When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破)one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the gro und and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pa t her. Of course she’d let anyone p at her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. she never barked(吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.

Maybe you are aware that the latest job markets news isn’t promising: Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero, which is bad for economy, of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think.
That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter t o job hunters as much as job turnover data. After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations, terminations, and retirements. In both good times and bad, turnover creates more openings than economic growth does. Even in June of 2007, when the economy was still falling along, job growth was only 132,000, while turnover was 4.7 million!
And as it turns out, even today — with job growth near zero — over 4 million job hunters are being hired every month.
I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher, it would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from. And it’s true that there are currently more people applying for each available job op ening, regardless of whether it’s a new one or not.
But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be creative about where and how to look; learn how to present themselves to potential employers; and keep going, even after repeated rejections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that 2.7 million people who wanted and were available for work hadn’t looked for a job within the last four weeks and were no longer even classified as unemployed.
So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up. Four million people get hired every month in the U.S. You can be one of them.
46. The author tends to believe that high unemployment rate _______.
A. causes many people to lose job opportunities
B. should not stop people from looking for a job
C. prevents many people from changing careers
D. does not mean the U.S. economy is worsening
47. Where do most job openings come from?
A. Job growth.

D. Job turnover.

B. It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.
C. It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.
D. It doesn’t mean greater job security for the employed.
49. What is the key to landing a job according to the author?
A. Never giving up.
B. Being intelligent.
C. Being educated.
D. Being experienced.
50. What do we learn from the passage about the unemployment figures in the US?
A. They clearly indicate how healthy the economy is.
B. They provide the public with the latest information.
C. They don’t include those who have stopped looking for a job.

D

Speedy eaters are three times more likely to be too fat, a problem which is made even worse by the popularity of fast food and the decrease of regular dining habits, some Japanese researchers said on Wednesday.
The findings, published in the British Medical Journal, pay special attention to how eating styles, and not just what or how much is eaten, can affect an obesity epidemic(肥胖流行病) that is becoming more and more severe because of the speed of the Western-style diet in many parts of the world.
The World Health Organization considers around 400 million people in the world as too fat, 20 million of whom are under the age of five. The researchers are concerned that the condition raises the risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) and heart problems.
For their study, Hiroyasu Iso and the team at Osaka University asked more than 3000 Japanese volunteers (志愿者) who are 30 to 69 years old about their eating. About half of the men and a little more than half of the women said they ate until full. About 45 percent of the men and 36 percent of the women said they ate quickly.
Those who said they ate until full and ate quickly were three times more likely to be fat than
people in the “not eating until full and not eating quickly” gro up, the researchers found.
They believe that the main causes are both the popularity of eating cheap fast food and bad habits such as watching television while eating.
To fight against the bad effect of eating quickly and being too full that can lead to obesity, parents should encourage children to eat slowly and in calm environments, the study suggested. 56. What did the researchers pay special attention to in the study? (No more than 10 words)

Dear headmaster,
I’m writing to request you to allow us to surf the Internet in the computer classroom. Right now, we ca n’t use the computer in the compute classroom, which makes us very upset because we can’t search for the information we need or read news about what is happening at home or abroad.
As far as I’m concerned, using the Internet is very necessary. Surfing the Internet can benefit us in many ways. First of all, we can search for solutions to some problems that we come across in our studies. Second, it is necessary for us to learn about the latest news. More importantly, we are no longer children now, so we can able to control our behaviour. Therefore, the teachers needn’t be worried about us.
I do hope you can take my suggestions into consideration and make a final decision.
