WritingPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal of language use is communication, then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually as awareness of those mistakes increases. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying “ I do it” to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by communicating with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say “I’ll do it “. This difference can serve as a basis for the student to change his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to communicate in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.1.According to the passage, the present tense in English is( ).A.not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate futureB.used with some verbs but NOT with others to express future intentionC.basically the same in English as it is in SpanishD.not the most difficult problem for foreign students正确答案:A解析:细节题。

Tasks that puzzle the most advancedsupercomputer--recognizing a face, reading a handwritten note--are child′ s play. Most important, unlike any ordinary computer, the brain can learn from its mistakes. Researchers have tried for years to program computers to imi-tate the brain′s abilities, but without success. Now a growing number of designers believe they have the answer: if a computer is to work more like a person and less like an over-grown calculator it must be built more like a brain, which distributes information across a vast interconnected web of nerve cells or neurons.Ordinary computers work by following a chainlike sequence of detailed instructions.Although very fast, their processors can perform only one task at a time. This approach works best in solving problems that can be broken down into simpler logical pieces. The pro-cessors in a neural-network computer,by contrast, form a network much like the nerve :cells in the brain. Since these artificial (人造的) neurons are interconnected, they can share infor-mation and perform tasks at the same time. Thistwo-dimensional approach works best at rec-ognizing patterns.Instead of programming a neural-network computer to make decisions, its maker trains it to recognize patterns in any solution to a problem by repeatedly feeding examples to the machine.Neural networks come in all shapes and sizes. Until now most existed as software simu-lations (模拟品) because redesigning computer chips took a lot of time and money. By exper-imenting with different approaches through software rather than hardware, scientists have been able to avoid costly mistakes.1.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that acomputer__________.A.can recognize a faceB.cannot learn from its mistakesC.cannot follow detailed instructionsD.can read a handwritten note答案:B2.Which of the following is NOT true about an ordinary computer?A.It must be programmed before it works.B.It can only solve one problem at a time.C.It is good at solving problems that can be broken down into simpler logical pieces.D.It is trained to make decisions.答案:D解析:从其次段开头这句,Ordinary computers work by following a chainlike sequence of detailed instructions(电脑的工作原理就是遵循一系列具体的指令),可知选项A是正确的表达。

成人学位英语考试阅读理解冲刺练习(三).doc
2018年成人学位英语考试阅读理解冲刺练习(三)When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer’ s claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty(保单), or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the higher up the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer’ s favour, assuming he or she has a just claim.Consumers shoud complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear is better than This stereo(立体声音响)does not work. The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting con sumers’ rights.1.When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to ______.A. complain personally to the managerB. threaten to take the matter to courtC. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchaseD. show some written proof of the purchase to the store答案:D2.If a consumer wants a quick settlement of his problem, it’ s better to complain to ______.A. a shop assistantB. the store managerC. the manufacturerD. a public organization答案:B3. The most effective complaint can be made by ______.A. showing the faulty item to the manufacturerB. explaining exactly what is wrong with the itemC. saying firmly that the item is of poor qualityD. asking politely to change the item答案:B4. The phrase live up to (Para. 1, Line 2)in the context means ______.A. meet the standard ofB. realize the purpose ofC. fulfil the demands ofD. keep the promise of答案:A5. 成人英语三级考试阅读理解专题练习(3).doc
2018年成人英语三级考试阅读理解专题练习(3)Education is broadly divided into general and special education; our topic now is the difference and the relationship between the two. The term, general education, is somewhat vague and colorless; it does not mean some airy education in knowledge in general (if there be such knowledge), nor does it mean education for all in the sense of universal education. It is used to indicate that part of a student’s whole education which look first of all to his life as a responsible human being and citizen, while the term, special education, indicates that part which looks to the student’s competence in some occupation. These two sides of life are not entirely separable; and it would be false to imagine education for the one as quite distinct from education for the other. Clearly, general education has somewhat the meaning of liberal education. If one clings to the root meaning of liberal as that which benefits or helps to make free men, then general and liberal education have identical goals. It is most unfortunate if we envisage general education as something formless-that is to say. the taking of one course after another; and as something negative, namely, the study of what is not in a field of concentration. Just as we regard the courses in concentration as having definite relations to one another, so shouldwe envisage general education as an organic whole whose parts in expounding a ruling idea and in serving a common aim. It may be objected that we are proposing to limit the liberty of the student in the very name of liberal education. Such an objection would only indicate an ambiguity in the conception of liberal education. We must distinguish between liberalism in education and education in the liberalism. The former, based as it is on the doctrine of individualism, expresses the view that the student should be free in his choice of courses. But education in liberalism is an altogether different matter; it is education which has a pattern associated with the liberal outlook. In this view, there are truths which none can be free to ignore, if one is to have that wisdom through which life can become useful. These are the truths concerning the structure of the good life and concerning the factual conditions by which it may be achieved, truths comprising the goals of the free society.第16题.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Difference and relationship between general and special education.B.Difference and relationship between general and liberal education.C.Difference and relationship between liberalism in education and education in liberalism.D.All of the above.

For centuries Dutch engineers have been fighting a war against water. Their main ene-my is the sea. A large part of the country is below sea level. In fact,Holland is also called the “Netherlands” which means “low land.” Very tall a nd strong walls, called dykes, have built to keep out the sea. But in very rough weather the sea may suddenly burst through a dyke. Great damage can be caused by floods when this happens.
Three large rivers are also part of the problem.-They flow through Holland into the North Sea. They have cut many passages across the country. At low tides, the rivers flow into the sea as usual, But at high tide, the sea can flow into the rivers! This is because the land is so low.
The battles against the water never end, but they have made Holland a bigger and bigger country. In order to prevent floods, the engineers take, or reclaim, land that was under water. The Dutch have been reclaiming land for seven hundred years.
Land is usually reclaimed from a passage between islands. Two dykes are built across the passage, so they block the water between them. Then the engineers dig long canals and pump the water into them. At low tide, the canals empty the water into the sea.
Because the land is so low, water from the sea and rivers can rise up through the ground. For this reason, the pumps continue working. The dykes contain gates, and through these the water is pumped out. In many
parts of Holland, pumps must be working all the time. If they stopped, there will be very bad floods.
A piece of reclaimed land is called polder, and Holland has thousands of polders. Some are very large, but others are quite small. There are farms on many of the polders. Corn and other crops grow well on the drained land, and it gives good grass for cattle. Many small towns and villages stand on polders. Even′Amsterdam′s great airport was built on reclaimed land.
