Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, it is safer to be driven by a woman! There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man can not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green — a strange world indeed.Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called "cones". These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of "rods" but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape but no color. Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will, in a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around.( ) 41. Unit 1 ANNE’S BEST FRIENDDo you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feelings and thoughts? Or are you afraid that your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through? Anne Frank wanted the first kind, so she made her diary her best friend.Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War II. Her family was Jewish so they had to hide or they would be caught by the German Nazis. She and her family hid away for nearly twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friend was her diary. She said, “I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary as most people do, but I want this diary itself to be my friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty.”Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942.Thursday 15th June, 1942Dear Kitty,I wondered if it is because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I came here.…For example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by myself. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn’t dare to open a window. Another time five months ago, I happened to be upstairs at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I’d seen the night face to face……Sadly …I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtains hanging before very dusty windows. It’s no pleasure looking through these any longer because nature is one thing that really must be experienced.Yours,AnneUnit 2 English around the worldThe road to modern EnglishAt the end of the 16th century, about five to seven million people spoke English. Nearly all of them lived in England. Later in the next century, people from England made voyages to conquer other parts of the world and because of that, English began to be spoken in many other countries. Today, more people speak English as their first, second or foreign language than ever before.Native English speakers can understand each other even if they don’t speak the same kind of English. Look at this example:British Betty: Would you like to see my flat?American Amy: Yes. I’d like to come up to your apartment. So why has English changed over time? Actually, all languages change and develop when cultures meet and communicate with each other. At first, the English spoken in England between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was based more on German than the English we speak at present. Then gradually between about AD 800 and 1150, English became less like German because those who ruled England spoke first Danish and later French. These new settlers enriched the English language and especially its vocabulary. So by the 1600’s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620 some British settlers moved to America. Later in the 18th century some British people were taken to Australia too. English began to be spoken in both countries. Finally by the 19th century the language was settled. At that time two big changes in English spelling happened: first Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary and later Noah Webster wrote The America Dictionary of the English Language. The latter gave a separate identity to American English spelling.English now is also spoken as a foreign or second language in South Asia. For example, India has a very large number of fluent English speakers because Britain ruled India from 1765 to 1947. During that time English became the language for government and education. English is also spoken in Singapore and Malaysia and countries in Africa such as South Africa. Today the number of people learning English in China is increasing rapidly. In fact, China may have the largest number of English learners. Will Chinese English develop its own identity? Only time will tell.STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECTSWhat is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expected to speak excellent English. However, on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak. When people use words and expressions different from “standard language”, it is called a dialect. American English has many dialects, especially the midwestern, southern, African American and Spanish dialects. Even in some parts of the USA, two people from neighboring towns speak a little differently. American English has so many dialects because people have come from all over the world.Geography also plays a part in making dialects. Some people who live in the mountains of the eastern USA speak with an older kind of English dialect. When Americans moved from one place to another, they took their dialects with them. So people from the mountains in the southeastern USA speak with almost the same dialect as people in the northwestern USA. The USA is a large country in which many different dialects are spoken.Although many Americans move a lot, they still recognize and understand each other’s dialects.Unit 3 JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONGPART I THE DREAM AND THE PLANMy name is Wang Kun. Ever since middle school, my sister Wang Wei and I have dreamed about taking a great bike trip. Two years ago she bought an expensive mountain bike and then she persuaded me to buy one. Last year, she visited our cousins, Dao Wei and Y u Hang at their college in Kunming. They are Dai and grew up in western Yunnan Province near the Lancang River, the Chinese part of the river that is called the Mekong River in other countries. Wang Wei soon got them interested in cycling too. After graduating from college, we finally got the chance to take a bike trip. I asked my sister, “Where are we going?” It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends. Now she is planning our schedule for the trip.I am fond of my sister but she has one serious shortcoming. She can be really stubborn. Although she didn’t know the best way of getting to places, she insisted that she organize the trip properly. Now I know that the proper way is always her way. I kept asking her, “When are we leaving and when are we coming back?”I asked her whether she had looked at a map yet. Of course she hadn’t; my sister doesn’t care about details. So I told her that the source of the Mekong is in Qinghai Province. She gave me a determined look--the kind that said she would not change her mind. When I told her that our journey would begin at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres, she said itwould be an interesting experience. I know my sister well. Once she has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Finally, I had to give in.Several months before our trip, Wang Wei and I went to the library. We found a large atlas with good maps that showed details of world geography. From the atlas we could see that the Mekong River begins in a glacier on a mountain in Qinghai Province. At first the river is small and the water is clear and cold. Then it begins to move quickly. It becomes rapids as it passes through deep valleys, travelling across western Yunnan Province. Sometimes the river becomes a waterfall and enters wide valleys. We were both surprised to learn that half of the river is in China. After it leaves China and high altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea.PART II A NIGHT IN THE MOUNTAINSAlthough it was autumn, the snow was already beginning to fall in Tibet. Our legs were so heavy and cold that they felt like blocks of ice. Have you ever seen snowmen ride bicycles? That’s what we looked like! Along the way children dressed in long wool coats stopped to look at us. In the late afternoon we found it was so cold that our water bottles froze. However, the lakes shone like glass in the setting sun and looked wonderful. Wang Wei rode in front of me as usual. She is very reliable and I knew I didn’t need to encourage her. To climb the mountains was hard work but as we looked around us, we were surprised by the view. We seemed to be able to see for miles. At one point we were so high that we found ourselves cycling through clouds. Then we began going down the hills. It was great fun especially as it gradually became much warmer. In the valleys colourful butterflies flew around us and we saw many yaks and sheep eating green grass. At this point we had to change our caps, coats, gloves and trousers for T-shirts and shorts. In the early evening we always stop to make camp. We put up our tent and then we eat. After supper Wang Wei put her head down on her pillow and went to sleep but I stayed awake. At midnight the sky became clearer and the stars grew brighter. It was so quiet. There was almost no wind- only the flames of our fire for company. As I lay beneath the stars I thought about how far we had already travelled. We will reach Dali in Yunnan Province soon, where our cousins Dao Wei and Yu Hang will join us. We can hardly wait to see them!Unit 4 A NIGHT THE EARTH DIDN’T SLEEPStrange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in them. A smelly gas came out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am on July 28, 1976, some people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, were asleep as usual that night. At 3:42 am everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at an end! Eleven kilometres directly below the city one of the greatest earthquakes of the 20th century had begun. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than two hundred kilometres away. One-third of the nation felt it. A huge crack that was eight kilometres long and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay in ruins. The sufferings of the people was extreme. Two-thirds ofthem died or were injured during the earthquake. The number of people who were killed or seriously injured reached more than 400,000.But how could the survivors believe it was natural? Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. All of the city’s hospital, 75%of its factories and buildings and 90%of its homes were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridges also fell or were not safe for travelling. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of steel. Tens of thousands of cows would never give milk again. Half a million pigs and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were shocked. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake which was almost as strong as the first one shook Tangshan. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. All hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers. Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead. To the north of the city, most of the 10,000 miners were rescued from the coal mines there. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed. Fresh water was taken to the city by train, truck and plane. Slowly, the city began to breathe again.UNIT 5 ELIAS’ STORYMy name is Elias. I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful.I needed his help because I had very little education. I began school at six. The school where I studied for only two years was three kilometres away. I had to leave because my family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare. I could not read or write well. After trying hard, I got a job in a gold mine. However, this was a time when one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. Sadly I did not have one because I was not born there, and I worried about whether I would become out of work. The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. He told me how to get the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg. I became more hopeful about my future. I never forgot how kind Mandela was. When he organized the ANC Youth League, I joined it as soon as I could. He said:“The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.”It was the truth. Black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa. No one could grow food there. In fact as Nelson Mandela said:“…we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important, or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws. We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decided to answer violence with violence. ”As a matter of fact, I do not like violence…but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put in prison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream of making black and white people equal.THE REST OF ELIAS’ STORYYou cannot imagine how the name of Robben Island made us afraid. It was a prison from which no one escaped. There I spent the hardest time of my life. But when I got there Nelson Mandela was also there and he helped me. Mr Mandela began a school for those of us who had little learning. He taught us during the lunch breaks and the evenings when we should have been asleep. We read books under our blankets and used anything we could find to make candles to see the words. I became a good student. I wanted to study for my degree but I was not allowed to do that. Later, Mr Mandela allowed the prison guards to join us. He said they should not be stopped from studying for their degrees. They were not cleverer than me, but they did pass their exams. So I knew I could get a degree too. That made me feel good about myself. When I finished the four years in prison, I went to find a job. Since I was better educated, I got a job working in an office. However, the police found out and told my boss that I had been in prison for blowing up government buildings. So I lost my job. I did not work again for twenty years until Mr Mandela and the ANC came to power in 1994. All that time my wife and children had to beg for food and help from relatives or friends. Luckily Mr Mandela remembered me and gave me a job taking tourists around my old prison on Robben Island. I felt bad the first time I talked to a group. All the terror and fear of that time came back to me. I remembered the beatings and the cruelty of the guards and my friends who had died. I felt I would not be able to do it, but my family encouraged me. They said that the job and the pay from the new South Africa government were my reward after working all my life for equal rights for the Blacks. So now I am proud to show visitors over the prison, for I helped to make our people free in their own land.。

B1 Unit 1 Friendship编撰:王兴仁A best friend is someone who you can tell everything to, even your deepest feelings and thoughts. Anne Frank treated her diary as her best friend. The German Nazis were in search of Anne and her family. The family had to hide away from the chase. They didn’t dare to go out even in the evenings. They had to stay indoors day and night. Not being able to go out for such a long time, Anne missed the beauty of nature so much that she grew crazy about everything to do with it. She stayed up until eleven thirty one evening on purpose just to see the moonlight. She said: “This is the first time I have seen the moonlight since I was here.”Unfortunately, the family were discovered at last and taken away from the hiding place.- 1 -B1 Unit 2 English around the world编撰:李庆云At the end of the 16th century, English was only spoken by people from England. They were native speakers. Today, the largest number of people speaking English may be in China. A lot of Chinese people speak English as their foreign language. The English language has changed quite a lot over the last four centuries. Old English sounded more or less like German for it was based on German, but modern English sounds more like French than German because England was once ruled by the French. Two people had great effects on the English changes. One was Shakespeare, who enlarged the English vocabulary; the other was Noah Webster, who wrote a dictionary which gave American English its own identity.- 2 -B1 Unit 3 Travel journal编撰:依智Wang Kun and Wang Wei are brothers and sisters. They have dreamed of taking a great bike trip. It was Wang Wei who first had the idea to cycle along the Mekong River. When it enters Southeast Asia, it travels slowly through hills and low valleys and the plains where rice grows. Despite the difficulties, Wang Kun and Wang Wei were determined to begin their journey at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters in Qinghai Province. During their journey, they enjoyed the continuous change of the weather. Finally, they reached Dali in Yunnan Province, where Dao Wei and Yu Hang joined them. The four of them went on with their great bike trip.- 3 -B1 Unit 4 Earthquakes编撰:郭影Several days before July 28, 1976, many strange things happened in Tangshan. The water in the village wells rose and fell. The water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. They were signs for the earthquake. But people in the city didn’t think much of these. At 3:42 a. m. that day, the earth began to shake, which destroyed the city. Many people, including workers and doctors, came to rescue those trapped under the ruins. In 1716, the Amber Room was given to the Russian people as a gift of friendship by Frederick William I, who loved best soldiers more than the Amber Room than the Amber Room itself. In Russia, the room first served as a small reception hall for important visitors and later moved and redesigned by Catherine II. Unfortunately, the Amber Room disappeared when the Nazi Germany and Russia were at war and now nobody knows what happened to it. In the spring of 2003, however, a new Amber Room, built by the Russians and Germans on the basis of old photos, was ready for the people of St Petersburg to celebrate the 300th birthday of their city.- 6 -B2 Unit 2 The Olympic Games编撰:徐峰Pausanias and Lili are talking about the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics. Every year over 29,000 of them were killed, with only 72,000 left. In Zimbabwe, the elephant Daisy saw said they were endangered there. Farmers used to hunt them because they were considered to have destroyed the farms. Later, the government tried to help the farmers by asking the tour companies to bring more tourists to the area and setting the number of animals to be hunted, which brought the farmers a lot of incomes. As a result, farmers started to protect them. In the thick rain forest, - 10 -Daisy saw a monkey rubbing an insect over his body to protect against mosquitoes. With all her experience, Daisy had learned how to work with WWF to protect wildlife.记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 11 -B2 Unit 5 Music编撰:李庆云If we are honest with ourselves, most of us have dreamed of becoming famous. Most musicians form a band because of the same interest in writing and playing music. They may play anywhere to earn some extra money as well as fulfill their dreams. However, “The Monkees”, which started differently, began as a TV show with musicians playing jokes and music in the programme. Only after a year or so did they become more serious and they produced their own records and later became even more popular than “The Beatles”in the USA. The band once broke up and reunited. In memory of their time as a real band, they produced a new record in 1996.记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 12 -B3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world编撰:依智There are all kinds of festivals throughout the world, festivals to satisfy and please the ancestors, to honour some famous people or important events, and to express people’s gratitude to the God for bringing them a year of plenty. For example, Japanese observe Obon, when people go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. In India, October 2 is a national festival to honour Mahatma Gandhi who helped India become an independent country. And in China the Spring Festival, which is celebrated in January or February, is the most energetic and important because it is a festival that looks forward to the coming of spring. Why are all these festivals everywhere? Because during the festivals, people can get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other.- 13 -B3 Unit 2 Healthy eating编撰:郭影Wang Pengwei felt very frustrated when he saw none of his patrons(常客) would eat in his restaurant. In his opinion, nothing could be better than his fried rice, mutton kebabs, fatty pork or his sugary cola. Who won his customers? He followed one of his best friends into Yong Hui’s newly opened slimming restaurant and was amazed at the menu there: raw vegetables, fruit and water. It was obvious that Yong Hui was telling lies when promising to make the customers thinner. In order to win his customers back, he went to the library to do some research, which showed Yong Hui’s menu didn’t give the customers energy-giving food. Having found out the weakness of Yong Hui’s menu, Pengwei wrote his own sign, saying energy-giving food served. In fact, there was weakness in Wang - 14 -Pengwei’s menus, too. Food at his restaurant contains too much fat. So the only solution is to combine the two menus together to be a balanced menu. 记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 15 -Unit 3 The Million Pound Bank Note编撰:李红星Sailing home, Henry, a San Francisco businessman, found himself carried out to sea by a strong wind. When he had just about given himself up for lost, he was spotted by a ship and so he landed in London by accident. Hungry and alone, he walked the streets of the city when he was unexpectedly called into a mansion (宅邸), where two rich brothers, Oliver and Roderick, gave him a letter and told him not to open it till two o’clock of the day.Not knowing it was a million pound banknote, Henry left the mansion and went into a cheap restaurant to stuff his stomach. Everybody was rude to him because he was in rags and looked depressed. Then, to the surprise of everybody, he handed the owner a million-pound bank-note to pay for the meal. On - 16 -seeing the note, all the people in the restaurant became polite and tried their best to please Henry. Don’t you think it’s the most incredible table in the world?记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 17 -B3 Unit 4 Astronomy: the scienceof the stars编撰:徐峰At the very beginning, the earth was just a cloud of energetic dust. Then the dust combined into a ball moving around the sun. After that, it exploded loudly with fire and rock, producing water vapour, carbon, dioxide and other gases, which in the end made the earth’s atmosphere. Then the earth cooled down, and water, one of the earth’s special qualities, appeared and stayed on the earth, which made it possible for life to begin to develop. Some small plants growing in the water appeared on the earth’s surface, followed by land animals, including insects, amphibians, reptiles and the most important animals called dinosaurs until finally dinosaurs disappeared all of a sudden and some small clever animals with hands and feet appeared and spread all over - 18 -the earth and in place of dinosaurs they became the most important animals on the plane t—that is, human beings.记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 19 -Unit 5 Canad a—“The True North”编撰:韩莉My cousin and I traveled across Canada by train from west to east. We saw many things from the train on the way across, and in the cities of Toronto and Montreal. We passed through the Rocky Mountains on the train, and saw wild scenery, a grizzly bear and some mountain goats. Canada is very empty in the centre, which is a wheat growing area. The city of Thunder bay is a port in the centre of Canada. Ocean ships can come all the way to the top of the Great lakes. In Toronto, we went up the CN Tower and saw the mist from Niagara Falls. We visited the covered stadium, which is the home of the famous basketball team. We saw Chinatown and had dinner at the Pink Pearl restaurant. When we arrived in Montreal the - 20 -next day, we saw many signs and ads in French. Then we went to Old Montreal, sitting in a typical cafébeside the St Lawrence River. We spent the afternoon in shops and visiting the artists in their workplaces. 记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 21 -B4 Unit 1 Women of achievement编撰:韩素宏There are a lot of famous women of achievement in the world. They all do well in their work, such as Lin Qiaozhi, Jane Goodall and Song Qingling. Of all the famous women, I admire Madame Curie for her contribution to the world. I also admire Florence Nightingale for her great achievement as a nurse. There is no doubt that they are real heroines and worthy of being praised. But in my opinion, all healthy humans have the ability to do that. It just depends on whether you have the determination to do it and whether the situation is in your favor. But never before have I admired a person so much as Helen Keller, who I just read about. She was an unlucky girl, who could neither hear nor see. I just can’t imagine how she could be so successful. I really don’t believe that a deaf-blind lady - 22 -could become a world-famous writer. What great difficulties she must have met and what great efforts she must have made. If I were her, I wouldn’t have the courage to live on. It is by her courage and imagination and intelligence that I was struck.记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 23 -B4 Unit 2 Working the land编撰:王兴仁Dr Yuan Long ping was a pioneer of agriculture in China. He graduated from Southwest Agriculture in 1953. Since then he devoted his life to finding ways to grow more rice. The rice farmers are now producing harvest twice as large as before by using his kind of rice. But he was not satisfied with his work. Although now he leads a rich life, he still insists on his work to develop his rice. I think his work is really important to the world. Because of his hard work, the production of food has been improved. And the problem of hunger can be solved. Thanks to Y uan Long ping’s great work, millions of people can benefit from his extraordinary work.记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 24 -B4 Unit 3 A taste of English humour编撰:李庆云Some humor can be cruel, but some people seem to enjoy seeing other people’s bad luck at times. Perhaps it makes us feel more content with our life because we feel there is someone else worse off than ourselves. However, some actors can astonish us with the deep feelings they can inspire in us for a character. Charlie Chaplin, the most famous actor during the period of silent films, was such an actor. He was able to make terrible situations funny and at the same time show the humanity and kindness that can be found in the most difficult circumstances. Take The Gold Rush for example. The film is set in California in the middle of the nineteenth century. Chaplin and his friend wash sand from the river in a pan of water and expect to find gold but they have not been fortunate - 25 -enough to find any. Instead, they are caught in a snowstorm in a small wooden house, where they have nothing to eat. They are so hungry that they have to boil a pair of leather shoes and eat it. Chaplin seems to eat every mouthful with great enjoyment and makes it seem as if it were one of the best meals he has ever had!记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 26 -B4 Unit 4 Body language编撰:依智Not all cultures greet each other the same way. Each country may have its own way to express feelings. In Britain, people may keep a certain distance. In Japan, they may bow to each other when they meet. In France, people shake hands and kiss each other twice on each cheek. And in South American countries, they may stand close and touch each other. But in Middle East Muslim countries, they shake hands only with men, not with women. In China today, people may shake hands with each other, sometimes they greet each other only with a smile. Perhaps they will kiss or embrace in the future to express their strong feelings.记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 27 -B4 Unit 5 Theme parks编撰:韩素宏Parks provide people with a place to amuse themselves for a while. In recent decades, however, many parks have been designed to provide entertainment. We call them theme parks. The new parks are usually huge places and have a variety of things to see and do. Theme parks have a certain idea—a certain theme—that the whole parks are based on. For example, a sport theme park will offer visitors sports to play or watch; a history or culture theme park will let us see how our ancestors dressed, worked or lived. The oldest theme park in the world is Disneyland. It seemed like a place of fantasy. Besides these, we have the marine or ocean parks, which attract a lot of visitors.记事:___________________________________ - 28 -B5 Unit 1 Great scientists编撰:郭影John Snow, a well-known doctor in London, became inspired when he thought about helping ordinary people who were exposed to cholera, a deadly disease of its day. Many thousands of people died every time there was an outbreak because no one knew the cause of it. John wanted to help solve the problem. He got interested in two theories explaining how cholera killed people. He believed in the second theory that suggested that people absorbed the disease with their meals. In 1854, when another outbreak hit London, he was ready to test the two theories. With the help of the map he made, he got a valuable clue about the cause of the disease and was able to announce that the water was to blame.- 29 -B5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom编撰:韩莉If you study British history, you may find the country went through several different names. The first name England referred to England and Wales, but when the two countries joined Scotland in 1603, the name Great Britain was given to represent the country. With the joining of Northern Ireland, the country got the name the United Kingdom, which was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack.Of the four countries, England is the largest and is divided into three zones: the South, the North and the Midlands. Its capital London, which has been influenced by some invaders, like the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans, is the greatest historical treasure of all with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings.- 30 -B5 Unit 3 Life in the future编撰:徐峰Li Qiang couldn’t believe that he had traveled to the year AD 3005 in a time capsule.Because this was his first time trip, he was worried and unsettled so that he suffered from “time lag.”Besides, he was hit by the lack of fresh air. His guide, Wang Ping, who was very understanding, gave him some green tablets and a mask, which helped him overcome the problems. However, Li Qiang experienced something new. He flew above the ground in a hovering carriage. Arriving home, he was shown into a large bright, clean room with a wall of trees. After eating something, he fell fast asleep in the bed that was produced from the floor.记事:___________________________________ - 31 -B5 Unit 4 Making the news编撰:李红星It is Zhou Yang’s first day at the office of China Daily. He is excited and eager to go out on a story on his own, but he can’t because he isn’t experienced enough. His new boss, Hu Xin, is sharing with him how to be a good reporter. To be a good reporter, one needs to be curious, which enables one to ask many different questions and acquire all the information he needs to know. Besides, it’s important for a reporter to have a nose for a story, knowing if someone is telling the truth. And while interviewing people, a reporter has to listen to the answers carefully because he has to listen to the detailed facts and prepare the next question depending on what people say. If possible, a reporter can record the interview in case he might be accused of printing lies.- 32 -B5 Unit 5 First aid编撰:王兴仁First aid is the kind of help given to someone who falls ill or gets injured before a doctor can be found. Of course, the illness or injury is not serious. Now let’s talk about FIRST AID for burns. Y ou have three layers of skin that protect yourself against diseases, poisons and the harmful rays from the sun. Your skin also gives you your sense of touch. First aid is a very important step in the treatment. People can get burned by many things, such as hot liquids, steam, fire, radiation, the sun, electricity, etc. There are three types of burns. Burns are called first degree, second degree or third degree burns, depending on which layers are burned. Different degree burn can be treated in a different way. Let’s keep these things in mind.- 33 -词汇小故事(1~3册)BI Unit 1Topic: FriendshipA letter to news agencyWe recently had a survey about the parents’ opinions to adolescents’ idols. Some are well concerned about it that the ir children can’t get along well with others for they are spellbound by their idols, they are so crazy for them that they try to imitate anything their idols do! For this reason, they raise a lot of problems home and at school. The parents think the idols have hidden away something on purpose that isn’t good and make glosses of well-off situations that the students could not judge! They hold the idea that the idols cheat their fans and have a bad effect on their children! On the contrary, some parents are not upset about it and think it is a nature that children should have their heroes. Good examples from the idols - 34 -can add experience to students, which makes it known that success comes with hard work. The trust and the concern that students keep to idols will do good to them.We know every coin has two sides. As long as parents and the whole society guide adolescents properly, letting them go through something happy or sad and something hard or easy and sharing love and pain, the adolescents can develop healthily. And that is the really meaningful point!记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 35 -BI Unit 2Topic: English around the worldAn epitome of American culture The United States of America is an immigrant county with all kind of races from all over the world, such as Africans, Asians, Europeans and South Americans, with the Indians its natives. Because of it,the USA is a country with colorful but special culture, in which English is a good example. The British had ruled America for over 300 years so the English play an important role in USA and becomes its only official language. If someone asks who do say only one language, the answer must be Americans. But the language differs from area to area in USA, for most of Americans have strong accent but less dialect. You can recognize Americans and know he is southeastern(one speaks a bit slow but clearly) or northeastern (one speaks quickly) by their accents. You - 36 -also can tell them from Englishmen by the words and phrases which they use. Take the followings as an example, if you hear an English-speaking person says “would you like to my flat for diner tonight?”, but not says: “would you like to my department…?” he may be an English but not American. In the modern time the USA play a most important part in the international affairs and many people regard American English as the standard English. Believe it or no t, many people retell what the Americans say and try to learn a mouthful of American accent! American English is an epitome of American culture which shows The USA is tolerant, easy-going, but commanding!记事:___________________________________ ___________________________________ - 37 -BI Unit 3Topic: travel journalJourney home and abroadHaving a journey home or abroad is a general topic for us, going everywhere, enjoying all kinds of attractions and taking everything into your eyes and minds will improve your attitude to the whole world! to meet the local people, get familiar with their custom, enjoy their foods and can have a feast of exotic events.
