spend time with happy people﹣ otherwise your health could suffer, " said Critchley." When we're sad, our body goes into fight or flight mode. But when we're happy, our body works normally and we feel relaxed and positive. So we look bright, our skin glows, we feel healthy and it affects everyone around us."(1)According to Hugo Critchley,________.A emotions are as visible as facial expressionsB we yawn more frequently when we have a coldC emotions are connected with states of internal responsesD the change of blood pressure is not linked with the change of emotions..(2)The underlined word "synchronies" in Paragraph 4 means "________".A move slowlyB change rapidlyC relax temporarilyD respond accordingly.(3)From the passage we can learn________.A sadness is as contagious as happinessB anger is less contagious thanfriendliness C surprise is more contagious than smile D surprise is the most contagious among emotions.26. One morning a few years ago, Harvard President Neil Rudenstine overslept. For this busy man, it was a sort of ________: after years of non﹣stop hard work, he might wear himself out and die an early death.Only after a week's leave﹣﹣ during which he read novels, listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach﹣﹣ was Rudenstine able to return to work.In our modern life, we have lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world there is a universal but silly saying: "I am so busy."We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to successfully deal with stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unableto find time to relax﹣﹣ this has become the model of a successful life.Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food providing is with strength, the quiet giving us wisdom. How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of the week﹣﹣ for followers of some religions﹣﹣ for rest and praying. It is a day when we are not supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is a good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world.Rest is s spiritual and biological need; however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, we may feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us permission to stop work. In fact, "Remember the Sabbath" is more than simply permission to rest; it is a rule to obey and a principle to follow.(1)The "alarm" in the first paragraph refers to "________".A a signal of stressB a warning of dangerC a sign of ageD a spread of disease.(2)According to Paragraph 4, a successful person is one who is believed to________.A be able to work without stressB be more talented than other peopleC be more important than anyone elseD be busying working without time to rest.(3)Some people feel guilty when taking time to rest because they________.A think that taking a rest means lacking ambitionsB fail to realize that rest is an essential part of lifeC fail to realize that religions force them to restD think that taking a rest means being lazy.(4)What is the main idea of this passage?________A We should balance work with rest.B The Sabbath gives us permission torest. C It is silly for anyone to say "I am busy." D We should be available to our family and friends.27. How is communication actually achieved? It depends, of course, either on a common language or on known conventions, or at least on the beginnings of these. If the common language and the conventions exist, the contributor, for example, the creative artist, the performer, or the reporter, tries to use them as well as he can. But often, especially with original artists and thinkers, the problem is in one way that of creating a language, or creating a convention, or at least of developing the language and conventions to the point where they are capable of bearing his precise meaning. In literature, in music, in the visual arts, in the sciences, in social thinking, in philosophy, this kind of development has occurred again and again. It often takes a long time to get through, and for many people it will remain difficult. But we need never think that it is impossible; creative energy is much more powerful than we sometimes suppose. While a man is engaged in this struggle to say new things in new ways, he is usually more than ever concentrated on the actual work, and not on its possible audience. Many artists and scientists share this fundamental unconcern about the ways in which their work will be received. They may be glad if it is understood and appreciated, hurt if it is not, but while the work is being done there can be no argument. The thing has to come out as the man himself sees it.In this sense it is true that it is the duty of society to create conditions in which such men can live. For whatever the value of any individual contribution, the general body of work is of immense value to everyone. But of course things are not so formal, in reality. There is not society on the one hand and these individuals on the other. In ordinary living, and in his work, the contributor shares in the life of his society, which often affects him both in minor ways and in ways sometimes so deep that he is not even aware of them. His ability to make his work public depends on the actual communication system: the language itself, or certain visual or musical or scientific conventions, and the institutions through which the communication will be passed. The effect of these on his actual work can be almost infinitely variable. For it is not only a communication system outside him; it isalso, however original he may be, a communication system which is in fact part of himself. Many contributors make active use of this kind of internal communication system. It is to themselves, in a way, that they first show their conceptions, play their music, present their arguments. Not only as a way of getting these clear, in the process of almost endless testing that active composition involves, but also, whether consciously or not, as a way of putting the experience into a communicable form. If one mind has grasped it, then it may be open to other minds. In this deep sense, the society is in some ways already present in the act of composition. This is always very difficult to understand, but often, when we have the advantage of looking back at a period, we can see, even if we cannot explain, how this was so. We can see how much even highly original individuals had in common, in their actual work, and in what is called their "structure of feeling", with other individual workers of the time, and with the society of that time to which they belonged. The historian is also continually struck by the fact that men of this kind felt isolated at the very time when in reality they were beginning to get through. This can also be noticed in our own time, whensome of the most deeply influential men feel isolated and even rejected. The society andthe communication are there, but it is difficult to recognize them, difficult to be sure.(1)Creative artists and thinkers achieve communication by________.A depending on shared conventionsB fashioning their ownconventions C adjusting their personal feelings D elaborating a common language.(2)A common characteristic of artists and scientists involved in creative work isthat________.A they care about the possible reaction to their workB public response is one of the primary conceitsC they are keenly aware of public interest in their workD they are indifferent toward response to their work.(3)According to the passage, which of the following statements is INCORRECT?________ A Individual contributions combined possess great significance to the public. ATo me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests, be so exciting or dramatic? I'm not sure about it.Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning----the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in our everyday life too----in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music. It is well said, “Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”21. What does the writer say more about in the text?A. Life full of music.B. The importance of music.C. Life without music.D. The development of music.22. From the text, we learn that many people________.A. go to the concert instead of enjoying musicB. get along quite well without musicC. don't realize the importance of musicD. think music would be less exciting than films23. From the last paragraph, we learn that music________.A. is very necessary for our everyday lifeB. is very important, especially for childrenC. can make our life exciting and dramaticD. can enter another beautiful worldBOne evening I was going back from a supermarket. As I was approaching my car, I noticed that some person came and stood beside me. He was the one that could be considered as a bum. It seemed that he had no car, no home and no job. I thought that he would ask me for money, but he did not do that, he only said: “Your car is very nice”.After several moments of silence, I replied: “Thanks”, and then the inner voice told me,“Askhim if he needs help”. After a short hesitation(犹豫) I asked him if he needed any help. His response was astonishing. I will never forget those simple three words that I heard from him: —“Don’t we all?”It was a true discovery to me. I needed help. Although I had money and a place to sleep, but I recognized that I needed help too. Then I opened my wallet and gave him enough money to get a meal and some shelter for a day.Suddenly I understood that no matter how much money we have, we all need help. On the other hand, no matter how poor you are and how many material problems you have, you still might offer your help to others and you still might be giving. Even it’s just a nice word, you can give that and it can be priceless to other persons.Maybe that man was just a homeless stranger, but to me he was more than that. Maybe he was sent by the Highest Loving Power personally to me to open my eyes and to show me that there is one thing, among all other values, which is very important and irreplaceable for each and everyperson. Actually, it is a true gift and it is called Giving.24. The underlined word “bum” in Paragraph 1 can be a person _______.A. who needs moneyB. who is a homeless manC. who is willing to help othersD. who is sent by the Highest Loving Power25. Why did the writer give enough money to the man?A. The writer had enough money to help.B. He needed money to eat and have a rest.C. His words gave the writer deep thoughts.D. The writer is kind and always helps others.26. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?A. Not everyone needs help.B. Giving is as important as receiving.C The rich should help the poor.D. A helping and touching word can help others.27. What did the writer probably get from the man?A. True meaning of giving.B. True meaning of being rich.C. True meaning of valuesD. True meaning of giftsCSports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment. Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas. There are many environment-friendly sports Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.28.
